Sonar Basics: How To Find Fish
Вставка

- Ever wonder what Fish look like on your sonar? In this video Tim takes you along with his Humminbird Solix and shows you what fish look like. He breaks down the basics of today's Sonar units including; Understanding your unit's transducer, how it works, and the "Cone Angle". All of these factors are important to painting a complete picture of what is below your boat.
Most default frequencies of today's transducers are 200kHz. At this frequency, the bottom area that the sonar is covering is approximately 1/3 of your overall depth. An easy number to remember is at 30ft deep, your sonar is scanning 10ft wide.
Here is the gear Tim is using...

Finally a solid no BS video on how to read a fish finder. When I was first starting I couldn't find a video like this. Great job as always TacticalBassin!
Your comment on buying expensive things and not knowing how to use them sums me up perfectly. Got a helix 7 chirp/di/si/GPS and have no idea what I'm doing. Videos like these help a TON. Thanks Tim, please more electronic videos soon
We will get you dialed in 👍
Never owned a fish finder in my life until now, just got a Hummingbird Helix 7 MEGA SI GPS G3N for my new 17’ bass boat and I must say this was a very helpful and intuitive vid, thank you and happy fishing!
Today's electronics are so good I can see the fish laughing at me
Al Paca kmfsl
Dude !!! You made me laugh so hard thank you!!
Lmao
😀
Ricardo Alvarez it’s not that funny
I've been using electronics for a few years now and always wondered what the lines were, sometimes several of them going in every direction, thanks to your video, I now know I was sitting on top of fish and better stop the next time and get some lines in the water. Thanks for clarifying what we are seeing.
Yes! I just purchased the Garmin striker 5dv and really needed some tips like these ! DI coming up next in a split screen with the sonar
Great information. I'm extremly new to reading and interpretation of boating electronics, and this was as simplistic as it could get . Learned what a few of the images are, and whay to look for and also confirmed what I interpreted on the water.
Thanks again for the time and effort put into these videos.
Thanks for the kind words Christopher!
Thank you guys you don’t understand this little bit if information change, the Way I look at my sonar. Thank you guys do more videos like this one.
Thanks Larry!
Yeah bro that helped out a lot Can’t wait for more videos like this one
Larry Doner I think we’re getting better I just hope we can learn how to find them deep using a contour lines
Thanks for this. I just bought my first fish finder. Get to test it out on Thursday. Can’t wait.
Well how did it go
Thanks mate. Finally someone who can explain it properly.
This was a very helpful video for me. I’m new to boat fishing this year and have been struggling trying to figure out my helix.
Wow this helped me so much thank you for posting this I just started using a fish finder and today was my second day out
That cone part is what no ever told me is all I needed
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this it was very helpful
Very good info! I would suggest to try shading the sonar's screen so the glare isn't so bad in the video.
Great comment on the cone and view at 30’. Hadn’t heard that before.
Dude....thanks....very good info, how to use the sonar....thanks again
Good video. THis is a series I will watch to the end.
Thanks Steve
Awesome video bud. Keep them coming.
Thanks for your help. Info was really good
rock star video... straight to the point.
Ok, here is what I was told by a Hummingbird rep when I attended the Bass Master Classic held outside of Tulsa Oklahoma. I asked about real time sonar. When you see something just coming onto the screen , is there a delay? His reply was yes. There is a delay because the processor has to interpret the signal and show it on the screen. This delay time is 12 seconds. He said if you turn your boat around and look at your watch and count off 12 seconds, you should be over what your screen just showed you. I then asked him why they don’t print this delay on the box? His reply was, if we did we would not sell very many ! This is what I was told. Just something else to think about. Oz !
Unfortunately you were given some really poor information. The reason I can say that with confidence is we do something called "video game fishing" where you see not only the fish but the lure on screen and when I pull my bait up, let it drop, set the hook, etc.... it shows on the screen in real time. There is absolutely processing time but it's fractions of a second, much faster than I can actually see.
Great video. Easy to understand and looking forward to putting it to work next time I go fishing
Nice and clear. Thanks.
Can y’all do a video about scroungar head and what are y’all opinions about the Powell and 6th sense rods ??
Well presented. Cheers
very informative tutorial sir
good tutorial, kept simple, nice stuff and greetings from sunny Scotland.
What’s up!Please show what you do once you find fish on points, rock piles, bushes so on and so on.How to attack it according to what you see on the graph.Be a great video
Please keep this up, def need help in this area. Fish a lot of new water and need help finding the fish
Tim great start... I fish the area where you filmed this.. but my HD7 never looks this clear. looking foward to seeing how you fine tune your electronics.
I caught a bluegill on a swimjig off that rock wall! Fooled me on how hard it hit that thing. Surprised the hook fit in its mouth.
Great video does this apply to the lower end units like the Lawrance hook 2?
Enjoyed the video even though I use a Lowrance on the front. Basics are the same. Again thanks and keep um coming.😎
Technology truly is changing the game of locating fish, you still have to get them to bite! However, graphs are no good if you can't maximize features and the ability to put the lure in front of the fish! Please expand on (1) casting based on the graph, (2) when you see fish on a ledge where are they positioned relative to the sonar, (3) etc. Lots of good comments below.
Awesome video. Thanks for the help.
I know this isn’t at all relevant to the topic of your video, but I was hoping you could provide a little guidance. I loved the video you posted about the rod lines you recommended for cheap, high end, and top of the line. I have chosen to purchase a few Shimano Expride casting rods. I was just wondering which rod length, and power you would recommend for 3/16-3/8 ounce shakey heads?
Whats the best way to set up mid range priced unites ? More or less hook them up make a few adjustments and have them read what your trolling over
Learned a lot. I appreciate the info.
What do you mean by the fish has 'come and gone' - gone where, behind the boat within casting distance?
I just got my first finder, thank you for the video, but after my Garmin Striker 4 shows me one, where do I cast? If it is a cone, that is a 360degree area. Thanks for the answer.
So when you see the balls or arches, what do you do if you see them while at the console? Or if you see them from the front unit? Obviously you've passed them. Do you turn around and fish in a straight line back at them?
Very nice man....thanks!!!!
Thank you
good video
Helped thank you
Hey Matt and Tim, I live in Minnesota on ultra-pressured city lakes from shore. Do you have any tips on fishing larger swimbaits, 5-7 inch so my rods can handle them?
This video was very helpfull for me!
Love the vid, i know im supposed to be looking for drop offs and humps and structure on my unit...however whenever I actually do there is never a single fish on it (maybe its because im in the barren wasteland that is New Jersey?) you should do a video on how you find structure that actually has fish on it maybe by reading the shore or the points or by doing whatever voodoo magic you do to find them lol
thelolipopkidz do you see fish on the unit regularly? If not then that could be an indication that your settings are off.
alexnelson09 yea the unit works fine i just only see like 10 fish total after being on the water for hours
Great information. Thank you for the video. Do you just go out scout sometimes or do you make passes and then fish then? Thank you -Scott
Dang man there was so much life down there! Put the pole away and just grab your dip net. Looked like you could just scoop out all the fish you wanted. 😂
Do you recommend using the "fish ID" feature on Humminbird units? It takes some of the guess work out of it.
You can at first to help learn what the unit thinks are fish, but when you really get into fish it really clutter up your screen.
So do I just drop my bait once I see the fish on the finder?
I mostly fish reservoirs in Northern California. Steep and rocky. Is side imaging the way to go??? Want to make a purchase, but there are so many options. I do like Humminbird... Anybody's input much appreciated!
I would like to learn where to set all the settings could you tell us please
Do more of these videos
Omg thx so much man
What 2D Transducer is that? Can anyone tell me?
What's going on with your guage on the dash Tim, that'd drive me nuts!!! 😂
Lol! It’s the speed portion that’s disconnected. I don’t use it anyway. Speed on the GPS is way more accurate.
When boat is stationary, what the scrolling screen show?
General specifics
I have a Humminbird Helix5, and mine marks fish icons? Is that just because it's a cheaper unit, or do I need to change the settings?
Turn your fish ID off in your menu settings
Thank you kind sir, I lost my user manual shortly after I bought the unit.
People say u Learn something every day but I say I learn a lot on Monday Wednesday and Friday mornings 😀😀👍👍
Awesome! Glad the videos are helping 👍
i dont get it...
@@gregriba6896 on those days he put videos.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Always wondered how to tell what was fish and what was structure laying on bottom...
Make a video on how to fish based off what u see on the graph. Are the fish straight down, to the left of the boat , right of the boat. Where do u cast based off the reading on the graph
OnTopFishing as soon as you see a fish come across the fish finder he is directly under your transducer. I don’t use a fish finder for bass fishing but deep dropping in the Gulf of Mexico i can find a single fish in 1000’ of water and catch it. Best thing to do is learn all about your set up get out on the water and practice. I have now been able to distinguish the difference from snapper and grouper offshore. And you should be able to do the same for bass fishing. But I must say quality electronics make a world of difference in open water fishing. The transducer itself is just as important as good display.
Hays Harmon thx for the input!
With 2d sonar you can't really tell if the fish is to the left, right, in front, behind, etc. All the signal is telling you is that at some point the fish was inside the cone of your sonar. However, as he said if the fish shows up as a solid line then you know that it is right inside the cone.
Depending on the water depth you're in your sonar cone may be pretty small though, so that narrows down the area the fish may be in. Using the 1/3 rule, if you're in 15 feet of water then that fish was within 5 feet of being directly underneath the boat.
All of that said, even if you were able to locate exactly where the fish was they could have swam away already by the time you make the cast!
U can see them on ur side imaging which side they are. Everything u see on the screen is behind you already, unless you have a 36o ducer
@@FishOClockSomewhere agree when I see the solid lines that's when the catching starts, mostly drop shot or just something that gets down there...even caught them on spinner baits in 25 foot of water. When I see arches I usually throw a spoon, crank bait or something top water (if they're busting shad especially)
So that big expensive thing just shows you squiggly arches and lines like a cartoon.. My little hummingbird actually shows me a picture of a fish and at what depth it is..
I would pay like $20 for an hour or two video of idling over different locations and describing what you are seeing. good spots/ best times a year for different spots/ different types of fish and moods, etc
Thank You for showing the unit screen clear and pointing at it and not just talking.
Thanks mate 👍👍👍
Thanks for an actual demo of the unit in action, not just demo mode as most other YT channels.
THANK YOU‼️ Although the video was from a year ago, it answered many questions I had about how to read my Solix 10 SI G2. Please continue to do more informative videos like this! I'm now a subscriber to your channel.
That was awesome. I got one of those Deeper Pro things to keep track of all the ponds I fish and learning how to read the sonar is what they recommended. Nice work.
That was great! You answered a lot of my questions, especially how wide the cone is. Reading sonar is a learned skill. I have found that reading it then catching fish has made a huge difference in my confidence. I hope this video has helped me break into that second level of understanding.
I have been fishing since 12 and at 51 finally got a boat and fishfinder. I didnt now much how use it and this has opened my eyes!!..Thank you so much and keep them lines droppin'!!
Well I haven’t looked at the comment section yet, but you answered a lot of questions I had.
I’ve been to several major fishing schools and no one talks about sonar ... except for the offshore guys that say “look for that 6” rise on the bottom.”
Then I feel stupid asking questions like I’m driving a Corvette and asking someone how do I put it in gear.
Any rate - thank you for your time making this video.
Mate no there are NO stupid questions, only stupid answers!! We are all learning, even the very best, which i am not one of! But that wont stop me trying....
Great stuff. Videos like yours show the reality of fishing. The real grind an angler goes through to get the catch. Keep up the good work and check out my channel & latest videos too, Thanks & Tight Lines, USCG Captain Scott Manning, US Army - Veteran
Dang good info and I like your statement that we buy expensive tools but don’t fully understanding they work.
Every time I am looking for information about fishing I type my search in and no matter what you guys have a video on it. I know its gonna be good cause they are all good. No BS just good info. Appreciate you.
This is a stupid question but after you find the fish on sonar, how do you fish for it? Would you mark that spot on your map as a waypoint and then come back to it and fish it? Just curious. Just bought 2 old humminbird units (1 di/GPS and 1 si/gps) and just wondering how to use them effectively
If your lake is not crazy busy with lots of traffic just buy fish marker buoys then you go to a spot and scan for a while, when you find fish throw a buoy over and move on scanning, later after you marked a few spots come back and fish them. Save your waypoints to mark underwater structure like rocks, logs, brush piles and such so you can always hit the same spots in different days.
@@MLCAgaming thanks for the tip!
@@MLCAgaming buoy won't float away from position?
@@theoamos4335 Not if it's a proper fishing buoy, it has a string attached to a weight which drops to the bottom.
@@MLCAgaming ok my bad
Great video Tim. This is exactly what I needed to learn. I am still new to running my sonar and I've never had an in depth look at this. These small pointers are key! Thank You
Great vid and great shots of my home lake! Thanks!
The intro/outro music score alone gets me to keep watching....so the awesome plethora of knowledge bestowed is unquestionably some of the Best!😉
Thank you for this informative video. My son and I just got our first sonar unit and this is the first video I have seen that gives clear, concise definitions of what we are seeing on our basic 2D sonar.
Your description on the cone size was top notch. Better than anyone I've seen on UA-cam. I even emailed Humminbird about the cone width and I don't think they gave me that good of a description. They only mentioned the 20° and 40° angle. Not a 3rd of the depth. That's awesome.
What Humminbird are you using?
Please do more of these in this same manner. I've always had a tough time trusting ....and understanding fish finders. Thanks!
Thanks Tim. How about this. When you find them on the bottom or wherever you find them. Could you do a video on what you start with and your technique to getting those fish in the boat. I know angle is critical and the bait selection... Basically, breaking down the steps of when you find them on the graph and catching them. There are times I find em and can't figure out how to catch em.
What's up guy's ?
Everyone says this.
The sky is up, it's our atmospher.
A guy is a device used to steady lifting equipment.
Cool is to describe temperature, as opposed to hot.
American's use the English language to communicate, but like to change things to suit their ego's.
@tacticalbassin Help me understand as I only have a garmin 73sv. Once I see the fish on my screen and I throw a buoy out, Do I sit my boat at the buoy and cast back? I can’t seem to find any fish that I’ve idle over at all. Do I fan cast? How do I distinguish how far back they are from idling over them?
Finally, someone who is teaching, what to look for!!! Well done, and thank you! All the best from Australia! ps: liked and subscribed!
How do you decipher between a carp and a bass on the screen? Btw I dont want to be wasting my time in a tournament by casting my lure out because a carp set off my fish finder alarm. I think i wasted money getting a cheap hummingbird piranha di max instead of just forking out 700 dollars to get side imaging chirp 7. Lol. Im sorry for my ranting. Im bipolar and my mind is thinking a million things at once. I cant turn it off unless im fishing and focused on catching bass
I have to ask why is it that all the UA-cam videos is it that every guy has 2 Solix's at the Console and the helm. Whats the reasoning behind it besides pro's that have sponsors and perks.
Does the average weekend warrior need more that one Solix 12 or even a larger screened Helix. I love my Solix and its going to take me 2 seasons to get to know even half of what it can do and I just got after Christmas a 360 that hasn't gotten wet yet.
If any of you using fish finders or sonar can please turn it on at the boat launch ! Lots of missing people drive into boat ramps and are submerged in only 8-15 ft of water . If you think you find a car in the water . Don’t hesitate to call 911 . Thanks
This definitely helps, but how do you tell rocks from fish? There’s no owners manual there’s nothing that I’ve been able to find that tells you how to interpret noise or rocks from fish? I understand fish are arches. What about those lumps on the bottom? Where are those not rocks? Why are they fish?
So where is the structure/fish in relation to your boat and your screen..what I mean is when stuff comes up on our screen from the right hand side....is that the back of the boat or front? I am sorry if that is a dumb question but i am trying to learn how to use my fish finder better. Mine is the Hummingbird Helix 4.
All of the arches are not fish. Unfortunately, trash, leaves. sticks and other debris look just like fish on these devices. So do turbulence from your motor. I live on a lake and can tell you that unless the culverts that are on the ends of so many coves are expelling billions of fish, these devices do a poor job of identifying fish. All they can tell you is the depth. Every time it rains, all of a sudden as the cove is mud brown, there are millions of arches that look just like fish.
Yeah but whats on screen is what's beside you? In front of you? Is what's center screen directly below you? Is it showing front to back of the boat or a circular cone? If it's a circular cone how do you know what's beside you or under you etc???
Great video thanks....New sonar users really enjoy. would be fantastic if possible if you could show the entry units too, I have hook 4 and striker and both are different than the really nice units like yours. learned alot thanks again. happy fishing. Ken
My biggest issue is not understanding why the sonar moves right to left and the cone. And where I am in relation to it , I understand the sonar reads what’s under me in a cone but if I’m moving does the right side represent my position and everything else what’s behind me ?
Ok. So if I just passed and seen it on sonar. Do I just kill engine and fish around casting where I just passed? I’m confused on how to pinpoint how I just seen on the sonar.
Great job explaining this. I’ve been trying to figure out how to read and understand my fishfinder for the last little while.
I really wish knew I where there are in relationship to your stern of the boat when in the cone. Like are they directly in front of you, at noon. Or could they be off to your right at 3oclock, or 90°
