You're the best! I look many "water pump replacement video" and you're the best to show how to remove the buttom by removing the little black plastic piece. THANK YOU so much! It's really appreciate. 👍
I like your method better than another I watched that completely tore the waterpump housing apart. Just for info, the pump fins will bend when the shaft turns when installing it and stay that way. Rubbing on the inside of the collar creates a seal so it can draw the water. The problem is they get hard and brittle with age or especially running it with no water which will destroy the pump in a matter of seconds. As long as it's flexible it's fine. It's critical to have the foot submerged in water or have a hose attached with water coming out before starting. I've seen them burn up completely in a matter of seconds without water.
This was very informative and helpful. Was able to to replace the impeller with ease. One thing to point out where to have the gear when you put the unit back together (forward/neutral/reverse) . I had started out in neutral but must have bumped it into forward when I was pushing back in, and then I was limited to forward and neutral only. Dropped unit back off put in neutral and second time was a charm as is working.
oThank you so so much I'm going to change a impeller on my 40HK johnson 1999 model this coming week and never dont it before. This video gave me the confidence to fix it myselft Thanks !
Good tutorial !! If I may add a little input tho !!? (Not looking to play the smartass at all here) .. you did the right thing by mentioning to put some triple guard grease inside of the impeller housing!! But you forgot to include the impeller lower plate, especially near and around the shaft !! And that plate btw show some signs of wear, grooves where the impeller center ring sits ! It's not going to wreck the new impeller but since clearance tolerances aren't to specs because of those grooves it might cause lower performances from the water pump unit and/or slightly premature failure . My 2 cents !! Hope you're not upset @ my advice/input mate !!
Having a ton of trouble getting my lower back on. I can only get is as far as having about 3 inchea left to go. Everything is lined up. Is there a certai position the gear shifterneeds to be in to get the lower unit on?
Thanks. Very clear and easy to understand. QUESTION: How are you able to provide water to the outboard for running dry? I am new to this boating game and have just purchased a '78 Johnson 25hp that I'd like to be able to dry run.
Great video..thanks....question there are 2 holes the the left of your inlet screens one above and one below the plate....my pump quit and I now have oil coming out of the top hole...I ordered a water pump kit that comes with everything in ng including new bolts for the pump housing...will this fix the oil coming out also...thanks for any help I can get out there
i have a 25 hp johnson similar year as the one in the video...and i replaced the waterpump with a new impeller and housing, however im not getting a very stong water pressure from the tell tale hose...more of a broken stream and seems weak . any suggestions ?
My 2000 johnson 35hp outboard pees water from the pee port but it’s not filling the power head with water.. not sure what that’s about.. took the thermostat out and fired it up and it’s dry.. no water in engine.. any ideas?
I just replaced a water pump on my 84 35. Couldn't figure out how to get the lower unit off until today. So I didn't replace everything like I wanted to
U should put loc tite not grease on water pump housing bolts..also put a dap of grease on shaft where u put keyway it will help hold it there. Usually the new bolts in the kit already have loctite on them. Use perfect seal for gasket mating surfaces, (not on top side of steel plate), make sure steel plate has stamped sharp side down! Use bellows ashesive on water pump housing seal. Make sure to grease splines on shaft w moly lube. Liquid dish soap works well to lube pump housing and pump as well... The end.
I changed the water pump and impeller and it still will not pump water. We have taken the foot off and checked to make sure everything is right, I’m lost now. Any help ?
Make sure the water circulation pipe, the one that goes into the water pump, should be copper, is engaged all the way to the top of the shaft housing. Sometimes that comes loose and people reassemble the lower unit and no water circulation. Take the lower unit off use a flash light and shine it up into the shaft housing and see where it connects up inside.
Is the impeller any different from a 10 hp motor and does it needs gaskets when you replace the impeller. my motor got really hot due to water pump not working, do you think anything else may be damaged?
Hello Eric, would you have any recommendation on a motor for a 16' bay liner? I've been told that a 90hp would be overkill !! What's your opinion on that?
Am I missing something? Which one is the water pump? All I hear about is the water pump housing an impeller. But not the water pump... I must not be following here, but did u change out the water pump?
Got a problem... the copper tubing came out with the drive shaft. After assembling everything no water is being pumped up to the proper outlet. The copper tube didn't detach at the pump, the entire copper tube came down.
Oh yea I fixed it. Used a flashlight to shine up the housing, found the hole and placed the pipe into it. Then put the bottom end on and could then easily get the other end of the copper tube into it's place. I first tried this in reverse and didn't assemble it correctly.
Bull love Bull yes I believe that u must put it in reverse I didn’t know this when I changed my impeller on my 15 hp and took hours to try and get it back on Can u send the link plz
Thanks for making the video 7 years ago. I know time has gone by but i was stuck and didn't realise there was a plastic gromit on the gear linkage.

Is it the shift lever that needs to be in neutral, or do I also have to put the prop in some kind of neutral position - if that is even a thing. ?
Nice video. I love the old man in the background smoking and drinking a bud light!

Easily the best tutorial for this motor I have ever seen sir!
thank you so much. i looked for videos on how to replace a water pump for my johnson 25hp but no video thought me how to remove the shift linkage.
Jonathan cPal
Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much for making this video. I really don't like taking my outboard to the shop, this helps alot.
Very good job you make it look so easy well done.
Thanks. I've done this before many many years ago. Time to do the 1955 25 hp Johnson.
Which direction does the bend of the rubber teeth on the impeller need to face. Clock wise or ?
Having a ton of trouble getting my lower back on. I can only get is as far as having about 3 inchea left to go. Everything is lined up. Is there a certai position the gear shifterneeds to be in to get the lower unit on?
Your video helped me out so much today. Thanks for posting it

Buy a set of "Ear muffs". You connect a hose and put it over the water inlet screen.
You are a good teacher. Thank you!

That little plastic piece on shift linkage is called a keeper. Johnson/Evinrude recommend replacing it.
I heard in another video that the keeper is $8 or $9. If it is still pliable and not torn, I may reuse it.

What happens if you can get the lower unit off due to the shaft linkage being bent?
Very good step by step instructions nice video

thanks that was a very nice video some noise but understand you where so close to the street !
I have disconnected the shaft and the bolt will NOT move up at all.
no new gaskets on the pump housing?

Is that Loctite on the bolts or anti seize?
Как отрегулировать мотор(у меня такой же),чтобы его не трясло?Мой, на холостом ходу, по тряхивает!
thank you so much Eric. Hope this will work for us
Thanks for the post... It been twenty years... And I forgot about the shift link
Looks like you installed the keeper in the shift shaft linkage upside down?
I changed the water pump and impeller and it still will not pump water. We have taken the foot off and checked to make sure everything is right, I’m lost now. Any help ?

Nice and straight forward,
Is the impeller any different from a 10 hp motor and does it needs gaskets when you replace the impeller. my motor got really hot due to water pump not working, do you think anything else may be damaged?
What do I do if water pick up line came out with pump and can't get back jn
Hello Eric, would you have any recommendation on a motor for a 16' bay liner? I've been told that a 90hp would be overkill !! What's your opinion on that?
Eric where can I get a shifter link for my 25hp Johnson? I need the part that pushes the neutral button when you are starting it up.
Helpful video. Thanks man 💪
Am I missing something? Which one is the water pump? All I hear about is the water pump housing an impeller. But not the water pump... I must not be following here, but did u change out the water pump?
Also what kinda grease should I use?
water pump = impeller
What kinda camera are you using, excellent quality video
Do you have any parts for a 98 25hp Johnson
my1999 model n/o bj25pleem 20 ins has no water pump tubing from pump to the head? & i cannot by part 0320785 for that moter
When you put the impellor in you really need to twist it at the same time. The way it is going to rotate when the engine is started
I would lose my mind and probably something important if I was using a yard with grass, leaves and dirt for a workbench.
What size wrenches are needed to drop the lower
I have a 91 Johnson 30. Do I use the same technique?
Is this a long shaft or short shaft
Great video!
thanks dude,great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Eric good information
Best vid yet fuck all others.
What would be the max carby hp size you could put on a sixhp
Learned a lot thank you
I have 2000 johnson 25 hp does it need to be in neutral before I start? What size are the wrenches?
I believe it was a 3/8 and a 1/2" kept mine in N the entire process
yes it wont start any other way

My little washer came out of that hole with the copper tubbing and won’t pump could it not of been seated right?
Thanks for the help.
Didnt work i undid all the bolts but the water pump didnt come off
I saw another vid ( 200 hp though) where they had the motor in reverse in order to work on the water pump replacement
Bull love Bull yes I believe that u must put it in reverse I didn’t know this when I changed my impeller on my 15 hp and took hours to try and get it back on
Can u send the link plz
Excellent video thanks
Grazie !
super merci
