  • Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer in the United States. While traditionally a disease of older adults, we are sadly seeing an increase in colon cancer incidence and mortality in young people. Screening for colon polyps with regular colonoscopies is an important way to access your risk of developing colorectal cancer. But what are colon polyps, why do we develop them, and how can we prevent them from forming in the first place?
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to preventing and treating colon polyps. They dive into the importance of eating an anti-inflammatory diet and optimizing gut health to create a terrain in the body where cancer is less likely to grow.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

Same here, age 62, I am reluctant to have colonoscopy, but accepted as preparation for abdominal surgery. One Polyp was found and gotten rid of. As being on a WholePlants diet for a year and before mostly vegan, exercising regularly, I was quite disappointed with the polyp, but relieved, I was in good hands in this Hospital (Havelhöhe, Berlin, Germany)

This is very interesting I’ve had crohns colitis for 30 years after a colonoscopy 3pre cancerous polyps were found but this was after a period of intense stress (We lost our income and home)I decided to completely change my diet removing dairy and found a way to heal the stress 1 year later the colonoscopy was repeated and they had disappeared with no treatment which proves diet and mental well-being are the keys I have remained healthy since 😊

I suffer from anxiety and have diarrhea when highly stressed. Since i no longer eat dairy i feel a lot better. I eat a cup of bean ( any beans as i love them ) everyday. My stomach or i should say my intestines are so much more quiet. I dont have these urgencies anymore.

Does anyone still doubt natural herbs? I have seen the great importance of natural herbs and the wonderful work they have done in people's lives. I wonder why people still spend their money on surgeries, injections, and medications every time they get sick. Natural herbs can cure all kinds of diseases, including, prostatitis, herpes, diabetics, asthma, cancer, hepatitis, etc. I have seen it with my own eyes. I was cured of lung cancer,And my sister and her husband was also cured of irritable bowel syndrome by Dr,Ayes who uses natural herbs to cure different types of illnesses. Even Ayes proved to the whole world that natural herbs can cure all diseases and he healed countless people using natural herbs. I know it's hard to believe, but I am a living testimony. There is nothing wrong with trying herbs. Contact him via (drayesherbalmedicine@gmail.com) or WhatsApp +2349028032485.Come and thank me later

You won’t find these doctors on your insurance. I am a physician of 50 years experience and 10 years ago. The insurance industry called me up and told me I was forbidden to help people, my job was to give them drugs. You will only find good quality physicians when you step outside your insurance. Your insurance pays for the CEO and all the employees and the videos on TV and advertisements everywhere but they don’t help you. There are a few things like colonoscopy they will pay for, but they won’t educate you. They’ll tell you there’s nothing you can do for the polyps. My gastroenterologist even told me I was not gluten intolerant, but I know I am. When I started eliminating all processed foods, I’m down to only a couple of polyps. When I was eating processed food, I had seven precancerous polyps each time. At least I’m a physician doing integrated medicine and I know what to do. Good luck.❤

    with alot of interest
as had so much relevance and information pertaining to me personally.
My mother died at age 48 from metastatic bowel cancer one month after being diagnosed
leaving us four teenage kids to continue our lives without her.
So much she has missed and so much we have missed of her 😢
If only more knowledge & bowel screening was more available back then maybe things might have been a lot different.
We could never understand why our fit,healthy-living, trim, happy, young mother got such an awful disease and died so soon!
I’ve just turned 60 years of age (and so blessed for every extra year I have had longer than what my mother got) and have been having colonoscopies every five years since I was 40.
This time for the first time a polyp was found of a pre-cancerous nature..
Being very aware of the increased genetic risk I have, I am so grateful to have this very valuable information you amazing Drs put out to the world.

I had a weird feeling in my abdomen, the only way to describe it was like a mild electrical impulse, I went to 3 different gastroenterologists, and since I'd had a colonoscopy about a year before (with polyps) they prescribed more flax and fiber. Finally a 4th doctor decided to do another colonoscopy and he found 2 villous ademomas, which were large and could have been serious with more time. He also said the flax seeds were causing spasms and to stop eating them. The electrical feeling was completely gone and I am sure this doctor saved my life. Get your colonoscopy and find a doctor who will listen to you.

The thing about cancer is there are hundreds of types of cancer that can kill a person. It is impossible to screen for every one of them before it is too late. If one of the body's 10 trillion cells goes wacky somewhere in the body, and they find it and cut it out, that's good. But the same behaviors and conditions that caused that DNA damage is likely happening in many other cells. The best things we can do to prevent cancer are eat an anticancer diet, don't smoke, don't drink heavily, do moderate exercise, and be careful of the environments that we live and work in.

What keeps being passed by here is peoples fear of the colonoscopy. I’m an RN, and will not have one. A dear family friend died as a result of a perforated colonoscopy. She was sent home, re-admitted in severe sepsis and died months later. I personally cared for several patients who had perforations, it was the elephant under the rug...no one wanted to say a doctor had poked a hole and then sent the person home. Also severe discomfort during the process, removal of polyps, general mistreatment and unpleasantness.

The nurse asked him to give me more pain medicine and he declined. He stopped and left me with his handprints all over my thighs. By the time I had another one, I was given propofol, I had 6 bad polyps removed. It’s been ten years and I have to do another one in 2 weeks and fortunately this dr will also use propofol. I recently had my third colonoscopy. I had three small polyps . Two were benign, one had the potential of possibly becoming cancer in time. Of course, they removed all three. I am to return in three years. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF HAVING A COLONOSCOPY. It is no big deal. Seriously, I have had way more uncomfortable nail appointments.

How common perforation is, is probably either hard to discover or know for a fact.
I have had 2. The last one, I was given a fact sheet advising the risk of perforation was low
I had polyps that were detected and removed early, when they were small. If the polyps were allowed to remain, they would have grown and the operation to remove them would have been a very bad operation indeed
The risk of colon cancer and polyps is worth weighing against the small risk of the procedure to check if there are problems, is my view

I have always been very active with an ideal BMI. I didn't smoke, and drank in moderation (low end). But I was addicted to sugar, and processed foods (removed most though during my 40's). Two years prior to the diagnosis, I had switched to vegan/whole food/plant based (almost no processed) food diet. I however, repressed my emotions and dealt with stress. my concern is constant procedures that may create new issues. The procedure to carry it out involves a laxative type solution that is not good for the body. To put pressure and stress on a patient where this may increase their BP and anxiety levels. Putting pressure on the heart is not helpful at all. I have witnessed it and regretted it. Someone who has many health issues, comorbidities, would be affected by this. If a woman has had something like a hysterectomy, that may have created new issues and a colonoscopy probe will be unable to go up all the colon. Educate and keep educating those that need to change diet and lifestyle.
Have you looked into the over 90s and seen if they had so many procedures carried out? Have you studied this group of adults where some seem to live good lives?

Yeah, my father avoided having a colonoscopy. He went to visit a friend, was feeling unwell. Friend insisted he see her doctor. He was missing 40% of the blood in his body. Turns out colon polyps had turned into cancer and he was bleeding internally as a consequence. They had to remove part of his colon. 18 months later he was dead at only 53.
Before doctors prescribe tests, they take into account co-morbidities like high blood pressure. If your doctor tells you to have a cancer screening test, have the test. Don’t leave your children without a parent.

I have had had polyps removed when a colonoscopy was done. I have an uncle and an aunt who died from colon cancer. I have sought to have a colonoscopy every three years. I have gotten resistance from my health care provider. They said every 5-years is sufficient. I am about to turn 75. It seems that this age is the recommended end for colonoscopies. Why is this? My aunt just died at age 85 from colon cancer. It seems that many medical treatments are suspended in one’s elder years as if it doesn’t matter if you get a terminal illness after age 75. Is this the rationale?

    • @TraceyMariexx
      @TraceyMariexx 8 місяців тому +1

It's not that it doesn't matter. Intervention at an older age could very well reduce our life spam before the cancer ever would. When we get older, life becomes about quality and not quantity.. In my final years, I'd rather have a few months of heaven than a year or 2 of hell from the treatments for bowel cancer. Same with my dad. He's 84 and still going strong. No more interventions as brutal as colonoscopies and surgeries. Yes he has terrible symptoms some times.. But he's loving life and it's not been cut short .. He'll leave us when his time is up and not from a procedure or treatment that may kill him on the table. So yeah, their decision to stop screening at an older age isn't because our lives aren't valuable.. It's because the time we have left, is. That's what I believe after meeting with a gastrologist over my dad's declining health. He was actually 76 at that time. His comorbidity risks outweighed the outcome of interventions, he most definitely may not have made it off the table had he had the surgery back then..

all these diseases of the intestines like Crohn, diverticulitis, polyps, hemorrhoids and even cancers are the result of the breakdown of the intestinal walls by harmful microbiomes (bacterial and viral). Along with a healthy diet, try just these three things: before bedtime a few ounces of water with lemon juice just to help finish off any digestion, also probiotics are excellent except that they barely survive to get to your large intestine so use it instead as a suppository just before bedtime as well. And thirdly sometime during the day take 2 teaspoons of coconut oil which also helps in so many ways. Not only will your poo change color , in fact it looks like baby poo, but comes out cleaner as well. Just try it for a couple of weeks and you will feel the difference. And by the way if you know someone who suffers with hemmoroids, advise them to administer a coconut oil capsule as a suppository for a few days . they will notice incredible relief. I wish you good health!

Why colonoscopy from 45 to 75 yrs old? In other words, why would they stop at 75? I'm susceptible to polyps and have them removed every time I have a colonoscopy (every 3 yrs in my case). If I were to stop at 75 yrs old, it would be a death sentence. I assume it's something from the insurance companies bcuz of the cost/benefit analysis they use.

What you eat food with is obviously important. How else do you explain why the French eat so much high cloresterol and drop NK wine all the time and don't all die of heart disease? And how about the Japanese and the massive amounts of salt they consume, but they live long lives? It must have something to do with what else they eat. Maybe the red wines with the French. Or the sea weed, green tea etc the Japanese eat.
