My personal favourite is the soto windmaster especially combined with thethermostack cook set, it's brilliant for solo hikes. 🙂

Soto Amicus is my Favorite, for under 40€ and never failed on me. I bought it in summer 2020 and love it ever since. This Sommer I travelt 5 weeks and used it every Single Day, 2-3 Times a day, it used just one 450g canister for the whole trip, it is perfect for my usage. Never had a Stove like this, would buy it again in a heart beat :)

I bought the amicus after I stepped on my pocket rocket. I love it, seems more wind resistant and is able to burn on low heat for simmering if I'm doing some actual cooking.

Soto Amicus comes out on top for me as well. And mine has also never failed me. One of my favorite details: it's the lightest upright stove you can get that has its own piezo igniter. Add that to its bomb-proof wind performance and I don't think I'll ever give mine up.

  • @thediscombobulationzonecov6972

Walmart now sells a 4 in 1 stove set, budget of course, that comes with a case, a isobutane stand, stove and most importantly, a propane adapter. For $12 it’s a awesome budget start stove for money conscious and first time purchasers. The adapter is aluminum vs steel but on the other hand the stove has a piezoelectric igniter.

My favorite is the Jetboil MightyMo. A little heavy than most at 3.3 oz. And a cost of $59.95 including a 3-legged stand that attaches the fuel canister for added stability. But the stove has an ignitor and regulator that provides better use in Winter and great simmer control.

Very good summation Dr. Ernie thank you. I have 3 of these stoves, the 2 MSRs and the Windmaster. I mostly use the Windmaster but sometimes the PR2 with a smaller pot because it has a narrow flame pattern.

There are so many options out there these days, we are big fans of the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 as well and have had no issues with it thus far. We usually still carry a little twig stove as a back up though, just in case.

Enjoyed your video. I have the PR2, Windmaster and Pocket Rocket Deluxe. The only issue I have with the PR2 is it is loud, at least mine is. My preferred stove for my uses is the original Pocket Rocket in the triangular hard case, I just love it and even bought a spare.

I've seen this exact comment of yours in another video. You must really love eggs! But that might be a bit tough to carry out since judging when an egg is "done" is a bit subjective vs boiling water.

Do you ever actually "Cook" something on any of these stoves? Fry an egg? Fry up some bacon? Cook some Bannocks????
    "Enquiring minds want to know!"
For me the boiling water bit is only 20 or 30% of what I need to do with my "Camping Stove"!
Lets try some bannocks next time!

Just pulled the trigger on a MSR Whisperlite Universal, it's my 2nd ever liquid fuel stove (first one is a Coleman Dual Sport, absolutely badass stove for a canoe/horseback style trip by the by) and I just realized my favorite stove guy hasn't done a top 5 liquid fuel stove list and it hurt my soul man, it cut real deep, but I know you'll rectify this in the fullness of time and I can stop eating antacids like pez candy lol

I would be interested to see a boil test with time and consumption on the first 2 stoves by regulating the flame so it doesn't run up the sides of the pot. My theory is that this is wasted energy.

I gave up on my Optimus Crux years ago. I had two problems: wouldn't stand straight, would start out burning strong but after a couple of minutes would peter out. So the stove I use the most is the SOTO Micro regulator stove.
But like many who watch your channel I have bins of stoves.

  • @stewitwooit9744
    @stewitwooit9744 Рік тому +3

Interesting video Ernie. All the stoves were running at full tilt, with much of the flame escaping up the side of the pan. It would be interesting to rerun the tests with the flame reduced down. Although the boil time will increase hopefully the gas used will be significantly less.

    • @LarryDickman1

I was wondering? You always do your boil tests with the stove ‘full-on’ with the flames ‘licking’ around the bottom of the pot and up the sides. Isn’t this inefficient? Have you tried turning the stove(s) down so the flame remains only on the base on not licking up the sides. I noticed on this video the Pocket Rocket stayed mostly on the base of the pot, with minimum licking up the sides. Be nice to hear your comments on this?

I think all these stoves including alcohol stoves get better boil times with a broader based pot. Now if they just soled a reactor heat sink ring like on the bottom of the Jetboils, you wouldn't get so much flame wasted up the side of the pot.

You kinda did the Crux a disservice by not showing that the case pulls over bottom and attaches to the top of the propane cannister and nestles the stove underneath it. Noboby wants to put it underneath unsecured and rattling around without the case that integrates with the cannister and potects the stove and your cookware.

It’s hard to imagine a boiling scenario that you haven’t tested, so I have an observation/question.
I was told a long time ago that for maximum efficiency, crank the stove all the way up, then back it off just a smidge until the flame lowers a tiny bit.
It might take a couple of seconds longer to boil, but the efficiency will be way better.
It appears that when you do boil tests, you always crank the stove to max. Do you think that the “back it off a bit” method gains any gas savings?
I could test it out myself, but if you’ve already done that it would save me the fuel...
    Thanks Ernie!!!
