My 111 Possessions for Living Simply and Sustainably | Minimalism

- I've lived with just 111 possessions, all of which fit into a backpacking backpack. I've also lived with just 44 possessions which fit into a daypack.
And I've biked across the United States three times with all of my gear on my bicycle.
Right now I own about 600 possessions which comfortably fit into a shelter that I temporarily call home.
I've been simplifying and downsizing my life for over a decade and lived in multiple tiny houses and structures.
In this video I share what I would own if I designed my possessions to fit into just a backpack and onto my bicycle with a bicycle rack and bicycle bags.
The purpose of these ~111 possessions is to meet my basic needs to live simply and sustainably, deeply connected to Earth and our communities.

Hello Dear Friends,
I am joyous to be living simply and sustainably and to be an example for many of you on this journey.
My example is extreme for many of you. However, we can all take away inspiration and insights to bring into our own lives. I have written extensive information to assist you. Here is The Beginner’s Guide to Downsize Your Life and a video that teaches how to simplify:

stove has the air pollution tho? 6:29 . ty for ur works
What do you do with the $$$$ made from your social pages?
I dare you to own nothing, not even a backpack. Jesus did it why can’t you
@@robertchflynn he's talked some about it in previous Vids. Other people mostly handle?
Cool fellow looks like my neighbor friend on Przhevalskogo in Irkutsk Siberia
If anybody feels bad watching this, please realize you don't have to live like this at all, and just getting rid of your clutter and all genuinely unused items is enough.
Most homes hoard to some extent and are terrible at routinely going through their homes and getting rid of things they genuinely have abandoned for months or years. Just do that. You don't have to uncomfortably compress your closet to 20 or less garments, or build a house with pre-existing cabinets so that you don't have to buy separate ones.
I hope this helps you feel less bad! Start with one small area, like a bookshelf, and congratulate yourself for your efforts.😁❤️
Exactly 💯
Very well said. This is a journey one takes, not an assignment.
consuming less would be a nice place to start. overconsumption is normalised in the States. not the case in the rest of the world. don't just declutter your stuff to have an excuse to buy more. maybe feeling bad touches a nerve that should be touched.
Hello Dear Friend,
Thank you for sharing. I always hope to speak compassionately to minimize the self-judgement that is common in our society.
This guide and video I have created is designed to help others to simplify one step at a time

Love,
Robin
@@drzeworyj I am implying to declutter so that you can have less stuff overall. Thank you for sharing. You do add a good point if people didn't fully get mine.
It’s funny I used to dream about owing a huge house with loads of possessions and own matching sets of crockery and bathroom items and a huge wardrobe with every shoe going (never accomplished that dream thank god) but the older I get the more grateful I am for the little stuff and the simple living and ‘less is more’ sort thing. I admire you and your amount of possessions and the way your house is so eco and bright and full of beautiful plants your living the dream and I aspire to be like you
I love your mindset so much
If you love it so much, why don’t you marry it ?
Me too
Less is more!
@@CharlesReedPi more is less
@matthewcain2880 exaaactly, my mom's a hoarder, and she doesn't know what she has, she can't find something, goes out to buy another one
So darn nice to see a minimalist wardrobe which isn’t black!
My favorite new activity is to downsize and declutter my life while watching your videos. Thank you for all the inspiration.
I love that you mentioned you don't need anything special when you were talking about your forks. I think a trap that so many people fall into when starting minimalism is buying really expensive stuff and rationalizing it by saying it'll last longer. Expensive stuff still creates waste. Cheap things from the thrift store are definitely the way to go!
Things from the thrift store are fine as long as they are excellent quality. No one needs to downgrade their standards for quality and beauty.
Whenever I am unnecessarily anxious I come here. It relaxes me.I wonder how beautifully life can be so simple and i can find time for the things I really value for !! Thanks Robin ❤ From India.
Thankyou Robin, definately agree, having less possesions give more quality to life. 💚
I consider myself a minimalist because I used to own like 85 dresses and now I only own 10 or 15😂 And I see stuff Robin has that I don't, like a liner for my sleeping bag, and now I HAVE to get a liner for my sleeping bag, because I hate feeling nylon on my skin too!
We really don’t need as much as we think ❤ always lovely to see your videos Rob 😊
What an incredible, kind and humble human Robin is. Thank you :)
If only I could live like you, thanks for the inspiration ❤
I've been looking into living a simple and sustainable life primarily for the selfish reason of being tired of working in a 9 to 5. I wonder if such a life is possible in city apartments. I've recently started watching youtube videos on aquaponics and growing microgreens in small spaces. I love the idea of being able to live in a small apartment with an efficient aquaponics system that could feed myself and maybe even a small family.
Instead of wasting time, money and space on a sofa, TV, dining table, stove, laundry machine, etc., it makes much better sense to utilise the space for a mini garden, fish tank and maybe even a composting bin.
Imagine a self-sustaining community within a large apartment complex... An impossible pipe dream but still.... maybe in the distant future.
You are an inspiration. Congrats for being a thriving minimalist. To each his/her own though. For now, my happiness is being some sort of an Ariel.
*Damn!!! I own 11,111 items and they all don't even fit in my 4 bedroom house and garage*
Help!!! This man is making us Americans look greedy! ;)
Seriously, he is doing it right...and a great soul.
If everyone lived this way, the world would be a far less polluted and landfill-filled place. I like your current home in NC too. It's pretty awesome and I think your sharing economy idea is very good. Reminds me of freegans, but you're a little different in a good way.
That's how everyone lived a couple of centuries back
I got to give this guy a hug. I love you Rob!💚
I love you too Dear Friend!
I want to see you again in Asheville when you’re in the area. It was awesome to learn about fermentation. Thanks for the book and seeds also!
Thanks so much for sharing this video with us, Robin. I've been following you for around 6 years now and I'm so glad to see you're making more videos of what you're up to again. I've been slowly cutting down on possessions since I found you years back, and really trying to change my mindset toward material goods. Really appreciate all you do, and I hope to meet you in person some day if you're ever in Ontario. Take care!
@rob I would love to know what your daily food intake is like please
I live most of the time on a touring bike and in a tent, and a thought I recently had, about seeing you (in an older video) using only cash and having all of your possessions in one place, is that it would be a good idea to have several caches hidden around (in the woods, with someone you trust, etc), so that, in case you ever get mugged and lose everything you're carrying, you could go to one of your caches and still be OK. Hope this helps
Always a huge inspiration to take the next steps in living mindfully. Appreciate you and yours!
What an incredible person. Thank you Rob ❤
Such an inspiration! I'm just starting to declutter & becoming a minimalist.
Yes we did find this helpful Rob! About the soap nuts, ceanothus grows just about anywhere can be used in place of buying them. I put in a small tree a few months ago and have used it to wash dishes and they came out great. Can't wait for the tree to get bigger so I is it for all my cleaning needs. Also I found a kid UA-cam that fixes his inner tubes with a piece of paper and glue, no patch kit necessary. I fixed my front tire a year ago now that way and it's still going strong! Best to all of you:-)
P.S. Came to me this morning that I had to add on about how wonderful it is that Robin is helping us re-scribe what it means to be a free human. I guess his IP address is his only connection now to The Matrix!?.....
Great video. You are an inspiration to everyone. I’ve been simplifying my life and have a way to go. You do great work for our earth. Keep it up.
Love your mindset and lifestyle.
Always so inspiring! Thanks, Robin.
Thanks for sharing! I always love seeing what items people own and why. It helps me to get ideas on what is useful! :)
This was so helpful! I’m planning a bike tour within the next few months and I want to take as little as possible. As always… thank you Rob!
What a great inspiration!
I don't aim at living exactly like a minimalist like you, but i do feel that owning too many things makes me unhappy, and it takes my focus away from the things i enjoy doing in life. So your style of life is a great inspiration to push me in the right direction and to bring me confort when I doubt myself.
Thank you for making this video!
I love the honesty, & I agree that it’s isn’t the number but the mindset that is essential.
You're absolutely right. I always thought to live a way of life like you. A lot of circunstances have not allowed to me to do that. It's a pleasure for me to see your videos and admire your way of life. Thank you. God bless you.
I've been downsizing for a few years now, but not for the same reasons. When I leave this screwed up world, I want to make it easy for my son to take over my stuff. I've been really trying hard, but then there's this thing called Amazon.
Very smart Robin. I need more because repairing my bikes myself and winter is harder where live now. I love working with my books. Good fortune and thanks for the inspirations. I like wool and glass too.
INSPIRING!! Appreciate the share Robin. Much Love
Excellent video. Thank you Rob
Love watching your videos Robin
amazing mindset
thanks for the video(s) - this will be a good one to come back to and rewatch and get some inspirations, very helpful!
Your intentional living is so inspiring. Curious: You mentioned no bank account and no ID but also that you sometimes bring your bike along on a plane. How would you manage security or, for that matter, buy a ticket?
I really appreciate your mindset, and how quality this video is.
I love this. It takes me back to how I grew up. Time to get back to the basics.
I’ve watched this multiple times. Really great.
Robin, I just love you! and admire you... I'm living with less and less things, your videos make me happy and relax me , I can only wish you the best: A long and healthy life...
Thank you for this video. It inspired me to a couple of concrete practical changes in my life. Once more. Thanks!
I really love your videos, love that you travel on your bike. I bought 2 msr seagull pots after watching your earlier videos. They are in great shape still. We live in a van in the urban area in FL & I'm always trying to downsize & live simply. 😊❤
Freedom is not easy. Love it
I love seeing this kind of thing. The bicycle stuff is useful. I'm trying to transition into biking more.
It's really good to connect to nature.
Great post ❤❤ I have gained much experience of living simply
You're the best Robin ❤
Much Love and Respect Sir!
A great example to follow.
Thanks Robin, you inspire me.
Great video, thank you!
Rock on Robin! Much Love
Thank you very much! 🌿
Great video!!! I learned a lot from this video. Thank you, Robin!!!
what a great class! congrats
Mutifunctional pot a must.
Right don't need fancy costly spoon fork if you'll end up losing them. The same with pens.
Thrift the best for regular use items.
I carried the original super tool for years, but switched to the wave for the scissors and one handed opening. Great job with the video
Wonderful work!👍
Props. This video was a very good reminder.
Thank you so much. You inspire me. I feel jealous of your lifestyle!
How to Love is one of my favorite books! Heart Like a River is so transformative.
Amazing inspirational ideas for my mission. I’m currently down to 66 items total and un-counting 😂. In my 4th sustainability year. I’m happier & healthier living off grid, free as a bird 😊
You are living the dream, my friend 😊
Bravo!!
I like this 😊great job
Me encantó. ¡Muchas gracias!
Thx you love this tipe of videos from you❤
Absolute Master ~ 🙏🏻
In my next life I want to be one of Rob's t-shirts! Love to all of you from Argentina!
God Bless your sweet heart! I live not as you, but by thrifting and giving back what no longer is needed at this stage of my life. REPURPASE, RECYCLE! We all make purchases and no one is saying, "you can't."
I see your message as,, "Purchase wisely and with thought." Lovely video!
Thank you
Love ya man, just biked across the US the first time, now im in Mexico continuing...fun hangin!
-sam from fingerlakes NY
Loved the video! When you pulled out that second toothbrush during the bike section I was worried that you cleaned your chain with the thing that cleans your teeth! Glad to hear it was an old one haha.
Your videos about the way that you live your life always inspire me, I'm always seeking to change for the better.
Keep doing what you're doing friend!
Look into flint and steel fire lighting. cutting down a old dull file for a striker and making char cloth out of old fabric will help to fet rid of plastic lighters and use that old cotton one more time.
You rock ! ❤❤❤❤
Fantastic video mate, iv learned allot I need to start making some changes, it's all about mindfulness
I suggest using not a steel wool but a steel chainmail. It doesn't damage the surface (or seasoning of iron skillets if used) and can be used to clean glass, ceramics, etc.
Amazing, salute to you bro.
I wish to see that Rob build a better simple style homestay. Open space without windows or doors is definitely a "No no" for me 😅
I love your attitude towards belongings. Everyone could probably go without buying more but at least working towards reducing clutter
Also love the video quality much thanks to cameraman❤
Thank you so much for sharing...
Only 99 comments, this man knows how to travel light , lets keep it under 111 comments guys 😅
Inspiring dude.🙌🏼
Love your content
I like your video. Thank you for sharing
I love my cotton grocery bags, I often travel with them even for weekend ans quick trips.
Lol ty ❤ ur style following in ur footsteps
Really enjoyed the video! 💚💚💚
Everytime I watch one of your video, I feel sooo goooood !
Hello Dear Friend Sara!
Thank you for sharing this with me. I'll continue on this path with you.
Love,
Robin
I tried rotating the racing handlebars up, so its more comfortable to ride,, doesnt require bending forward as much. while I havent tested it extensively, I think I find it much more comfortable. Also I have used old bicycle tubes for patching, they seem to work fine.
You rock ❤
I travelled the world for years with no more than 30 items, sometimes just 10
You've probably mentioned this in a previous video, but how do you get by with out id and a bank account? I love the idea of this lifestyle that you live 😎👍
very interesting
Cool, this is very similar to my own camping load
Great video dude
