  • Here are the Von Trapp kids and Captain Von Trapp,(Christopher Plummer), singing “The Hills Are Alive” in THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965). When I tell you guys this scene gets me every time, I mean it. There’s just so much meaning behind it and it’s such a beautiful scene. It will never NOT make me cry. 💕 •

To me this was the moment that the tide turned in Maria’s favor. This was the game changer. The captain finally saw the good that Maria had done. To me through the children it was his dead wife finally saying it’s ok to love again and to love the children and it’s ok to live again. He finally saw the children as the children and finally let them back in his heart. When they are singing this song this is it this is when they show they are vulnerable and wearing their heart on their sleeves and the captin finally lets his guard down.

Well I don't know I thought like Captain von trapp was going to like some real way back to the Abbey but I guess Captain von trapp decided decided that he behaved very badly and while I'm Maria brought to music back into his own house but their own house because I thought he wanted to like not sing anymore like and like I didn't want to be a singer like he was a singer like a long time ago we're back in my back is own house for him and his children like his own wife or like maybe like I'm two or three years ago but now since farline Maria brought like the music back into like his house like fire line Maria of her own house too I say everything kind of like went back to normal the normal the singing and the stuff in the dancing again so yes of course about that and that's why I know about it happen but I guess it's already back to normal for like both for farline Maria and for Captain von trap and and for the kids again especially their Uncle Max too in like for Elsa barneshraider to Schrader too Ma'am but I say it was beautiful kind of beautiful to me if the sound of the music like the sound of music that I already like watched on this and plus was kind of like him beautiful and happy and kind of sad for me too I say was great oh yeah man it was great man and ma'am I got to tell you it was good because me and my psychics like by my own psychics the name like Jeffrey gorby and like makai Sherman I like for myself too and like the rest of the other gang of mine to like we're the Christian American Rapper singers to feel like the sound of music full movie to see I say that's about it that's why I know

Honestly knowing it is the first line in the song the captain sings is extremely poetic. Because he was heartbroken over the death of his wife. He realized in that moment what he was doing. By shutting his children out he was running for the hills. And he would frequently run to Vienna, to escape his lonely heart. I’ve always wondered what it was about the song that makes him appear sad. And I think it was that line. Because he realized what he was doing.

That pause, as he stops singing and finally unbends and reaches out to his children....gets me every time. Played to perfection by a man who mostly didn't want the role and was frequently obnoxious or drunk during filming. That wee scenes shows the talent he had. Hey world, that’s my Dad, the late GREAT studio singer Bill Lee whose actual voice you hear. To appease Plummer’s ego, they let him record his own voice during the filming, then hired my Dad to go in and replace it all, or “loop it” as they say. So he also sang Edelweiss and that lovely duet with Julie Andrews written for the film, Something Good. Dad also sang for John Kerr, Lt. Cable in South Pacific and knocked Younger Than Springtime right out of the park. So proud to report all this!! RIP, Dad, I miss you so much

Diana, I'm so happy to be able to write you and tell you what a wonderful voice your father had! I've read a lot about The Sound of Music - I first saw it when I was 5 in the theatre - so I was quite aware of Bill Lee's role in this, but I'm glad I can tell you how much I love his voice! It is so warm, so expressive, and of course so musical and perfectly pitched with the words so well pronounced, and he also did such a spectacular job matching it with the Captain's (Christopher Plummer's) speaking voice and character.
I think your father's voice really really helped the musical very much, and it provided the beauty and warmth and great strength that Christopher Plummer had not yet learned to develop in his own voice. As he himself later recognized, he couldn't sustain a note! His acting was tremendous and stunning, and your father's voice matched that perfectly! You must be so proud! Many thanks to your father for his beautiful contribution to The Sound of Music - my very favorite movie!

Hands down one of the best scenes in the movie. The Captain was always hinted to love music/singing, but he stopped when his wife died. His children reminded him of what he had lost, what he still had, and what kind of happiness he could still have. Brings a tear to your eye, as nothing can bring out your inner kindness quite like The Sound of Music

This moment in the movie is more than just the turning point where the Captain's hardened heart melts. It also shows the love his children have for him. Think about what led to this scene: The children had just been scolded and sent to their rooms to change ' report back here immediately!' They knew they were in deep doodoo. But, they also knew how their father felt about the Baroness and how important it was to him that they make a good impression. So they took it upon themselves to go down and do their performance for her. Maria wasn't there to coerce them. She was outside. The children elected to go do that because they loved their father despite how stern he was and they wanted to please him. Liesl picked up the guitar. The children arranged themselves they way they had rehearsed. They deliberately disobeyed the Captain's orders to report back to him and instead they did this simple gesture on his behalf. It really speaks to the relationship and when the Captain finally welcomes them into his arms after, you can feel all the tension has finally evaporated. Love this scene. Especially as a single father myself.

My heart wants to sing every song it hears
My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds

My heart wants to sigh like a chime that flies
From a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook when it trips and falls over
    Stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray

I remember the first time I saw this movie on the VHS with my family years ago when I was only 6 years old I misunderstood the captain in the beginning, before this scene.
I would not necessarily say I hated him in the beginning, but when he first appeared I remember being a little bit scared of him because of the way he ran his household and he never allowed his children to have fun.
when this scene came it opened my eyes to reality of why he was the way he was. he was not a bad man. he was lost in the grief over losing his wife.
I really loved the way Maria was with the children. she made the whole family come alive again.
she also understood the children a lot more then I think former Governesses did. the other governesses left because they thought the children were badly behaved. Maria understood right from the start that all the children wanted was their Father's Love

In honor of the passing of Christopher Plummer I will be watching this classic tonight. There won't be a dry eye in the house.
One of the greatest films of all time and this is my favorite scene. Very touching, very emotional.
This film is so colorful and so well shot that certain scenes look like paintings come to life. As a kid I grew up singing some of these songs in chorus.
    Rest in Peace Christopher Plummer.

This is one of my favorite scenes from this movie. When the Captain hears his children singing, it's like you can almost see his heart melting by the expression on his face. And when he starts singing, that's when I start crying. It's so beautiful.

This is a moment in this film that always makes me cry. The Captain has closed himself off in his grief for ages, even from his children. And when he hears them singing, he sees that there is the possibility of life, of joy, of happiness, after his grief and he joyfully joins in with his children’s song. They’re stunned but when they realise that their father is back with them, they joyfully run to hug him. The emotion just always hits me.
And when the Captain sings Edelweiss on the stage, kind of as a farewell to his beloved Austria, his sadness his palpable. Makes me cry as well.

The first time I watched this movie I was in elementary school chorus. We had two movie days because the movie is so long. I remember the teacher looked a lot like Maria. She turned the lights off and all us kids got on the floor and she brought in the rolling tv to play The Sound of Music. I spent most of my time jabbering with the others and getting fussed at for not paying attention. I wouldn't trade it for the world, such warm, happy memories.

And that right there is how to make an audience fall in love with the male character…. 🥰 honestly you can see the exact moment that he realises that he has shut his children out and at the end the weak little reaching motions, like he is scared to touch them and he is then overwhelmed by love for them, like a part of him was missing 😭🥰

This really is magnificent.. that palpable tension as they reach the end of the song, followed by his giggle and them hugging him. There’s reflection here on all angles: there has been no music in the house since his wife passed away. The kids were used to him being strict, so that brief tense moment before the cuddle was wonderful - like he had opened up to them again.
    All thanks to Maria.
He is too remembering what made him happy in the past, so seeing his children sing that sing for him, impacts him. It’s beautiful!
