When I logged, the guys in the woods cutting the trees used the 044 Stihls and I worked the landing using an 056 Stihl. I grew to love both of those. The 044 were much better in the woods because they were lighter.
My papaw gave me his 038 mag when I was 15. He told me if I could crank it I could have it. I still have it and use it every time I cut wood. I’m 16 now
Great show and tell, pleased we don’t have smell a vision 😂 out of my stihl collection I enjoy running my 028 AV SUPER. runs so well and it’s only cutting for our own bit of extra home firewood. So keeping sharp and clean it’s doing great 👍💪
I picked up a 038 Super a few months ago, I put a new 22 inch bar and chain on it, runs like a dream, the old Stihl saws of that era are amazing work horses.
nice i have a 038 super ,got it with 4 other saws that looked liked they lived in an crude oil tank tore it all the way down and ported it with the help of this channel, thank you much, and it rips makes me laugh every time i use it
I have an 038 Mag waiting for a thread repair on the spark plug hole - at least that meant it was cheap to buy! There are loads more 308 and 038 Supers around in the UK and Ireland that the Magnums. Stay clear of aftermarket air filters as the choke butterfly is built into them and the aftermarket filters can leave you pulling your hair out when trying to tune it.... Aftermarket dual port mufflers work well and remove the inner baffles in the muffler or just drill a few holes in the baffles. Makes a big difference. Bing and Tillotson carbs are interchangable plus Tillotson are still in production. EDIT - you covered the air filter and choke issues in the video.
The company l worked for had 050 and 051 Stihls hard to start when they replaced them with Husqvarna 2100 s l loved it sold me on them never went back to stihls, ran some since but still prefer Huskies
I have this same old 038 magnum saw and I also have the 044 as well. I still reach for the 038 every time I use one of them. The saw was given to me back in the 1980 s and was told they couldn't keep it running. I put a carburetor on it and I have never spent another dime on it other than bars and chains. I also clear lots so the saw sees a lot of working time every week. It's one of the best as far as I'm concerned.
"I love showing you this stuff"... and I love watching it. Like you said, somebody has to show you these things and I've no one else around to show me. Show me as much as you can, even when you think it's mundane or even boring. For instance, in my experience working on old saws is, by percentage of time spent, mostly cleaning. Show us how you clean these saws up, because you're probably way better at it than me! Love seeing a Stihl on here, and I'm super excited about the SXL-922 because I love Homelites!
Great video Tinman, bought my 038 MAG new in the mid 80's and put about 4 to 5 hours on it yearly. This spring the saw needs a going over to see what needs replacing and your video will be a great help.Only thing ever done to the saw is change the Bosch plug to a NGK and replaced the bar last year. The hard maples have gotten larger on my bush lot over the years and the 038 MAG still has work to do buckin up my firewood.
Great video, look forward to seeing more. The 038 Mag was my first “Real” saw back in the early 80’s. I still have it to this day, always been a Stihl guy.
Really Really good! thanks! I have an 038 Mag and it looks like you just steered me in the right direction. I look forward to more from your channel. thanks for the share!
Yes indeed a stout saw . As tough as it is, good thing you go through them as tempting as it is to hear another motor run! I'm going to follow you close on the 038. Thanks for the good info tinman.
I bought a 038 mag new in 1987. I have cut conservatively over 350 cord's of firewood. Not to mention all the limbs and brush that go with that. Sparkplugs , bar and one pull rope fell three trees yesterday. Still running good. Kind of hard to start only cold. Pretty hard to beat that for $470.
How ironic Tinman, I'm just parted up with a new set of rings and fuel tank for a buddy's 038 magnum. Timing is perfect to get some real world diagnostic information on this build of yours. Great power saw stock, I'm looking forward to seeing what numbers you'll be using if you decide to port Fab Willy's 038.. Great video and walkthrough.. Keep em comin brother
Good nostalgia with those old power saws. I don't work on so many these days but always throw a new set of crankcase seals in one thats been laid up, even if they pass a pressure test its pretty common for them to develop some degree of leak when being put back into service, it makes the difference between a saw that runs 100% to a saw that's slightly off and harder to tune.
Nice video Tinman. Pressure testing the saw is always a good idea as well, I have seen many of these old Stihls that the case gasket leak, alot of times into the oil tank. I have found that my 038 Mag II with full wrap yet heavier than the 044 balances better with a longer light bar. I learned a few things about port shapes working on 038s. I really like the 038 mags, they were well built saws. The only real downfall as with all Stihls even the new ones today is filtration.
I keep going back for more. I’ll fan it over to u guys Sounds like sharing a bedroom with my younger brother in the 80’s and the little monster passing wind like there no tomorrow Memories. Smelly ones lol
I have the 038 Super, it is a great running little saw. That says something especially me not bring a Stihl guy. The one I got had water in the fuel and oil tank also in the crankcase.
Excited for this series, when I finally get enough confidence from watching your channel, I will use the information from you to work on my 038 AV Super ll. So I'm looking forward to see what you do with this saw since it's so close to mine.
I got a free 038 Magnum in a box today in several pieces that's been sitting in a shed for at least 4 years, was planning to use it for parts but looked at it a bit and decided to see if I could get it running. Cylinder had a couple lines in it but was noticeably better than this. Spent about 15-20 minutes working on it and eventually got it to fire up. Missing a couple things but it runs great. Think I'm going to pick up an 8 tooth sprocket for it and run a fairly small bar just to do firewood, I don't do a ton of big cutting and I can borrow my dad's 064 or 084 if I do wind up with a big tree lol. This is the first saw I actually own myself, probably not going to do a ton of performance stuff to it since it's nice having something reliable to cut with. Edit: I think the 2 bolts on the filter holds the carb on on these. That's how mine is and snugs up well. No gap, carb doesn't seem loose when running.
Just got looking at parts diagrams, looks like I am supposed to have the nuts there on the carb. Another thing to add to the growing parts list for this saw.
hey thanks for the knowledge and takin us through this have been a looger for a lot of years got my ticket herenin australia on a stihl 044 thanks again
I'm currently working on a 391. I got it for free, no compression. Took the muffler off, and there was no visible difference between the rings and the piston, scored worse than I've seen so far. Got it mostly taken apart (almost 1:00 in the morning for me), and will take the piston off tomorrow. I'm going to get a hyway cylinder and pop-up piston for it. All of the bearings feel good on it, and it doesn't show any discoloration from overheating. I think the guy who owned it just ran it hard while the metal was cold. I'd almost guarantee that it has never seen a cleaning in it's nearly 6 years of service either.
Hey there Tinman! I'm really excited to see this rebuild. Years ago I had an 038 Magnum II. The thing was a total beast, and I have no idea why I let that saw go. I think it might have had to do with the weight factor. Keep up the great work and instruction, as it is deeply appreciated 👏
In the states where a saw or a piece of equipment sits for some time over summer, you wouldn't imagine how many I get to get started and mud dobbers have built nests in the muffler and under the top cover. 2 041s and, 2 056swith the setup on the filters.
I ran mac 850 and partners p70 before the 038 the 041s were like an outboard . then the 44s came out o yah 34 44 64 nice company in the woods piece cutting.!!!
Hi Tinnman!!😀😀 I used to log with the 038 super saws before the 044 came out. They were great saws!! Farmertec huztl makes a 388 witch is the clone to the 038 magnum. I have one of them and just love it. I have had no trouble with it at all so far. It's a great firewood saw. Take care buddy!!😀😀 Logger Al
The 038 and 028, in a lot of seemed to be some of the last of the "pro-sumer" saws Stihl sold in North America. In the same way that the echo 590 is the cheaper, slightly older technology variant of the 620p the 028/038 used a little bit older tech but hung around to be sold as a cheaper option alongside the 024/026, 034/36, and 044 that eventually replaced them. They're cool saws, especially the 038 Mag2 but I'll still take my 044 10/10 times if only for the fact that I can't stand those forward facing chain adjuster screws lol.
I ran an older 028 magnum while cutting firewood last fall. And omg did that thing scream. I’m from the upper peninsula of Michigan. And I absolutely feel in love with it.
@@Saw_Squatch you’re totally right. And the gentleman that let me use it, picked it up from a rummage sale for $50. I couldn’t believe how light it was for the power it had. It’s like indistructible.
@@nicholasblohowiak29 especially the 028 mag, the regular 028 AV/woodboss is still a super reliable saw but it's a little heavy for the power compared to the 026 but the 028 mag pull much better for the weight compared to the regular 028. Definitely capable of pulling a 20" bar
@@Saw_Squatch that’s the size of the bar that was on the one I was using. And It ran through the wood like butter. I liked it better than my 455 rancher. Way lighter.
Interesting. :) My 024 has no scores on the piston from the exhaust side, but the compression is very low. Weird is that it starts and runs great, and the hanging test is fine. It could be scored intake side of the piston I guess.
I got an 038 magnum 2 from my uncle two years ago, hardly used. Runs great except I dropped it a log and broke the handle on the bottom. I wonder if new gas tanks and handle are still available as I plastic welded it but it looks pretty welfare now,I wanna treat it good as it’s still a great saw. It has full wrap bars on er as well,Pairs up nicely with my 066 when I’m cutting big wood. Hello from British Columbia 😎

I just did a video using my 038 mag and ms 391 that I will be posting on this coming Sunday. The 038 is a sweet saw with plenty of torque and has a much deeper sound tone.
I have at least one 038 out in my garage - maybe two. Pretty sure they’re not the “Magnum” variety but they’re definitely a worthwhile saw nevertheless. Might have to tweak one up a bit. 👍
I got a roper tractor out of a shed this summer that had been there atleast 10 years. The gas was that bad, and what was in the fuel line was basically gelled. Luckily it was ethanol free, but I don’t think it would have made it one more year and recovered.
I know that stanky, skunky fuel smell well lol. I did an old 45+ year old Stihl 020AV that the tank had the fuel that was probably over 30 years old maybe older. The tank had a Bubble gum like goo in it. It ran on the leftover fuel in the carb for a few seconds it actually reved up and idled on a tiny prime on that old fuel 😱
How do you like the Hyway cylinders? I bought the meteor kits from wolf creek one for a 066 and 044. The second my bit hit the edge of the port the platting chipped off like nothing big pieces. Kind of sucks but got it handled. I had to really go slow and make sure the bit was going into the cylinder while cutting and not away pulling the platting away from the cylinder if that makes sense. I had to use single cut bits and Diamond burrs. It was a good learning experience.
TWO Questions: Where can I get a bing carb kit, and two what other carb will fit the 038 Magnum! I have two 038 magnums. One I am the original owner of and one I just gladly paid $600 for...I know,I know but what are you going to do...looks to be in better shape than my own and I just took the pot off mine and both cylinder and piston are pristine! I want to have a carb kit or two on hand and have an alternative carb should I not be able to maintain the bings. Learning a lot from you and will be putting it to use on one of th 038's. Thanks TinMan
Is that a Germany saw or Brazil? I have a Brazil one that had the tillotson hk but had to order a brand new bing to make it run properly. Runs good now. Were they known for running hot? Seems to run a touch on the hot side above the exhaust
Fantastic Video Tinman, great explanations and visuals !! 😊 How does the 041av. and the 038 magnum differ as far as power, bore & stroke ? Thank you in advance !! 😊
i just picked one of these up for $50, pretty happy with that. needs a bit of work, hoses and mounts and little stuff. can you send a picture of where the kill switch ground cable attaches on the cases? (not on the switch side) it was off when i got it. thanks.
Just picked up a 038 Magnum. It came with a 20inc bar. For carrying in the 4wd and tree clearing work can these saws run a longer bar or is it best run with a 20inc? (located in SE Australia where the gum trees are hardwood fyi)
Honestly a saw that old even though it doesn't have much time on it I'd put seals in it nows the time to do it while your right there and not like they're expensive
I’m interested I’ve got my dad in-laws 028 sitting on the floor. New tilitson carb impulse line and it still doesn’t run great. This might be my first crank seal job.

Love me some 038
TWO Questions: Where can I get a bing carb kit, and two what other carb will fit the 038 Magnum!
Sweet👌🥳
I had to do something similar to the muffler on my 026 till I could get a new one because the bottom mounting holes on the front cover tear out.
Would love to see you hot rod this saw I have a mag pluss the super and they are great fun to run but would appreciate getting a bit more out them.
love to meetcha some day. great vid
Thank s!
Hello Tinman I got a av a super and a mag 038 I still run them
Is that a Germany saw or Brazil? I have a Brazil one that had the tillotson hk but had to order a brand new bing to make it run properly. Runs good now. Were they known for running hot? Seems to run a touch on the hot side above the exhaust
038 tinman awsome
This the smaller of the magnum 038,the bigger mag ll is 70cc. Neat old saw. I miss my mag ll. I see farmer tech makes a clone of the mag ll.
Hey hey tinman, have a good one buds.✌
It stink, stank, stunk, the who's who saw about to be Tinman'd. Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙...Tdawg.
I agree that the 044 is stronger then a 272. Particularly stk for stk. 371/2xp is a better comparison for 044/440 in my opinion.
Fantastic Video Tinman, great explanations and visuals !! 😊
How does the 041av. and the 038 magnum differ as far as power, bore & stroke ?
Thank you in advance !! 😊
Nice to see a 038 teardown tinman
Tinman would you be interested in a 041 av and a 041 av farmboss?? Both for sale
i just picked one of these up for $50, pretty happy with that. needs a bit of work, hoses and mounts and little stuff. can you send a picture of where the kill switch ground cable attaches on the cases? (not on the switch side) it was off when i got it. thanks.
nevermind, found it, thanks anyway
Just picked up a 038 Magnum. It came with a 20inc bar. For carrying in the 4wd and tree clearing work can these saws run a longer bar or is it best run with a 20inc? (located in SE Australia where the gum trees are hardwood fyi)
Honestly a saw that old even though it doesn't have much time on it I'd put seals in it nows the time to do it while your right there and not like they're expensive
That muffler is hilarious.
Great video Tinman but i cant get that stale gas smell out of my living room you fanned in here....LOL
Shoot, that piston looks new compared to the one in my daily wood saw! Lol
I’m interested I’ve got my dad in-laws 028 sitting on the floor. New tilitson carb impulse line and it still doesn’t run great. This might be my first crank seal job.
Sounds like a crank seal
Where did you get the carburetor? I need one for the 028 av wood boss that was my grandpa's.
