    Thanks for the video. I've built frames to a degree the same way but used a thin strip of wood tacked to the frame to hold the panels. Was a real pain working with strips that small. Your cedar lining gave me an idea. Next time I'm going to try mounting the panels as you did but then line the entire interior with 1/4-inch plywood with a hardwood trim around the top. I think it'll look seamless inside and save me from messing with all those small pieces. We'll see.

    great show of skill with the multiple techniques...but i believe you could have gotten that side panel look with a bit of router work..but i understand why taking the "long way around" is alot more fun😎 nice to see young men continuing the artform...and i like that you use the ol'school table saw😎

  • @Elichrusos

    As an absolute novice who is trying to learn, I found it really interesting to watch this video without narration and try to follow what you were doing and why. There are a lot of narrated videos that are great for learning from, so I think it's really good to try to test my self by following along without explanation.
    I'm going to ask a few questions, and hopefully you or one of your viewers will have some time to answer them.
    First: I don't quite understand why you're gluing the boards together at 0:20. Is this to make thicker boards for the base? Is there a reason you wouldn't just use a thicker board?
    Second: Is the machine you're using at 7:09 to square off the edges of your boards? What is this kind of machine called? I haven't seen it before.
    Third: Is the machine you're using at 3:45 some kind of sander to smooth the surfaces of the wood?
    Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer; I'm just starting to learn all of this stuff and every bit helps.

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  7 років тому +1

      thanks for watching!
      1. I glued boards together to create thicker pieces for the legs. This is mainly done for the reason of cost. I could use thicker boards to do this but would cost alot more.
      2. The tool I'm using at 7:09 is called a biscuit jointer. It cuts slots in the wood to accept a wood biscuit.
      3. The Machine I use at 3:45 is a thickness planer. Its used to bring the wood done to a desired thickness.

    I didn't say anything was wrong with pocket holes. I've used them probably longer than you've been alive. I'm old enough to be your grandfather. I'm just saying that, in making something as nice as you made, some fine joinery techniques would have been nice. In making nice furniture items, which you certainly have the ability to make, sometimes it's nice to see great joinery used. Why do you think some furniture makers use "blind dovetails?" You have great talent and I just think that pocket holes belong in shop build projects and jigs, not nice things. That's all.

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  8 років тому

      Ahh gotcha. I like the pocket holes because they are quick and easy. I have never tried dove tails or mortise and tennons. Maybe that will be a next video

    • @edwardr1250
      @edwardr1250 8 років тому

      Couldn't disagree more. If the pocket holes don't show and are strong who cares? I've built with both. I have pair of night stands, one built with pocket joinery and the other with a combination of mortise/tenon/dovetail. Functionally and aesthetically they perform/look the same from the outside. I get an equal number of compliments but one was a lot easier to build and I have to tell folks one is constructed differently than the other. I've even had skeptics make me show them the difference.

      badboyvids1 if you make the frame as you did pocket holes and routed rabbet , you can pin them using minimal amount of pins. Or use engineered panels with inset moldings. For solid panels use a tongue and groove joinery for your frames they make stile and rail bits for panel door applications.

    Since I first made the statement about pocket holes, I now see other comments. As I stated, there is a time and place for everything. I really hate to see this become a discussion that says mortise and tenons are weak and pocket holes are strong. 275 years of experience says mortise and tenons are strong. But this is not about joinery. This now is about not being able to take constructive criticism. Let's all just move on. We've had our say. And, who knows, 275 years from now, you might be able to point to the chest you made and say "see, I told you so."

    • @23Nchapin
      @23Nchapin 7 років тому

      its called a Planer. There are rollers that have small square blades running along the length of the roller that cut the wood. Top end planers can take as little as a 64th of a inch off at a single pass. But planers leave planer marks on the wood (because its cutting the wood) so its smart to sand those off before finishing the piece. Very handy and nifty tool because you get a level surface cut off at a single pass.

    Do you have plans you could provide for this? i would purchase them if so.

    • @WesHamstra

      I dont have plans. Maybe in the future. But its 36" long 18" deep and 18" tall. All the styles and rails are 2" wide and the all four legs are 2 1/8 square with a 1/2" taper on them.

      +Wes Hamstra I am completely new to woodworking, so I have an idea of what you are saying, but I guess the best way to learn is to try. Great build by the way, did you joint your boards, I know you said pine and it is hard to find quality boards here.

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  8 років тому

      +Jules Albear I did joint the boards, I just didn't show it. The pine I used wasn't quality planks. I bought ruff pine which is used for building barns. all I did was cut out any ugliness and planed everything to get it all even and smooth. You will love woodworking. I find great joy in it. very satisfying.

      +Wes Hamstra very cool, I have tried a few other projects without a jointer, and of course they dont turn out as well as I would like, so i was wondering if it was just me or if a jointer was a critical tool i was missing. Any suggestions of a jointer to go with?

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  8 років тому

      +Jules Albear I never used a jointer for the longest time. I use a general international jointer and I really like it. Watch my tapering jig video. It can be used as a jointer as well

    I just read the description. How do you only spend 60$. At home depot its 20$ for a 1x12!

    • @WesHamstra
      @WesHamstra  7 років тому

      The lumber I used is called barn boards at my local hardware store. its a 1x12 8' long. its not select lumber. it has lots of knots. its only rough sawn pine. its costs $8 for a 1x12x8. Its been awhile since I made this but I think I only used 3 boards.

      I never shop at home depot. I find them very expensive and they have very poor quality lumber
