    I've caught stripers and bluefish from shore using bunker, mackerel, and squid. They've really started to crack down on the striper regulations. A minimum size of 28", but also a maximum size of 34", and circle hooks are now required. The head boat doesn't even bother doing nighttime striper trips anymore.

      Awesome!! Seriously brother. I bought a 21’Sea Pro bay new in 2004 and was planning on being buried in it. We beat the brakes off it! I used to run 20-30 miles out of Oregon inlet in January. Swells so big we lost sight of land every 3 seconds even though we were only 3 miles out! By 2015 I was on my 3rd trailer from the beatings! When I partnered with Sea Pro in 2016 I was sad to part with her, but I sold it nearly for what I paid in 2004! These new Sea Pros would EAT that 04 in a single gulp even though I never thought that was possible. Thanks again for the support brother!! I truly appreciate it!! Buy that boat and don’t look back! @Mike Smedley you ever catch stripers using a drop shot set up with a bigger circle hook with the bend at the eye of the hook? That way setting up a drop shot helps with the set up. I'm considering trying it of course using a straight shank without the 45 degree bend at eye of the hook probably be harder to set up a drop shot. I'm going to try my luck catching a striper using a drop shot with a large smoke shad fluke come March to see if I have luck. Maybe try the lake to see if I catch a striper I know stripers dwell in big lakes I seen you fish big lakes an catch tanks Mike 🙂

    Hi Mike, we are in downeast maine across from MDI and we have lots of Mackerel and Pogies schools in our bay, however we are unable to hook up with any Stripers. We tried live lining Macks in a usually productive spot and tried chunking pogies, still no luck. What am I doing wrong and how can I tell if the stripers are in the bay. Also lots of Porpoise and seals around the schools. Thanks in advance.

      They should be in there thick right now. Look for any type of hump or drop offs in less than 15 ft of water near deeper water. Closest to the bait schools is best. Chunk in those areas. Also try drifting near those bait schools jigging the Ben Parker spoons. Sometimes the spoons out fish live bait near schools. amzn.to/32x6lZk

    For deeper thermocline: if a swimbait jig runs 10’ down 60’ back. Do you add 10’ + the down rigger ball depth? Is there ever a no mans land? Our lake is almost 100’ thermo cline by the dam can be 25-30’

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  18 днів тому

      @@seedcropinsuranceguru great question. thermocline’s can be very interesting from lake to lake. You have to take as many mental notes as possible and using downscan with 2D sonar really helps. I personally never fish below a thermocline when Striper fishing because Stripers have many physical needs that other fish might not have. For instance, when I mark large fish below the thermocline I know that they are likely catfish. Downscan can show you the shape of the larger fish and you will see that distended belly that big cats have. Take a mental note. You only see those catfish shapes below that depth so you know that’s dead water for a Striper and you can focus above that. Catfish need a fraction of the dissolved oxygen that a Striper needs. With down riggers I always stacked at least 1 additional line above the ball. Many times the ball would attract fish so I keep the lure close to the ball (less than 10 feet) I stacked a line 10 ft above the ball. Send the ball down to the thermocline, take notes on which bait they are hitting, the bait IN it or ABOVE it, then set ALL the baits at that depth. There is just no real way to know these things without trial and error. It helps when you fish the same lake a lot. You can learn a lot with live bait too, if my Shad or herring dies fast at 40ft down it probably suffocated below the thermocline. Send the next bait to 30ft. Take more notes. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    Advantages with two anchors?
    Disadvantages only using one?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 роки тому +1

      In heavy currents one is usually fine. In slack currents your boat will swing all over the place making it difficult to fish more than just a few lines. When you double you can keep the boat nearly dead still. You can fish many more lines and when a tip bounces you’ll know it’s a fish and not boat movement.

      The best advice I can give is to find spots like points and bottle necks to fish. Stripers feed very shallow a lot so they are a fish that can be caught from the bank or surf easier than most other species. Points and bottle necks near deep water will be the best. What if you have no electronics of any kind then what because it seems that if you have a boat unless you got fancy electronics then you don’t catch fish

      No problem. I fished for MANY years with nothing but a depth finder that didn’t show fish. no plotter. Stick to points. Spend less time on each point until you find them. Once you log a few good spots you’ll be money!

    Hey Mike would your typical spinning rod an reel combos be good for stripers with moderate fast action tip type rods. I have a 6'6 okuma medium power moderate fast action tip. The bigger rods I have are medium heavy an heavy fast action which I know u stated moderate to moderate fast action medium power rods work best?

    Hey Mike didn't see no sinker on your setup? Do you use sinkers? Also I have a striper stealth rod I bout 2 years ago what Conventional reel would you recommend that is decent that won't break the bank?

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  Рік тому +1

      I avoid using weights when possible. There wasn’t much current on this day so we didn’t need weight. If your baits all tumble to the back of the boat you will need to add weight. 2-3oz is usually enough unless you’re in a wicked rip. I would recommend the Accurate Fury 400. If that’s out of your budget this is a decent option for $200. amzn.to/3IwjrM3. If you ever get more Striper Stealth rods. Use code Smedley5 for a discount 👍👍. Please let me know how you like the rod!!! Thanks brother!

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  3 роки тому

      I go as low as 8lb test in extremely clear lakes, especially with live bait. Experiment a little on different rods to see what makes a real difference. For cut bait you don’t need to go as light, even in clear lakes. On lake Lanier with live bait I use 10lb leaders

      Murray is an excellent lake to get started on. Good numbers and plenty of quality fish. Shoot me an email mikesmedley9@gmail.com. I MIGHT be in that area and MIGHT have a spot on the boat if you would like to jump on. Won’t cost nothing.

      You might not want to hear it, but it’s honestly a safety issue if you don’t have SOME type of chart plotter and depth sounder. Especially if you’re taking other people out that you’re responsible for. There are parts of that bay that have only inches of water at low tide in the middle. You can get a Simrad Go 9” with 2 CHIRP sonar bands side and down scan with chart plotter and maps for $899. Transducer included. amzn.to/3UAMSl8. You can find the Go5 for less than $500 with transducer most times too. Even if it’s only a small basic machine, you really should have something brother. The basic machines are worlds better than what we had just 15 years ago and you’ll catch fish all year and not just the fall blitz. 👍👍. Sorry for the sermon, but you don’t want to die while fishing with a buddy.

    • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
      @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS  4 місяці тому +1

      I would fish cut bait from a bank close to a point. Further back in creeks is best. You won’t need to cast very far out so any medium size spinning rod will work. 20lb mono. 4/0 circle hook.
