Never owned a fish finder in my life until now, just got a Hummingbird Helix 7 MEGA SI GPS G3N for my new 17’ bass boat and I must say this was a very helpful and intuitive vid, thank you and happy fishing!
Finally a solid no BS video on how to read a fish finder. When I was first starting I couldn't find a video like this. Great job as always TacticalBassin!
Every time I am looking for information about fishing I type my search in and no matter what you guys have a video on it. I know its gonna be good cause they are all good. No BS just good info. Appreciate you.
Your comment on buying expensive things and not knowing how to use them sums me up perfectly. Got a helix 7 chirp/di/si/GPS and have no idea what I'm doing. Videos like these help a TON. Thanks Tim, please more electronic videos soon
Well I haven’t looked at the comment section yet, but you answered a lot of questions I had. I’ve been to several major fishing schools and no one talks about sonar ... except for the offshore guys that say “look for that 6” rise on the bottom.” Then I feel stupid asking questions like I’m driving a Corvette and asking someone how do I put it in gear. Any rate - thank you for your time making this video.
Mate no there are NO stupid questions, only stupid answers!! We are all learning, even the very best, which i am not one of! But that wont stop me trying....
I have been fishing since 12 and at 51 finally got a boat and fishfinder. I didnt now much how use it and this has opened my eyes!!..Thank you so much and keep them lines droppin'!!
Thank you for this informative video. My son and I just got our first sonar unit and this is the first video I have seen that gives clear, concise definitions of what we are seeing on our basic 2D sonar.
That was awesome. I got one of those Deeper Pro things to keep track of all the ponds I fish and learning how to read the sonar is what they recommended. Nice work.
THANK YOU‼️ Although the video was from a year ago, it answered many questions I had about how to read my Solix 10 SI G2. Please continue to do more informative videos like this! I'm now a subscriber to your channel.
I just got a used boat that came with all the high end Garmin Stuff including Panoptix. Man I been fiddling and looking at screens and catching less fish. I can't wait to get past the learning curve so I can utilize this stuff. Thanks for the video's watching them all. You guys channel is amazing. Has taught me so much in a short time as a new angler!!!
That was great! You answered a lot of my questions, especially how wide the cone is. Reading sonar is a learned skill. I have found that reading it then catching fish has made a huge difference in my confidence. I hope this video has helped me break into that second level of understanding.
Great video Tim. This is exactly what I needed to learn. I am still new to running my sonar and I've never had an in depth look at this. These small pointers are key! Thank You
Make a video on how to fish based off what u see on the graph. Are the fish straight down, to the left of the boat , right of the boat. Where do u cast based off the reading on the graph
OnTopFishing as soon as you see a fish come across the fish finder he is directly under your transducer. I don’t use a fish finder for bass fishing but deep dropping in the Gulf of Mexico i can find a single fish in 1000’ of water and catch it. Best thing to do is learn all about your set up get out on the water and practice. I have now been able to distinguish the difference from snapper and grouper offshore. And you should be able to do the same for bass fishing. But I must say quality electronics make a world of difference in open water fishing. The transducer itself is just as important as good display.
With 2d sonar you can't really tell if the fish is to the left, right, in front, behind, etc. All the signal is telling you is that at some point the fish was inside the cone of your sonar. However, as he said if the fish shows up as a solid line then you know that it is right inside the cone. Depending on the water depth you're in your sonar cone may be pretty small though, so that narrows down the area the fish may be in. Using the 1/3 rule, if you're in 15 feet of water then that fish was within 5 feet of being directly underneath the boat. All of that said, even if you were able to locate exactly where the fish was they could have swam away already by the time you make the cast!
@@FishOClockSomewhere agree when I see the solid lines that's when the catching starts, mostly drop shot or just something that gets down there...even caught them on spinner baits in 25 foot of water. When I see arches I usually throw a spoon, crank bait or something top water (if they're busting shad especially)
please keep the sonar videos coming. I was so excited with the first one, and have been waiting for more. Thanks for all the info you guys share, it has helped out a novice fisherman alot.
Correctly reading electronics can be the single biggest game changer in catch more fish and learning more about the the way bait and bass move through out the year. The single biggest fish catching investment you can make. Thanks Tim.
Keep doing what your doing guys. Love the channel and the content. Most informative fishing channel on UA-cam. Nor afraid to say that something doesn't work and there are days when the fishing is tough and 10 lbs is a decent bag. Thanks for keeping it real and not selling out over the years. It comes from a love for fishing more than a love for money and that's hard to find now a days.
I would pay like $20 for an hour or two video of idling over different locations and describing what you are seeing. good spots/ best times a year for different spots/ different types of fish and moods, etc
Thanks for the video guys. Can’t wait for more of this series. I have a nice lowrance for my kayak but I find myself ignoring it kinda more often then not because I can’t tell what I’m seeing all the time.
I would love to see a series of videos with one of you fishing and the other narrating the video and going over the sonar and why you stopped there to fish. I think you guys do a really good job of breaking it down piece by piece and explaining it but I would like to see a video of everything put together you know like the whole thought process from the night before you go fishing to put the boat back on trailer and going home. It may take 10 videos to do but it would be the closest us the viewers would ever come to fishing with you. We have all of this awesome content to watch in pieces. I would like to see you both put it together and put your own advice to work in a series of videos like maybe a pov type video in the head Matt or Tim or you both!!! So glad to see both fishing again keep up the good work
I've been using electronics for a few years now and always wondered what the lines were, sometimes several of them going in every direction, thanks to your video, I now know I was sitting on top of fish and better stop the next time and get some lines in the water. Thanks for clarifying what we are seeing.
Thank you for starting with 2D sonar! My dad and I don't have a nice graph on his boat so it's nice to see some better tricks that we can do with his basic unit.
I used my electronics Saturday fished for 16 hours straight had a blast. One of the best days I’ve had actually marking structure and fish and catching some of them. It’s not as easy as it looks. There is a learn curve. I do notice a difference between and old helix 5 and my new helix 7 si G2. Gotta pick up another for front of the boat. Can’t wait for the other videos of DI and SI.
Great information. I'm extremly new to reading and interpretation of boating electronics, and this was as simplistic as it could get . Learned what a few of the images are, and whay to look for and also confirmed what I interpreted on the water. Thanks again for the time and effort put into these videos.
Great information so divide your depth by 3 and one of those parts will be the area the sonar is covering and that depth. Great information bro I learned something this morning.
Like this style of tutorial. First - Sonar 2D, then DI imaging, then SI, then combo 3 maybe 4 scree simultaneous. You could throw in fine tuning to adjust an compare images / and how that relates to fishing - prep and actual bait selection.
Another great vid. I guess the logical follow up would be you see some blips, now what do you do? Good to see you back out on the water again. It’s funny with all this technology my best fish finder was my Uncle Edwin. 😁 He could find them anywhere.
Your description on the cone size was top notch. Better than anyone I've seen on UA-cam. I even emailed Humminbird about the cone width and I don't think they gave me that good of a description. They only mentioned the 20° and 40° angle. Not a 3rd of the depth. That's awesome. What Humminbird are you using?
Thanks Tim. How about this. When you find them on the bottom or wherever you find them. Could you do a video on what you start with and your technique to getting those fish in the boat. I know angle is critical and the bait selection... Basically, breaking down the steps of when you find them on the graph and catching them. There are times I find em and can't figure out how to catch em.
Outstanding video! I just learned something, I always thought a full arch meant a fish was underneath you, but from the cone diagram shown its moving out of your cone. I would like to see more on how to tell the difference on shell beds, mud, hard and grass bottoms etc! Many thanks Tim!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I really learn a lot from you guys. Now, to show you how much of a newbie I am, I am trying to determine whether or not the transducer must be submerged under water or can it operate attached to the bottom of the sonar pod. I have the lowrance hook4 2x with a small plastic bullet scanner. I can't understand anything I am looking at. I asked in one of the kayak groups I am in, but got pretty much ridiculed, but still no definitive answer. Thanks again.

Great video thanks....New sonar users really enjoy. would be fantastic if possible if you could show the entry units too, I have hook 4 and striker and both are different than the really nice units like yours. learned alot thanks again. happy fishing. Ken
Awesome video again from your channel. I'm always wanting to learn more of what I'm looking at. Most times I can tell but there are other times that I find a big object and it's very hard to tell exactly what it is. I'm running Helix 12 DI/GPS/Chirp. I don't have it at the console though. That unit is connected to my 360 as well...
Gees thanks man I just started using my helix 5 and I had a very hard time staying positive with it used it for depth only lol now I can use it with faith
This is a stupid question but after you find the fish on sonar, how do you fish for it? Would you mark that spot on your map as a waypoint and then come back to it and fish it? Just curious. Just bought 2 old humminbird units (1 di/GPS and 1 si/gps) and just wondering how to use them effectively
If your lake is not crazy busy with lots of traffic just buy fish marker buoys then you go to a spot and scan for a while, when you find fish throw a buoy over and move on scanning, later after you marked a few spots come back and fish them. Save your waypoints to mark underwater structure like rocks, logs, brush piles and such so you can always hit the same spots in different days.
Definitely a great, informative video. I also still dont understand some things, most of my questions are being asked in recent comments. But it is a great vid
Whats always been confusing to me if perceiving a 3D image (like the transducer cone) onto the 2D image of the screen. Great video, looking forward to the rest of the series!
Tim, what do you mean come and gone? Do you mean they swam through the cone, or that they have vacated the area you are fishing. What I am trying to understand is should you stop and fish an area where you see fish that have come and gone or are those fish that are transient that were there when you passed over them and are gone as they were simply cruising through the area? Are you looking for the straight lines or the arches?? Also, when your back tranducer shows fish, how far behind the boat are those fish?? How far back to you have to go to reach those fish with lure you are throwing? Sorry to be dense, but as you say, understanding what your electronics are showing you is critical to using that equipment to catch fish.
I typically use waypoints to mark structure, not fish. What I was trying to figure out is where fished marked on the graph are, with relation to the boat. I know that what appears on the right hand side of your screen is right under the boat (the transducer), and I am trying to figure how far behind the boat that fish would be by the time you see it on the screen. Often we will see fish on the graph, but then struggle pinpointing their exact location if we turn around or stop the motor to fish them, ie distance from the boat, ie are they 20, 30 or 100 feet behind the boat. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
It depends on how fast you are moving the boat really, i scan in between 2-4 mph to use side image as well so when i find fish i just mark it with buoys. I never let the boat move too far forward before i throw a buoy. I think he is confused tho, i was told that an arch is fish standing still and a line is fish moving, which makes sense because when you retrieve your lure and you see it on the sonar it also shows as diagonal line from the bottom all the way up the boat.
The diameter of the cone on bottom is 1/3 the depth if you are using 200mhz or high chirp. If using 83mhz or low chirp, the diameter is equal to the depth.
Never owned a fish finder in my life until now, just got a Hummingbird Helix 7 MEGA SI GPS G3N for my new 17’ bass boat and I must say this was a very helpful and intuitive vid, thank you and happy fishing!

Finally, someone who is teaching, what to look for!!! Well done, and thank you! All the best from Australia! ps: liked and subscribed!
Great job explaining this. I’ve been trying to figure out how to read and understand my fishfinder for the last little while.

@@MLCAgaming thank you for the reply very helpful. I carry bouys but don't use them a ton. I'll try them more this fall.
you should do a video on sonar on the cheaper units like the lowrance hook2 series. also what speed are you are going
Excellent video!
Great video I understand a little more from each video
The diameter of the cone on bottom is 1/3 the depth if you are using 200mhz or high chirp. If using 83mhz or low chirp, the diameter is equal to the depth.
