For me one of the best concerts of all time. I watched it so many times since I'm a little kid. Still love it so much. A masterpiece. Thanks to this legends.
Colosseum live 1971, one of the best concerts of all time, very little known and yet legendary like very few, especially Lost Angeles, the epitome of that great moment
Dave Clemson's solo on Valentyne Suite is so exquisitely controlled through the accelerating tempo. Thats very challenging to attempt. Exceptional, but then they all are. R.I.P Dick Heckstall-Smith and Jon Hiseman.
Growing up on this music defenitively has been an advantage. I can honestly say this band has been a big influence on me. They even produced what must be one of the very best live albums ever (although it is hardly ever mentioned).
I saw them twice in the early seventies. Have listened to Colosseum Live more than any other album in my 70 yrs. Still exhilarating. "Don't start chasing...." is more true for me now than then. Wonderful band.
As primarily a guitarist I was totally floored by Clem's solo on Valentyne Suite; the sound, the touch and feeling. And then I got it; the whole band is like that; the dynamics.
No backing tracks, no auto-tune. Just 5 highly accomplished musicians and a powerful vocalist who gel perfectly. Add the wonderful sound of a well-played Hammond. Perfect!
I adore them! Since 1971! I've got your "Colosseum Live" and Valentine Suite. No other bands like This! One of the more ❤️ underrated and misful of the planet! Love forever!
Privileged to have been at Manchester University in 1970/71 when this was recorded for Colosseum Live. Jon Hiseman was the greatest. I've never known another drummer to "lead" the music in such a talented group of musicians.
Lucky to have seen them last week in Tel Aviv , only 3 survivors from the original band but my god they sound great and still one of the best progressive jazz rock band i ever listened
@@henryrogers5500 Did you ever listen to „Colosseum Live“ (The one with the guy in a yellow shirt writing the title on a wall)? That’s where Clem really shines. And I’m saying that as a huge fan of Humble Pie.
@@fideliusconcrete4871 Hello Fid, I’ve seen that album on UA-cam. I will have to give it a listen. Thanks for the suggestion. When “Smokin’” first came out, I think it was in ‘72, my buddy had the 8-track tape. Smoked lots of Columbian in those days. What a tone Mr. Clemson had! Fantastic blues/rock guitarist!
@@fideliusconcrete4871. Absolutely agreed. I bought Colosseum Live in 1973 and still have it. I never knew what all the fuss over Eric Clapton was about after hearing Dave Clemson.
I saw them in 71. A very small venue in Bremen Germany. It was a cinema. Maybe 250 people. Chris was catching a cold and couldn't sing after 30 min. Jon Hiseman: Chris's voice is nearly gone. So they played without him for about 1.15h The last time I saw them unfortunately without DIck Heckstall Smith because he passed away RIP with Barbara Thompson on Saxes in Worpswede near Bremen in a full packed venue (Music Hall) Both gigs were unbelievable. More I cannot say. For me this music stood the test of time and it will further on
It's hard for me to put my finger on the elusive quality that makes Colloseum so unique. Is it Chris Farlowe's hoarse, black voice? Or the distinctive Spanish flavour of the melodies? Or Heckstall-smith playing 2 saxophones together? Or the clever passages from forte to piano + change of rythm? It must be a synergy of all those together. I'm a fan since 1971 or so, with long intervals though, but every once in a while, I' gripped by an irresistible need to listen to them again. Maybe to remember my youth, maybe because their music went deep under my skin and is ageless.
Excellent concert. BTW, I found a really eccentric but quite enjoyable cover version of The Road She Walked Before by a band called UNIT. It appeared in my 'recommended' videos feed. They changed the title to The Road and added a strange middle section but it works (sort of). Type UNIT The Road Andy Martin to find it, if you're interested. It's great to know these ancient jazz rockers continue to influence contemporary groups.
The Colosseum is the best that has happened in rock music. The rest, although also great, such as Allman Brathers Band or Wishbone Ash, is a bit lower. And "Valentyne Suite" is a real masterpiece
Quite interesting that no-one approached Dave to ask him to get rid of the toy piano and grab a Fender Rhodes, or the sound engineer to stop killing the drums with the gate-compression. But it was the mid 90's... so sad as playing is perfect
I worked in the Youth Court for a while and one day a lady came in with a young lad who had got into a bit of bother and was due in court. She gave the lads surname as Clemson. Its not a particularly common name so I said to the boy have you got a relative who plays guitar maybe an uncle or someone. His mom said his grandad plays guitar and has played for various groups. I turned to the boy and said I have got records at home that your grandad plays on and I still listen to them. The lady shoved the lad and said I told you your grandad was a good guitarist. How sad this lad did not know or probably did not care what a talented grandad he had
When it comes to Rock, they were. Hiseman, Baker, etc. When it comes to Jazz, they were / are American. From Elvin Jones to Marcus Gilmore. The best drummer in the world is a deaf woman from Scotland, her name is Evelyn Glennie.
One of the greatest and most overlooked bands in history, no weak links here, their version of Rope Ladder is fantastic.
For me one of the best concerts of all time. I watched it so many times since I'm a little kid. Still love it so much.

Colosseum live 1971, Lost Angeles, amazing performance!!
THE best live album, ever.... without a doubt.

J’ecoutais le live quand j’avais 17 ans,aujourd’hui à 64 ans toujours autant de plaisir...✌️
Jon did what?! 😉
What a voice. Chris Farlowe is such a monumental talent, he bowls me over.
Such a quality band all round . . .
The same perfekt concert in Budapest too. THANKS for the Legends ! (I think the best concert I"ve ever seen.)
SZERVUSZ, ANDRAS. I ALSO LOVE THIS WONDERFUL BAND. gelu batir, romania
Still missing Jon Hiseman. He was the best!

These guys are the best! And we loved them passionately!
And Chris Farlow! A giant of thought...
Thank to share with us this masterpiece concert...

Einmalig...🦋
Saw Chris yesterday in Camden so cool unreal man
I REALLY ENVIE YOU, LOUIE...

Before I read what you stated 2 years ago Davis I was going to write: 'Masters of what they do'. I guess you beat me to it!
Colsseum was perfect 👍👍👍☝😏
Fantastisch!
Say what you want - Clem Clempson is the most underrated guitarist ever!
Why do you say “underrated?” He was the lead guitarist for one of the top bands in the world, Humble Pie!

whats with all the interviews and panning around the audience all the time through Hisemans solo!!!! GRRRRRR!!!!
