really great tunes, and I love the guitar! yes I hear some Frampton, but immediately I was time warped back to 1984 hearing Giuffria "Call to the heart" and craig goldy's guitar following the melody of the chorus, i'm thinking it's probably close along the same chord progression. The bassist in my band died by suicide in March of 2011, I never did pick up the pieces and put another band together. He was an extraordinary person. Talented, friendly, but very chaotic. I don’t know if I’ll ever try again but watching this video helped.

I'm gonna say the guitar solo on that track made it worth listening to for me. Should have been an instrumental as far as I'm concerned. So melodic. So heartfelt and emotional, to echo Richard S.. Accurate and proficient but not showy. Grand but not grandiose. What gorgeous crystalline tone! Wow wow wow. Could listen to that all day.

LOL. Your second sentence is exactly what I thought when I read the first one! Of course he had to do all those other things first so he’d have the stories to tell. And I think this video and the takedown story were exceptional stories told with real emotion.
I know right. If I was a TV exec, I would build a music show around Rick a music history show "Called what ever happened to" he is so captivating. Another thing and I don't want to inflate his ego but I think Rick hates heavy metal and I'm a heavy metal guitar player. I watch Rick play the guitar and he could have been one of the greatest players that ever lived. He's a walking guitar god that should have a TV show.
Hey Rick! At 2:41 the fill side light either turned off or ran out of batteries. Just wanted to say, I love the contrast of the image *after* it turned off. IMHO, you don’t need a light on the fill side. There is an old axiom in cinematography that’s essentially - “once you’ve lit your scene, turn off half your lights.” Def a metaphor in there that connects to music as well, but I thought that little removal of light made a dramatic improvement to the shape of light on your face.
Anyways, I know this is an insanely niche reply, but you strike me as a guy who is looking for incremental improvement.
Side note - I’m a filmmaker now, but I started out working for Mitch Dane and Jacquire King and Vance Powell.

Dear mister Beato, first of all I'm sorry for your loss of a great friend. Some stars appear to shine so short and bright, their light leaves an imprint of Shadows seen (heard) long after they're gone. You talking about him nearly 10 years after is one of those shadows. Thank you for your story!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my daughter to suicide 5 years ago. I understand a lot about it as well as there is so much we can never understand. That sometimes we just have to say I don't know and be content with that. Music continues to be part of my therapy and I am happy to say thankfully that your channel is a part of that. I am so sorry for your loss internet stranger / music brother. The death of a loved one is not a wound that time heals, it is a wound you just learn to live with. Of course, you know this already. I almost lost my daughter to depression - we came very close. I did however lose my mother in a car accident in my teens. Sending you positive vibes from Australia. Much love and respect mate. ❤

PS--This is why when I opened Beato Book 4.0, it scared me all to hell and back. My doctors want me to return to playing guitar, and I thought that before I die, I should learn music theory to assist protecting my memory. Well, turning short-term memory into long-term and instinctive memory is quite a challenge. Add in building street rods, working during school as a mechanic and building and maintaining open wheel race cars and driving and crashing them, and my hands at 74 are a mess. I will not give up.

Wow… this channel is a gift on UA-cam. Rick’s ability to tell a story with no bs, infuse empathy, humor, and self-reflection, and then do it all with such a thorough analysis/breakdown of the musical components really is special. This episode is a powerful/moving tribute to his friend/business partner Johnny Diamond.

When you played that last guitar piece by Crowfield (I had never heard of them), and the video faded back into you playing the part, it immediately struck me how emotional it was, I was like.. Rick is baring his soul here. I felt even a little sad and I didn't know why, and then you told the story of your friend's tragic passing, and then I finally understood why it felt that way in the pit of my stomach.
And then I cried because you clearly loved the guy, and I felt bad for him, and the folks who loved him so dearly.

I felt the same thing. It's kind of a joyous solo - but there's a melancholy in the joy. A nice tribute to his friend. The leaping register jumps, the sustains leading to the keening melodies in the upper registers then the neat Eric Johnson-esque pirouettes of the last segments leading to more longer sustains and a fitful last utterance.. This is an excellent solo.
The best things I've written came from strong feelings. Sadness, love, hate, joy. It's not surprising that others can feel those feelings in that's written and played.
I'm completely take back by your comments CM, you had just described exactly what I saw, precieved,and felt ,as Rick played that solo ,it was like water, gentle and warm, washed over me and as I welled up with the sadness and love I had just witnessed, I read what you had just wrote and I thought how could this be so precise.... I have preformed all my life and as my body slowly betrays the gift I had been given ( and admittedly squandered) the universal deeply spiritual power of music is still alive. Thank you Rick and very sorry, your friend could not have been memorized any better.

Been a guitar solo connoisseur for 50+ year and your guitar work is stunningly beautiful. Nothing touches melody with the right dynamic.
I am an artist, and I suffer from bipolar disorder, depression is a beast...I lost my brother to suicide three years ago come December, and am still trying to finish the song I am writing in his memory. Thank you for sharing. Bless you.
Sad to say, but art and suicide are close friends. I’m a stand-up comic, and singer. I’ve lost count of the number of comics I personally know who deal with depression, and it seems that about 1 a year takes his/her own life. What form of art doesn’t seem to matter, comedy, music, visual arts, etc. the issue is widespread.
You just became something more than "the guy I like to hear discuss music theory" in my eyes.
This video was moving in a way that you don't encounter much on UA-cam.

I don't know how many takes it took you to piece this video together, but it seems like you were able to keep yourself together until the very end. The lead guitar player of my band killed himself between us recording our first professional quality album and its release. He seemed so excited about the record, so the timing just didn't seem to make sense.
Looking back on things, there are two important things I can point to. Firstly, he had a lot of trauma in his life, which he suppressed with drugs early on and alcohol later. He had been trying to sober up and I later learned that this just brings back all that trauma, which he was not prepared to deal with.
Secondly, which is most important for anyone else watching their potentially suicidal friends, the last time we all saw him he seemed to be happier than usual, with a clearer head. Like Rick's experience with Johnny, we had no idea that he was about to kill himself. It turns out this is very common. Once someone truly decides and commits to taking their own life, it's as if a weight is lifted off of them and they will appear to be happier than ever.
Watch out for your friends if they're getting sober and don't be fooled by a sudden turnaround in their emotional state. You may just be able to save those you love.

Thank you for your account, you've hit a few nails on the head. Men in particular rarely give obvious clues they're about to commit suicide, and also, both drugs and alcohol, when they are a problem, are usually a means of self-medicating against unresolved stuff. In my view people focus too much on the drugs and alcohol, and not enough on the underlying reasons WHY they're self-medicating. Resolve those issues with the kind of therapy that is designed for dealing with the underlying historical crap, and the person stands a chance of letting it go without then killing themselves. FYI, I've known 5 people who actively killed themselves, and two people who starved themselves to death through self-neglect and not wanting to eat, as a result of their unresolved issues. I also know people whose therapy resulted in them deciding to live when they were feeling suicidal, so it's a path worth taking.
@@herseem Thank you for sharing as well. There's actually a history of suicide in my family. Grandfather killed himself when my dad was about 18 and two of my uncles eventually followed suit.
The problem with drugs/alcohol, aside from being generally unhealthy, is that they do a good job of suppressing but it eventually comes back if you get clean. I'd almost recommend that some people keep their vices if they don't have therapy or some other sort of reliable help to get them through those things resurfacing.
@Ross May Suicide is so hard to deal with. All too often we are left with lots of questions and/or regrets. I texted my band mate the day before, which was 4th of July, to see if he was around to hang out. He eventually responded but I didn't follow up. Would that have changed anything? Who knows and it hurts to think about. I've realized that it's of no use to think about the what ifs. I try to celebrate his life and his contribution to my life as much as possible. I take every opportunity to tell stories about him. My heart goes out to you and everyone else that has had to deal with such losses.
@Ross May it's very hard if you still don't know why or don't know what else you could have done. Luckily, because of the specific circumstances of each one and my own philosophical perspectives, I didn't have survivors guilt (although I have ongoing rage about a guy that was negligently killed), but I know one guy, a former friend, who had survivor's guilt really badly, completely unfairly on himself. He felt so bad that he disconnected himself from myself and others who had been involved with one guy that died, despite the fact that he' (and I) had gone beyond the call of duty in helping the guy. Survivor's guilt also deserves therapy if you have it
Seriously, I got lost in the solo. It was hypnotic. I watched that solo a half dozen times. Lots of guitarists have technical proficiency, but few are able to communicate the emotional content of the music the way you just did - MORE PLEASE!!

Your videos have reconnected me with my own musicianship that was lying dormant and my 15 month old son now dances in our living room as I play guitar, thank you for that also.
I lost my dad to suicide when I was 12 years old. I’ve lost multiple musician friends to suicide. Depression is a horrible and deadly disease. Thanks for the tribute and showing us the music you helped to create. Glad you are here Rick. The only people who don’t fail are the ones who never do anything. You are a great musician and educator.
Depression, like alcoholism is not a disease. You can see a disease under a microscope. Both are states of mind.
@@Nautilus1972 - it's trues that depression is all in the head, but whilst depression is not a true disease in the medical sense, the term is used as an analogy to explain why some peeps get addicted to stuff or suffer depression, while other peeps don't (I'm guessing it's a chemical reaction to stimuli, but don't quote me!)
My brother has battled depression on and off for years and cannot explain to me why he will suddenly feels out of balance (and he has a degree in psychology). My brother and I are alike in many ways, but he's always had a negative disposition, whereas I've always been a positive person, so even though I get blue days, they never turn black.
If you've never had true depression, you have no idea what it's like and how it can affect you. I don't understand it either, but I'd never tell someone who suffers that it's not a disease - that's like telling someone to harden up coz it can't be that bad.
This is why you are so successful in our eyes Rick. You’ve been through all the ropes, hell and back, and every major change the last couple decades. You do it for those you’ve met along the way. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, Rick. Johnny was my nephew and I appreciate the tribute. I only wish Johhny could have seen the profound affect that he had on people. I had seen Johnny just shortly before his passing and he was so excited about the way things were going and progressing. That made it so much more of a shock to get the call of his passing.

But always better to make known, and maybe you will help others right now fighting that same demon.

Johnny "JD" Diamond was a great human. He was smart, oh so smart. He was funny. He was caring. He was loyal. He was amazing at spotting new talent and amazing songs. I could go on and on. He knew how to make you feel special and needed. He was my friend, and he is missed so dearly! RIP JD!!
Rick Beato, thank you for this tribute to Johnny! I was an intern for him back in 2001/2002 at Big Top. He always found ways to include me which made me feel special. We became friends at that time. I have some great memories of him that will be with me always!
Thanks for sharing your memories Beato. I remember meeting you when I was still in radio. I was visiting my brother in Atl and Johnny was living there. I reached out to him to grab lunch and he insisted that I come by your house/studio and meet you. There were a lot of people that I'm glad that I got to meet simply because Johnny would say "yea, bro...you've gotta meet this person." I met one of my closest friends who I consider a brother because of Johnny. Our last conversation was over lunch about 2 weeks before he died about us doing some work together and then him sending me some music that of course we argued about. I remember calling you the night he died...and thinking back to it, the people that I spoke to that night was insanely diverse....just as Johnny's universe was. Cheers Rick, way to keep Johnny's memory alive.

Rick…what a lovely tribute to sweet Diamond. I can still see he and "Lil' D" in the Music Farm Charleston audience in…'95? with their hand-made signs requesting songs, I can still picture all the chaos that reigned during his short-lived stint as our tour manager (he was a much better A&R/manager), I can still hear that signature laugh. That giggle he had that made his eyes two small slits of mirth and usually indicated that he was up to (or about to be up to) some kind of shenanigans. The reason Diamond was so good at being an A&R guy was that he was simply a super-fan of bands he loved, and just figured that if he loved a band, everyone else would love them, too. Music really made him happy. I remember Happy Diamond more than anything, which of course is good, and I'm grateful for that. But mental illness is a real issue that we often sweep under the rug, even sometimes when it comes to people we know and love. Thanks for making this tribute and speaking openly about something that we need to talk more about, and for introducing new folks to our friend Johnny Diamond. Hope you're well, friend!
So many people can't understand that depression is not "a mood." It's an actual illness with a physical cause, and it kills people just as dead as cancer or COVID-19.

Yep... I'm going through an episode, I guess you can call it that, at the moment. I suffer from major depression, social anxiety and bipolar. I forced myself off the meds last year because i was gaining too much weight, lost 11kgs but back into depression. My wife thinks she gets it but she doesn't and my parents and siblings don't get it all. People think it's just something to get over, everyone gets down. I'm feeling down, in fighting the voice in my head that is trying to convince me that I'm better off dead. My two little kids are what help the most, hearing their voices, sitting with my son learning to play guitar with him. Your channel Rick is a massive help, thank you for what you do.
@@bujo2k6 you are 100% NOT better off dead. Keep thinking of your family, and talk to your Dr about other medications. It can take a lot of experimentation and dosage adjustments to find the right treatment for you - be patient, and please remember that you are valued.
So...I've quietly watched your channel for years-super impressed with your depth of musical knowledge and entertained by your many "insider" stories. But hearing/watching you solo guitar in this video was a "wow" moment! What a powerful solo, masterfully played. My friend, you are exceptionally talented in ways, apparently, I can't imagine. as someone who is and has been struggling with depression since my wife died, I'm very sorry for the loss if your friend. It's hard to understand the mind of someone who is this depressed. the worst enemy often comes from within. some people seem to bear the weight of trouble more than others, usually the kindest souls are the ones who suffer the most. thank you for sharing his story, we can all remember him to now.

Sean Collins they work when they work. When they don’t, woah. I was lucky to have a psychiatrist that was very skilled at figuring out over time what works and what doesn’t. It’s still a rough process even if you are under the care of a good doctor. My current psychiatrist had to take me off my Lithium because it trashed my kidneys. That sucked because it was otherwise very effective. I was also taking Lamictal. We decided to try to lean on coping skills because neither of us wanted to start playing the psychiatric lotto again. It’s more difficult but still manageable. I’m fortunate enough that the only consequence so far is I have a few more bad days a year than I’m use to.
@@ExasBits you would be better served to let go of the idea of anything other than temporary relief, with the use of any form of neurotrophic drugs. seriously, I've seen the damage first hand. get clean, work in building your personality and character, it pays dividends in the long term, the pain is short term
Sean Collins my 20 year experience begs to differ that this applies in all cases but we can agree to disagree since mental health is not as cut and dry as many other medical disciplines.
Edit: Also make no mistake, no amount of medication in the world will work if you don’t have therapy and in many cases medication is over prescribed. My first psych thought I didn’t need drugs either. I ended up a mental institution when I was awake for nearly a week.

It's amazing to think how much great music we'll never experience in our entire lifetime, yet maddening to realize they keep playing all the same stuff on the radio all the time! Lol
And everytime they play the same song, that artist/publisher/writer get a royalty! Makes me think there are literal GATEKEEPERS that make this happen in this industry specifically. And may be why it's so difficult for someone "from the outside" to come in and steal revenue from them.

You know I've had my boughts with depression also. For a while there I hit a rut. I really wasn't going anywhere with my music and couldn't seem to shake it. Then when I was ready to throw in the towel, I discovered your channel. It was like something I'd never heard before. I started implementing the advice you'd impart and what I've learned from your book, it was like a shot in the arm. Over the months since, I've watch you, Rhett, and Dave share your personal experience and though we've never met you've been like a mentor to me. I literaly get excited when you post a new vid. You've helped me become a better, musician, producer, and person. My heart goes out to you I'm so sorry for your loss, I know too well what you're going through. I just wanted to let you know how much you mean to me, as I'm sure other's have also, I can't speak for them, but as for me I thank God for you every day. This had me in so much tears this morning. Hard to hear man with so much influence take his life. I release a project that never really got heard except for one song and the guy that helped me get one song on the radio had passed last year. My friend that lives not too far from me said "who were you working with?" I was like Troy he was like he passed away I recieved this from a reliable source. I just fell to my knees and cried all day. Covid took him from here. Its been almost a year from his death still hurts at times. So I know the type of pain your experiencing with this video. So 😥 😭😭😭. Thank you for sharing.

yes, jonny was instrumental in helping me get one of my early EP’s After You recorded in charleston, which Eric Bass produced, it was ‘worship’ which was not their typical genre, but what they brought helped make it a much better project.
It was a sad day when i heard the news.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve gone through this kinda stuff as well. I also dealt with a lot of suicidal thoughts during my childhood but actually got completely set free from all of it by Jesus. It was crazy. I just thought I’d tell you he loves you and if he’ll do it for me he’ll do it for you. All you gotta do is ask him yourself. Bless you I hope you’re doing well ❤️

My brother Jay committed suicide back in November 2007, I'm sorry that you have had to suffer the loss of your close friend to such an awful way.
Its something you never expect to go through. One of those things we tell ourselves that it happens to other people, but you or i won't know anyone that does it. The sad truth is that many people struggle to speak out for help and it results in them taking their own life.
After Jay died, I spiraled out of control and ended up suffering with depression for years. In 2017 I suffered a breakdown whilst at work, and was signed off for 7 months before i went back. It has taken me the last 3 years to rebuild my life after numerous mistakes and falls.
But to anyone going through anything similar or fighting depression in their own war, keep hope. You will make it through. Everyone is there to help you, just speak up.
And to you Rick, you inspire us all and have helped and guided so many. As your channel is music based, you may not realize its power because it serves as a tool to overcome depression. It has been proven many times that music is an extremely powerful form of therapy for depression. It's how I found your channel, back in what feels like another life that i used to live. I found your channel back when I was suffering and trying to find my therapy. Which in the end turned out to be falling in love with music again :)
Your channel played a part in my fight through my depression. And so I thank you Rick, Genuinely and humbly.
