Hey Guys, so a lot of you have been asking us to check out Jolin Tsai, who we recently found out is known as the Queen of Cpop. We've heard of her before, but we've actually never heard her music so we took today to check it out. She just came out with a new album called Ugly Beauty 怪美的 which is also the name of this song.
It was really interesting because listening to her Ugly Beauty Song and doing our jolin tsai ugly beauty mv reaction made us dive into a topic of conversation that we didn't expect to (we thought it'd be a fun and jokes cpop reaction hahaha) I guess that's what you can expect from Jolin Tsai who's known for pushing the boundaries. She also performed at MAMA! We definitely really enjoyed her UGLY BEAUTY MV!
Incidentally, we checked out some stuff on her online afterwards and here's a snippet you might find interesting:
Jolin Tsai is generally considered the Queen of Chinese Pop for a variety of reasons: she’s been going strong since ’99 (just like a certain other Living Legend, and a certain other First Love - legends only), releasing critically acclaimed albums, garnering international attention, topping the charts and - perhaps most relevant to me and my readership of 12 gays - speaking out as an ally to the LGBTQ community for years. Gay icon? Oh, very much so.
Also, apparently this video with its strong message was also meant to silence her critics and empower:
Jolin demonstrates all of the ugliness and hypocrisy of society’s Impossible Standards of Beauty in the (ironically gorgeous) visual, opting for the right amount of campy hilarity - vomiting up likes and reaction emojis! The court’s slogan (“In Beauty We Trust”)! - and glossy pop fierceness while tackling critics of her weight in paparazzi photos, her diet, her proportions and everything in between.
“I used to be called fat, seafood sauce, squid, my facial features were called strange…when I was walking down the street during that time, when people looked at me, I would think that everyone hated me. At that time, although I seemed to be fine on the surface, in fact, my heart was already very unhappy. The cover of the album actually intends to tell everyone that I have overcome this, so you can too, I think I am very brave,” she said during the album’s press conference this week.
It's interesting because you rarely expect this from someone as big as Jolin Tsai. You think because she's famous and everything, she doesn't deal with her own insecurities and problems but we all have something that bugs us, and we all have something that troubles us. We really respect her for bringing these to light and being open about it. It's really inspiring for us.

[POLL] What do you guys think of Jolin Tsai? What are your experiences with crazy beauty standards?
Personally, I've heard so much about not being tall enough, skinny enough, too dark skinned. As well as having two dots on my nose haha. The list goes on and on. When I was younger, it was actually something that I was really insecure about. Insecurities don't really go away, but you just get comfortable and accept them. I used to ask my mom why she wasn't taller - especially since I loved basketball growing up! It was really a bummer for me. A big stepping stone for me was realizing that I can only control so much, and there's no point being upset about things that I can't change. Not only that, but also embracing the other things that I had going for myself :) Realizing that trying to live by Media/ Society's standards is an impossible task that even celebrities (Like Jolin Tsai) can't do. When it's all said and done, I'm definitely a lot more comfortable with myself now compared to a couple of years ago. :) What about you guys? Would love to hear your stories.

There’s always going to be beauty standards. I personally believe we need to change our mindsets and learn to love ourself just the way we are. Of course there will be days everyone feels insecure including myself but having that healthy mindset and loving oneself will help in the long run.

I'm 5'9 at 15 and here in India it's like really tall for a girl cuz most girls are just 5'5 or 5'6. So basically middle school boys made fun of me by calling me names. It wasn't too severe but I was really insecure about my height and the fact they said stuff just made me more insecure. Now I'm trying to look at my height from a positive view with the the help from my best frnd.

看完許多怪美的MV觀看影片，底下都有數不清的人說“應該”去了解MV真正的含義，或你們理解錯誤“請”你們去做功課，類似這樣的回覆太多太多了，就是因為太多了我才想說(這裡比較少，但我還是看到了，這支影片是我看的最後一則影片，就寫在這。)
其實每個人欣賞的角度都不同，我們為什麼要去要求別人“應該”如何來欣賞這隻MV，為什麼要求別人必須看到跟我們一樣的東西得到跟我們一樣的結論，難道只有看懂了才能欣賞和分享嗎？
我記得最一開始有類似這樣的影片時大家只覺得越來越多人喜歡Jolin，越來越多人欣賞她的作品，他們說覺得jolin是一個非常棒的歌手並且美的令他們驚艷，我們感到很開心很驕傲，但現在我們怎麼開始要求別人“應該”怎麼欣賞jolin，這不是好現象。
如果只是單純覺得MV的含義很棒，很希望更多人知道，那我們可以說：jolin這支MV想傳達的不只這麼多，如果有興趣可以多多了解。這樣是不是比較好。而不是批評別人不懂以及要求別人去懂，我想，對jolin個人而言當她完成這個作品時也只是希望更多人理解她想傳達的，而不是告訴我們“應該”懂得她想傳達的吧。
是的...你的提醒挺好的,我們太習慣帶著主流的知識&標準去看世界,所以"習慣"用"應該"來要求自己或他人,所以即便認同or感動Jolin的作品,但若未覺察,就會不小心陷入"慣性"的陷阱中。我個人不追星...但覺得Jolin的MV真的挺棒的...總是能促發人反思,也值得讓人靜下心來重新看世界&自己在哪裡!!很棒!! you too~

I thought that 怪 also means "weird" hence it can also be interpreted as "Weirdly beautiful", a beauty that's not mainstream or a beauty different from others; sending a message where all people are beautiful in their own way...

It’s very impressive that entertainers use their influence to address social issues. Jolin is one of the top singers in Asia but has been heavily criticized for being plastic since she’s gone through many procedures herself. Not a fan of the melody in this particular song but at least it gets people talking.

It’s sadly not just Asian culture that focuses on paler skin ,ever since I was young my mum ( we’re African) has always been concerned about appearance everyday she would criticise me on how “dark” I was or how “fat” I was and that I needed to be lighter and skinnier that it has really got me worried for todays society. If you guys realized, at the very end she’s actually smiling whereas at the beginning she’s not. Also, the stuff in her brain was perfect and neat at the beginning, but at the end some of them are broken. Overall, she accepted who she really is and all the imperfections in her life.

It means pretty beauty.
Because 怪 has two different meaning. One is strange, another is special, pretty, very...etc.

I honestly don't really fit in the beauty standards of my country (too light-skinned, too skinny, not curvy enough, flat chested, super young/innocent looking, too small).
But when I started looking into other cultures and their beauty trends, I realized that a lot of the traits that I hated about myself were considered beautiful in other countries (in East Asia, for example); so instead of comparing myself to all these celebrities that are considered beautiful in my country but look nothing like me, I spent more time learning about these countries and their cultures, and getting to appreciate them a lot.
And a few years later, I can say I gained a lot of self-confidence, and the things I used to hate the most about my appearance are now the things I am the proudest of!
This is really inspiring. Thank you for sharing this. Beauty standards really are relative to the environment you're in. I've met several girls who went through the same experience as you. They never fit their country's standards but then they went somewhere else and suddenly they fit. From that alone, just realize that meeting all the standards is impossible. Just because society's standards say one thing, it doesn't mean it's the truth :)
So the way I understood it, the reason it starts with the side of her head and ends like that is all of this is inside of her head (or everyone's head) and about mentally setting yourself free. I read from another comment before the scenes in the MV were actually things that happened to her - like things people criticised her about (having a bit of a belly, etc).
