Great review! I used the Dexcom G-6 for about 3 years and just recently changed over to the G-7. I agree with you that the G-7 has a lot of issues with "temporarily loss of readings" and actual sensor failures. You would think Dexcom would have made huge strides with these issues, but it's not the case. I love the short warm up periods, the fact that it's much smaller, and the convenience of having the sensor and transmitter all in one. Also, great that you can silence the alerts. If Dexcom could reduce the reading failures and sensor failures, they would be amazing. I guess we have to wait until they improve the app for the iPhone, or until they come out with the G-8.

Thanks for the video! My 9 year old son was diagnosed last week while in the ICU. He had his 1st endo appointment today now that he’s home. I watched your video while in the waiting room and decided to tell the doc that the G7 is what we wanted and she put the order in. We won’t be ready for a pump for a few months and they’re hoping to have the G7 compatible with the pump by the end of summer so if that’s the case that works out perfectly.

As someone who recently started wearing a CGM, I elected to go with the G7 since it was the most recent tech. I'm only on my second sensor but love the instant readings that guide me throughout the day plus not having to stick my fingers. My 5-year-old Samsung S9+ syncs up well with the receiver but I do notice extra drain on the battery, but that may be partially due to an aging battery. On Android, there is an always running glucose reading in Notifications, pulled down from the screen at the top. It's good for a quick glance. Being new to CGMs I was amazed at the waste from these. I'd love to see a dispenser that's able to be loaded with a new sensor and is reusable. Well, I can hope. Thanks for your review and insight.

@@josealemar4136 Anyone who has Type I knows how to clean an applicator. I agree with @rusa7174 on the waste. The G7 has much less waste than the G6, and I have been taking apart both the G6 and G7 applicators and recycling the plastic and metal parts for some time: ua-cam.com/video/nkwLhIz9V1Y/v-deo.html

Thanks for the review, I'm in Australia and we've only recently had the G6 added to our NDSS scheme. It's fantastic as it costs only $31.50 for 3 sensors with a transmitter thrown in. We wait with baited breath to see when/if the G7 will be adopted too. I'm keen, but have to say I'm looooving the G6, so I'm content to continue with it as long as needed.
Thanks again; it's exciting seeing Dexcom responding to user feedback with their upgrade. Fingers crossed for the lost signal issue, hoping it was a one off and you'll really enjoy it 💙

I don’t really understand it because they’re more intrusive than other systems. Medtronic has had a vibrate only option for ages (minus certain high-urgency alarms, such as a dead pump). Libre is pretty annoying but I’d say it’s less annoying than the Dexcom alarms.

The improvements in the G7 alarms is in the app software and not the hardware.

First of all I try to watch all your episodes and enjoy them all. I am on my second G7 sensor and so far I like it. You mentioned that your phone was loosing
communication with the G7 transmitter. I have also had the same problem. I have an iPhone SE Gen3 and on IOS16.3.1. I also have the new G7 receiver so started keeping both in my pocket. The G7 receiver never looses communication unless I set it down and walk away from its Bluetooth signal. I have been experimenting with my I phone by keeping it in a pants pocket on the same side as the arm that has the sensor placed. For me the problem seems to be getting less frequent. Good luck!

I recently got the G7 and the loss of signal problem was a constant problem and I turned them off. If your warranty on your G6 has not expired Medicare will for you to get a receiver for the G7. Don't buy the receiver through the company ($1200) go online and find one for about $500. I don't know how she can get sensors for $200 to $400. I was told that if I paid cash it would be $1200 per month in the US. I really like the G7 as it will alarm if my sugar gets low.

Thanks for the spot on review! I have just finished my first 10-day session with the G7 and agree with every observation. The most annoying problem is the number of signal loss alerts received for apparently no reason as my iPhone was always nearby. I, too, was hopeful that this was an issue isolated to my first sensor, but it continues with my second. Overall, the review was great and provides valuable information.

I've returned a couple of sensors due to complete failure and intermittent signal loss. It's been buggy. On the plus side, when functioning properly the metrics are great. Will give the G7 more time, but we'll see if the first few were anomalies or an unfortunate pattern that may require me go back to the more stable G6.

  • @josealemar4136

Signal loss is something I have experienced with Dexcom G6 and the iPhone app, even in occasions when the phone is in my pocket. That’s why I don’t think signal loss is a G7 problem, but rather a software/hardware issue with phones. I always use a Dexcom receiver in a pocket (pants or even in shirt) and never have signal loss problems.

I am using the G7 with the remote as I need my Samsung phone for phone service only. I live in the City of Detroit, so my phone is only a phone. I finished my first sensor's 10 days and was into the 12 hour bonus time. I decided I didn't want to wake up in the night so picked a more convenient time. Maybe 40 minutes prior to ending the current sensor, I placed my new one. Since my sugar was dropping I waited. Once I was good, I ended the first sensor and started the second. There was no delay. Apparently the 30 minute warmup occurs whether or not you've paired with the sensor. Now we don't need to go without coverage!

I'm in my first week of wearing the G7 & have also had numerous lost signal alarms. My phone was right in me or next to me each time so no reason why it's happening. my sensor was on my arm and my phone was in my breast pocket & it loses signal? It isn't about 'losing' the signal, it's a software issue. I have been in the tech world for almost 40 years - it's a software issue.

One thing I would like to see in these diabetes cgm apps is the ability to pick a ring tone or music option for alarms or just have a little more choice in that area because as a person with autism there are sounds that bother me which is why I have developer mode activated so it gives a little more flexibility and freedom

    • @DiabetesStrong
      @DiabetesStrong  Рік тому +4

Sounds like you have looked into it, but if not, have you looked at the Dexcom alert options?
If you open your app (Dexcom G6 or G7) and click on alarms you can choose different sounds for all or some of the alerts. So for example, click on "high" and then click "Sound". Here you can then choose between a large variant of different sounds.

I switched from the G6 to the G7 4 days ago. On day 2 the first sensor literally fell off of my upper right arm after a workout at the gym. I had it attached securely, with the over patch just as directed. When I got home, I attached another G7 sensor to my left arm, and contact Dexcom to have them send me a replacement for the first sensor. Today, after wearing sensor #2 for 2 days, I got a message on my phone while I was working out at the gym that the sensor had failed, and I needed to replace it. Again, when I got home I did replace it, with a G6 that I still had in supply. I will not be using the G7 until Dexcom can insure it is reliable. Very disappointed.

    • @DiabetesStrong

Have you tried Skin-Tac liquid adhesive? Put it on the adhesive part of the CGM and let it dry before inserting into your arm. You can then put the overlay patch on over the CGM. Skin-Tac really works well for me and others without using overlay patches. It also has helped many people, including myself, with the itchiness that one can get with the CGM adhesive. Hopefully Skin-Tac works for you.

I find that all the Dexcom items are extremely pricey. For example here in Australia, the Dexcom receiver will set you back $650. We have a trial starter kit containing 3x Dexcom G6 sensors for only $32.10 (normally $330), but rather strange it doesn't come with any transmitters. But let's face it, the Dexcom mobile phone app is seriously NOT THE BEST for diabetic management. Completely user unfriendly!! AND seriously the separate Clarity app should be part of the main Dexcom app.

Great reviews (all of your videos are). I've learned so much from you !
Has anyone noticed more accurate reading during the first 24 hours than the G6? My G6 readings are almost worthless for the first 24 hours. They'll run high, than quickly drop and run low. And, it is frequently needs calibration during this period.
And, due in large part to that, I do wish they would get the sensors designed for 14 days of wear --- not because I don't like changing the sensor more frequently but because I travel for work and would like to always change out a sensor on a weekend. And, I would like to leave town after the sensor has settled down and I don't have to be doing finger sticks.

I've had 3 different sensors come off the back of my arm after only 1-3 days. I called them for a possible solution. She asked me if I kept the sensors, I said no, why? It's not like I can reattach them. She said she couldn't replace them because I no longer had them. I pointed out that I hadn't asked for replacements, but wanted suggestions on how to get it to stay on for longer. I pointed out that that "over-patch" had very little surface area, and was hoping they had bigger ones or ones that stuck better. She then gave me a rapid fire lists of products that she read off so fast, I had no idea what she said, and just kept going when I tried to interrupt her to slow down. She then asked me to verify my address, and I did. She stated that I would receive my package in the mail. I thought great, she's sending me a solution for the small over-patches. Several days later, I get another sensor. Not very helpful.

An entire nerf gun's worth of plastic for the applicator. Not to mention the huge cardboard box they have to use to send all this to you if you're using mail order. Dexcom should have been investigated by the EPA by this point.

Actually hating it and may go back to G6. More loss of readings and sensor replacements. This changed and smaller amount adhesive does not work well. I never had an issue with the G6 peeling or coming off. Actually when I removed the g6 sensor, my skin almost came with it, but it stuck. It's 5:53 am and I am awake because of sensor failure, replace sensor alert after 2 days. Now I am up ordering the 2nd G7 replacement in a weeks time. I will be lucky if 90 days worth of sensors last 45 days. On my 6th sensor and only 2 lasted the full ten days. I am currently ordering the 4th replacement. At this rate Dexcom will not be able to get the replacements to me in time before they fail again. I scrub with alcohol before use, wear overpatch and another overpatch ordered from Amazon. Sometimes the overpatches are still on but sensor comes off under it as if poor manufacturing of sensor attachment to adhesive. I have hairless arms but shave anyway. I may try abdomen instead. I only changed to G7 because of lack of transmitter replacement with G6 but the convenience is not worth it when it does not stay on.

Software, and control over your own data is a huge issue with CGM's. I have still the G6, but no option to add the widget. And as a developer, I cannot even access my own data or read it using my own program. The only way to access your data is to allow dexcom to upload it to their cloud - where they can probably monetize is one way or another.
It's high time for legislators to impose manufacturers to open source their software interfaces and communication protocols. If manufacturers claim that this is a security risk, then this is bullshit: security by obfuscation is not a good security.

My son has to bring two devices, the controller and a iPod with wifi on for use at school since he doesn’t have a phone. Carrying around a phone at age 8 during play outside is not the easiest for him to do, even going to a pool can be difficult. Currently the G6 will work with a watch without data as long as it’s accompanied by a phone that is. Honestly this could be a game changer for young kids and a feature that I feel that has been overlooked for some time now. Hopefully this feature now exist in the G7.
