I think it's cuz he didn't write on any of the songs he's well known for. Plus he's one of the unlucky musicians that was hot during the 80s synthesizer craze. That stuff didn't evolve or influence.
One of my favorite videos on you tube is rebel yell, where Stevens uses all of the moves of an air guitar rock star while playing his creative licks. I’m 70 and will never grow out of loving classic rock, hard rock and metal. Stevens is up there with Page, EVH, SRV, & Duane Allman IMO. interesting that he retains his NYC accent despite all his years in SoCal
Steve Stevens is so UNDERRATED ... it's criminal - the stuff/styles he can play "on the fly" is amazing - just search for his guitar solos LIVE , here on UA-cam . He's a great songwriter too .... his solo stuff, Billy Idol's material ..... Billy Idol , undoubtedly, would NEVER have lasted as long as he has without Steve's creative input & writing - THAT is a FACT !
What a great guy, especially for a living legend. He's super humble and he listens to questions and is engaged in the conversation the whole time, never once seeming irritated or disconnected from a topic or question
What a great down to earth interview. He let the star talk. Steve truly loves the guitar and that really comes across. Interviewer did an amazing job being quiet.
What a humble man. Idolised Idol back in the 80's- Steve was always there of course. In the background, but not really. So great to hear him speak on his extensive career way on down the track.
To me Steve Stevens has always been a silent sidekick, who does his work really well. I know all his solo projects. A hidden gem I would say, I wish him all the best.
Steve Stevens is one of the best power rock guitarists we have today. Billy Idol would not have such Great Awe Inspiring songs, without Steve on Guitar backing him up. This is just a simple fact. My Respects. RH DSD
Neither would Steve Stevens be as famous if not for his collaboration with Billy Idol. The two are great alone but together they are phenomenal. Bromance made in heaven.
Thank you for those final words, Steve. I'm a beginning guitarist in my 50's. Your words inspire me to keep trying when there is so little time, because I love music and the guitar.🎸🎸🎸
I'm not a guitar player at all but I really enjoyed hearing him talk about it. He seems like a really down to Earth guy with amazing skills! Makes me appreciate him even more after seeing him last night with Billy in Vienna! Rock on Steve!
He's up there with Michael Schenker and George Lynch on the list of most innovative and underrated guitarists. I never thought about Billy Idol's music thoroughly, but it's indeed quite a feat to take such basic music like Punk and transforming it into catchy and powerful rock riffs. Working with the most simple of things is the hardest part. Cheers from Brasil
Watching this video as just saw a UA-cam video posted 2 weeks ago from WXPN- Billy Idol -free at noon concert. It’s an acoustic presentation and both Steve and Billie are phenomenal! They absolutely killed it! Steve is an excellent musician! Rock on Steve!
When I first heard him at the age of 3 in '84 and also later in life, Steve blows my mind away to this day!!! Best guitar solos in history ever!!! Listen to him!!!
I could listen to him tell his story for hours. I was and always will be a Steve Stevens fan and this interview only reinforces that - monster musician and down to earth guy...what an innovator. Thanks so much Steve for all of it.
Steve is one of the greatest modern Rock players.... highly underrated and yet has contributed so much to the craft. He is adventurous, unique and highly passionate about his music. There is very little guitar stuff he cannot play and make interesting - yep - we are fans ;-)
Steve Stevens is one of my favourite rock guitarists. Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell' is my favourite 80's album Steve played on. Made travelling a little easier.
Passion is everything! He's such a talented guy and loves doing it. Not everyone finds their groove in life, and he seems like a real down to earth smart guy. Steve I've seen you live a few times in Reno and you always blew me away!! Great interview man!
It's really great to hear someone talk about what they truly love to do, and obviously Stevens not only loves to play, but he loves it so much that he likes sharing his pleasure with the rest of us. Making the interview even better is the fact that if you took away the rock trappings (hair, nails, lip ring, etc.) he'd be just a normal New York guy -- open, friendly, and average (except for his otherworldly musical skills).
I met him at the meet & greet at The Capitol Theater show on 9.22.21 for a NY minute cause they gave us the covid rush...but in that minute Steve came across as such a nice friendly guy. I'm from Queens, he grew up in Queens, he is still that guy from the neighborhood who loves playing the guitar. Billy, on the other hand, seemed a bit uptight & not very friendly. Oh well.
The words great talent which is synonymous with the name Steve Stevens has and always be a true representation of the love of playing guitar above all else. The feelings you get and the challenge it imposes on the player in the pursuit of mastery and expression are only known by those who have embarked on the journey of guitar playing. Steve shows genuinely how excited about playing even if he would never achieve fame. Playing is done out of pure love and enjoyment first and foremost, everything else is a bonus, that's true passion. Rock on Steve, man you are a real inspiration.
Great reading all the positive comments, couldn't agree more. This guy is an unbelievable guitar player and a seriously nice human being, what a treat for the world of music. It's great that amongst serious guitar fans he is right up there with the best, easily up there with Federer, Djokovic or Nadal. :) He's an incredible man, just watching him talk you can see the humility and grace. * * * * *
Everyone who comments on Steve Stevens says he is underrated - which seems weird that so many people appreciate how good he is, but....... he is underrated! He comes across as a very humble down to earth guy too.
I always loved Steve for his musicianship within a "punk" type context (ok, Billy Idol's solo stuff isn't quite punk in comparison to GenX). Finding out years later that he loved 70s prog was just the icing on the cake. One of my favorite all time musicians.
I had a cult for this guy when I was a teenager. He was nowhere to be seen, all you could do was listen to his guitar, with those incredible alien-like sound you couldn't hear anywhere else, and be amazed and terrified at the same time by his look. He was surrounded by mistery. I came close to believing he was a goddamn creature from outer space. Now thanks to UA-cam, I can listen to him talking for the first time in 30 years and realize he's a normal guy. Until he picks up his guitar, that is, and reverts to being an alien. I'm an adult now, and still part of me keeps thinking this guy is supernatural. He should have some cult developed around him, man. Count me in.
Stevie Salas has an amazing story too, basically the guy went from being homeless to playing stadiums with Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger on a 12 months interval
Great interview and one of my most favorite guitar players. Thank you for this video and thanks to Steve for for some of the most blazing balls out rock ever.
Steve is a very genuine and generous guy. He has taken the time to talk about his music journey on many occasions. He’s happy to share his knowledge and tips. Thank you very much Steve.
Amazing interview that is candid, straight from the hip and accurate. It's awesome to hear his timeline and what it took to be what he is today. Any kid out there that is thinking of making this choice and commitment in life should really listen to this interview. My son decided this at 12yrs old, and it is absolutely essential that you are always supportive and there for them. Sometimes they will get discouraged, and it's up to you to keep them focused and share in their accomplishments.
So, Steve knows and appreciate Opeth's work, what a nice thing to read, he's one of my all time favorite guitar players along with Mikael Akerfeldt \m/
Saw Billy Idol live in 2010, and was lucky enough to get front stage about 10 feet from Steve. He was chain smoking, lighting one cigarette from the last. His guitar cage was near us, and we could see him and his guitar tech changing out guitars between songs. He had about 40 guitars in there, and it was amazing to see. I was happy as hell to see both Billy and Steve, and think Steve is a much better guitarist than he was when he and Billy first hooked up 30 years ago. Hope to see them again
I’ve not heard Steve talking before. His love of the music comes through and the fact that he’s very appreciative of other musicians. He’s a good sort eh?
Steve is a fantastic guitarist, hugely underrated!! This man is brilliant, an absolute master. Steve is so humble about his Grammy award giving kudos to the melody and not his incredible guitar licks, what a nice guy.
Along with Earl Slick, one of the most underated players ever.....Saw Steve play in Vince Neil's band while supporting Van Halen back in the 90's, he smokes !
When he was talking about "locking in" with the drummer, thats what i've always said about Micky Dee, he really locks in with the guitarst, real tight, fast and hard. I wonder which drummer Steve would like to play with
Bozzio Levin Stevens "Situation Dangerous" is a stunningly good album. Check it out. From this album I learned what a diverse player Stevens is-from balls to the wall to falling in love music, everything in between. He is colossally talented.
for me he is one of the finest guitar players ever. he has a history too, even the cover sleeve of atomic playboys was designed and created by the awesome H.R.GIGER
I doubt it's as widely known as it should be, but this dude is one of THE best guitarists EVER!
John - Orbiter agree
John - Orbiter that is.
MICK RONSON TOO !
I think it's cuz he didn't write on any of the songs he's well known for. Plus he's one of the unlucky musicians that was hot during the 80s synthesizer craze. That stuff didn't evolve or influence.
yep he is one of the best
Such a great guy... So normal, so friendly, despite his huge talent and carreer.. An example to all, especially younger people..
Billy Idol owes this guy, his music was at it's best with Steve Stevens doing guitar
@@SuperDonnaWanna I get the impression Billy knows where the dues are owed. And Mr Stevens too.
Really, didn't know this. Was Steve his first guitarist? Who's Idol's other guitarist?
It’s called synergy! They kill it together!
@@Hundert1 yes he was
That’s one of the best wigs of all time, too.
Billy Idol and Steve were a perfect match. Great music

Here we have the real thing. Absolute talent, low key ego. His guitar solos are mesmerizing.
Steve Stevens is so UNDERRATED ... it's criminal - the stuff/styles he can play "on the fly" is amazing - just search for his guitar solos LIVE , here on UA-cam .

Steve is well respected in the music industry.
Les deux se complètent très bien.
He seems like one helluva nice guy. I'm glad he made it.
He really is a nice guy!
I love hearing this guy talk. Great player and down to Earth. Nice interview!
Steve Stevens is very underrated
Very!!
Adam Roslon Not the slightest!Anyone that knows about rock music and guitar playing knows that Steve is great and thats all that matters.
I thought he was highly rated.
Just a bit!?
AGREE!
Steve is just a class act...one of the nicest and best musicians out there. Great interview and so inspiring to watch!
Steve Stevens, One of the very best and most talented guitarists, PERIOD!! Humble as hell, love this guy!!

To me Steve Stevens has always been a silent sidekick, who does his work really well. I know all his solo projects. A hidden gem I would say, I wish him all the best.
You said it!
I just love this guy. Could listen to him telling stories for a week.

Billy agrees with you...
I agree
awesome player and nice guy
There are thousands of great guitar players age 12.... Now ☝️Billy was unique
Neither would Steve Stevens be as famous if not for his collaboration with Billy Idol. The two are great alone but together they are phenomenal. Bromance made in heaven.
What a phenomenal guitar player. Never realized how talented he is and his range. Blown away watching him play Billy Idol Unplugged. Wow!
Mr Stevens is very articulate and a joy to hear him talk.

But he is lil bit underrated.

Awesome guitarist and very honest, accessible and humble.
His work on Vince Neil's 'Exposed' album was mind-blowing! Thanks for the riffs and unworldly solos Steve!
