Hey Sparkie! I was in Sherbrooke for the first time a couple years ago & I thought it was magical. Driving down from Montreal past forests full of big trees and every one was a totally different tree. Amazed me. Mind you, Edinborough must be beautiful too. Like the man said, wherever you go, there you are.
A very funny comment -- thanks!

I like the Cories a lot, but they have gentle sweetness that doesn't quite convey the anger of a guy who's lost both legs and six years of his life to a stupid misadventure. Stan's version is not as pretty, but a lot stronger.

I can't believe the people taking offense to the lyric change for national reasons! Let me point a few things out! Sherbrooke and Halifax are both located in the province of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is latin for New Scotland. In the late 1700's, Nova Scotia was heavily settled by Scots and to this day, is the largest single ethnic heritage most people identify as! In the 1800's more people spoke Gaelic then English! Gaelic is still spoken there to this day, and is even the first language for many! It's no stretch of reality that a man on a Halifax pier in 1784 was homesick for Scotland! That said, I don't believe most people are upset about substituting a Scottish location into the song, they're upset because there are just too many damn syllables in Edinburgh! I know better, but it sounds like a mockery is being made of the song. Put Glasgow in there instead and I bet 99% of the bitching would have never happened!

It is often common in folk songs played live to substitute different words that customize the song to the people playing it, to the location be played, etc. It can really add fun and make the audience feel like they are included in the performance. Talk to any folk musician or any musician and I think they would understand.

@@JohnSmith-oe5kx for the sake of keeping the conversation going, sure adding a three syllable word might change the meter a little, but in this case, there is lots of time within the musical phrase for it. It does not seem rushed at all. Sometimes when writing a song, I write something down and want to cram it all in to one place because I write one line and fit it all in phrase.
But Edinburgh changes the context of where the man stands, no pun intended, at the end of the song. He is close to home, having made Halifax, but not quite to Sherbrooke. Why? Having had six years to get to Halifax, why did it take so long and why did he not make it home?

This vid was part of a series for the BBC (that has been reissued as part of the double DVD "A Vision of the Corries"). All of the songs on i5 seem to be a notch gentler (Mellow Corries?) so this may be why it is not as rousing as some of their earlier numbers. Still, it produced their best-ever version of Loch Lomond, a song that was meant to be sung that way.

My opinion, the Stan Rogers version is superior in that he properly conveys the anger I believe is being expressed in the lyrics of the song. That being said, this is by no means a poor performance. I would expect no less from 2 excellent musicians as the Corries. One could interpret their softer version as a more sorrowful lament as opposed to an angry one.

The number of comments about this tune is a tribute to Stan Rogers' song. In my opinion the Corries are one of the best folk groups ever. This is not one of their best covers however ... but they're such great musicians that it virtually impossible for them to do something poorly. However this particular version using Edinburgh instead of Sherbrook is an insult to the Scottish people. Surely the Corries didn't think that the Scotts would be offended by a song about Canada. What did they think? Should the folk of North American sing Scottish songs and sub into them our own place names?

Seems kind of silly singing Edinburgh instead of Sherbrook, though I don't know why it would be an insult to the Scottish people. I heard that the Corries defended changing the name by saying a lot of Barrett's men were Scottish and that's what they would have felt. To the American folk song Shenandoah they added a reference to Caledonia - far away from West Virginia - or it could have been taken from another version Roy picked up somewhere. I never heard those lyrics in an American version, but they sound nice just the same. With folk songs you can never be sure - in contrast to a song whose author is known. There is no video of their Shenandoah, or at least I haven't found one. I've been wanting to make my own but still waiting for a friend to send me photos from her Shenandoah holiday.

"Barrett's men"? It's a made-up story. But: Halifax, 1778? I believe the population was more English than anything else. As for Sherbrooke - as far as I can tell, it didn't exist under that name in 1778. So - you can put whoever you want on the Antelope ... !

Doing your own version of a song you relate to or feel something for is a folk tradition.
Dumb encompasses people with your attitude, when's the last time you made something ?
