- Is this the future of dual cab utes in Australia? 👀
Shauno got his hands on the new 2024 Toyota Hilux from our mates at TJM & is taking this mild hybrid off-road up the Glass House Mountains to put it through its paces!
What are your thoughts on the new shift to EV 4WDs? Let us know in the comments below! 👇

I was working for Toyota in vehicle testing when we were testing the prototype versions of this vehicle back in 2018 and 2019. We tested them all over Australia in every terrain possible, often with a non mild hybrid hilux as a baseline. There was some teething problems to be expected, but the mild hybrid excelled. I was starting to think we weren’t going to see it in Australia
is the motor generator watertight?! is it a well contained unit like a watercooled alternator for example?! i want to know!
@@alanmay7929I’ve never heard of a water cooled alternator??? My old Prado one gave up the ghost after a saltwater creek crossing, so this would maybe be the same.
No advantage or disadvantage I reckon.
@@alanmay7929 of course man
@@Squidley1972they're usually expensive, aftermarket, custom made. Essential on vehicles that "can't fail".
@@hi9580 I’ve bought one and am going to do ‘the lap’ but not wanting to test the salt water over the bonnet, as no one should really.
Auto sparky/diesel fitter here
Worked on heaps of equipment with similar technology
Bought a 2024 sr5 48v not long ago and love it
Sweet! someone with an educated view. Would love to know what you think is good and bad on hybrid systems you've worked on and your views on the goods and bads of the sr5 hybrid!
Should anyone worry about water crossings at all with these?
I love how all the people that have no technical knowledge talk shit about this and we mechanics don't 😂
that bar is too wide for that car.maybe suits one with flares, bit on that car looks hideous.
@@Harry_Gersackits like they hear the word hybrid and lose their minds😂 forget the mild word and put their tin foil hats on without doing any research
I’d absolutely have one. I’d like to see the take the tech further than the mild application. It’s not new tech at all and diesel pairs perfectly with electric. There are a bunch of different variant applications
Already have one! Love it! I figure it’s in the new Prado platform and a brand like Toyota/ Prado wouldn’t do it if they hadn’t done the homework. Also no intention of doing deep water or mud.
Yeah nah less electrical the better plain and simple
yeah 70 series range for me
Yes and no. When it comes to diesels, instead of spending billions on trying to keep them eco friendly, they should just make them like freight trains and go diesel electric.
Nissan e power, no thanks
lol!!!! its called evolution! 48v is significantly way more efficient and the vehicles uses a motor/generator instead a starter and an alternator its a much robust and efficient electric system plus more and more gadgets for solar and others are using 48v.
@@mikeberry5016 there is actually a catch to that! there is a reason they havent done it but on very few specific equipments.
I wonder how expensive and hard replacing that 48V generator is when you drown it in a bog hole....
@@Pneumaticcannon probably as expensive as replacing all of the carpet and interior you just destroyed in said bog hole
If you're looking to spend 75000 to 80000 to put it in a boghole maybe not, otherwise it's a slightly more refined Hilux, I don't mind it!
"Those who drive their pickups across rivers or in ponds will be happy to learn that the mild hybrid Hilux has a 700 mm (27.6) waving depth thanks to the waterproofing of the electrification components"
What that means is you can drown this in a bog hole and afterwards still tow the V8 70 series whose alternator broke in the exact same boghole
its actually as simple as the alternator lol!!!! its just different electronics! bigger trucks have had 24volts for decades no problem! 48v means less Current and smaller cables much more efficient.
the 48v uses a motor/generator which means there is no more starter, the motor generator does all the job much more efficiently.
2 am in america, if youre watching this youre geekin
Watching at work in Texas now. Supposed to be turning wrenches... Guess these trucks can wait.

I think it’s a good innovation. It should reduce turbo lag will save fuel. Accessories using the battery will be a useful tool.
have some experience with Toyota mild-hybrid and have to say, its not really worth the money. The fuel consumption is average and due the high price no real added value for me.
Yeah nahh no good, just more complicated crap to go wrong. Good luck finding mechanics in the middle of nowhere that can work on these.
Def aye
Totally agree
Wait to you have to replace a hybrid system, heart attack. mind you everyone in Aus is spending 200k + on trucks anyways.
V8 toys are not anything awesome hilux is more powerful
Agree 👍
The roque is the pick, such a good platform, bullet proof reliability great driving dynamics and sooo comfy!
I'm happy in my 1993 fuel guzzling 80 series😂
Cheers..1994...bought cause of sooty...love it
Agree
Same.
And we are happy you have no airbags.
Yep, love my FZJ80R too but do find this Hilux interesting.
As a hilux owner myself having all that extra to save wee bit of fuel........totally not worth. If want to save fuel buy a honda fit.
The whole emissions reductions on passenger vehicles is a total shamozzle. Trucks, ships etc are where real emissions sit and lets not forget the remote emissions from exporting coal - a real inconvenience that one. John Cadogan has covered this greenwashing crap a number of times.
@@pantoqwerty i know mate. Just look at those politicians flying their own jets everywhere for bullshxt confence and yet they still got the balls to talk about emission crap.......
😂 government's don't care what you want
its nor just to save on fuel but its to significantly simplify the system and make it more efficient! 48v needs more smaller and less copper/cables size, also the truck uses a motor/generator instead of a starter and an alternator, its a much robust system.
@@alanmay7929 you call this significantly simplify the system?? which part of efficiency or how exectly it more efficient in details please??
Ayyyyyy!! 😎 Howzit Shauno!! 💪🏽 You guys should come across the ditch to New Zealand for some serious 4X4 action .. it’ll be a blast🍻
@YehhDaBoiz Harrrddd aye be awesome if they did
but bring your own sheep
I am a fan of the tech as long as it is done right. The idea comes from railway locomotives and those go for millions of miles and have been a fan of those for a while as well. The tech was bulky and heavy up until now and with the advances in super conductors I think it is a matter of time that we see something epic. I typically wait for Mercedes since they usually figure out how to engineer the pieces for longevity.
Can the hybrid Hilux go under water ? Like you always do ?
He said 700mm. Just like a normal one.
@@darrinrebagliati5365yeah but how much would it cost to replace the 48v
damn.. I thought if anyone of all the reviewers of the 48V upgrades, 4WD 24-7 would have got stuck into the drive modes off road and maybe even put it head to head with another Hilux to find any tangible differences. Maybe next time.. 🙏
Theyre borrowing it so might not have permission to throttle it.
I've got the 48v rouge. Not sure on the SR5 models but you can turn off the 48v side of things and just keep it running as a normal ICE vehicle.
How? Just disconnect battery and that's it?
Hi Shauno
I see the 48v sits in the center of the vehicle, as you mentioned it would be great if one can tap into it to use that power for accessories. But the main thing I am wondering, what is the weight difference in the mild hybrid version compared to normal hilux with the mods like bumbers and rock crawler sides. Do you feel the weight difference offroading? Is that why the Throttle response is better, for distrustion of more power faster?
Curious to hear your take on weight difference.
I should be picking up my brand new Hilux this week but it's NOT a 48 volt version. The announcement of the 48v is what got me to Toyota to order the Hilux that I did so I could get one before they all go "mildly hybrid". I don't want issues with that stuff in the middle of the Simpson.
Genuine question. How often do you find yourself in the middle of the simpson? When was the last time you were there?
@@ubernoob103 Not often enough and a long time. I, like a lot of middle aged Aussie men, have plans, dreams and desires and I've been busting my guts doin overtime saving up to chase some of those dreams and desires before I can't. My use of the term "middle of the Simpson" was meant figuratively and literally next year all things going close to plan. So if your after advice on the Simpson I'm not your man. I know some stuff from my research but I still have a lot to learn. Cheers
Just got mine, Non 48v, and i got a manual one before those are no longer available.
the one thing we know is electrics fail
Awesome video as always Shauno.
that start stop is bloody annoying and often turns itself back on when the car is restarted. you save next to no fuel but i bet the cost of replacing the started motor and belt will offset anything saved anyway... these emmission rules are getting ridiculous.
If it's like the Honda's, high voltage battery overheats this shuts off the DC dc charging and your start battery goes flat 😢
Not a fan of mild hybrid. Complicated for little gain.
Looks awesome Shaun and even better cuts down the fuel bill which is even better. And as you was saying it’s still a Hilux you can not go wrong with that
I think if you want basic, get a 70 series. The small fuel savings and small ride improvements make huge gains over time. I would be interested to know how many Kms you get from a tank in this ute
As an American we don't get the Hilux :( but i did get a new landcruiser(landcruiser pardo for y'all) hybrid and the only company i trust to build a hybrid is Toyota because they have been doing it for 20 years.. I am not sold on EV's but i think hybrids are a logical step. i just wish we gotten a diesel hybrid version.
You guys get the Tacoma over there, that looks slightly different but is the same when it comes to the engine and mechanics etc. (If i am correct)
@@mauss9been different in all ways from the hilux since 20 years ago or even more
Won’t happen diesels don’t sell well in America for passenger vehicles
I've had my 48V Rogue for a few months now and you barely notice the hybrid setup at all. Most new Toyotas come with start/stop tech so if you're used to it already, you won't notice a thing. The only thing missing is brake hold. The Kluger has it and it's great at the lights. Otherwise the Rogue is a great trade between work and play.
I can’t see this being any use for any type of work, unless you mean doing the grocery shopping.
@shiraz1736 I'm not sure how 48V would help with grocery shopping, but happy for suggestions? My non-"hybrid" Hilux was useless at buying groceries.
It's useful if you spend time on the road and I wouldn't dismiss it if you haven't experienced it...
@@vernonprasad3866 Na I’m still chugging along in my 89 Navara single cab. Great for carrying tools and equipment around, no coffee cups though and not having an infotainment system thing is killing me.
@shiraz1736 if you see the inside of a new Ranger, you'll appreciate not having an infotainment system. Cars are getting ridiculous now and the "iPad screens" can be annoying if you want to change a setting while driving. And surely you could make your own coffee cup holder? Some plumber's pipe, a bracket and screws should do ya right
Basically, a bigger battery and a bigger alternator/motor that give or take power.
I arrived a sceptic but this sounds promising actually 🤔
Your the perfect driver to test out the 4x4 capabilitys
Mint looking rig by TJM, another great review, would love to see a comparison between 4 cylinder 79 series and a v8 79 series plus a 4 cylinder 79 series and a hilux
Check out car expert. There's an episode on the 4 vs 8. Including a towing comparison
We're glad you like the build!
In Western Canada and I Luv a 3am 4x4 post thanks Shauno and team. All the best guys
If they go like the hybrid rav4 with more options towards 4wding. I think i would buy one then. I drove a hybrid rav4 and i reckon it was an absolute beast, are the axles in the front any bigger ?
Great review mate!
I love my new 48v Hilux.
me to!
Will the generator be better than the alternator in the mud and water?
If they were going to go hybrid I don’t see why they didn’t opt for a petrol engine. Even a v6 petrol option
I just want to tell you and your mates thank you and you guys are awesome. I love your channel and wish I was there. Stuck in America. Not a bad place to be. Bidumb is gone 😂😂. I just wanted to thank you for all the hard work you guys do. Keep it up👍👍😎 I own a 21 TRD PRO but I’ll take that beast any day you guys get all the good stuff down under. You probably know we get the Tacoma 4 cyl turbo and hybrid system. To much electronics to get wet and I don’t think it would hold up to your guys of standards. I’ll keep my old reliable Pro Thank you Shauno love both of your trucks there just amazing Sooty I hope I didn’t butcher the spelling up all the love what a machine 😢😢❤
The hybrid system is water proofed but its the future. As much as i love my mechanical manual diesels we will see these explode all over the place. The mpg increase is crazy
Start stop how much fuel is saved?
Tbh what you can save in fuel will cost you more in starter motors and battery's. Only difference is you don't see much savings but then you get the bill
actually a full hybrid makes sense for a tourer .. assuming you can charge the drive battery via your solar
Really great review mate, Ive got 1 coming in January, I was in 2 minds to order another normal one as a backup plan but after seeing your review I’m confident👍
48 volt accessories will be great especially a winch! lets see what the future brings!
Not likely to happen unless other manufacturers go to 48v, more likely to be 48v to 12v converters.
Are all new hiluxs going to be hybrid or can you still get diesel ones
how much load capacity is given over to the electrics
if the 48v terminals are exposed you could charge something like a Ecoflow Delta Max with the solar charging cable (the Ecoflow will simply think a batch of solar panels is connected and charge quite quickly!)
If it's reliable, AND they allow you to tap into the 12 volt or if they install a household power inverter, that could be an awesome addition.
I would want to know how much fuel was saved by going with this vehicle over a 'standard 2.8'. Overall, I agree with Shaun that I'd like to see a few more kilometres/years on them before I purchase one...
My question is, can it be deactivated or shut down remotely ? Got some trust issues.
Happy to have one but bring back the swing forward back seat rest. It's a PITR to get to my second battery.
Did they make it with a electric handbrake the standard ebrake on all the previous ones are horrible
No, same handbrake as old one
I think the new land cruiser here in North america comes in a hybrid option as well
I've just upgraded from a 1985 LN65 Hilux to a 2006 KUN D-4D. I don't think I will ever own one. Mine is the last of the high low stick shift models . The younger folk may appreciate it though. Cheers 👍🐕🤠
I'm surprised that jocko is not commentating on this hilux he loves his hilux 😂
its a $590 premium, and as shauno said its basically a battery setup for the fridge and etc
electric motors are some of the simplest technology out there, and batteries dont just combust because they touch water
Where is this track?
What is the cost to implement this technology, financial and environmental? What are the actual benefits/savings? Seems like an expensive bandaid to get that green tick!
When that vehicle gets in a proper crash and the electrical system is torn to pieces, can we get a guarantee from Toyota that the cars body or chassis won’t be live with 48 volts?
48volts won't hurt you.
Give me a mechanical fuel pump, points, a distributor and carby all day. 😊
Ok then go buy a 40 year old car?
@Harry_Gersack I own 2. Plus my troopy. Your comment was pretty lame

“Look mate, my Hilux is like an army Swiss knife now, I have 365 different options and gadgets for any scenario.”
“Yeh mate, but now you have 365 ways it can break down on you.”
Yeah, I agree, we shouldn't innovate or try new things at all in this industry. In fact, I preferred when it was just the Ford Mode T days. I could have any colour as long as it was black.
Wont the 2025 hilux get the V6 from the landcruiser to compete with the Ranger?
No confirmation about what engines or even when the next gen hilux even launches
This "mild hybrid" sounds exactly like my 2019 Jeep Rubicon JLU with the eTorque (Mild Hybrid). It has the 48 volt lithium battery and it shuts off when you come to a top. Although I bought a Tazer JL chip and permanently disabled that function because I hate it. Personally, I think it's adding complexity where it isn't needed.
If someone could make it work with a 48v auxiliary system, would be a game changer.
Just convert it down to 12v.
Ok, but how about the things that actually matter, what fuel consumption does it actually get. Does it get the 10% better that Toyota mentions, and what is that actually? Is it on par with other brands that overall get better with their non hybrids, or is it still behind, or does it actually beat it now. Liters/100km. Its the number 1 reason someone would consider changing to a hybrid/electric.
Im used to a tuesday thursday schedule a show dropping on a wednesday is confusing when im dont have beer cold ready for a show.!!
What bullbar is that???
How does ronny get the jump?
Great for powering accessories for tradies or touring and re-genning down hills to save your brakes. But for the second owner - a complete basket case
More tech to fk up and cost you an arm and a leg… fuel savings my ass…
I think i will be keeping my 2024 Y62(6months old) for a long time.
Even though the battery is likely waterproof rated they could have installed it behind the seat higher up on the rear bulkhead rather than under the seat. Not only would it have given further peace of mind in a flooded cab situation, but also aided in natural cooling. Is it Lithium-ion or LiFePo4?
The entire 48V system is sealed waterproof
@@Harry_Gersack Would you like to stake your life on it that it stays that way? I certainly wouldn't.
if you want you can move the 48v battery its not that hard plus the cables are much smaller too. they have tested those things.
How much are the batteries to replace 🤔
How much is the alternator and starter motor on your modern common rail diesel to replace?
Both maybe 2k was a genuine question google said 8k for the battery
I would gladly own a hybrid to drive around town. I just wouldn't trust it when the closest town is 2 days away. It's just too difficult to change parts when you're not in your shop.
I'm gonna have to pass! Just this short video has pointed out multiple issues I don't care for. The battery being located on the floor is a major concern! Not knowing about running accessories is another major issue! If a traffic light is usually 22 to 25 seconds, does a vehicle really use that much fuel if it stays running vs the fuel it takes to restart?
Oh btw it really doesn't matter where the battery is located. The entire 48V system is sealed and if you're flooding the interior of your 60 or 70 grand truck you'll definitely have other things to worry about.
@@Harry_Gersack why are you commenting when you clearly don't watch this channel?
Here in the U.S. EVs and hybrids are being pushed down our throats, but I’m happy with my 2007 FJ cruiser that is stupid reliable and simple
I agree get some more kms on it before ya jump in as it's early days on this tech but we know this is what going to happen in the future like it or not so hang onto the old school tech as long as possible
It's a Toyota, obviously engineered as good or better than anything else out there, so should be reliable as an overgrown stop start system. They probably had to go in this direction due to legislation, so be happy it's still here in this form
We need diesel hybrids like this in Canada
Unlikely diesel passenger vehicles don’t sell well in North America.
I'm in as I have a deposit down on the new Prado, whenever that lunches in mid 2024. Hang on it is mid 2024 WTF
Does it still work if the hybrid system dies?
As good as any other car with a dead alternator. While this one is less likely to fail because it's sealed watertight
@@Harry_Gersack Dont think hes talking about how watertight it is. Hybrid systems in many vehicles have been know to just shit the bed randomly. I have a mate with a hybrid and it goes into limp mode without fail after 20 mins of driving. Needs to pull over turn it of an on and then goes for another 20. He's spent thousands going back and fourth with the dealer trying to get it fixed and the problem always comes back. Each to their own but i think this is more trouble than its worth.
Ranger Hybrid is coming soon as well...I'm really hyped for it :)
Has Jocko bought one yet?
So what happens when you get water in the cab with those HEAVY, Expensive and Hazardous batteries under the back seat?
Where abouts in glass house is this
They need to give you one for a cape trip or Kimberley’s adventure if they can pass one of them adventures I’d buy one
This EV, hybrid bull shit has gone too far. Labor needs to go!
Question back, would you give up all your other rigs for this if you could only have one rig in the shed and nothing else?????? I am sure I know the answer
What a fucking stupid answer. No one who ones multiple vehicles he built himself will trade them in for a single one. Doesn't matter which.
Also he already said he'd only buy it in a few years when he can see if other people were having trouble with it.
At least watch the whole video before you talk bullshit
Toyota earned a gfys from me when the last hybrid I was asked to tow would not go into neutral and there was zero manual way to do it.

Yeah, just got one on my car
To be honest I'd like to see shauno after about 6 cans and we redo this review again....😂😂😂 not only do they close tracks they give us shit that doesn't compare

How about towing capacity please

Where’s Jockos scathing review on the 48v gone?
In twenty years, repairing that thing out in the field is going to be what nightmares are made of; far different from working on your trucks in the field now. I get lost thinking about how much stuff has to be moved in order to get to anything to do anything.
I'm a 2018 Tacoma owner. I'm on my 4th Toyota truck. I've driven them since the '85 Hilux Surf. A simple machine. Worth having in a variety of situations. BUT, even my 2018 is not a truck to have in the middle of nowhere with a serious mechanical breakdown. Nor will a fancy electronic wizardry contraption with zero user-friendly serviceable parts. How fast can you ruina. battery on a river crossing where you get hung af on a few rocks and you're in it for a minute? Not trying to play alligator versus battery analogy nonsense about being shocked or eaten, here. Just trying to figure out just how robust they really are. I run an RC car channel. I've killed a lot of electric motors and batteries, radios, etc in water from lack of proper waterproofing. It doesn't take much, either.
How about manufacturers include a good obd2 reader in every car for owners to fault find and monitor data - if they are going to make their cars more electronically complicated?
