Everybody wants to drift the corners, ha kids, I used to drift straight lines! You ain't lived until you've gone a straight mile sideways 😎. Cheers 🍻.
I had a base model V6 '84, and it would go sideways in the rain. Then I swapped in a small block with a Holley Street Dominator, 625cfm AFB, Accel ignition, headers, DynoMax Turbo II exhaust, and a 700r4 out of a GTA. (NO body mods, for the sleeper effect.) And don't you normally have to cut the fenders to match the fender flares, because the point of it is to allow full range of bigger tires that are installed on the wheel?
6 second on a road coarse or autocross is huge. Thing about how much money it takes to go from running 12’s to running 6’s same in a quarter mile. It’s still a 6 second gain but you’re looking at way more than 15k to get there.
@@billymanilli it isn’t though, also they would have gained far more than 6 seconds had they put on an actual competitive tire and used an actual manual transmission.
It's a base model. 170hp, dime a dozen. The only thing special is the heritage package, but it's literally just stripes and a couple of badges. The 92 Z28s are pretty rare, I wouldnt want to mess up one of those. But an RS base model? Who cares?
They could've just put coilovers, swaybars, and wheels and tires on it and had the same outcome. Easy to still keep original, but I don't fault anyone for doing what they want to their cars
The whole thing doesn't quite work does it? The tire and rim package looks like it's for a low rider. The front wind dam looks weird with the truck like ride height on the side skirts. Also why do you need a front air dam on a short course? Wouldn't it work better on a circle track with a full aero package? It's just seems half assed. Also the hood makes no sense on this kind of rig. Maybe a dragster where looking over your hood doesn't matter, and if you're afraid of losing grip on the front why have that scoop messing up your aero? I'm just confused all the way around. I'd like to see this car done in a proper aero package and proper wheels and tires. I'm no expert, but I'm confused all the way around on this mess.
you are confused cuz its badass. great build for people to do at home with simple materials a regular guy can do. and its not just for autocross, this is perfect for trackdays which is what a regular guy would do. get it now?
You are correct. Adding power, adding weight, making it wider - all these things are bad for an autocross car. Oh and BTW have you ever tried to run an autocross in the Modifieds class that this would have to run in? This thing doesnt have a chance to win any autocross. Dont get me wrong, they made it better, just not aimed at autocrossing.
worst part is that they took this car right out of the classes in which it might have been competitive. It might do OK in Classic American Muscle but that's really just for guys with Vettes to show off. Just noticed, they replaced the craptastic rear end with another GM small 10-bolt instead of going to the bigger 8.5" 10 bolt. Whoever ends up with this car, fair warning: you're gonna be replacing that. Also, wtf with no subframe ties? That would have given you all the rigidity you need in the chassis AND given you something much more solid to attach your roll cage to.
I currently run in CAM and I don’t see this car being competitive. There isn’t enough Rearend adjustability compared to what most folks are doin to their cars, the automatic needs to be swapped for a TKX or Magnum, and they did nothing for weight savings except for ditching the AC so it’s going to be on the heavy side for CAM-T. Plus it needs better tires.
@@Matt_Lanzer_13 the 8.8 or a 9" would be good too if you're building it for drag racing. I mentioned the 8.5 because they came in earlier Camaros and have the correct bolt pattern and will be the right width. They're essentially GM's copy of the Dana 44, and for this car its plenty strong. There are any number of lockers and limited slip units available. It should come with 30 spline axles and in stock form, will more than handle the motor in this car. It will be fine even with a set of slicks or road race tires.
"If you dream it, they can build it!" Okay, well I'm dreaming of a station wagon Cadillac CTS-V with a manual Magnum TR-6060 transmission and Duramax LBZ (with a DPF!)...
If you're gonna Duramax swap it start with a base Cadillac CTS wagon. Why pay the extra for the V version if you're gonna remove the most expensive part of the package?
@@mikecheslock3542 because the CTS-V has a brakes and suspension package for the race track: six piston Brembo calipers with larger rotors up front, four piston Brembo calipers in the back and the magnetorheological suspension, which measures every inch of the road 1,000 times per second and automatically stiffens or softens the suspension based on conditions.
Seriously. They put in what is probably a $6,000 transmission and then slapped a basic ass carb onto the LS. Not to mention the plywood and garden edging front splitter and the $20 eBay fender flares. WTF
that was honestly the worst part of the build for me. Why even bother putting a nice LS motor in it just to stick a dinosaur fuel system on top. He says it came from the tuner that way, guessing the tuner is some boomer who cant handle "that there fancy new fuel injector system with all its computers"
It just dawned on me that both hosts look almost exactly the same. Like older and younger versions of the same guy. Kinda got that father and son vibe goin on.
I bet they could have picked up the same 6-7 seconds without the horrendous aero kit and wider track that required the terrible fenders. Could have accomplished the same thing without butchering a 25th anniversary car.
These guys had it really rough... Working with a lift, a trans jack, engine hoist, wobble sockets, cordless impact, etc. I feel lucky to have ramps to pull onto,....
When they added the front fender flares, My opinion would have been to remove the factory fenders & either the front clip or at least the ground effects & used aftermarket parts to cut into preserving the original body!!!
You know that these cars aren't ever going to be worth much right? They made a metric ton of them so who cares what they do to them. This is coming from a guy who loves thirdgens and owns two of them.
This might be the most American thing I have ever watched on UA-cam... from the car to the editing to the music... FREEEEEDOM! That Rockauto website looks like it was made in the 90's!! HAHA
I was expecting rebuilds and mods to compliment the car. New suspension kit is the only reasonable thing that happened imo. I imagine that engine could be rebuilt and modified to make ~200whp which would have livened the car up plenty for autocross and keep it daily drivable. Wider tires are a must with stiffer suspension, sure, but you don't need race car wide tires. Probably could have ran 265/40/R17, stayed in the profile of the car, and not have had to hack up the body. Plenty of lateral grip and contact patch for the car's footprint. Swap out the auto for a contemporary 5 speed with that 3.77 rear end and it would have breathed amazing new life into the car and let it keep its identity. It's not even a 3rd gen Camaro anymore with all the changes. Might as well just have sold it and bought a 5th or 6th gen instead.
I have an 84 Z28 and I loved everything you guys did except the cutting of the fenders and quarters, but I understand the reasoning to do this for auto cross build. Im sure she will scream while she's sticking to the pavement!👍

At 32:30 I like to add a third trick and it's an old method I've used for years especially when people tell us "the vehicle has gears" before we purchase... 1. Raise the Rear up(both sides) 2. Make a mark on the driveshaft 3. Starting from 12:00 position of the wheel, start spinning it while watching the line you made on the driveshaft As you spin, the mark will wrap around once and again...etc. Keep slowly spinning and counting the wraps of the line until you make one full revolution. You will get pretty close to what your gear ratio is.
They did all that work and never fixed the most common problem with GMs of that era, the steering column. Amateurs. There was so much cringe in this build, I hope the sponsors read this.

I've seen IROC-Z's with t-tops that handled as well without all that extra junk drilled into the body.
just use a 2x4 for a splitter lkol,mnjkolk,amnshjdgik@!
I guess you don't understand aerodynamics.
Aww man, you guys to took a classic and turned it into a hoopty! I think this generation Camaro is still my favorite, I had 2 of them in my younger years. One daily driver RS and one street/strip Berlinetta. I've never driven a car that was easier to put sideways and keep it sideways. Everybody wants to drift the corners, ha kids, I used to drift straight lines! You ain't lived until you've gone a straight mile sideways 😎.
Cheers 🍻.
Reasons why you can get your own channel, car, and build one how you want😁
I had a base model V6 '84, and it would go sideways in the rain. Then I swapped in a small block with a Holley Street Dominator, 625cfm AFB, Accel ignition, headers, DynoMax Turbo II exhaust, and a 700r4 out of a GTA. (NO body mods, for the sleeper effect.) That thing would go sideways without even asking for it! LoL
thats a powerslide, not a drift...boomer
I had a couple of them too! loved them!!
The poor ol 3rd gens didn’t have any get up and go from the factory but you could add some go faster parts & a couple suspension parts, then you could outrun about anything on the road back then.
I’m building an 83 Z28 right now, that dog of a 305 is being replaced by a 350 4 bolt main 383 stroker.
@@dragoonTT Heck yeah man, that’ll give that ol’ girl a lot more get up & go! You probably already did this but just incase be sure to get a locker or a posi gear set for the rear end. The crappy stock limited slip junk will put ya in a guardrail or over a hill somewhere lol, I found that out the hard way about 20 years ago. I got a short wheelbase, single cab, step side, 2wd, 5 speed manual, ‘95 Chevy truck now with a Blueprint Engines 383 stroker in it. My truck is heavy & it still runs great! A 383 stroker in your 3rd gen will be a beast!! Good luck keepin traction, & back tires.🤘🏼
My first car was a 88 Z28 - had a whopping 152hp from that 305 lol. I got my license right around when the import tuning scene was huge so I was constantly getting trounced by those. They would want to race because my car looked mean, and sounded great but oooooh boy the lack luster get up and go and the one wheel peel made for a lot of losses haha. I really should rebuild that thing with a ls and turbo.
@@dragoonTT Had an 89 IROC where we put a 383 in it. I miss that car so much.
Except fox bodies lol.
This is some criminal BS. They should've made those mods on a Camaro already in need of some bodywork. That car was relatively clean. They should rename the show 'Hacks', because that is all they do.
Agreed!!! That spoiler!!! 🤢 Those wheels and fender flares!!!🤢 They ruined a pretty solid car. I’m all for customizing, and not saying people shouldn’t add personal touches or performance upgrades. But they made this car hideous and seemed to have no rhyme or reason for what they were doing.
It’s vehicular manslaughter
Bro it’s a third gen, chill out there’s abt a million more
Gatekeeping a 2k$ car?
Yeah they doubled the HP supposedly but didn't shave a full 10 seconds off there track time even with good tires. But before it was barely running on 5 cylinders? These guys suck ass.
Nothing like WRONG science regarding splitter and spoiler aerodynamics for our entertainment.
And crap workmanship for the bonus.
RIGHT? these guys have no understanding of downforce, lift or aerodynamics whatsoever.... I HONESTLY cannot believe that nobody on the production team caught this, even if these 2 guys are clueless...

Don’t really know but i bet theres like $15k on parts alone on this build for a 6 second gain? Wow! 😯
6 second on a road coarse or autocross is huge. Thing about how much money it takes to go from running 12’s to running 6’s same in a quarter mile. It’s still a 6 second gain but you’re looking at way more than 15k to get there.

I know, this was abuse and hard to watch. Or just swap the motor. But WHY ..

I'm no expert, but I'm confused all the way around on this mess.
you are confused cuz its badass. great build for people to do at home with simple materials a regular guy can do. and its not just for autocross, this is perfect for trackdays which is what a regular guy would do. get it now?
@@supersevenn nah this is lazy cheap nasty work
You are correct.
@@supersevenn its all geared towards their sponsors. But as a boulevard racer its ok
295s fit without cutting
worst part is that they took this car right out of the classes in which it might have been competitive.
I wouldn’t even do an 8.5... they’re hard to come by and have smaller aftermarket. I’d just do an 8.8 or a 9 inch
Given they put UTQG 340 tires on it, this car would get roasted by an STR miata lol
This project was really cool until they installed those super dumb fender flares.

I really wish they would stop sticking carbs on ls engines

As someone who autocrossed for years, this is pretty much in line with what I would have done, definitely not hacking up the body on a limited model
To see it done right, have a look at DSE's version, it makes this one truly look like a kindergardener thought it up.
I really wish that they had used something other than an actual Z03. I had one about 15 years ago except mine had the 350 and all the trimmings.

There was build a while back where they went wide body only they added 2 inches in the front and I think 3 out back to the existing lines. Looked stock and didn't at the same time. It was all at the top of each body section so the midline of the car had a bit more of a shelf look. SERIOUSLY sexy. Gave her some hips. Do you guys have a very short barber?
They cut each others hair at the same time while 69ing each other.
At 32:30 I like to add a third trick and it's an old method I've used for years especially when people tell us "the vehicle has gears" before we purchase...
1. Raise the Rear up(both sides)
2. Make a mark on the driveshaft
3. Starting from 12:00 position of the wheel, start spinning it while watching the line you made on the driveshaft
As you spin, the mark will wrap around once and again...etc. Keep slowly spinning and counting the wraps of the line until you make one full revolution. You will get pretty close to what your gear ratio is.
yup.. or on an open diff, spin one wheel 2 times while holding the other side still (or leaving it on the ground)
They did all that work and never fixed the most common problem with GMs of that era, the steering column. Amateurs. There was so much cringe in this build, I hope the sponsors read this.
...but that's so much work to spend 10 minutes to get to, and tighten the 4 bolts!
On a serious note.. yes, I agree. That was REALLY sad to watch them butcher that poor Camaro like that
If you can dream it we can build it."
Late 60's Chev 4-door, crew cab, El Camino, 4x4.
I have seen a wagon, but all they did was chop the roof off the back, and it doesn't look right.
If you notice the wagon and the 4 door has the same angle on the back door and window as the El Camino.
So take a wagon or 4-door, chop the back end off, and attach the box from an El Camino.
