- When it comes to backpacking stoves, we’ve all heard of JetBoil and Pocket Rocket, but you can easily drop $50 or even $100 on one of those backpacking stove systems. I’ve been using these sub $20 backpacking stoves for a while now and they have been fantastic! Two of them are from Amazon and one is available at Walmart (only $13!). In this video I’ll give you an in depth review and details of all three of these stoves, and tell you which one is my favorite!

I heard this other youtuber talking about how the whole buy the most expensive lightest item year after year approach to backpacking is peddled by the outdoor industry to make money. It works, people spend way more then is necessary but the affordable stuff works just fine. 👍
@@averagejoes9218 ya, that wouldn't surprise me. I think there is a small group of backpackers out there that really benefit from having the smallest/lightest/newest piece of gear, but to me that's the 0.1%. I prefer to spend less and somehow am able to enjoy the back country just fine. 😆

My BRS has served me well on back packing and kayak trips. To prevent burning my fingers, I take a 5" fat-pencil size piece of dowel in which I cut a 1/4" deep groove across the end so I can reach the stove adjustment wire. The dowel fits neatly in my Stanley pot (with locking lid) along with the gas, stove, and lighters (2 in case one fails.
Thanks, Don! That's a cool hack! I wonder if I could use the same dowel to push out the handles on my pot when I forget to do it before boiling the water (done that more than a few times... 😂).
Also, Kayaking trips sound awesome. That's definitely something I would like to try!

Why not carefully file that groove into a ferro rod (save the filings in fire kit ofc) and give it a dual purpose?

I bought the AOTU stove, works fine in Ohio. Took it to Wyoming on a backpack trip with my kids and it would not light at altitude (around 9,000). We had brought a backup stove it's an old GAZ stove that takes a special canister (I think it's European). It worked great. Ended up stopping in Jackson and pickup up a $50 stove, Jetboil Mighty Mo, so now I have 3 stove as you can never have enough stoves. Now I can do my own tests!!!
Hey Steve! "you can never have enough stoves" is a statement I can absolutely agree with! 🤣🤣 Testing them is actually pretty fun! Would be interesting to see which one boils faster and is more efficient!
I've used both the AOTU and the BRS in Utah at over 10,000 feet, but there are so many different factors (and maybe AOTU just doesn't have consistent quality control...).
I would eventually like to get a more expensive stove just so I can compare it head-to-head with these ones. But we'll see!

I think the BRS is the one for me as the pot stand on both really does make a difference if you are “cooking”.
Just watching the video a little behind the release. The Walmart advantage is that it comes with a stand for the isobutane cartridge and a cheap adapter to use the 1 pound propane tanks. All of that in one kit for $12 is a great value when it comes down to it as a budget stove.

Thanks, Allen! Ya, I'm always surprised just how fast it will boil water. Started with 40 degree water out of the fridge and it boiled it in 1:30! With that performance I just can't be convinced to pay more for a stove!

Whoa major background change! Fun! I've been using a BRS3000 for about two years, just upgraded to a Soto Windmaster.

Great video. I've had both of your stoves. I still keep a BRS when I'm just boiling. If I go luxury and bring my jet boil fry pan (usually winter trips) I use my pocket rocket deluxe(?).
Thanks, Garry! I think this approach makes sense. Use the BRS for boiling, but if you want to actually cook food or simmer something, may need something different. I've been thinking about trying some real cooking on trail, so may give in a get a more expensive stove some day. Thanks again!
Been using the BRS for a while, both hiking and for picnics in parks. Great little water boiler! I pair it with a 500ml pot.
Love my BRS! I should size down my pot from a 750ml. Just takes up unnecessary room in my pack.
Great video! I've had a cheap amazon stove almost identical to the AOTU for the past 4 years and it's never let me down. I would agree the legs are the most stable thing but it's been a good stove otherwise.
Hey Tim! Glad to hear it! Yes, even after the AOTU became a little less stable, I was still using it because it still worked great! Just can't justify spending 4-5 times as much when the cheap ones work just fine!

Great video. I have to put my stove under the fuel canister. The little bit of difference from the concave bottom allows for my lighter and stove to fit better in my Toaks pot. I take my MSR Pocket Rocket camping normally but we also have the same BRS from Amazon that you have. Ironically, they both work about the same despite the big price difference. And our cheap stove has been accidentally thrown onto the ground a few times in the past few years and it takes a beating. I was shocked that it never broke.
Nice tip about putting things under the fuel canister! I'm definitely going to try that! Ya, the BSR can definitely take a beating!

The Ozark Trail has the added benefit of coming with a canister stand and a pretty rugged carry case. Although I think, like you, I'd carry it inside the pot with the fuel. For the price I didn't hesitate to toss one in my cart the moment I discovered it a few months back when browsing the camping isle. Also subscribed

Love my BRS, it's worked for me every time plus the "3-spoke" pot holder design is inherently more stable than a "4-spoke" design ever will be.
SO MUCH GEAR! Love the black light effect my friend. The BRS is my go to and have used it for years. My only complaint is that it seems to eat the fuel and in the wind, well, let's just say you better have a wind cover or you will be waiting for a while for the water to boil.

Great video! It's interesting how different companies can license the exact same design amd just slap a different logo on it 😆 I just recently bought Gas One stove from Amazon that is basically the exact same as the BRS but comes with a hard case that still fits great in my 750ml pot.

@@DoseofDirt The hard case is definitely really nice since it's tiny and kinda fragile. Give me some peace of mind and doesn't scratch my pot. Plus I like that Gas One is a more widely known company and has a decent warranty so I trust it a bit more if I end up having a problem.

I have a few of the teeny burners, a ohuhu gasifying wood burner and an odoland 3500 as my 'luxury' stove, the wood stove will also take liquid alcohol and solid fuel tabs so plenty of options whenever real fire isn't an option,

Thank you! the wood stove that can also use alcohol and tabs sounds like a great idea. That way if you're camping in an area where you will have plenty of wood you can use that as fuel, but if not just grab some Heet or fuel tabs and you're good to go! I'll have to try one of those! One thing I forgot to mention, I like that it comes with the canister stabilizers as well as that converter. For $13 you get a lot more than the AOTU from Amazon (which I think is the exact same stove).
I think you'll enjoy it! For $13 it definitely punches above it's weight!

Some great budget options here Jeff! The BRS is the tried and true and thru hiker powerhouse. The total fuel consumption isn't bad either. I believe the pricier stoves will do better on overall fuel consumption but will end up costing initially close to 3-4x the price.

I have a Reehut stove similar to the orange AOTU stove. Amazon buy for $10. No complaints with it's function other than a windscreen is a must to improve performance. As long as the water boils within a few minutes I'm happy, I'm usually not in a rush while camping/backpacking. I've been enjoying a DIY alcohol stove on most of my outings the last season and look forward to using it more this season. The alcohol stove and fuel packs much better than the canister stove.

Its do have click systeem to connect so it only works on campinggaz bottle systeem.

I bought the cheap one and then the brs. IMO The cheap one (AOTU) was a bit temperamental and harder to control and not as good quality as the brs 3000T (Hornet).

Hey! Glad I'm not the only one buying both! 😂 I agree with you on the AOTU assessment. The BRS is a simpler (and smaller!) design where less can go wrong. That's my go-to now!

Good news: Walmart has finally listed the Ozark Trail 4 in 1 backpacking stove set on their website. I will still have to order it online as it is still not available in-store in any of the locations in my AO.
Price is still $12.97 USD.
NICE! Way to keep at it and finally find it in stock! $13 really is ridiculously cheap for a stove that works this well, especially since you get he converter as well!

It's honestly my favorite hat and I have searched the internet trying to find the company that made it. How long does one of those gas canisters last - roughly?
Hey James! The BRS is definitely the one I would use for fastpacking (if you want a hot meal or hot drinks). It's super small and light. The canister will last me 12-20 uses of boiling water. It depends on the time of year, elevation, etc., but can always get more than 10 uses out of one canister.

You can bend the arms a little to level the wonky stoves.
Consumer tip I compare stuff off of Amazon price wise with Walmart shoot from the hip on the percentage but I’m going to say 35% of the time I can find it cheaper somewhere else than Amazon and usually at Walmart. Even my professional manuals I have found much cheaper at Walmart. Every Penny counts… Thanks Brandon!
If you flip the iso fuel can upside down you get a little more room
I have had the AOTU for over a year now and had to disassemble and repair it out in the backcountry multiple times. I ended up just buying a new stove MSR PocketRocket for $35.

Hey! Ya, I think I'm liking the gear cave vibe. Plus my classy folding table! 😂 Ya, the regulator is definitely an advantage (as we could see with the almost empty canister where the boil time was almost twice as long). What's your go-to stove?
@@DoseofDirt I use a JetBoil…but with that I also avoid knocking the pot over which I’m prone to and when I compare the weight with a pocket rocket + GSI pot it ends up being the same amazingly
In case you don't already know, boiling your water on the low setting uses a lot less fuel, even though it takes a bit longer.

I tried an esbit stove ones, but it's been a while and I haven't done any really testing. It would be fun to compare one of those esbit stoves and/or an alcohol stove to the BRS. Maybe I"ll see if I can do that in the future! Thank you!
I have 2L MSR pot. What's your thoughts on getting the BRS to hold it? I would imagine it would probably be best for boiling water and not cooking on it? Thanks!
I've never tried something that big on any of these pots! I think theoretically it should be as stable as the other two I tested in this video. There are some stoves with larger supports. Ya, the BRS doesn't seem to do great simmering. I only use it for boiling water.
Do you think taking two of those little stoves would be a good idea?
How many BTUs does each put out? Can you cook a steak on a cast iron pan on one of thes stoves?
Have the "engineers" of those stoves with 4 arms not used a chair on uneven surfaces? Use 3 with a bigger spread.
Look at the gasifier stoves that burn sticks. About $20. Free fuel.

Link to Ozark Trail (Walmart) stove results in a "Item cannot be found" page. A futher search on Walmart's site for "Ozark Trail Stove" or "Ozark Trail Backpacking Stove" yielded no results. Was hoping I could see if the local Supercenter had any in stock before having to go there.
Dang! I'm going to try to get a better link. I had a hard time finding it through the website as well. But if you just google 'ozark trail backpacking stove' it comes up as the first or second result. Maybe give that a shot and let me know if it works?

I tried opening an 'incognito tab' and using the link and it didn't work just like you said. But then I changed the location to 'Dulles Supercenter' (zip code 20105) and it came up. Maybe try changing the location to be the Dulles Supercenter and see if it shows up?
@@DoseofDirt The local Supercenter doesn't have them but they cut the camping inventory way back years ago. The next nearest Supercenter is in Manning, SC and while they typically have a very large inventory of camping stuff (being near lake Marion) the store was damaged by a tornado two days ago and is closed. We'll keep looking. That stove kit appears to include a propane canister adapter (good).
@@TheRealPontificator Yes! The propane canister adapter is a great addition to the Ozark Trail stove! I wonder if you can buy it through Dulles Supercenter store but it will ship to you. Annoying that it isn't just available online!!
Bought the aotu stove n it didn’t start on 2 different trips n didn’t come w another o ring.
Dang! Hopefully you can contact the company about it, but that doesn't help it work on the trips you've already taken! I personally haven't ever had issues with it, but the BRS seems simpler and thus more reliable which is probably another reason that's my go-to since I bought it! I'll take one of the others if I need to be boiling a lot of water (like when I take my 3 kids on a backpacking trip) but otherwise it's the BRS for me!
Store the gas can UPSIDE DOWN in the pot. The can’s rounded out bottom will give you more space on top 👍🏽
you overpaid by about $5 for the BRS
Ya, the price seems to fluctuate. I just looked up my old order and it looks like I paid $16.95, so caught it a bit on the high end. But for $17, I couldn't be happier!
You've spent $50+, or just picked what backpackers drop when they run away screaming.
Is that music in the background? If so it is extremely annoying, many folks have hearing difficulties, and now they must content to the background noise as well, frustrating. It is beyond me why UA-cam content creators think it is cool playing music over their voice.
I honestly appreciate this feedback. The next video will have no music in the background.
