In this video, I took the Water Wolf out to two lakes: Millerton Lake and O'Neill Forebay. At Millerton Lake I noticed the small mouth bass were chasing my AJ Lures swimbait. They were aggressive but not inhaling the bait. After watching the footage from my Water Wolf, I went over to O'Neill Forebay for some striper fishing.
I stuck to my AJ Lures swimbait and caught a few fish. I did notice that i was getting a lot of hits from these stripers so I switch out the AJ lures swimbait for a SpeedLures 130 jerkbait. I figured they must be doing the same thing the bass were doing at Millerton Lake. Anything that would hit the lure would surely get hooked. Sure enough, after putting on the SpeedLures 130 jerkbait, my hookup ratio increased.
Sometimes seeing what happens underwater can improve your hook ups quite a bit.

This is a great video, its nice to see focus on the science of fishing, rather than "this lure is green and seems to work".
Exactly! Thank you
Yeah this ones pink I think that’s good...
Lmaooo
Great content, my granddad would say, I just use the blue one and crank slow. 🤭
Old but gold. Love these types of vids. There’s more to than just casting that rod haha
Wow! This is awesome! I just started Striper fishing with lures and this video helped a whole lot! Thanks for sharing. You got yourself a subscriber!
Great video! Gives us a better understanding of how they behave and what's going on when we feel those small hits.
Great video, Strippers are another world of Bass fishing, You really shared some great info here, thank you, id love to see more.
Glad you found the insight helpful. I'll certainly be getting more. Thank you
I appreciate this video. Thank you for it. I am most impressed that the fish were not spooked by that size of a camera right at them. That tells me some things about the fish. I like going to Bass Pro Shops and watching the bass in the tank. If they are hugging the back wall and structure, they are doing the same thing in the lakes. Every time.
Seeing how they react underwater can tell us alot. They're curious creatures. The camera sometimes attracts them too. Glad the video helped you.
Awesome video Meng. Your video showed exactly how I hook a 21 inch striper at O'NEIL Forebay, hooked it on the body. Basically it got caught on the triple hook, fowled hook it as it try to injure the lure 😆
excellent video...one of the best and most informative I have seen. Thank You for sharing
Thank you! Glad it was helpful
This is a very good video. I notice bass have a similar behavior as stripe bass. I’ve had bass strike super hard on a whopper plopper and missing it. But I’ll slow it down and make it seem like it’s injured and they’ll come back and demolish it!
This is an amazing video! What a great observation.
Thank you. The things you figure out from underwater videos.
Impressed!!!! I just started out fishing in the area and came across your channel. Subscribed!!!
Thank you for subscribing brother.
Great video! I always wondered what a strike underwater looked like. This will help me next time I go fishing. He's right those are spotted bass not smallmouth bass.
I agree
Very informative and explained great footage thanks for sharing 👌🏽
No problem. Now you know
That was very cool and helpful, thanks
great video Meng. i appreciate all the info from your videos to the FA Facebook group.
Glad I could help brother.
Great video!
Great shots!!
Cool video. Ccan you do one with cut bait for striper?
Great video by the way
That’s an awesome video! I just subscribed!
Great footage thanks for uploading
Great footage 👍🏽
Great video! BTW, What speed where trolling at?
THAT WAS AWESOME. thanks for the underwater footage
Anytime
@@MengXyong how do u get the lure down to hug bottom when trolling
@@keilanidakoala351 You gotta know your depth. I measure the depth of all my rigs with a device that measures maximum depth. So I know exactly how deep I am. Here's the depth chart for the Atlas Umbrella Rig. www.tacklebuilders.com/how-deep-are-you-trolling/
Great information thank you.
I know this video was some time ago but how far did you cast out and keep it there while you were trolling?
Brilliant analysis!
Thank you
Excellent footage and comments.
Thank you
interesting stuff! appreciate your efforts and sharing it!
Gives you an insight that some of us will never see. Glad I could help.
Cool video! Some helpful info
New subscriber. love the video, very informative, will search for more, what speed were you trolling? Time of year, and water temperature?
This was about 3mph in the fall. Can't remember what the water temp was.
that explains alot about the hook ups im getting trolling for trout, on one trip we had mostly all side snags
It's great when the underwater video explains what's going on. Tight lines.
Awesome man. Loved it
Glad you enjoyed it. It's cool seeing how stripers behave underwater. You can learn a lot from it.
Awesome Vid!
Awesome video super helpful!
Thanks brother. Time to rip some lips.
Great video!! Good job
Thanks brother. It helps too when the stripers are cooperating. lol
Awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing. Be well.
Thank you! You too!
AWESOME Video
Thanks brother
thanks for that ....u dont post as often but ur vids are always so good i have to watch multiple times....i live litrely 35 yards from the aquaduct by kettlman city..i try to fish everyday thnks for all ur vids great tips
Thanks for the kind words brother. My motto is quality over quantity. I put a lot of time and effort into making each one. I'm happy you're finding value in my videos.
I'm so happy I found your videos. Yes, I will have to watch over and over your videos to learn to fish better. I still don't know how to jig for stripped bass yet. Can you please name a quality rod and reel, line and lures for stripped bass? My wife is getting so used to the fact I come home empty hands from fishing. She would be very surprised if I ever bring home fish. :(
Surprisingly the Bass Pro Johnny Morris Platinum rod is doing well for me. I pair it with a Lews Lite speed spool reel with 30lb braided line. I also have a Phenix M1 rod that gets the job done as well. Where are you out of? Maybe we can hit the water one day.
Awesome FishAholics. I will stop by Bass Pro Shop tomorrow checking out what you use. I live in San Jose. I love to get a chance to fish by your side since my moto is "Knowledge is Power." Can't wait bother!
Email me: mengxyong@thefishaholics.com. Let's make it happen.
nice video man i learn something new today thanks
Glad I could help.
I make lures for a living and have often thought of making a striper plug that could be filled with chum or oil...what are your thoughts?
Todd Mccollister I think that would be a great idea.
How did you video the fish biting?
kind explains why i feel bumps but dont hook up, they head butt the lure... lol!
thanks it reminds us to sometimes slow down our presentation first before anything else.
Exactly! Glad I could help
what weight did you use on the water wolf and what length leader for the boottail ? I been having a issue with my boottail not being in view of the water wolf
No weight on the waterwolf. Leader is about 16-18"
thank you
subbed bro keep up the the good work !
Thank you. I do my best
great video
Thank you!
those were spotted bass not small mouth. Great video!
Thank you. There's a debate down in the comments somewhere about it. Lol
RetroGameHunter 000 yea that a technicality there are specific species but at the same time a spotted bass is a small mouth a striper is a large mouth right at least there mouth are the same
Tiger Bass :P
Nice video! What kind of camera are you using? Please inform. Thank you
That's a Water Wolf
That's why it seems like I just snag them sometimes. Nice video man.
Thanks brother. Glad I could help
that brings some knowledge to the table. thanks.
It's insight we'll never know until we put a camera underwater. Glad I could help
cool footage
Thank you
great video!
Thank you
Nice Job Meng with this weather change do you think it will affect the behavior in a positive or negative way?
A cold front after a warming trend usually slows down the bite. The next warming trend should increase activity. That doesn't mean you won't catch fish during a weather change.
What kind of camera are you using to get this footage??
That's a Water Wolf
Hey Mang, I see you were trolling at Millerton. I remember quite some years ago, it was common to hook up on strippers at Millerton as well. What ever happened to that fishery for strippers?
I read somewhere that there's an age slot when striper reproduction is at it's prime. Once they get past that, they becomes less successful. Most of the stripers at Milerton are older heavy weights that are probably past their prime. That could explain the declining fishery. The state would have to restock the striper population to keep the fishery healthy.
That is some green dirty looking water! Always interesting to see this pov though, Bass are so aggressive even when not biting it's crazy to watch.
Crazy and exciting
These guys are maddening sometimes. I spent over an hour on a bridge in Maryland and every cast, my lure was trailed by 3 or 4 stripers. Great visibility. All they wanted to do was follow it; tried everything to get a strike, but they didn’t want to commit.
Hi great video....what underwater camera are you using. Thanks john
Water wolf
Awesome info! 💯
Glad it was helpful!
I think I saw you guys Saturday! You and another guy, your brother? Cool footage
It took a while to get that footage but was worth it. Saturday I was out with my three sons. Sunday I was out with a fellow FA member.
That was awesome.
Awesome!!!! what type of camera are you using for the underwater footage?
This is a Water Wolf
That was well worth the watch. Thanks. Pause after a hit and the fish should come back for the wounded fish. Thanks for sharing.
That change in action is all it takes sometimes
FishAholics was this Milton hill lake
Millerton lake and O'Neill Forebay
wow awesome. learned a lot from this video
Glad I could help. Definitely an insight that's a must know
You called this lure a speedlure jerbait lol. What was the name on the package when you got it lol. Lots of jerk baits go fast. Just like the action and was wondering if you knew what it was
I absolutely love all the drama about fluoro, mono, braid online and this guy has a *giant fucking camera* a few inches in front of his lure and catches fish.😂🤣 Fantastic content man. Thank you!
Lmao. Line visibility is overrated.
great f/n video - along w/vocal details. thx now we all kno" peace
Thanks brother
Good stuff
Thanks brother
love your vids
Thanks brother
howd u rig that swimbait? using a jighead?
Would it be a good idea to slow it down occasionally if you feel the bump of the hit? I would think theyd strike a bite after that
That's exactly what you should always do. Good observation
i live in NY and go fishing in the Hudson River, i dont habe a boat so i fish from the shore with my dad, we havent gone fishing in a while tho but we are planning to go soon, would you recommend blood worms or lures? great vid btw :)
Both! I've used both with success. Once I couldn't get any strikes on a jigged fluke so I hooked a bloodworm on the jigged fluke. Two casts later, it was fish on.
Proyecta Mercy2
Project Mercy2 Aye i live on the hudson too, they have sick striper fishing through May, the best way to catch is blood worms on a bottom fishing rig. Lures dont catch nearly as much. The bass react really well to blood works when they are on the spawn, my buddy got a 35lber, and another guy set the state record a few years ago on a blood worm. Caught tons of fish on them
Can i do that bait on pier
Good video and how fast were you trolling?
Thank you. I was going about 3mph here
same here man , learned a lot thanks !!
Now you know. Glad I could help
Do you have a video showing how you rigged that camera up to the lure? That’s an amazing view, if you could view that in real time you would know exactly when to change your presentation.
I used a waterwolf cam at the time. It only records and can't be viewed in real time
Man, you're amazing FishAholic. So, if I understand correctly, I should slow downs my retrieval of the swim bait right? What's about the jerk, pause, and retrieve? Thank you very much again and again for your very informative videos.
If you're trolling, slowing down the boat or pulling your rod back n forth once in a while can entice a strike. From shore, try different retrieves until you get a bite. Sometimes they'll like it fast with a quick pause, sometimes they'll like it slow and steady. Let the fish tell you what it wants that day. Thanks for the kind words brother and good luck.
Great advices. Your inputs are always informative and helpful. I will try practicing techniques you advice.
Oh, what do you recommend for type of rod and reel, as well as line for swim bait (like the big hammer) as I fish inshore? There are so many too choose from as I shop at Bass Pro Shop. I can afford quality tackles(I spent much money on average stuff) so now I want to devote good quality tools even though I understand quality tackles don't really make me a better fisherman. Thank you so much in advance FishAholics.
I don't use swimbait rods as often since I like lighter setups. I had a Dobyns once which was sturdy and worked well with some heavier swimbaits I had. Casting all day with it was quite a feat. For fishing line 30lb power pro braid has been working great for me.
thats sick. how far is the bait from the camera?
Thank you. The swimbait is about 10" from the camera.
Nice video
Thank you
How do you get that swimbait to swim so fast and stay so deep???? Lead core line maybe since your trolling??? I would like to swim one that fast for bass down deep
I was using a downrigger
You will see this from fish that have been pressured/caught before. Especially pike. They test the lure to see if it is food.
Great video
Thanks brother
how do you fish at different heights with a swim bait?
I was using a downrigger
wow nice video !
Thank you
how do you get the lures to go lower and deeper and how fast are you trolling?
I was using a downrigger
Cool camera !!
Thank you
What do you think about stopping the boat and using a drop shot? I fish with people that like to sit and use live bait. It's boring to me.
Drop shot will work. I’ve done it with crappie jigs and stripers will hit it
uw topics are awsome. Cool.
Seeing what happens underwater helps alot
We Fishing, Good Job
Cool. Content
I always knew that stripers hit and run
Yes sir
do you have a link for the camera you'r using ?
thanks
Here you go - amzn.to/2gIAlgb
How long does it take a fingerlinger stiletto grow to 21 inches
About 4 years
where was this video made?
Location is in the descriptions
O'Neill Forebay is striped bass heaven
Santa Nella
I want Down to South Carolina these things are like 1ft 10 lbs by me they are 30-50 in and like 40lbs
I'd like to see one using live minnows on stripers.
Me too! Lol One of these days when I do use them I'll give it a shot.
Been having a problem
Strippers follow the lure all the way to the rock I was standing on and not hitting the lure
Sure , your hookups increased but are those foul hooked fish legal?
Check your local regultions
Loved the video, thx. OSH :-)
My pleasure!
I live right next to millerton in friant we should go fishing sometime
Shouldn't be a problem. In time
Wtg nice vid i try this met next time i hit the water... keepn rippinlips 👍
Thanks brother. Let me know how it goes
