Yeah, he's not often mentioned amongst guitar hero folks, but he's fantastic. I never owned a Billy Idol album, but when I was looking at the credits of The Cars' Ric Ocasek's "This Side of Paradise", the song, "True Love" which has a killer classical guitar part, and I saw "Steve Stevens" had played it, I took a pause. Wow. Then came the "Top Gun" soundtrack, and I was sold. The guy is a fantastically talented, original guitar player in many different styles.
It never ceases to amaze me how technically AND theoretically accomplished these guys are in real life. It is so easy to get deflected by the appearances and hoohah. So I just love it when they get to showcase the real musical expertise that underpinned their careers - thanks to all these UA-cam channels that spoil us with their expansive content
Yeah, always love Steve. Not sure what you consider theoretical? I don’t believe he mentioned anything theoretical regarding. But he knows what he wants to play, and how to get a gnarly tone. 😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
He grew up in Far Rockaway part of Queens Ny. He was a childhood friend of a Friend of mine name John that owned Fountains of Paradise Studios in Astoria. I actually hung out with Steve at a video set I worked on In Astoria, an old Movie theater. The video was flesh for fantasy in 83-84.He’s really a stand up guy and a goodfella besides being a Awesome guitar player
Steve Steven's one of the most underrated guitarists of the 80s. Unreal work with Billy Idol. Unique sounds with Robin Trower tone. A great talent and iconic player
3:52 That head shake tells me this guy is truly passionate about his playing.......... He is an utter legend who, is largely unrecognised. I could watch him play all day..............
With Billy Idol, his Blue Highway bridge and then that outrageous solo at the end is absolutely EPIC... best Chuck Berry influenced solo I've EVER heard. Classic. The guy is a monster rhythm stylist, and I think greatly underrated. He demonstrates here he is also a thinking musician as well. Very impressive.
Brings a smile to my face. He has this aura around him of positive person that everyone enjoys just listening as he comes up with something out of the blue. Just fun watching him work. 😊🎉
I knew Steve' in the 80' , Me and my Friend Carlos whent to NAMM at NY in 86 about , Carlos bought a White Hammer mod. Sreve Stevens i belive with Duncan's pick ups with FR. ( he painted a few times ) i didnt heard Steve in a long time , now i found this video and amazed by his sound , technic and gear , he looks younger than he really is ! congrats Brother ! Keep on Rocking ! .
This is like watching the human soul flow through the mind and strings of a dedicated master musician. He doesn’t just play…he can name every bar of influence that taught him.
Just an incredible guitarist! Watched him since the mid80s and 'Boy can he play a guitar' Check out his flamenco work too. He has a hell of a box of tricks in his arsenal. Keep on rockin' 😉
I recall being in a small venue in Seattle. The first act was a heavy metal guitarist who linked up with Heart's ex bassist. He was actually..awesome. However, the audience bood them off the set. Even the primary act, HiFi, that we all came to see, wasat their end. This would be their last gig together. I noted how the music was changing right before our eyes. From heavy guitar solos to more trendy rock. It was now going somewhere completely different. The secondary singer, David, told me he was shifting to a band called the Enemy. To this day I have never heard anything from them. But Seattle was the heart of what we call ' grunge'. THAT was the new direction. Steve, with all his amazing talent and skill, was simply caught up in a change. Don't get me wrong. He is STILL one of my favorites and a fantastic player. But like Bob Dylan said, when castigated for going electric....'they want me to play blowing in the wind ' forever. Doubt that Mozart or Beethoven would be as well received today. Steve, you are GREAT, and AMAZING.
How on earth did I not understand how incredibly skilled Steve Stevens was until now? Amazing, and 1000% not shown for his skill in the slightest. I would love a chance to get a guitar lesson from Steve Stevens. I also wouldn't mind knowing the entire pedal setup to get that sound out of a guitar while both having that perfectly clear tone with distortion.
That was soooooo cool! Thank for both parts! Now I know what I do next, that was most inspiring. Und da die Videos in Frankfurt gemacht wurden: das war SUPER COOL.
I like his sound always have. S Stevens seeks to get the most out of every chord the same as EVH did and many many others creating heavy but still as very melodic. Me too on my level and it has always been an hard task in explaining what I am asking for when it cames to sound/gear. Most guys will say -yeah I got it ROMPF ROMPF ROMPF like an Drill Hammer this one will awake everyone up to two blocks away! Ehhh..yeah right...
One of my lasting impressions of Steve is from a show AP did at Club Soda in Vancouver. Massive hair backlit by smoke and lights for an entrance, and a killer set that included an extremely loud blast of noise as a musical interlude. A formative experience for me lol
The guy is great, it's that simple. Billy is a great front man but without Steve, he'd still be singing in his mirror. Sorry Billy but gotta give credit where credit is due.
A lot like Mick Mars but a bit more finesse. Did a fantastic job on The Sweets song Set Me Free. He put that mother on nitrous and steroids. Like to see Steve’s interpretation of Painters , Goin’ Down The Road!
@@geneevans7885 I totally agree. I was referring to stage presence. Not flamboyant just hammer it out. But yes , a much better guitarist on all counts!
. Have you seen the Rebel Yell era of his playing. Even the MTV '84 New Years show, the Rebel Yell video, the Top Gun video. I've seen Stevens 3-4x and he's a bigger stage showman than Billy Idol..the ultimate stage cool and charisma!!!
This dude deserves way more respect and recognition than he gets
Who doesn't recognize him ?! ;-) He is up there among the Gods? in the eyes of most guitarists

Have always loved his playing and style !!
Take a good look and listen , because he’s one of the last of the Classic era of Rock N Roll Guitarists living…..
Keep Rocking, Steve
Absolutely and well stated. Current generations have no idea about this and what they are missing.
Have you ever listened to Vince Neal’s solo album?
Before you laugh , check it out- SS wrote the whole album , basically- some of his best work , IMO
Steve Stevens is one of the BEST Guitar Legends still rocking in the world! Unbelievable talent and class!
Truly an awesome guitarist. Such an amazing sound.
Musicians always inspire, esp when honest and reasonably humble like SStevens.

One of my favorite songs and videos. You were there for the filming??
Yes I was lucky enough to be there till early morning the next day!
Truly one of rocks underrated guitarists and a super nice guy ..
Not sure why your saying he's under rated. Everyone knows he's Kik Azz. Many other guitarists talk highly about him.
nope... back in his younger years he was so fcukin arrogant and widely known as an amazing guitar player... so he was not underrated at all
@@MattRamsey-p7v We were all dicks to some extent in our youth... You wise up as you get older

Great musician and a very kind human being as it seems👌
one of the most humble musician ever, he controls his guitar with finess.
My favorite....Steve is a legend!!!!!!
He's a superb player and master tone-smith, without doubt one of the best at both.

Love the flamenco work you have done! Need more brother! Peace.
OMG that tone is insane!

Saw him in Atlanta in 1984 or 85...He's one of the best. Was then and is today.
Six Flags senior night 1984
He said, " those guys are masters at it." SO are you Steve, so are you.
Definitely

Love his style the way he presents himself his look all black even his nails. AWESOME
Man .. I love that Steve Howe connection ... who would expect that
One of the most UNDER-RATED guitarists ever! Steve deserves much more respect and accolades. A true master with humility and simplicity!
what a great guy and player - I highly respect Steve for his style and tones, to have a beer with him would be a dream

Love Steve since 1983... Rebel Yell !!!!
The great Steve Stevens!!!!!
Grew up on Billy Idol...wouldn't have had the sound if it wasn't for Steve. Always loved the solo in Eyes without a face.
There’s the whole show😎😎😎

what a great sound he gets out of his gear. Not too muddy or trebly; it’s just right..
Sooooo good
I could listen to Steve all day. Fascinating and insightful. He's the opposite to Nigel Tufnell of Spinal tap
Thats got to be one of the best tones ive heard

Can you imagine drinkin' with Steve and Billy Idol? Your jaws would be hurting from laughing and smilin'. Fuckin' Legends man.
Steve is an amazing player, with Billy Idol and also with Sebastian Bachs solo album.
This guy's speech is very consistent, dense. It conveys credibility.
Simply the best!
His work with Bozzio and Levin! Superb stuff❤
Respect!

One of the greatest to ever pick up the guitar. Listen and learn kids

Wow. TX Steve ❤
Steve's older than me, but I look old enough to be his dad! Cool guy. Very talented.
So underrated.
What a GUITAR PLAYER.........!!!!!!!!!!! 😜
I love him Steve Stevens
He really impressed me a lot in the Vince Neil solo record, exposed. Shreddy and metal yet original.
Lot of people have no ideas his behind the great intro Top Gun
I wouldn't disagree with a part 3. Or a part 197 for that matter.
Great Guitar Player 💪
Wow!... he is as good as the mighty Robin Trower.

The great Gary Moore said that Steve could get a good sound out of his equipment, so that’s good enough for me to think Steve is good.
He’s good regardless of what Gary Moore said fool
@ ok mr know it all
bro is a real one
what is the music he is playing at 8:15?
Not 100% sure but it's similar to Hank Williams Sr or Joe Pass
Even though Vince Neal's solo album was a flop - his riffs and solos are Killer on Vince Neal Exposed.
Dude is great at improv. Just plays whatever the F he wants. He is a guitar wizard
Virtuoso !
Стив ты супер
