So close to tears it's unbelievable. If I was better at reading lyrics AND seeing the video, and was able to grasp not just portions of lyrics... I'd be a sobbing mess. Thanks for putting up with me!
Both of these songs were so incredible. The sounds, her voice, the beats... I never mentioned it but the vocalizing in the beginning of Life Sucks was amazing... Very dreamy. But most of all, the lyrics in both songs really struck me, especially now that i've had the chance to check out the lyrics on the side. Wow. Jolin is an absolute artist, and beautiful person... She deserves so much.
I guess i'll start tossing SOME form of social media in somewhere as well... so if at all interested...

Love Jolin. Her music production is amazing but most of all, she pioneers in using her platform to send a strong message. Despite being in east Asia where the culture is very conservative, she continues to be a strong and vocal LGBT ally and now with life sucks, brings mental health into public discussion, for, as she shows in her MV, everyone of any background, rich, poor, whatever can experience those moments of depression. I think that her album "Ugly Beauty" is probably the best she's ever released and is my top 1 album released in 2018 and possibly this year as well. There is no single track that doesn't shine for me. Jolin has been in this industry for at least 2 decades and she is huge in Asia. Not to throw shade at kpop, but it's rather saddening that kpop groups that do not have as much depth as Jolin r getting more appreciation in the west. In fact, she's really the only pop artist right now that makes these meaningful music that truly challenge cultural norms. Even western songs are more concerned about sex and butts.
It is sad for me too, but I think it is because a lot of the Western fans are teenagers, so they naturally follow the younger idols (in early 20s) in Kpop. In Kpop, all the older and better singers also don't get as much recognition. The whole Kpop industry is full of new and good-looking idols constantly coming and going all the time. In Korea, most Koreans outgrow their idol worship stage when they enter college and like different types of music, e.g. indie music. So I sometimes find it kind of amusing/puzzling that a lot of Western adult fans are into Kpop idols that target mostly teenagers in Korea!

Miko Wu I also feel like Jolin Tsai and Taiwanese music in general has more depth and meaning to it which is why I recently have been really into Taiwanese music. Taiwan is really underrepresented and overlooked. I have discovered so many people taking claim of Taiwan’s music saying this is China or Taiwan is China. And that is horrible. Because this artistry and talent and message is only possible in Taiwan and from growing up in Taiwan.
I agree and wonderful artists like Jolin are not even known in the west of among non Asians. Many are just into Kpop but I am into Taiwanese and Chinese entertainment more as it is more meaningful to me. I have liked Chinese and Taiwanese entertainment since the 80s. I listen to some Kpop but not much. Kpop is so popular in the west and all over the world while Jolin is still unknown in the west and to non Asians. I love how she uses her music and star power to address many issues in society and tries to change the world. I know that Kpop group Bts does that too, but I must say that they don’t talk about LBGT stuff much due to the homophobic society and country they live in which is sad. Glad that Jolin has the freedom to do that as Taiwan has legalized same sex marriage.
I guess Kpop is more popular due to the trend and all. Jolin is a veteran in her field but sadly still does not get much recognition in the west or world. I hope that changes as her music and all is just so meaningful and sends important messages to the world.

Yeh Yung-chih, a third-grade student of Gao-Shu Junior High School in Gaoshu Village, Gaoshu Township, Pingtung County, was bullied by some classmates because of his gender nonconformity. On April 20, 2000 at 11:42, Yeh left the classroom early to go to the bathroom. He was later found seriously injured and lying in a pool of his own blood. He later died at a local hospital. This incident incited a discussion about gender education in Taiwanese society, which led to the revision of the original "Both Genders Equality Education Act" to "Gender Equity Education Act" in 2004. The education policy was also altered from a traditional view of sex into a more universal gender equality education system. In 2007, the Taiwan's Ministry of Education filmed the documentary En Rose. In 2009, En Rose was released and used at high schools nationwide as teaching materials. On November 7, 2015, the documentary short film We Are All Different, Yet the Same (Story of Yeh Yung-chih) directed by Taiwanese director Hou Chi-jan was played during Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai’s "Play World Tour" in different cities. Tsai called on the public to pay attention to the issue of gender bullying in schools. On December 26, 2018, Tsai included the song "Womxnly" (玫瑰少年) on her 14th studio album Ugly Beauty in memory of Yeh Yung-chih. The song won the Song of the Year award at the 30th Golden Melody Awards in the following year.

You mentioned that she has videos going as far back as 9 years but she's been around for 20. She was Taiwan's Britney Spears in 1999 XD. This is her 20th year in the industry so some of the uploads on that channel might be from 17 years ago. She's changed a lot over the years and I appreciate her more these days because of how she never just stops and is always constantly making music and videos that feel new. This is someone who started out not knowing how to dance or tell her left foot from her right, according to the early dance instructors she worked with lol

In one of her interview, Jolin mentioned that the society has been promoting "Positivity" for a personal development. However, she disagreed with the statement. To be a mentally healthy person, one must embrace negativities in his/her life. Therefore, in the lyrics she said, "Shake your hand with ‘negativities’ then everything will be solved." Essentially, she's encouraging to be negative and then make a truce with it.

By the way, in "Life sucks", there is a line (13:41)"Well said. You fall down, you lie down", well actually in our culture, we tend to encourage people by saying "You rise again from where you fall down", so people feel surprised and suddenly attracted by the almost opposite/ negative sprite in that line, which basically says "well i can't rise again, i just want to lie still when i fall. Give me a break."

I really, REALLY love Jolin, there really is something about her that pulls me in completely. She really is someone great, I hope she get's as much love and respect as I HOPE she does... I don't know that much on how LGBT rights are respected over there, but she's so strong and brave to have a powerful opinion like that, and STICK to it regardless. Truly amazing to me...
