    Those later Vauxhall engines used to show 'mayo' if they've been doing short journeys or little use. Maybe worth trying an engine flush then new oil & filter. Also sounds like the chain tensioner may be starting to go
    Bargain for £150 though 👌

    You need to pressure test it, it's the best way to test a head gasket. If the gaskets gone between two cylinders and not near the water jacket exhaust won't make it's way into the expansion bottle, so the gas test won't show yellow

    Hi mate, top tip I've rebuilt a few of these engines, as soon as you can get the sump pan off and check the oil pick up tube, they tend to clog up with debris and the top end gets starved of oil and knackers the head assembly. They're not bad engines really and they're pretty tough, if looked after.

      We see a lot of these in our workshop and I have to say they’re poor engines tbh, rattly, underpowered and prone to a host of issues.. timing chains, hydraulic lifters, snapping camshafts, head gaskets, cracked blocks, top end rebuilds. Even with proper servicing.

  • @lukegrimer9281

    Your mad scientist head tester isn't worth the plastic it's made from. Get a decent one with a bulb on the end so you can squeeze it and get the air/gasses through the fluid and that will be more accurate. Also check the dipstick to see if you can see water on the stick also check with the engine running the dip stick tube and filler cap for any blow by. The cams looked good as if their was water in the engine it normally gums up pretty good. And see if you can see any oil in the coolent drain decent emount leave it to sit for a few hours and it will separate. Nice Easy engines to work on you'll have no trouble at all going a timing chain and head gasket on the drive at home and just get the head skimmed if required so don't worry. Looking forward to more content and happy new year pal 👍

    Ive got one of these Astras as a daily, with the exact same engine, woeful engines tbh, rattly, underpowered. Ignore the mayo in the cap its very common in these with short journeys or if they’ve been sat for a while. That rattling could be the timing chain which is soo common on these engines, about £400-£600 at a garage or about £60 for the kit if you do it yourself. Great video btw!

    I’d personally try my luck with a good service, fresh oil, fresh coolant and flush, fresh plugs and coil packs she’s definitely misfiring, take it from there. Monitor for oil/coolant mix. Probably worth running a compression test across cylinders too 👍🏼

    My guess is it’s running lean because of the o2 sensor. That sounds like lean pop on the engine. I’d also drop the oil. Easy way to tell if it’s got coolant in it. Same with the coolant. Just drop it and see if it’s mixed.

    Pressure test all the cylinders it is possible to have a blown head gasket and only have coolant leaking into the oil, I had a similar issue on my 1991 Suzuki gsxr400 except the exhaust gases was getting into the coolant but not the oil and that was down to a blown head gasket but luckily a sniff test gave me the answers but for you, you’ll definitely need to do a leak down test on the cylinders if that comes back fine then you know your head gasket is fine. Hope this helps

    Not sure if these engines have one but if theres an oil cooler that coolant passes through that could also be the reason for "mayo" on the oil cap but as previous comments have said a pressure test will show alot easier also a compression test would show a failing headgasket as cylinder pressure would be less if the gasket has failed

    I've been following you since the beginning and have enjoyed all your videos, but this project is going to be one of my favorites because I have an Astra H with the same engine. I also had a burnt cylinder head gasket because the accessory belt broke while driving (you can ask the previous owner if his accessory belt broke while driving), check if the antifreeze is leaking or if the antifreeze is bubbling in the expansion tank if there are air bubbles in the expansion tank, check if it loses antifreeze from one day to the next, check the cap on the expansion tank if it is defective (when it is defective the tests fail and let you think that it would not be the head gasket), you can try with another cap that you know is not defective and if the engine goes crazy with the new cap then the cylinder head gasket is burnt. For you, it could be something else, maybe the water pump. The infernal noise from the engine may be due to the distribution, it did the same to me and I also changed it at the same number of kilometers.

    • @jameznm
      @jameznm 11 місяців тому +1

      You've touched on a good point mate, I've repaired a few of these that have cooked themselves due to the belt being thrown off/shredded and with no temp gauge the driver has no idea it's cooking itself the only clue is the battery light, as alternator isn't turning.

    • @cristianstefan1394
      @cristianstefan1394 11 місяців тому

      @@jameznmThank you, mate! You're right, you don't realize if the cylinder head gasket will burn because you don't see the temperature of the water in the engine. In my case, the accessory belt broke while I was driving on a national road and I didn't realize it in time because I was listening to the music a bit loud, I realized it when I noticed that the power steering stopped working, then I saw the battery light and after that the smoke also appeared. Since then I listen to music at a normal volume, enter the secret menu and check the temperature and check as often as I can. 😂 Most importantly, I check the accessory belt and change it on time!

    I had exactly the same issue on same engine. Same symptoms as yours (engine light, rough running, mayo under cap and same codes for 02 sensors) it only cost 450 for the car so bought cheap 02 sensors to try and get me through another few months of motoring. Both sensors were a nightmare to remove!! Managed to change them and made no difference at all. In the end I suspect it was head gasket. I ran the car until it went pop and got rid!

  • @aydenmcalinden5351

    Get the rocker cover of and heck the rockers mines sounded like that turned out the tappats broke by the rocker which then broke the rocker leading to the head gasket failure as one bank stopped working, also check the steering rack the thr pinion goes in to the rack the housing around it breaks, just seen the steering rack on the one scanner

  • @Huffy..
    @Huffy.. 11 місяців тому

    I cant comment on the Head Gasket but it needs testing correctly, if deemed the gasket is good then start with your 02 sensor before the cat, reset it and run it to relearn the values.
    Service the thing, oil/filter - plugs, flush the coolant, change the thermostat, check there is no coolant leaking from the EGR side which to be honest with these cars just take it off and clean it and refit with new gasket.
    Rocker cover gasket is easy and cheap, whilst the rocker cover is off clean the cover and check the breather piper holes are not all gunked up and the associated hoses top right of the rocker cover. Also check the oil pressure switch is not leaking, as another common one.
    I have a fixer upper run round, same as this and I have done all the above, and the coil pack , several thousand miles later, I have now have the thing running very rich, with the EML on and fault code indicating a fuel trim issue, I am going to test the MAF sensor tomorrow, as this is another common thing to go on these. Its a good run around when it works, mine is also very tap tap tappy on idle and it sounds like there is a rattle on turn over which I believe is oil starvation.
    I am eager to see what you do with this, if the head is fine then hopefully that sensor will sort your running problem.

    No "mayo" on dipstick i say you be fine timing chain might be issue they usually good for 130k on a good serviced engine. People seem neglect oil changes on chained engines but think the crap in the oil gets between the links in a chain and make it wear which makes in stretch.

    I’m quite familiar with these engines, it’s all normal after that mileage including the rattles and leak from rocker gasket, if head has blown it usually spews pressure out of expansion tank With cap closed , often a heavy white smoke from exhaust, the mayo is probably condensation, wipe it off and get hot and see if it clears a bit, also sounds like it’s probably overdue its oil service, Vauxhall say yearly my advice on this engine every 6 months for anyone that plans to keep the car, the temperature can top best side of 100c before cooling fan kicks in, that can be a shock when you first see it. Despite quirks of Astra H they’re still a good drivers car and fairly reliable.

    Alot of short trips can cause condensation under the oil cap causing the mayonnaise because the car hasnt been ran long enough for the oil to warm up remember coolant will always warm quicker then oil, so just because water might be upto temp doesnt mean the oil would be, also im sure these vauxhall engines have problems with pcv pipes and the pcv valve which could also be causing the mayonnaise under the oil cap

    It will show signs of head gasket if it’s not been used in a long time.and the battery toast
    It’s rocker cover gasket

    I’ve got the 1.6 elite model yours sounds like mine with oil situation it’s where oil filter housing meets the engine block it’s self the gaskets are shit I dno about the 1.4 but mine 1.6/1.8 models it’s common it’s the oil cooler

  • @MrAndyladd

    the residue on the oil cap is quite normal on vauxhall engines they always get condensation

  • @liamgough639
    @liamgough639 11 місяців тому

    It’s the oil cooler mixing coolant with oil and that’s probably where the oil leak is dripping down onto your down pipe .. it’s part of the oil filter housing

    I think when you revved I thought I could there the tape heads and the chain sounded really loose
    Because I thought on my corsa the chain was gone but everything time I would rev it I could her the tape head and the Astra sound the exact same as my corsa and for the miss fire it could be down to the timing like it could jumped timing so that’s why it sound really rough?

  • @paulsimpson9908
    @paulsimpson9908 11 місяців тому

    That timing chain is fooked 14:49 /stretched J. Needs timing chain kit and timing chain chest cover gasket at a minimum.

    Could it possibly be water pump related I know that often causes the mayo happened on my corsa just a thought

  • @kerbsidemobilemechanic
    @kerbsidemobilemechanic 11 місяців тому

    Mate, the engine sounded like
    A box of nails in a washing machine on start up, common for the timing chains to stretch on these engines, I’d say that is why previous owner hasn’t got it sorted, if timing is out this would also cause a misfire, I’d ignore the oil cap mayo, most likely condensation or indeed the Pcv valve which is built into the cam cover 👍

    Compression test the cylinders, coolant pressure test also. Quite normal that under the oil cap.

    Looks like the timing chain cover gasket has failed where the water pump bolts through, very common on the Vauxhall 1.2/1.4 engines, had this myself as well as a noisy timing chain so change that at the same time 🔧👍

  • @mancsblue
    @mancsblue 11 місяців тому

    The noise could be coming from the timing belt area and the tensioners
    I doubt the mayo under the cap is anything more than condensation if it's been sitting
    Also use a OEM O2 sensor the aftermarket ones are rubbish
    A good service and those things and it should be fine
    I rate the 1.8 vauxhall engine good strong engines if you keep on top of them

    Id just change the lambda sensor and see what its like after. I dont think it will be head gasket tbh, with it being sat fir ages id say its just condensation build up on the cap
