    I feel like, when I was a kid, there was a mall in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area that had four arcade cabinets in the middle of their hallways, of all places to put them---the four cabinets were back-to-back, and IIRC they had pretty gray sides. One was Arkanoid and one was Mr. Do; I can't remember the other two, but I'm pretty sure neither one was Pacman---I'd have remembered Pacman!

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  3 роки тому +1

      My friend Matt said that when Space Invaders came out they had it sitting out in the middle of the mall too, and I remember the local mall here a few years back when the Barber Cut or whatever those are called machines came out, and the Stacker machines they had some right out in the middle of the mall too that you walked around.... I remember seeing some of those little roller coaster rides in the mall too, it was a seat you sat on and watched the screen, and the seat moved around like you were riding through the roller coaster....

    Interesting insight. I always knew Taito switched to conversion kit-only games sometime in the mid-80s, but I didn't know they really stuck to just that for the most part. Another example of a kit-only game from them is Bubble Bobble, ironically.

    I remember first playing Arkanoid at Wonderland in Gresham Oregon. Such a simple game that is mysteriously complex at the same time. It is a quarter guzzler and a very difficult game. I have a beautiful Arkanoid in my collection and love playing it. Being able to continue the game enables you to see the more advanced levels. The music that plays when you are entering your high score is some of the absolute coolest ever. Totally Love it!

    There's one of these at Electric Avenue Arcade in Manchester, NH; I introduced my daughter to it.
    It's one of those games that maps poorly onto modern game console emulators because the controller just isn't right. Those multi-emulator cocktail cabinets let you play it with a trackball--that actually works all right!

    And the video maker found out how addictive Arkanoid can be, so much for those initial 4 credits haha. I've only run into this machine twice in my near 45 years of existence, a few years back in an arcade in Panama City Beach, and one locally in my town in an old pool hall for teens. That pool hall got closed after a near shooting there, so the owner moved his air conditioning business into the old place and built upon it, supposedly the machines that were there (stuff like Xevious, Elevator Action, Quartet, Millipede, and a few other machines) are actually still there, Arkanoid cabinet included.
    I've got it on NES, the Famicom sequel Revenge of DOH (decent arcade port), and the PS1 port of the Japan only Arkanoid Returns, as well as DOH It Again on SNES. Yes, I love Arkanoid.

    Solidly in my top 5 of all time. Like most spinner games, enjoying it is heavily based on how well the spinner works. There are a couple of machines in the arcades near me, all three with slightly rough and imprecise spinners. Not bad enough to keep me from playing them though. :)
    Tournament Arkanoid is really more of a mission pack sorta thing, as it's just different layouts but no gameplay changes. There's a true sequel called Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh that has some additional powerups, enemies, bricks, etc. I've never seen one of those in person, only played it in emulation.
    I'm fighting to keep from looking at the site to see if this is still available. I have an emulator machine with a spinner that I play it on at home, but I'd really like to have originals of all my faves.

    I'm not sure if it's this Arkanoid or sequel to it, but I believe this game has the typical Taito tactic of the 80s to around mid 90s of disabling continues when you get late into the game. Super frustrating as it disables continues on the final boss where it's very easy to die and very difficult to even make it that far! Still love the Arkanoid series, there was a cool remake on Xbox Live Arcade years ago.

    There are some levels where it is very helpful to have 3 balls going. The big downside is it won't drop any new capsules until you are back down to one ball on the screen.

  • @Maxxarcade

    I'd love to build one of these again, but it's getting really hard to find a working spinner assembly these days. Most of the aftermarket ones I've come across don't have the right gear ratio. And with a game like this, the feel of the spinner will make or break the whole experience.

  • @orangie8426
    @orangie8426 Рік тому

    Always follow the ball!!!!!
    I mean move the pad in motion to the movement of the ball..
    Forget about the capsules..
    The ball is the most important thing..
    If you hit the ball high and there is time and there is a capsule literally right next to you and it's one you want only then go for it..
    When shooting..
    Still..
    ALWAYS FOLLOW THE BALL!!!!!
    shoot....
    but don't try to shoot where ever you want to..
    Shoot but follow the ball..
    The split ball is good for levels where the ball is inside of non breakable cubes..
    Not so much about trying to paddle them..
    I used to be REALLY good at this game..
    But the secret is follow the ball with the paddle..

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 роки тому +1

      I've never really had that happen, is it a joystick or a spinner like this one? There's a sensor that the spinner 'spins' through underneath, if one of the optics gets locked off it might reverse the direction.... you could try cleaning it with some windex or something (while turned off) to make sure the LED's in there can receive the signal.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 роки тому +1

      It's got a gear on the bottom of it, that turns a couple other gears which connects to a little wheel that rotates through an optical emitter /receiver, the little wheel has holes cut in it, so the optic can tell how fast the wheel is spinning through. I'm not sure who makes the spinners like that, though, but maybe they've come up with some sort of aftermarket kind????
