    Brilliant way of teaching Tinman.
A lot of people will just talk about how they do it but you talk about all different ways that other peoples are doing stuff and encourage people to try out different stuff and learn what you prefer. Your a good teacher bud and Iv learnt a lot from your channel.
👍 I can’t wait for that 038 mag to be running and seeing what she’s like in the wood. ✌️

Tinman, you are a great inspiration to me and probably many others! You're thorough explanation on your procedures is excellent. The way you explain things makes me feel easier about diving in to my 038 project saws. Thank you so much! You are the bomb! :)

I did my personal 038 mag2 a year or two ago, quite a fun project. I started with a deleted base gasket and adjusting port heights to compensate for the lower jug height, slightly widened the exhaust, reshaped the intake port to round instead of the factory D shape and ran a different intake boot to match. Slightly increased volume on the transfers and smoothed all transitions. Smoothed out casting ridges on the pistons, broke edges, etc etc. Higher flow air filter and built a triple outlet muffler for it with minimal baffling inside. Advanced timing by 1/2 a keys width. Running 100LL av gasoline w/50:1 synthetic oil. Im very happy with the results, revs well, good throttle response and tons of pull. 25in bar with full comp chain and it pulls it no problem even buried completely in oak. Great tips in the video, cleanliness goes a long way on the install, and I always soak bearings in 2 stroke oil before first firing along with a nice coat on the piston as well.

TinMan: Thanks for all the videos, knowledge, and inspiration. I lightly honed, the cylinder, and put in fresh new Cabor rings (Stihl 028). After second heat cycle, the saw was impossible to pull over. I took off the cylinder, and found tons of cast iron dust in the top end, nothing below the bottom of the BDC piston level (wet with oil). Have you also ever had that happen ? Question is open to everyone of course.

Great honest information about boosted-power, ported saws. I really appreciate it, because if I’m going to go after more speed & power by porting, modifying my saws, I’m glad to know the truth that there are consequences 😊

Love the 038’s especially as you can pick up the 038 super real cheap and turn it into a mag with a little work on the cylinder bolt holes. Iv done this a few times now and when ported they run like a 660 on a 24” bar but much less bulky and a little lighter👍

Definitely agree with the narrower piston skirt has more wear and doesn't last as long. Tried it with a ms390 topend popup piston and narrowed the skirt on both the intake and exhaust side as much as possible to get piston weight as low as I could. Honestly don't remember how many grams I got out of the piston I could tell over time it was slowly loosing compression so I pulled it down and looked at the piston and it definitely had wear marks on it. Only did it for a hotter ms290 sleeper lol little did people know it was a 390 topend. Ordered a new hyway cylinder that they have a new casting of a closed port version witch I do feel makes a bit more torque up top then the open ports torque down lower. Another thing with stihl I do see is how wide their exhaust ports are. With what stihls I have ported I never did widen them anymore just left them alone for that reason of grabbing a ring. Very interesting video. Been going back and catching up on the videos havent watch yet. Always excellent work and very good explanation👍

In our snowmobile race engines we wash the cylinders with hot soapy water. Blow dry and then wipe them out with WD-40 and paper towels. Keep wiping them until the towels come out clean. A tip from Millennium Technologies.

You should get you an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning up carbon. I have one for reloading ammo. It’s big enough for cleaning up carburetors and other small engine parts and works great getting things clean where you can’t see or touch them.

The oem one is multi colored and has 2 blue lines where it must have gotten hot. Thanks for any input big dog!

Great video buddy! Sometimes you’ll jack around and build that Maserati saw but it’s just not going to be as reliable as the diesel F-250… type build… sanding all the edges of the piston and shaping it up nicely is my absolute go to for great performance and long lasting builds… I drilled a hole in a 3/4” spade bit to allow the pins to pop through so I can chunk the pistons onto my cordless drill then I wet a sheet of 1000 or 1500 and just spin the piston in my hand!!! That’s a great way to reduce your piston’s diameter… it’s a great quick tune up if it’s a piston with some scratches or line’s on it… and there’s old spade bits everywhere… since there’s only a couple of nuts like me who grab drills that I can bring home to sharpen! I just read piston clearance should be between 0.02 mm & no more than 0.07 mm on a Honda RS125 2 stroke....Problem is, clearance measurements vary for different engines & clearance measurements vary at different areas on the pistons.
I never realized just how much out of round modern pistons actually are. Most pistons have a slight taper with the skirt bottom being wider than the crown. Then on top of that, some skirts are oval/egg shaped while the ring area & top is perfectly round. On top of that, some skirts also have a barrel shape to it along with being slightly oval. The barrel shape on the skirts, straightens the profile shape (helps keep it straight up & down) & makes it so only a small area of the skirt is riding on an oil film layer between the cylinder wall instead of a larger skirt area for less drag. I'm guessing small 2 stroke engine pistons have a simpler shape. So much engineering & experimentation involved in engine making. All the small details end up making a big difference. Which is what worries me, missing one small detail when rebuilding a car engine & you just thrown away a bunch of money & time/labor.

Less is more … IF you want longevity from your chainsaw that is. Widening ports WILL decrease ring life and CAN inhibit flow velocity, higher compression will also do a number on the rings causing accelerated wear with the bonus of a substantial decrease in bearing life. Saws are fun and it’s educational to see how much power you can get for sure…. However that’s on your dime. IF charging folk $ for saw builds LONGEVITY is paramount even if you leave a fuzz on the table
