I love the corries but I always see in the comments people wanting independence and that’s all fine and well but what you need to understand is that Jacobites weren’t fighting for freedom they were fighting for the Stuart’s to come back. Not for an independent Scotland

Charles was the son of James 2nd of England, James was Scot, a member of the Stuart clan, but a lot of his heritage was French -his mother was pure French - his father was half French - Remember the Charles 1st who had his head cut off by Cromwell? Prince Charlies was raised French, the boy was French through and through, I have read that he did not look anyhting like his official portrait- you know how court portrait painters were (are?)
His mother was mainly Polish, with minor French and German heritage as well. Far from purely French, for sure. But, with that said, Bonnie Prince Charles was unmistakably Scottish. His mother tongue was always English, and if you will read his letters, his dismay at a non-Briton ascending to the throne in England is made quite evident.

It's complicated. In 1603 King James VI of Scotland of the House of Stuart became King James I of England, meaning the Kings of Scotland became Kings of England. Due to various reasons, in 1689 the Grandson of James VI, James VII and II was deposed for William(a Dutchman) and Mary. This divided the British Isles somewhat. Scotland then joined with England to become the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. In 1714, a German family, the House of Hanover became the Kings of Great Britain, but there was still support for James and his family, who viewed the Union of England and Scotland as illigitimate and something they would overturn. This is in addition to religious reasons, as the Catholic and Episcopalians in the Scottish Highlands were more likely to support James and his son Charles(an Italian) who viewed themselves as the rightful Kings of Britain. So it was political, religious and historic(being a Scottish family) with a dash of nationalism thrown in. One thing is clear though. No side was white in all this. It was all about a German who was King and an Italian who wanted to be.

How was prince charles an Italian? Because he lived there? being born in Italy doesn't make you Italian. especially not in that day and age
