  • 3 Reasons Chaeto Dies | How To Grow Chaetomorpha in a Sump
    Exclusive videos on my PATREON: / everydayaquarist
    In this video we take a look at the common mistakes people make when trying to grow chaetomorpha (chaeto) in their reef tank refugium or sump. Many people do not care for their chaeto properly and it dies or is dying in there sump, sometimes it just doesn't grow or turns white and dies.
    Chaeto is often added to a reef tank sump to reduce nitrates and phosphates but it needs more than just basic lighting to survive. Giving the chaeto decent lighting can make a huge difference in the speed at which it grows. Also adding fertilizer is essential for long term growth and vigor of your chaetomorpha. Although there is often enugh flow in the sump of a saltwater aquarium, if it is slow it may also be worth adding a powerhead.

    Hmmmm. Used an expensive grow lights on my fuge, then it broke and I got a much cheaper led flood light and I could not keep up from harvesting chaeto and dumping it in the garden. Chaeto does not know the amount of money you've spent on a light. Nutrients are way more important. People on forums have chaeto dying because they have a massive imbalance in new tanks or their light cycles are wrong.

    The best video ever on cheato! I am looking for an easy way to keep nutrients down and hate to say but inexpensive too since I need it for 3 tanks after nitrtaes have suddenly spiked to 28 and 25 after adding new fish and corals. I have thought of carbon dosing but skimmer isnt working well in one tank because I cant find out where the sump or tank is leaking but sump gets to low! Alo I like the fact that once I get set uo with a fuge it enexpensive to keep going and also I heard it ups ph! I am running gfo and am about 0.08 on po4. Should I remove gfo little by little? Also can I put cheato in sump if I odnt have a designated chamber? My sump is very small about 10 gallons(wide open no chambers) and even smaller in my aio and am going to need a hob one for my sumpless frag tank.. I hant really investigated other ways but I think a reactor of of some sort. No room for algae scrubber! What way would you recommend and mainly want to know about just putting in an open sump.

    I’m very interested in setting up a macro algae aquarium to raise Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis. I’ve never done a salt water tank before, but am pretty good at growing plants with CO2, fertilizers and lots of light. I’m glad I found your channel!

    I’m loving the idea of macro algae in the aquarium... I’ve just ordered some from eBay then saw this!
    Would love to get your info as you are UK based... I’m in S.E.Kent on the coast.
    I’m looking into how to introduce to the tank, quarantine or clean?

    If I have a lot of detritus in my refugium (or wherever) but my my phosphates and nitrates are near zero, why do I care about removing it? So many people see an ugly mess somewhere and they need to remove it, but I just don't really see the point if everything in the tank is going well- it's just a destabilization event

    • @EverydayAquarist
      @EverydayAquarist  2 роки тому

      The detritus forms an ecosystem in itself which helps system stability. Removing all dirt etc is a mistake

    Great video, I have been using chaeto on a new tank setup and it sucked up all the nitrate and starting to go white, I have since added miricle grow to my sump. Will the trace elements from this feed it or should I also dose chaeto grow? Advice welcomed. Keep up the videos!!

      Miracle grow, as in what you put on your tomatoes? I guess you need to see whats in it but Fertiliser is Fertiliser. Many of those ferts are just npk so may not provide trace elements as well but you will need to check the ingredients

    I think I added my macro algae too soon in my refugee gym on a new tank that was only up for like six weeks. It is not growing. Would anyone suggest I remove the chaeto, Waitights for levels to build up, and then add it again? chaeto is dying in the refuge and I have green hair algae in the main tank.

    Hi, I've heard of Tangs specifically being affected when dosing Seachems flourish iron. Do you have any yellow/scpas tangs in your systems that you dose the powdered iron to

    • @EverydayAquarist
      @EverydayAquarist  3 роки тому +1

      Hello no I don't because they eat the algae which is counter to what I want, however I do keep ctenocheatus tangs and they are perfectly healthy after 2 years. I didnt know zebra tangs were affected by iron, I will look into this.

    Really good video as I'm.struggling to keep my chaeto alive, tested my tank and I have nitrate at 12 and phosphate at 0.02. I have a kessil h80 light which is about 10" above the chaeto in my sump. I have the h80 light come.on from 8:30pm - 8:30am on the grow setting at 100%. I also have miricle mud in the same section of the sump. Am.i having the h80 light on long enough and as i have no corals currently just fish should i be feeding the chaeto anything else. Hope you can help me please as really struggling with what I'm doing wrong

      Could be micronutrients, try dosing an all in one plant Fertiliser, lack of iron could be the problem. Everything else sounds fine
