  • Great hike for people looking for an easy trail to do. Specially recommended for beginners or families with children looking for a day out in Somiedo. Some of the highlights include views of the first hydroelectric plant of the region. The plant of la Malva is a little older than 100 years and can be considered the catalyst of industrial development in Asturias. It is still in use and can be visited prior appointment. Other things of interest include a small cave, a braña (without teitos) and the great views characteristic of this beautiful area of Asturias.
The trail is linear and starts in the Area Recreativa de la Malva (la Malva Picnic Area) and ends in Castro. With a length of 2.96 miles (one way) it is very easy to walk and would not present any problem for children. Once in Castro you need to choose between trace your steps back to the car or use the road.
Important to mention that the first 2.2 miles of the trail are uphill, but with very little elevation gain (390 feet) hence very easy. The last part, after reaching the braña, is downhill but, again, not too demanding. Concerning fountains, there is at least one in the Malva Cave. I would personally stop in the braña to have lunch while enjoying the scenery but obviously this is your choice.
Also, if you are into bird watching, don´t forget to bring your binoculars!
