  • Join us for a wrap-up of our three-part series on crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a Gunboat 68. It's an informal discussion filmed while en route from Antigua to our next job in Martinique. The usual trade winds had disappeared and we thought it would be a good opportunity to debrief and share our thoughts on boat set up and performance. We had lots of questions from this video series and the vast majority were clearly from viewers wanting to understand more about how these performance multihulls operate.

    Great summary of the delivery. I find myself really liking your videos because I disagree with a few things you say, but then that gives me pause and I say to myself “hmmm this guy knows a hell of a lot more than me, so maybe i should rethink my position”. Good stuff, hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season!

      That is really good to hear. The purpose of the channel is to educate and get people thinking about sailing and operating their boat for maximum performance. You don't have to agree with everything we say as long as we get you thinking about it. There are a million ways to get your boat from A to B. Just some ways are better than others.

    Great Channel. My new favourite. Just a wealth of knowledge on this channel and specially their website. Very cool discovery.

    I sail an old long keel traditional yacht. Patience is the number one thing I tell guests, we don't get anywhere in hurry, chill out. I sailed Shearwater cats, marine ply, in Bermuda in the late sixties, before hobbies. I sent a year there teaching dingy sailing. At seventy I would love to try a big performance cat one day but without a lottery win that is not likely. Thanks for giving the rest of us a taste.

      Our eldest boy, Ayden, loves those long keel traditional yachts. It's a different type of sailing but still immensely enjoyable.

    No clutches on sheets! Gold right there. Always gold from you guys. Now...appease the rudder gods however they wish! See you out there.

      😁😁 Looking forward to seeing that mystery boat of yours guys.
      And yes you are right, we better make some sort of offering to the rudder gods 🤔

    Hi! Thanks for the explanation on the rudder box, it became clearer now how superior it is. My best!

    Looking forward to the carbon chainplates video. Thanks for explaining about taking the furling sails down -> totally makes sense that the furler lines are not in a clutch

    it'd be great to have you guys compare the Gunboat 68 and the HH 66...in terms of both performance and comfort.

      yes, we've had a lot of people asking this. Those two boats are very different animals. We will have to do a video about it

    Great video, I love the look of the gunboat. I heard you mention that you can become a professional crew member how do you go about this ?. I would be very interested in this.
    Thanks in advance

    Would you recommend kick-up rudders on a performance cat? Not trying to imply that kick-up rudders would safeguard the rudders from damage, but it should help reduce destructive damage.
    Looking forward to seeing how you modified, and vastly improved the chain plates.

    Was that your asym flying from the windward hull around 5:10 in the video? I would love to know more about how to sail deep angles with an asym. Thank you for the great videos!

      Yes it was. Have you seen our transatlantic crossing on Paikea videos? There are several videos where we talk about sail set up, dagger board placement etc.

    A boat like this size, speed and cost should have an OSCAR on board, probably you guys could have avoided the UFO with OSCAR.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому +2

      We use OSCARS on board the IMOCAS and they are only good if the object is near the surface in front of the boat. It's a cool concept but there is only a small set of circumstances where they will work. It doesn't see that far in front so if you are moving at speed it can still be difficult to avoid a collision.

      I'm assuming it's the Vesconite rudder pivot system by Thorne Design, search for that, there's 3D drawings of it on the Vesconite website. Gunboat's website has an article about the 68's steering system and says the "Cassette and blade turn in a fixed bucket" like the Vesconite rudder pivot.

    • @youngbarnacles
      @youngbarnacles  Рік тому

      No it's a Gunboat one not an off-the-shelf design

    Gday guys, I can't see why anyone would use a rudder box rudder system when you can use a cassette style underhung rudder. With a cassette with a nice fuse you don't break rudders. My rudders don't even get wet between sails as I pivot them up reducing wear and electrolysis on the mooring. You could even adust pitch to get more or less balance with a bit of design nous. So no breaking foils, so you don't need to carry spares, no surface piercing foils so better steering. Rudder boxes seem really dumb to me for an offshore cat, former Tornado and dinghy sailor here.

      Agreed, however you are talking about a €10mil cat that still needs to look cool. Having rudder blades sticking 2m out the back of the boat while the owner tries to step on board is not ideal. The other issue is that kick up rudders will not actually meet the design brief as the boats need to be able to navigate shallow waters with rudders half way up. Plus with the cartridge systems I've seen if you have some rudder angle and you hit something you are back at square one with damaging the rudder and boat.
      It should also be noted that the Gunboat rudders are not surface piercing.
      The IMOCA 60s that we have dealt with in the past have fantastic kick up rudder systems and personally I'd go down that route as an option however it doesn't work well with these multihulls.

    As much as your mods really make your catamaran more desirable than the average you should consider buying a Gunboat they are faster and more spacious for your family.

      If we could afford a Gunboat we wouldn't be doing all the mods to ours 🤣🤣

    During the trip, there were many signs the boat isn't wearing well. There were gouges visible on the edge of the hard top. The obviuos cracking around the edge of the deck by the winches is extremely worrying. I wound not expact defects like that on ANY new boat, let alone a multimillion Euro caramaran! So what's going on? I was particularly affected as Gunboat is my fav builder.

      ?????? you may have to take some screen shots of what you saw as I am not aware of any of these things you have mentioned. I am a composites specialist and my colleague on board has also built many America's Cup boats etc. We would have noticed if there was a problem.

    • @davidhendrie6935
      @davidhendrie6935 Рік тому

      Yes. There was a continuous crack right round the edge of the forward cockpit from the port side steps, round in front of port winch, past the mast foot all the way past the s'board winch to the starboard steps. There were also radial cracks from under the port winch to the edge of the deck. I'll do a screenshot and send it to your web address email. Thanks for your reply and your channel. I'm assimilating your amazing knowledge into the refit of my own cat!

      I think you may be referring to the protective tape around that area to keep the ropes from burning the paint

      Ah! That would explain it! I am SO relieved! I just couldn't see a Gunboat having such issues. I think a proper 'rubbing strip' would give a more finished look 'tho. Your videos are fantastic! I've been subscribed since last summer, when I was with a friend helping him sail his Corsair F31 from Barra to Oban here in Scotland. We were at anchor one night and chatting about laminating carbon, and he put on the videos about making your compression beam and longeron. Amazing! You've helped me so much with the rebuild of my own cat, as well as how I can be a better sailor! 😀
