is not wine its brandy, plum brandy (Slivovica), very popular drink in Czechia, Slovakia, Bulgaria and many other Slavic countries. You can't sip it like a whiskey, you have to know how to drink. First breath in, shot whole glass in and then very slowly breath out (like a pranayama) and you will enjoy nice after-taste and warm feeling.
Another popular spirits are meruňka, hruškovica and so. Basically any fruit based clear spirit (I have heard about people making it out of the bananas when they got hand on truckload of bananas destined to be dumped to landfill). I just wonder how long it will take before people will start making spirits from figs that are slowly becoming widespread fruit in south Moravia. I personally prefer "whisky style" as those made by people in small distilleries (pálenice) are around 60 % alcohol.
These sweet dumplings are called "parene buchty" and they should never be so soggy and doughy like you pointed out . No wonder you did not like them. They did not cook them long enough...they were raw inside. Otherwise, when cooked correctly they are lovely.
