    That fast water flow can be only from the big water openings in the hull (sea chests and exhausts ).
    It s very common the sea chest valves letting water in if they havent been operated for longtime and whenever you remove an exhaust hose to take the inox tube out of the way for turbo removals or gearbox removals etc you need to properly seal the tube from inside and outside .

    Isn't there an alarm that goes off when there is too much water in the bilge?
    How is it possible that such amounts of water collect in the bilge unnoticed?

    • @johnclamshellsp1969
      @johnclamshellsp1969 7 місяців тому

      Right! Common sailing vessels have bilge/water alarms. Up to and including APPS on the phone to alert anytime. Even drift alarms too. So!
      Repair crews work on boat day before.
      Boat partially sinks.
      Not one dam alarm goes off on a mega million dollar yacht.
      VERY FISHY sounding.

    Now while I only have a very small yacht in comparison to Stefania, it is left unmanned for most of the time over winter in a very safe marina. I leave it on shore power and it is monitored and (mostly) some functions controlled remotely. I can control pumps, heating, dehumidifiers, lighting etc remotely it has CCTV and I can get the marina staff to go onboard if anything need attention. SO why not the big boat ?

    • @lowandslow3939
      @lowandslow3939 7 місяців тому +3

      With a boat worth tens of millions of dollars, you don’t take the chance of fire or flood. They are very complex vessels with lots of machinery running 24/7, under constant supervision by the crew. Insurance companies may have requirements that the boat be manned at all times. In my twenty years as a Chief Engineer, I can count the number of times on one hand that a boat was left unmanned while in the water. Shipyard periods can be a different story.

  • @csjrogerson2377

    The wind in Genoa in the winter comes screaming down the valley from the north (the one where the bridge collapsed) at about 50kns gusting 70+ Vessels berthed stern-to at Molo Vecchio get the wind at about 20-30 degrees on the stbd bow and it really pushes very hard to leeward, hence port quarter damage. I used to put 4 or 5 ground lines on the bow (3 stbd & 2 port).

      Its a Benetti Classic 35m. It was a total right-off the day it was built.
      This yacht hasn't seen proper maintenance in years. Look at the lack of gloss in the blue paint and the cap rails haven't seen varnish or teak oil since the old King died. $5.2 million for a 22 yr old Benetti Classic - someone is having a giraffe.

    Wouldn't/shouldn't there be multiple pumps and alarms if they weren't working? Like, I understand they can fail, but it should have immediately alerted somebody and there should have been some sort reaction protocol for such a situation? I have a $35 water sensor in my basement and a pump that was maybe $150. I would know in 5 minutes if I needed to run that pump, and could have another pump and a generator there in less than an hour if all hell broke loose. I just don't understand how a $5million boat with crew could have so much water before they reacted.

    If something like this happen to you , call an emergency diver responder ( they have diesel/gasoline external water pumps that can pump tons of water in few minutes ) and use a waterproof canva from underwater to slowdown the water inlet .
    Make sure nobody gonna dive under the boat as he might get trapped , Canvas shall be applied like a curtain from one side of the boat to the other by pulling lines .
    If there arent fin stabilizers it will be easy , those Bennetti most probably have already fin stabilizers .
    That s why you need an engineer onboard or Captain/Engineer .

    Redundancy?it's hard to imagine many millions of dollars being so carelessly floating on the water with its security in the hands of a bulge pump..if it's my millions,im gonna have 7 or 8 bilge pumps as well as a massive pump flow capacity pump onboard and having different backup power sources on different circuits.

    Is the size of a yacht inversely related to the integrity, honesty, and intelligence of the owner?

    a boat does not sink from a disabled bilge pump... a boat should be able to remain floating without a bilge pump.

    A very small point but I believe you are mis-pronouncing Stefania. Assuming the yacht is supposedly Russian owned the correct pronounciation would be;
    StefanIA - Stefan YAA.

    And this is exactly why there's no reason for you not to be millions of dollars one small seal on the whole thing goes down anything costing over $100,000 anything costing over $10,000 should be able to stay afloat on its own without any problems that's ridiculous that a yacht needed a bilge pump in the first place there shouldn't be anything seeping or leaking Sue the yacht company for design flaws

    no offence but the bilge pump not working is not the cause of the leak it could be the cause of the sinking but there shouldnt be that much water entering that it sinks a yacht in a few hours in the first place . say he was on open sea and his bilge pump is broken aslong as your not taking on water that shouldnt be a issue a yacht shouldnt be depended on a bilge pump to stay a float in normal circumstances

      I agree, we just read what was said about the cause of the partial sinking. More likely to do with the sea chest.

    A boat shouldn't leak so much that it would sink if a bilge pump failed.

    Note to self do not buy a mega yacht even if you win Powerball lottery. It's a money pit.
