Jolin became my fav Taiwanese artist last year when I started to learn mandarin and needed some good music to help me in this process. She's unique, I've never seemed someone portraiting critics to not just society in general, but especially Asian society like she does. She's also a great LGBTQIAP+ supporter, which makes me feel validated as a bi person, you need to check out her song and mv 'Womxnly' (玫瑰少年). Thanks for the reaction, I love you all so much!

Here's a breakdown of the music video (hang on, it's gonna be long):
Basically the music video was a reflection of her own journey and past experiences. How she spent years fighting off criticism AND her inner demons. Jolin has been in the industry since the late 90's, right off the bat (her debut), people were calling her ugly, making fun of her chubby cheeks. Jolin's appearance has always been a topic of discussion and has always been her weak spot. When she later skyrocketed into stardom and eventually grew out of her baby fat, paparazzis then shifted their focus and were calling her out for her stomach fat (at the start of the video, in the court scene, the prosecutor was showing a pic of her stomach fat as a piece of "evidence" for her "crime"). The court room scenes symbolizes her being "judged" and how a person is treated like a criminal when they are not fitting to societal beauty standards.
The restaurant scene where she is forced to eat plain and bland veggies was actually a real diet plan she went through in the past (from being called "fat" all the time). She'd had to eat veggies dipped and "washed" in a bowl of water (to get rid of any grease or sauce), and was only feeding on apples and greens everyday (unbalanced diet). She has once worn that white and pink dress at 4:42 to a red carpet event before and was mocked by the public for her poor fashion taste, saying how she looked like she was in a squid/cuttlefish costume. Notice how she's actually half squid in that scene, making fun of it. Then there's the plastic surgeon who's criticizing her face and trying to mold her into "perfection" by making her into a statue. And the circus scene where she's a puppet on strings. That's to symbolize how she was constantly being controlled by the media, the public and the people around her. She had no say in her own body or appearance.
The entire video is making references to all the criticism she has received throughout her career, and how those negative comments created her inner demons. She confined to her inner demons at first but eventually learned how to fight them off and get rid of them (the scenes where they all explode into glitter). And notice how the judge, the surgeon, the waitress etc was all played by herself. It's to symbolize that the person who judged Jolin the most was in fact herself. She was her biggest demon, she was her biggest critic, she was her biggest judge. All of it was just in her head. And she's come to realization that it's unnecessary. And she's saying "fuck it" to the criticism and how she's "ugly" (maybe in the eyes of others) but actually beautiful in her own eyes. She has now grown into a confident woman, no longer letting her self esteem be affected by others. And no longer letting herself be her biggest enemy and critic.
Message of the song: Fuck what other people think, Imma be myself, love myself, and I AM beautiful.

Jolin Tsai has been in music industry for 20 years, her latest album Ugly Beauty has nominated for a lot of awards and the album won album of the year, in 2019 she became the second female artist with the most best selling singles in Taiwan and as of February 2020 she became the first and only female artist in Taiwan with the most best selling singles and albums, on Spotify she became the first Taiwanese singer with the most streamed of all time, btw during pre-order of Ugly Beauty limited edition album it went outsold within a minute only! I've been a fan of Jolin since 2007 actually, glad yall reacted to her! She has a ton of interesting MVs especially off of her most recent album, I think notably Wxmanly and Lady in Red; and most of her more recent MVs are subbed on her official channel. She's also been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, if you want to check out an older MV I'd recommend Fantasy. ♥
The clip is showing her past of her career (like the circus scene) and self criticism. For example like fasting, plastic surgery, over pressure on perfection that keep yourself working too much. At the same time, it is hard to judge beauty/ugly which the first scene starting from a court (judge and defendant are her)

To what Zak said, yes even if you thought someone gets something easily the truth may not be. Joplin used to get A LOT OF criticism before she became famous. About her looks, about her shape, even about her outfits and her background. It is really mean, and glad she made through it. In the video there is a lot of scenes that associated with her experiences.

Play is definitely a very interesting music video to watch as it explores and criticizes various social phenomenon that have become abnormal in our societies
As for Womxnly and We are all different yet the same, these two songs surround the LGBTQ+ theme and indeed she's one of the pioneers in the Asian music industry to create music in such topic (that's why these two songs are considered as the "LGBTQ+ anthem" in Taiwan. ) There is a documentary produced by Jolin and her team back in 2014 for her concert, the documentary is also called "We are all different yet the same". this documentary talks about the story of Yeh Yung-chih who was bullied for his perceived effeminate behavior and was found dead in school’s washroom at the age of 15.
and the song "womanly" is inspired by this incident.

About the body image messages and stuff in this video and that you all talked about, this song and video actually directly reference a lot of the things she went through during her 20+ year long career, and her being able to overcome it and accept herself as a beautiful person, flaws and all. A lot of her lyrics, especially off the Ugly Beauty album, have incredibly powerful messages.
The courtroom where she's both the judge and the "criminal", being her own worst critic, with everyone else presenting "evidence" that she's not skinny or perfect enough. The restaurant scene is her struggle with being put on incredibly strict and unsatisfying/unflavorful diets to fit or become that ideal look. The bit about plastic surgery bit is pretty self-explanatory, I think.
But the "Jolin Freak Show" bit is esp hard-hitting for Jolin, because Jolin debuted as a singer in 1999, but didn't start incorporating dance or choreography into her performances until about 2006. She wasn't experienced in dance at that point (though she's an absolutely *incredible* dancer now, and even back then she was no slouch, she put a ton of hard work into it), but netizens would ridicule her dancing, and purposefully screen-capture and make gifs of her in ridiculous or unflattering poses and make fun of her.
That being said, I highly recommend checking out her other work! Pretty much anything of hers is worth looking into, but a good place to start would probably the rest of her MVs from her Ugly Beauty album. Womxnly is a powerful song that you definitely want to have the English captions turned on for; Lady In Red is intense and also is one that you want the English subs for because of the narrative.

She made MV's for most of the songs. I highly advise you to watch ''Lady in red'' (it's like a thriller movie but in 3 minutes, it's spooky), ''Hubby'' (MV celebrates the Hong Kong drama movies during 80's-90's - the golden age - it's very funny) as well as ''Romance'' (heart breaking MV of the romance that it just wasn't meant to be - it's heart breaking). Oh, and if you're into dancing ''Womxnly'' is a video for you (the song celebrates love, identity and LGBTQ+ people - the song was inspired by and written for a boy who was abused and murdered for being gay, there is also a documentary about it.)
