  • Today I’m showing you everything I own as I continue to reduce my possessions in an effort to live more simply here in London. I don’t mind owning more items as long as they are useful to me, but I still feel I have a number of items which I could live without.
    Are you also working to reduce your belongings in the new year? Feel free to comment your progress or ask any questions below.

      I really appreciate your comment, thanks Szymon. In the past year, my other pursuits have occupied my time such that it leaves me no time for making videos. In a way it is unfortunate because I did enjoy what I got out of making these videos, but at the same time i know that I'm concentrating currently on my top X priorities rather than overstretching myself, which is an even more important part of minimalism (in my opinion) than possession reduction. Making these videos was a priority which only just got cut off from that list, so if my work structure changes in the future (as I am hoping and expecting it will) then this brings videos back onto the list of things that I choose to make time for.
      To give you a quick update since this last video; I've sold my old camera setup, given away a couple pieces of clothing and a few odd things like the cushion for my seat, my swiss army knife and document scanner. On the other hand I've taken on more books related to my work (unavailable on kindle) and added to my glass jar and tupperware collection so that I now can buy all my food zero-waste from bulk shops.
      Although I make no promises on a video soon, if I do - it'll be a possession update.

    Minimalism does not mean counting your things, but keeping
    the things you use regularly and
    that you love. Bearing in mind
    one needs more things if living
    in a four seasons country. Also
    it means releasing inner past feelings of hate or... Eliminating
    toxic people in your circle. Both
    family and friends. It should also
    free up your time to enable you to
    do the things you enjoy. All the
    best.

      Yh you sum it up nicely. I wish more people would see through to this point, it makes for a happier life concentrating on what matters to you. Possessions are only a highly visible analogy to these other aspects. Thanks for watching and commenting

    What a motivating video. :) I am kind of excited for the next video, see if you downsize your wardrobe or just use things up. I am surprised that you thought the socks were too much and needed to be downsized but then I know the overwhelmed feeling I had before my first declutter and how good it feels to have a workable number of clothes.

      Hey, I think on the wardrobe i've now got close to a level I'm happy with, maybe one max item that could go, but not much.

    Don't you think reusing the paper for drawing is a bit too much? At the very least, you could look at your work in the future and see your progress, or what was on your mind at the time. I guess scanning before erasing could work too.
    Otherwise, love these possession checks)

    • @moolloos9975
      @moolloos9975  6 років тому +2

      Hey, i think i didnt go into enough detail to explain what i meant, when i draw i make iterative improvements to the shape and details which require frequent erasing, and the erasor pen was leaving a shiny residue on the paper which means i couldn't redraw over it as i develop the draft for the same drawing, meaning having to shift to a new piece of paper in the middle of drafting. I didn't mean once finished with a drawing i erase everything and reuse it for a new drawing, yes that would be a bit too far haha :) thanks for watching

    Hi!
    How different you count from how I do :) Counting a suit as one item fells ok to me, if it´s (allmost) allways used together ;) But the hangers and clothbags, you don´t count them?
    How about furniture? And the Bonsaitree?

    • @moolloos9975
      @moolloos9975  5 років тому

      hi Anna :)
      at first, your point about the suit bags and hangers strikes as a good one, but on second thought not so much. Keeping the suits in good condition necessitates always hanging them(hanger) and keeping them safe from moths in storage(suit bag), so at least for me the decision to have any suit always, without option, necessitates both a hanger and suit bag with it. So despite your point, I'd stick to one suit(and the hanger and bag i keep it on/in) as counting as one item of 'suit'.
      On furniture; I only count furniture that I strictly own. see my reply to Warbeast911's comment on this video for full explanation.
      On bonsai, I shot this video at parents house, it's their bonsai
      thanks for commenting

    If you count a stool and cushion. What about a bed or vacuum?

    • @moolloos9975
      @moolloos9975  6 років тому +2

      When I began counting possessions for the purpose of these videos I needed some consistent rule to follow. The rule i settled on is that if it is something i personally own and would take with me to wherever i move next then i will count it.
      How this applies to your examples;
      I currently use a shared vacuum cleaner in shared accomodation, the same way i use a shared toaster and a shared chopping board - but you also don't see these counted. If i were to at some point move to my own private accomodation i would buy a vacuum cleaner (and start counting it), not bother getting myself a toaster (I only use it because it happens to be available but dont need it in my life), and would get myself a chopping board, and hence start counting that as well.
      As for the bed, this also goes along similar lines. I currently own no mattress and no bedframe (but you can see them in the video/kind of); these are borrowed from the accommodation i live in and will stay here once i leave, they are not my responsibility other than to take reasonable care of whilst using them. Again, ifwhen I move to my own place with no bed provided I would be in a position to decide whether to buy and own one. The assumed answer is i would have to get a bed (which I feel is the root of the question you ask), but in fact I would only buy a mattress as that can rest just as well on a clean floor as it does on a (to me unnecessary) bedframe.
      In the end the rule I'm using for whether to count or not is arbitrary and changing it significantly changes the number i arrive at. The purpose of the rule was to make all counting decisions as easy as possible, and it does that very well. You are very right to point out it leaves out some items (vacuum, mattress) which by nature of shared accommodation I currently do not need to own but would own if i lived by myself. The upside is it doesnt have me wasting time deciding/justifying whether, just because I use a shared item that i otherwise would not own, i should count that or not (toaster, bedframe).
      Thanks for watching and the comment!

      moolloos I thought it would be like that.
      I also have some stuff my roommate brought and sure enjoy them but wouldnt buy them myself.
      Sadly most apartment's are not with a kitchen or bed so you have to get this stuff yourself.
      Would prefer flats with furniture included and thimgs like freezer or stove.

    • @moolloos9975
      @moolloos9975  6 років тому

      hey, yes I agree it would be nice if at least the basics were always provided, but then I also like to pick out my own things and might not be happy with the ones already there if they dont work well for example.
      It also changes a lot between whether you are going to rent a whole flat for yourself or just a room in a flat/house share, as in the former like you say, you often get nothing and then end up buying a lot of kitchen and other furnishings that you may only need for that particular accomodation

    Great video ! It just bothered me a bit when you said that you brought your weights to a recycle center. Why just not give them away to someone? Also you forgot to count your bonzaï tree (just kidding :-)

    • @moolloos9975
      @moolloos9975  5 років тому

      hey Jonathan thanks for watching :)
      i cannot remember how i explained it in the video about the weights, but probably not in much depth. but don't worry, the recycling centre has a 'used but functioning items' drop off point where you can leave things like old TVs, shoes, furniture etc. and that's where I left it, so someone else will have been able to take them for free and make good use of them. At the time i didnt have any friends who wanted/needed them. I didn't literally put them into metal recycling!
      haha good spot on the bonzai, you arent the first ;P it's my parents' plant as that's where I filmed this video, hence not on the list.
      thanks again

      @moolloos9975  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Ann, i don't have a video coming up, but actually not much has changed in the past couple years. Two notable things; i do all my shopping zerowaste (lucky to have a large z-waste shop closeby), which means i have a lot of glass jars/tupperware containers for filling up and holding food which i didnt have before; and the other thing is i spend a lot of time studying so i have collected a lot of physical books over the past couple years which are unavailable in e-book format. Other than that it's all pretty much the same.
      Thanks for watching and your comment!

    Do you know the exact name of your suitcase? I need one and yours looks like it would be perfect. Also it's Rimowa so it will last for a long time

    • @moolloos9975
      @moolloos9975  5 років тому +2

      Hmm unfortunately i cant help, this was a passdown from my parents and we dont know exactly which model it is. I think rimowa no longer makes exactly this size/shape since their re-design/refresh when they brought in all the 4wheel models. Tbh those sticking out 4 wheels look like the first thing that might break although ive never personally owned a new one so maybe they are very sturdy in design and materials...
      But that one issue aside i'd always recommend a proper metal suitcase from the likes of rimowa. It's going to be a lifetime product with no need to repurchase and produce unnecessary landfill!
      Thanks for watching :)
