      I am far from a doctor but...when I get acid reflux that comes up my throat into my mouth, it seems really acidic. So I came up with the idea of 'nutralising' the acid using alkaline. So what I do is get a heaped teaspoon of bi-carb soda mix it in a little water and drink it. Instantly I get relief, you end up doing a few BIG burps but it seems to neutralize the acid and it basically goes away. I know bicarbonate soda is no fancy drug, but nothing I've ever got from the chemist (over the counter) had ever made any difference. The bi-carb works amazingly, giving instant relief. I wonder what Dr. Moran thinks of my backyard treatment? PS thanks for your videos, they have provided a lot of good advice in regards to Covid and the facts surrounding it. Colin

    When I suffer from reflux which can be often, I take apple cider vinegar , water and baking soda. Works all the time. 2 ounces ACV, 3 or 4 ounces of water to dilute the vinegar (because it doesn't taste very good ) and then stir in (tall glass) one level t-spoon of baking soda. Stir quickly and drink while if fizzles. Tastes ok and works and is absolutely not expensive. Try it.

    I have Barrett’s esophagus, took Omeperazol for YEARS and then began feeling extremely fatigued and quite ill. None of my Drs. could figure it out. I happened to have an appointment scheduled with my Gastro Dr. and told him about it. He ran several blood tests and one came back extremely high. It was Chromogranin A. Normal range is 0-95. Mine clocked in at 2,921. I had to have scans done to see if I had a neuroendocrine tumor. That came back negative. I was immediately taken off the PPI as that was the cause. I now take cimetidine. It doesn’t work as well BUT I feel immensely better physically than I did while on the PPI.

    Disappointing that the doctor didn't go deep enough into diet and lifestyle changes. Far too many of us are eating far too much processed food and grains which are a contributor to heartburn. I was raised on breakfast cereal and had chronic heartburn my entire life until I switched over to eating eggs and protein for breakfast which took care of my heartburn, which was the specific recommendation by a naturopath. I also cleaned up the rest of my diet and reduced my stress levels.

I will try changing my diet. I do have an appointment, though to do the test, where they view my esophagus and stomach. I do know I have an hernia in my esophagus, as that was seen, in other X-rays and mri I had in the past of other problem body parts.

    This is really great information! I started PPI about a year ago and just found out I have osteopenia in a hip! I stopped the PPI 6 days ago as soon as I found a correlation between PPI and bone loss... but got heartburn this morning following a breakfast of coffee, two brown eggs scrambled with green & yellow squash, onion, bay leaf and turmeric. I did not know I could take 1/2 of the PPI pill. I will try to do without the PPI but I certainly will not take any of the osteopenia medication... they sound far too risky. I am trying bone building alternatives like exercise and weight lifting and not eating grains. I am having other arthritis pain in knees also. By the way, I started being so much more forgetful when I started the PPI to the point where I spoke to my doctor about it so I know this all happened about the same time. I think side effects of PPIs should be studied more with respect the to relationship of bone loss and memory problems.

    I’m always amazed at how different allopathic medicine approaches a health problem. It’s always “it just happens!” It’s a “disorder.” Never look into what causes it. Just accept it because it happens to many people. And here’s a drug to make you feel better. When it gets worse and you build tolerance to the drug, we’ll do surgery.

    There should be warning signs around PPIs being used. What isn't being said is that when PPIs are used, it is assumed that the proton pumps are overfiring but as the cause is unknown this isn't really a treatment. The doctor does not know why the proton pumps would overfire and thus prescribing medicine that inhibits them is not a way of actually addressing what the issue is. It is a way to make the patient feel as though they are being treated. My advice is stay away from the synthetics and get a good look at lifestyle as well as biology. Then consult your specialists.

    • @MedicinewithDrMoran
      @MedicinewithDrMoran  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your comment Maciej, I agree with you that the most important thing here is to look at the lifestyle modifications. It is much more preferable not to prescribe these medications. In cases of acid reflux, the main pathology is regurgitation of acid from the stomach back up into the esophagus. The gastric acid induces typically a burning pain when it comes up into the esophageal lining. There is not acid overproduction from the proton pumps in the stomach. The reason why the medication works is there is less acid in the stomach and so the pH of the gastric contents is much higher and so people do not feel any symptoms when the more alkaline gastric contents reflux back up into the esophagus.

      @@MedicinewithDrMoran In cases where all known PPIs have failed or the patient has not responded well to them, and an endoscopy has shown that there is no hiatus hernia, yet symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, reflux and burning persist regularly what would be the next step? Assume the patient has had a CT scan or ultrasound and structurally there are not abnormalities in any of the organs (just non-erosive duodentitis) and they have a very healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise, good diet and sleep, how would you investigate a functional issue? Raise the back of your bed post so you sleep at a decline. This prevents acid from coming up while you sleep. Adjust diet & don't eat before bed. This will resolve it for many especially if the reflux is only temporary from a tear in the throat muscle. It needs to heal first. Medications for this can cause you to have more issues. Treat naturally first.

    Dr Moran, consider temporary megadosing of B1 thiamine benfotiamine or tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide along with a good magnesium, such as nano mag, for possible dysautonomia before prescribing PPI's. Weak hydrochloric acid is what causes acid reflux. So PPI or antacid will just worsen the condition not help it. PPI will eventually cause malnutrition and SIBO long term. Nutritional deficiencies are the root causes for almost all chonic diseases of civilization

    Great video. I have laryngopharyngeal reflux which caused me to lose my voice. Welcome any additional insight as to why my condition is effecting my larynx (with no chest pain, just lump in my throat at times). Thank you for your help, trying some of these suggestions before moving to medicating.

      You could be just numb now to the burning feeling. Have you had an endoscopy? If not, I would schedule one.

      I experienced heart palpitations after taking that medication for a couple of months. I discovered that it was due to low magnesium, as PPIs cause lower absorption of magnesium. I started taking a magnesium supplement opposite from when I would normally take the PPI and within a few days, the heart palpitations stopped.

    My heartburn is always preceded by a small burp. If I could just release the gas out the other end, life might be wonderful. More flatulence and fewer would be helpful. I cut dairy products for years and still suffered. Does anyone have any suggestions?

      I’ve suffered from heartburn for years and years. Taken every prescription med under the sun and after a few years I “graduate” to something stronger. 8 months ago someone told me about apple cider vinegar pills. I started them and they work great for me. I sometimes have to take a couple pills but 99.99% of the time my heartburn goes away. I now take it as a maintenance thing and then as needed if i eat something that kicks it off. Try it. Works great for me. Btw, I don’t take ppi med any longer.😊
