    The diamond industry is pathetic - especially the marketing. "Every kiss begins with Kay" The implication is that my wife is a paid prostitute and that my promises have no meaning unless backed by money. It makes me want to throw up. I'll never buy a diamond in my entire life. If a woman demands one, then you are probably buying something. True love cannot be purchased.
    -Happily married with no stone for 40 years.

      ***** Yea, my parents just celebrated their 40th and my Dad had proposed with a Cigar Band :D She got a plain old gold ring for the wedding. I wanted a silver wedding ring (I'm freakishly pale so it looks better) but my husband was adamant he get me at least gold. We settled on white gold that has some silver in it.

      +Zoe TheCat It was one of the planet's biggest diamond mining company that started this thing where a woman must have a diamond for her engagement and wedding rings. Then the other diamond mining companies got on board.
      Before all of this, diamonds were not so popular. They were more for precision tools. Black diamonds which is one of the hardest natural stones possible, are used for drilling, cutting, and various industrial applications. Diamond dust is used in the process for making specialized abrasives and etc...

    • @ZoeTheCat
      @ZoeTheCat 8 років тому +3

      Jerry G. Absolutely. Diamonds aren't really all that rare. The industry is just playing a game with us - marketing. It also costs lives (Blood diamonds) and pretty much slave labor at the mines.

    A diamond can be fake, but the love has to be real...and you don't test for that with a magnifying glass.

    I love all these video's that talk about how you can "test a diamond if you're not a professional", but I'm sorry, if I'm not a professional, and don't work for a jewelry store, why the hell would I have a jewelers loop?????

  • @jerryg50

    In Canada, most states in the US, and most countries in the EU, diamonds and zircons by law must have registration as to what they are. For diamonds, or any type of stone and or jewelry, the buyer can ask for signed traceable certification. Proper certification must also include the rating specifications for what they have if and when applicable. The certification can also include the value at the time of purchase.
    To insure a diamond or any jewelry a signed and registered certification is required. The insurance company would require a copy.

      Pretty much. Chemically, there is no difference between diamonds and graphite. The only major difference between diamonds and graphite are the way the atoms are arranged.

    • @OriLOK2
      @OriLOK2 8 років тому +2

      +Tweezer Salad he means there all just pure carbon atoms. bread has things like hydrogen and some proteins in them that contain nitrogen. if you were to write down the chemical composition of graphite vs. diamond they'd be the same. just carbon. the difference is that diamonds have carbon atoms arranged so close together that they form a distinct crystal structure from graphite which makes them ridiculously strong.

    Do NOT recommend you start prying away at your ring to loosen the stone out of the mounting to check if it's real! You can do more bad than good to the stone and setting and having to explain that to your significant other and the jeweler that'll have to repair it....not so good

    If its out of the setting - go for visual optics. You can use this method for colored stones as well - it will tell you approximate refraction, chemical signatures in colored stones, cubic vs other systems and a host of other things, all with the naked eye, a pair of tweezers and a point source light.

      interesting...im struggling with my boyfriend. he wants to buy something expensive, I want a ring that cost $100. its an extremely beautiful solitaire, in a gorgeous silver (925) setting. the CZ LOOKS so real, I'm so in love with this ring. I already bought it.. don't know how I'm gonna break this to him. He thinks we're spending $13,000. Were not....I already bought the ring of my dreams....for $100. Trust me for that price ONE would think its the most hideous ugly CZ ever, SHOCKINGLY its so gorgeous...and shines just like the real thing in the sun. can't believe this. I want our money to go somewhere better than to a ring that I'll be scared to wear in public or loose. too much money ,not worth it. He doesn't understand my views on this.

    If you have to go through all this effort to see the difference between a fake and the real thing then what's the point? If it's so hard to tell the difference then you might as well save some money and get a fake. In my opinion diamonds are boring and overpriced.

    • @dominikfilipp1983
      @dominikfilipp1983 8 років тому +6

      +jhhwild Well, for me diamonds are beautiful and fascinating. On the other hand, your feeling about overpriced diamonds is perfectly correct. Diamonds are not as rare as many think; there is a plenty of rough uncut material in a London's warehouse belonging to DeBeers' monopoly business. 'Investment diamonds' is therefore a pure joke. More on this here
      www.gemsociety.org/article/are-diamonds-really-rare/

    • @jhhwild
      @jhhwild 8 років тому +4

      Dominik Filipp I think certain properties of diamonds are interesting, like their hardness and practical use. I just think that other gemstones are nicer to look at. I think I heard about that DeBeers thing. Also the whole "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" and diamond wedding ring tradition were meant to market and advertise diamonds to drive up demand, and it worked like a charm.

    Yeah, diamond really is not a rare substance. In fact diamond dealers have at some points agreed in unison to destroy stashed of diamond to make it more scarce and increase their profits.
    The only reason people are still crazy about diamonds is because of old cultural noms, i.e: you need one to propose for marriage. but in reality the only good and actual use for diamonds is in construction. Diamond is the hardest substance on earth (perhaps the universe) so it is very good at cutting stuff.

    • @Cyfix15

    OMG, LMAO! Videos like this make me ashamed of my own gender but I love the hilarious comments below! Diamonds are mostly about Glitter and Greed in general with the exception of heirlooms or a lucky find on a beach. Instead of wasting time and effort on "is it real?," women should study "Conflict Diamonds, I.e. blood diamonds,.war diamonds, etc." and go for the CZ. A tester is cheap and some distinguish between moissanite and diamonds. Amazing how something with no color, a huge price tag and often mined under tragic situations is so important to our materialistic society here in the US. Sadly, the Kimberley Process has done little to insure diamonds are exempt from the blood spill by evil cartels and DeBeers themself, especially in Rwanda and DOR Congo.

    • @jnopkmg
      @jnopkmg 9 років тому

      Actually European assholes have been exploiting Africa's natural resources for a hundreds of years, so I have no clue what you mean by indicating that diamonds that are heirlooms are ok? So people that buy diamonds in recent years are evil materialistic assholes who support the practices involved in mining blood diamonds? Or maybe people that buy diamonds now would like to create heirlooms to pass onto their children.

    • @luvjasmin
      @luvjasmin 9 років тому

      jnopkmg Not what I meant at all. A passed down heirloom is not sought after and purchased by the person or people who attain it. I had diamonds passed down to me from several generations back. My great grandmother would have been shocked at the process those diamonds were most likely mined but I know she had no clue. Education is key so that future generations know and understand the cruelty involved. I don't wear diamonds, heirloom or other. Same with the mink coat I inherited from my Aunt.

      a nice inclusion in the diamond will cause the stress of cutting glass to complete the fracture. think of it like how a tea glass is pretty solid , but a cracked tea glass breaks far easier. diamonds that are natural are microscopically cracked . cz and lab diamonds are free of the defects. so yes diamond can cut glass. but like the jewler here said , DONT DO IT

    Yep. That's exactly the same difference between standard sockets and impact sockets. Most people wrongly assume that the impact sockets are stronger because they are made not to shatter. But they are weaker metal.

    So... If you watched this video and have decided to go to these measures to check if it is real or fake, then maybe you have an issue. Unless the outcome doesn't change the way you feel about it and it's plain curiosity. In other words paying stupid amounts of money to get that ring she wanted is like saying 'will you marry me? By the way I'm in debt.' I asked my girlfriend of she liked CZ which she does so now I can get her dream ring for a price I can actually afford.

      Charles & Colvard lost their patent, so Moissanite is now very affordable. Much prettier, more durable stone than CZ too.

      Christopher Jenkins I know this is a bit late but get a 'WISH' APP & buy jewelry there. It cuts the middle man stuff out. Real stones & really good workmanship. Downside is it takes awhile to ship to you,,,,not like walking in & out of a store,,, but it IS worth it.

  • @TheCornerZoo
    @TheCornerZoo 12 років тому

    Easy way to tell, make a line on the stone with a felt tipped pen. On a diamond the line will be solid, on a CZ the ink will pool into tiny puddles.

    If its really this hard to tell if its a real diamond, why does it matter? You can get a ring that looks real and last for $50 from berricle jewelers. Why spend so much?

    cutting with diamond is different from striking it with a sudden force.. if you can put in the force to distort the lattice it will break instead of bend. It is hard, but brittle. Look at lets say gold, which is soft but malleable, if you strike it, it will bend... though of course if you apply force in a very particular place you can shear (or pierce) it... diamond however will do neither, it will chip or shatter. It is brittle. It does withstand a pretty good impact though

    I am former goldsmith an I've seen those things about half a million pieces. The real diamond's facets are perfectly straight because of hardness of the material. Fake diamond's facets are little bit curved. There are of course another differences, too, but there are difficult to describe.

    If you have to question whether your significant other purchased a real or fake diamond...perhaps you need to re-evaluate your partner.

    The ring thing is misunderstood. For many in different cultures men would get a dowry from the family of the daughter to insure that the marriage would have a certain value or wealth attached that would benefit the new husband, as well as his bride. So I know I've been told that ring is a symbol of the never ending love similar to an Infiniti symbol. My experience is that Americans say it's about love and for some that is true, I do think it is a combination of things like the rings value determine the seriousness of the arrangement. Or it's a status symbol, or I think is it is an asset that can be liquidated if necessary. I would pawn my ring if I knew it would help me and my family that doesn't mean I'm not fully engaged in the marriage or commitment.

Dude, that rock looks sick, she should be so happy! Man, you got yourself a gold digger up in your wallet, hiding in your closet checking rings, and man, I seen her with a real diamond eyepiece thing, you know? That tiny telescope looking thin. Man, she looking to rob a rich man. You best start running cause she hunting money. (lol)
