The major advantage of the BRS (other than price/weight) is that I can fit it, a 100g canister, soap and a scrubbie in my Toaks 550 pot with the lid on. It’s the whole kitchen setup in one 550 pot. Compact and convenient. Since based on the tests they use the exact same amount of fuel, the only price to pay for that compact and convenient (and lighter) setup is how long it takes for me to boil water. Generally speaking, I’m never in a camping situation where 15 seconds matters to me (I rarely boil more than 8oz at a time). Usually if I’m camping, I’m more interested in taking my time and soaking in nature.
Suggestion on your boil times, put a thermometer in the pot connected to your phone. When the water reaches boil you the exact time. Also, you could immediately turn off the gas obtaining a much more accurate weight.
I live in Northern California and hike in the mountains, foothills and coastal areas. It can get windy there so I settled on the MSR Windburner as my go to stove. Yes it is expensive and heavy but it works in the wind so I’m willing to put up with the cons. I have used it in steady 25 mph wind with gusts even higher. No issues, try that with the BRS.
I bought my BRS years ago before it got famous on UA-cam and it's still going strong. The quality of the MSR is better but not over double the price better. If my BRS ever breaks I'd buy another, and still would have spent less than the pocket rocket. Worth the couple extra minutes for dinner and coffee. Plus it fits in my 550ml cup with a canister, lighter and windscreen. Great video by the way. I always like to check out what you and TOGR have to say about gear. Safe travels.
I use a homemade chimney/windscreen with my 3000T, use the stove at minimum. My chimney independently supports the stove. Boil times are somewhere around 5 minutes for 900 mL cool water. Last trip, I did 2x400 and 2x900 mL boils at 1.25 oz fuel. Good enough for me...
I know it isnt top notch gear but I have had over 700 meals/Coffee on a Coleman Peak One over a 5 year period and zero issues. It is small and light enough for me.
I personally think it replaces other stoves. I have been using the brs for over three years now and it is solid. It can be blown out in high wind but so can my pocket rocket. I regret spending money on the pocket rocket lol
Haven't used BRS extensively yet, but MSR was pain for me as it got that screw unscrewing all the time making it flimsy and unstable (even had a case when the pot felt and poured out). Sure thing, I always wanted to fix it with blue retainer, but always forgot to do this and only remembered the problem when I was out again :)
It turns out all the burners are most efficient at a low to mid setting. As the stove flame blows out past the cup base if you max the burner fuel flow. It may take a bit longer but if you care about conserving fuel then maxing out the burner is not a good idea.
I'm not concerned about boil time, but what I notice about the BRS compared to my other stoves is that the support arms are flimsy and often bend to make the pot sit awkwardly on the stove. It is also a smaller support structure. I've lost more than one pot of water to it tipping over in the wind. Can't beat the price and weight, though, if that matters to you.
I really need to create a back packing camping cooking kit that includes a burner like that. Great video. BTW, this year the fall foliage in western Pennsylvania is awesome. The tree colors are on fire. They are so ridiculously bright, glowing, rich, full and beautiful. A color cornucopia.

I just got the tutanium BRS 3000T. They call it the Hornet! Weights under an ounce…crazy small! Amazing stuff. The increased fuel consumption & boil time is worth the tiny size and crazy low weight! They claim 1940W power……. …..Boil 1L water 2 minutes 58 seconds.
I use a oilicamp titanium stove, it is small and works great, fits in my titanium mug with coffee packets. They make one with a larger burner, the Olicamp Kinetic Ultra Titanium Stove. Also, I could outfit two backpackers for less cost than one MSR.
Here is the question no one ever does a test for. If I use this for hunting, which one is louder. I don’t care about an extra minute of boil time if the is a noticeable difference in sound. I would love a test for cook systems that includes sound. Love the videos, keep up the great work.
Honestly, if I'm outdoors and cooking, that means I'm on vacation. Therefore, time has no meaning. My BRS does just fine, faster than my penny stove.😂 tin foil weighs nothing an makes a right fine windscreen.
I have a question that has been bothering me for a long time and I can't find the answer. On the one hand, I keep reading/hearing that the cartridge should not be exposed to high temperatures. On the other hand, the burner (especially the one screwed onto the cartridge) heats up to very high temperatures and is in direct contact with the cartridge. The problem especially concerns small burners from China, such as the BSR3000. I always have concerns and fear in the back of my mind. Please explain.
I own the BRS, the original MSR Pocket Rocket and the MSR Pocket Rocket 2. All three stoves have seen extended use when backpacking and I have found them all to be reliable. Purchased the BRS 3000T because it was cheap and it was what my budget could afford. Over the years as I have added other gear I purchased the MSR Pocket Rocket and the Pocket Rocket 2. My experience with the stoves is similar to your testing. I typically go with the Pocket Rocket 2 when solo backpacking and include the BRS when camping with my kids. The original Pocket Rocket is in my car camping kit as a backup to our Eureka Ignite camping stove. If you are new to backpacking and have a limited budget I would recommend going with the BRS. There is not much difference in the amount of fuel burn and waiting a bit longer for your water boil is not that big a deal to me (My opinion). I agree with some of the other comments that when nesting your cook kit the BRS allows for a more compact and lightweight kit with a Toaks 500ml pot and I have to use a Toaks 750ml pot with the MSR Pocket Rocket 2.
I have many stoves, and a couple of months ago, I bought a BRS, just to try it. I used an MSR fuel canister that had been used a couple of times. The BRS worked fine, but when I unscrewed the stove, the fuel canister did NOT reseal itself. Did the BRS cause this? I don't know, but in all may years of hiking, I have never had a canister not reseal

The BRS is shorter than the pocket rocket so building a wind shield would be easier. I have a jet boil zip that comes in at 530g. Going light i might as well go with the BRS. By the time I've paired it with a pot and canister its about 335g. With a PR that would be 375g which doesn't save much off a jet boil that is definitely not ultralight but definitely more efficient and wind proof. Whatever i do i can't get more than a 200g (7oz) benefit from taking my clunky jet boil. If i had to do a longer trip the efficiency of the jet boil might save the need to take another canister..Just thinking aloud here ... Oh the joys of decision paralysis!
The MSR Micro Rocket stove that I bought on Amazon back in 2016 (and that I only use occasionally) is one I don’t see many comparisons with or even hear much talk about.
BRS can actually simmer extremely well once you use it a few times and get the feel of it .but for me all the canister top stoves are a bitch to saute and make elaborate meals with. The burner detached w. a hose stoves are best for stable pot support. BRS is the sh* Its a winner
Why waste pack space with a gas stove? I just use the esbit folding stove. Sure it means having to pick up wood and stuff but it takes up so much less space. Even if you carry the fuel cubes, it still takes less pack space. Gives me more space to carry bigger tools or maybe an extra bit of food
Carried my pocket rocket 2 and toaks 700ml wide (wider pot has more surface area improved performance). Amazing performance and much better efficiency than the brs. Most people use the brs for weight saving but I think there are other areas you can cut weight instead.
Uneven flame, not great in wind, and the pot supports eventually get bent and loose. Generally use my Pocket Rocket 1 not this, although I have both. Ok for backup. Agree with flimsiness of BRS.
Great review, man. The BRS being a gas guzzler negates its lighter weight and that it's flimsy makes me think I'd "buy once, cry once" and spend the extra for the MSR.
There is a great windscreen made by another company...cant remember the name. Ocelot? Anyways it adds cost but makes it way more fuel efficient. It now rivals my jetboil for a fraction of the cost.
Great Demo...I have the original Pocket Rocket, The Pocket Rocket 2, Soto 'Windmaster', and a cheap Coleman. The reliable original Pocket Rocket has served me for many, many years and is my go-to one. However, I recently bought the Soto and haven't had a chance to try it out. I too live in Colorado. As for the BRS shown here, I think I have enough stoves and probably won't get one. But thanks for the demo.
Like you I have both stoves and I have a love hate relationship with the BRS, I find it unreliable in the wind and it uses approx 1 gram more fuel per boil. I boil my water for the meal and coffee separately. Also the durability of the BRS concerns me ( Parts of Australia are very remote and things need to be reliable).
The BRS price is hard to beat, particularly given it is made of titanium, is light and small. The MSR is a well-proven tank of a stove. That being said, the $33 savings on the MSR would buy a lot of gas. Not trying to nitpick or troll the method but I would think you should use a pencil and mark the floor exactly where the tank sat in reference to the fan, not in distance but where in the wind stream it sits. For instance, one sitting dead center of the fan hub will not get the same velocity or pattern as one sitting further out from the hub. One sitting a little to the left or right could make a significant difference. I would also ensure the orientation of the stove pot supports is the same as they provide an obstacle to the wind. I know you are looking for results that mimic in-field conditions as far as boil times go but I would also do the test with the top off....watching for steam with the lid on is a bit subjective. Yeah, maybe it is nitpicking but all things must be as equal as possible to get accurate results. More likely than not, the results would be similar....but who knows?
Sure not an exact science, but I was measuring for the center of the fan to the burner and I alway use a lid when backpacking so I would say if I was off it it only be by 10-15 specs since the pot shark’s right be for steam.

Pot shape paired with burner shape plays a big part in boil time and efficiency. Wider pots are generally better, less flame over spill, there are diminishing returns though. The Brs is fine for making coffee and instant meals on the go. For real cooking a bigger stove is better. When I go bike touring and intend to cook real meals you can't pass up the multi fuel stoves from msr you can get fuel at any gas station. If I plan on "surviving" on supermarket foods during my trip the brs only has coffee duty and maybe an instant meal and for its price its good enough.
worrying about boil time and trying to make it a big deal is ridiculous. If it take you under 5 mins to boil water for a coffee, it's fine, yer outside taking in the scenery anyway....it makes zero difference. And if you think it does matter, yer missing the point of being outside. "I did bla bla bla trail in bla bla bla time" why even be outside if you're not taking the time to take it in?

These types of stoves are geared more towards Rock Climbers in my opinion. When you're literally camping on the face of a mountain & can't start a "normal" fire. Or if you're doing some high alpine camping.

Good idea, questionable test application. 1. Guessing the boiling point by looking for steam from a covered lid is highly subjective and susceptible to easy manipulation . Doing a side by side boil test without the lid would reduce vagueness. 2. Using different gas canisters for each stove also makes the comparison irrelevant. It's like saying tangerine and grapefruits are both citrus fruits and they ought to taste the same. I'm sorry Aaron, I liked many of your other gear tests but this video and your title makes it smells too much like clickbait.

I don’t have a decibel gun, but they are both freaking loud. They sound like they’re a jet engine if you’re within about 20 feet.
If you want to go stealth for hunting, I would go with an alcohol stove.

Soto Windmaster here is 1.5x the Pocket Rocket 2 and 6x the BRS, and a heap heavier and bigger.

When I go bike touring and intend to cook real meals you can't pass up the multi fuel stoves from msr you can get fuel at any gas station.
If I plan on "surviving" on supermarket foods during my trip the brs only has coffee duty and maybe an instant meal and for its price its good enough.

worrying about boil time and trying to make it a big deal is ridiculous. If it take you under 5 mins to boil water for a coffee, it's fine, yer outside taking in the scenery anyway....it makes zero difference. And if you think it does matter, yer missing the point of being outside. "I did bla bla bla trail in bla bla bla time" why even be outside if you're not taking the time to take it in?

These types of stoves are geared more towards Rock Climbers in my opinion. When you're literally camping on the face of a mountain & can't start a "normal" fire. Or if you're doing some high alpine camping.

I like these reviews of these little gadgets but I m thinking Most of them are just gimmicks. Made in China is a big NO NO I got a pair of running shoes that fell apart within a week 🤬

1. Guessing the boiling point by looking for steam from a covered lid is highly subjective and susceptible to easy manipulation . Doing a side by side boil test without the lid would reduce vagueness.
2. Using different gas canisters for each stove also makes the comparison irrelevant. It's like saying tangerine and grapefruits are both citrus fruits and they ought to taste the same.
I'm sorry Aaron, I liked many of your other gear tests but this video and your title makes it smells too much like clickbait.

I call BS on the durability. They hold up fine. I can buy a BRS for maybe $12. 100% of the reason you buy a BRS, is that it costs you a 10th of what the Pocket rocket does. Not even mentioning the price shows heavy bias.
