Ford Explorer Crash Test FAIL

- The 2018-2021 Ford Explorer rates poor because its structure was seriously compromised. Intrusion reached 15 inches at the lower door hinge pillar and 13 inches at the upper door hinge pillar and the dashboard. The door sill was pushed in 6 inches toward the dummy. Measures taken from the dummy showed a high likelihood of injuries to the right hip in a real-world crash of the same severity, as well as a possibility of left lower leg injuries.
The Explorer also had poor structural performance in the driver-side test and earns an overall rating of marginal for driver-side small overlap protection. Ford is redesigning the Explorer and says the new model will have improved small overlap protection on both sides. Join us to enjoy exclusive benefits:

Interesting how Ford does well with the F150 but fails miserably with the Explorer.... must be time for a design update.
DanielJaegerFilms
Agreed. Especially when the early F150 didn’t do as well and Ford quickly updated the truck to do better. I think it was the extended cab F150 that didn’t do well and the Crew F150 did...and then then extended cab F150 was updated.
I was wondering this too yet this explorer design has been out for a while now. I drove one and i didnt like it at all and noticed you feel like you sit low and everything was cramped for such a large vehicle. I thought it must have to do with safety and crash ratings. Completely wrong. Just a very poor design. I have an f150 and like it a lot. But this is not a worthy product to sell to anyone especislly promoting it in commercials to families.
I went on a rode trip in one of these, and it was fine, but not the best. I agree it seems outdated, and has a bland design.
DanielJaegerFilms it's getting redesigned completely for 2019.
DanielJaegerFilms f150 is there money maker and main focus.
Ford marketing: "FORD BUILT TOUGH"
Crash test facility: "hold my drink"

Go check on the F150 crash test. Compared to the other competitors. You’ll see why they say that

k_Jay Car companies are only interested in making money. They all do the bare minimum just to sell that car. The car industry is the dirtiest out of all, because they manage to fool people into buying a simple vehicle which takes them from point A to B, all for 50k+.

Or if the front passenger did something to them and the driver crashed on purpose
Exactly. Cheap quality, sourced from magic Far Eastern/Narnia, mean end up with low quality product. I would not put my family in that. Falls apart: cabin, front floor, wheel fell off. Don't give that is bcos it has to crash properly. Utter bunk...

They have to build all these cars too light now because of stupid CAFE regulations as well as stupider global warming regulations

So many little pieces flying around, looks so fragile, like an eggshell shattering.
These tests are not designed to be passed with flying colors. They are designed to be "failed" so car companies can develop ways to make cars safer. The Explorer has been the same since 2011, I'm sure when it gets a re-design the result will change, much like most of the other cars that have done poorly.
Sup3r6f0ur Then why does Volvo, Mercedes, Audi, pretty much most Euro SUV’s always get good ratings?
They call it the Explorer because you'll likely be exploring the afterlife in one of these
Cars have never been tested on the passenger side impact.
Go out and test every brand on that side and then come back here with the results. Dont just hate on the first one tested. I want to see every brand tested. Chevy Dodge Audi Volkswagen Porsche Honda Toyota Nissan Jeep. Etc....
Apples to Apples people!
TNitro N still they are better than ford
TNitro N good point
TNitro N why would a car be weaker on one side??? Especially when many of these cars come in right hand drive versions! I call BS, no reason for a car to be much stronger on the drivers side, that’s simply not true, do they use a different metal for one side, and a stronger one for the other?
@@TheMW2informer It is true. the small overlap crash test used to be run only on the driver side. So most companies build that side stronger with more reinforcement to save money by not reinforcing the other side. Everyone did this not just Ford. The test requirement has changed and now and can be run on the passenger side so they have stopped doing that. Ford explorer does not come in right hand drive.
Volvo would never.
volvo is very biutifuul
David Cammaerts the Ford Explorer is on a Volvo platform
figures
Yes, that platform was the Volvo P2 platform which was shared with Ford as the D3 platform. Current 2018 Volvo XC60s and XC90s S90s and V90s all use the SPA platform. Ford no longer owns them so Ford doesn’t have access to the SPA platform as Volvo is owned by Geely. That platform (D3) has been around since 2005 and the D4 has been around since 2009 (IIRC). 9-15 years (depending on how it is looked at) and Ford still can’t get this right?
David Cammaerts you're right, Volvo is still sitting at the mechanics shop.
Less steel = more profit !
fearfactz1 thats the formula for 💰💰💰🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸. The nxt company that figures out how to make cars out of. News Paper will be the very best.
fearfactz1 Cars have areas where plastic is strategically used to divert energy away from the passangers which is actually significantly safer than old steel cars. The reason this car failed is not because it wasn’t made of more steel. Source: I’m an engineer
Boo Ya so how do engineers justify plastic intake manifolds that warp. Ive seen Chrysler do this where they offer a 2.4 liter on a pt cruiser one with aluminium cast and the other intake plastic. Pretty obvious the one with aluminium has no service as where the one with plastic requires in most cases a complete replacement. Check this out most new 5.7 hemis offer a plastic oil pan. Most engineers often point the finger at the government to meet standards. This vid. Is about safety but at the same time this an opportunity to get cheap and put plastic in many areas that is not necessarily needed. As most techs always have a long list where and why they use plastic on soo many places that do not belong. Valve covers, timing guides, transmission pans, radiators, plumbing, turbo charger components. All these fail simply because of the material. Whats the strategy in that?? More costly repairs and make people buy cars ever3yrs???
Gearz The conversation was about the exterior of the car in which plastic is better in some situations. But yes, plastic on components that experience higher levels of thermal expansion and contraction makes no sense to me either. In those cases, plastic is definitely being used to cut corners and save cost. No engineer will tell you that plastic engine pieces such as intake manifolds are a good thing but they use them to save money. It’s not that we like using plastic, we just have no choice sometimes.
Boo Ya yes like youve mentioned in your first response that plastic does serve its purpose towards safety since it absorbs energy of the force. This vid is just about that and i realize there are benefits when used correctly. Ive been to many seminars in which they have a member of a team of engineers and not just me but many who wrench have actually asked them to their face why certain plastic components are found internally or externally on engine and you either get 2 common answers 1) we do not have an answer for that question 2) we had to meet standards set by either the govt or company. Really they do not have to answer any questions that make them look bad or uncomfortable. I cannot fully put the blame on many who design and engineer our vehicles because i do know they are given a task (the ones who watch the companies expenses) to create something with restrictions on cost and materials used.

This is the result of the IIHS repeatedly, for decades, testing on the drivers side with small overlapping. Excess structures are put on that side. Now they switched sides, this should surprise nobody.
Well, they switched sides, and brands like Honda and Subaru passed the test without problems...
That's because the Japanese are selling in Asia and Europe and has to face their standard. Explorer is US, Canada and Mexico only.
It was funny how they surprised the automakers by testing the passenger side for once. It’s also kind of unethical that several automakers were adding reinforcements so they could pass the driver side small overlap test, but left the passenger side as-is.
They are funded by all the insurance companies who pay the claims out on cars in crashes. They started testing small overlap because they noticed large claims for medical and fatal crashes. They also found through research of crash data that some cars weren't performing equally from the left compared to the right side.
How did the 2018 get approved for production is beyond me.
The government run tests (different from the IIHS) has barely changed its tests since the 70s

giuseppe .paratore there is an SUV made in USA that is the safest SUV in the world.
yes ur daddy usa fool!
Nick Macchiavelli BMW X5, X6
X5 and X6 are designed in Germany and belong to a German company. Therefore the safest SUV in the world is European.
Nick Macchiavell it’s not the Bayerische Motoren Werkes that makes the safest SUV in the world. The safest is designed and assembled in the USA.
All y'all saying american trash are full of it.... American cars are some of the fastest, safest, most reliable cars (reliable? Yes, depending on how you treat them) But remember there are exception JUST LIKE EVERY JAPANESE, KOREAN, OR EUROPEAN CAR MANUFACTURED.
Any european car like bmw, mercedes, audi, volkswagon, puegot, or porsche are great cars, much better than smerican cars. American cars have no class, they all look the same and are not safe. Also japanese cars are lightyears ahead anyone else.
Man, those crash test dummies are pretty hardcore. The put on war paint before getting sent down the track.
Time to ditch this entire chassis and make a far better explorer. This one looks nice and thats it. No passion or performance or practicality or anything that stands out. I like fords but i dont like this one ever since its redesign. The interior is terrible. The engine sounds are terrible and it wouldn't go far off road. Fail from its last redesign.
I cashed my dads 99 Ford Explorer the exact same way at 40 mph, still rode that thing to work. Yikes to “new and improved” technology

At least Ford Explorer deployed side curtain air bags, unlike Ford Escape. How safe is Ford Flex, Edge, and Expedition in the next crash test?
Im sure that flex, edge and expedition performed way better
I wouldn't count on the Flex doing better. The Flex is an older design. If it does, I will be suprised.
I would say it just happened by coincidence that this one went off. It is like a game of roulettes I feel in American cars. The airbags do not always go off, as shown in Jeep, Ford, Chevy.
I worked at the factory that makes the engine cable for these, the reinforcements are on the drivers side not the passenger side. Why they're not on both sides I'll never know, most likely cost
Prove you're the best don't say it *cough*...ford
I mean they have reason to say they are the best. They used recycled metal which is good for the environment. This is why the crash tests are bad.
No reinforcement on the passenger side rails. The gov currently only requires driver side for frontal offset crashes ( 2 lane roads ). It's reversed for the right hand drive copies.
Another reason not to buy a Ford.

Shoulda stay with body on frame😤 instead of unibody.
Yashua Fradkin yeah, of course the one vehicle that you can take the roof and doors off and fold down the windshield isn’t gonna be safe
WOW! That test failed more than the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Ford has some safe and reliable cars. But-SUVs and trucks are like a Lineman...they're too heavy and cannot stop in time.

Never thought my 2010 Explorer (body on frame) would be safer than a brand new one. Just another reason to keep what I have, my V8, gas guzzling, 7500 pound-towing, body on frame SUV!
Same is true of my 98! At least till the rust gets at it....
its ford what did you guys expected
Nikolay Nedev the F-150 gets a good rating is that what we expected too
Nikolay Nedev the current Explorer is eight years old. It's being replaced in 2019 with a completely redesigned model. These safety tests change over the years so it's not surprising that probably the oldest model doing poor.
wow that was so original and offended me so much lol how old are you 12?
Pennywise oldest model?? Can't you read that it's 2018 model or that isn't new enough for you?! There are family sedans from 2010 that perform way better than that piece of American junk. S.T T. It's virtually the same fucking vehicle from 2011 with new headlights and taillights. It was "refreshed" in 2016. Ford didn't go in and reengineer the thing in 2016. So yes, it a seven year old design.
It’s amazing how the Edge did very well in its crash test and the Explorer did poorly. Not a fan of the lack of consistency, especially in one of their best selling vehicles.
And Trump complains people dont buy american cars.
Mark 😄😂😂😂 ....i bet he is still wondering why.
wrxassa This company as a whole is more the issue than them leaving the U.S.A. it does not matter who assembles your vehicle but what does matter is the engineering that goes into it. Believe it when Ford is always trying new crap materials for their nxt gen. Example F150 (BudLight can version) all the respect for a truck went out the window. That has everything todo with American engineering doing things the wrong way. I respect aluminium being used on sports cars but a truck??!!! Well its no wonder Toyota us untouchable. Chrysler is already ready to fade away.
so a ford explorer is unsafe which makes all american cars unsafe? come on man

You guys think this is only a ford problem? Small overlap passenger side protection is still horrible in all modern cars. This is why they are testing for this now. I dare say if they tested any current production vehicle and it will end up the same. Glad they are testing this now for sure.
"why no one buy American cars?" Cause they only care about design, size and money and forget about safety, quality and technology, maybe?
hey dude, in my country safety it's a joke, search the Nissan Tsuru and laugh with me
I was rear ended by an older explorer, my little Japanese car was a total loss, his car looked almost unscathed
I want to know how often car accidents are small overlap ones. Probably not many.
Yeah and how often is it a massive solid block of steel that doesn't move? How about a large plunge off a cliff test?
Slim To None think a freeway barrier moves for you?? People die every day in crashes just like this.
IIHS said roughly 20% of crashes. Most notably a head on collision or a tree/pole.

People looking at phones while driving needs to be cracked down on hard. Distracted driving has actually eclipsed drunk driving where i live as leading preventable cause of automobile deaths
I say straight up $1000 fine and at least a year license suspension for being on your phone driving
I think ppl dont realize they IIHS doesnt perform these tests for our safety. It’s to inform the insurance companies what the risks are of insuring us and how to weigh it from business perspective.
This vehicle was designed in 2011 way before this test so it would make sense that it performs poorly on it
Trenton_ A (2018) model on tittle wrong or right ?
Nguyễn Quang Hải You entirely missed the point. Take the Crown Victoria for example. It was the same body design from 1998 to 2011.
This test is not new and many cars pass it with flying colors. The 2018 Ford Escape did horribly bad too. Coincidence?
Wrong... The model is a 2018 and should have the necessary structural redesigning to pass that test...
WtrDogg20 but remember most manufacturers inside slogan.... profit over people.
I remember my mom had a 2006 Ford Explorer and that thing was a beast she had that car for 12 years until it finally gave up on 2017 the car was even crashed by some dumbass and it was rolled across the street and hit a telephone pole meaning we lost the car for a full 6 months in the shop but after that the car was alive
And ford says that this is better than the 4Runner cough cough
I guess lower extremity injuries are "acceptable" to the manufacturers. Their goal is to prevent fatality and brain trauma. This type of "accident" falls into the category of severe. Remember angle, speed, pavement conditions play a huge part in the outcome.
Damn son!!!-😂😡😡😡🤘🤠🤘
The issue here is the small overlap test was implemented by the IIHS less than ten years ago. Before that it was the offset or moderate overlap as it’s called now. Car crashes haven’t changed even though cars have. Why didn’t the IIHS do this test 20 or 30 years ago? It wouldn’t have taken any more technology to do this test back then. Cars are a lot safer now than they were 20 years ago, but the best safety feature is still the driver.

This is unacceptable. I don't understand how today a car that doesn't have 5 stars is allowed on the market.
I know which one NOT TO BUY!!!
First they replace the Crown Vics with these things, then they can't make them any safer than a Crown Vic. The only advantage to those is size. Now in 2020 they want to make the Utility Interceptor all hybrid. We'll see how that works out.

Well in defense of Ford this FWD based Explorer has been around for nearly 6 years (since 2012). The 2019 Explorer is based on a more premium RWD architecture and is seen on the new Police utility interceptor. A hybrid version is also expected.
This generation is designed on the D3 platform. This platform was ripped off by Ford when they owned Volvo. This platform actually dates back to the late 90’s

For some reason I’m in love with the new explorer
How the hell can they get away with selling this crap in 2018? it really is giving the finger to their customers and saying "We could have built a much safer car but we didn't want to, we don't give a shit about your safety."
Seriously people here can’t see the big picture. The current Explorer is engineered and introduced 2011 as a 5th generation. The second oldest cars of the group Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder are introduced in 2013. The drivers side small overlap test was introduced in 2012 after the 5th gen Explorer came out. Although it’s disappointing Ford didn’t improve the Explorer, we should expect 6th gen Explorer on it’s way for 2019 to be a IIHS top safety pick plus. Also people commenting saying made in USA, do you realize that all SUV’s featured for crash are manufactured in the United States? Sorento, highlander, Explorer, Acadia, pathfinder, atlas, Pilot, grand Cherokee all are made in the USA. Oh btw, GMC Acadia earned good rating so pls just stop saying American makes are trash. All cars have pros and cons. Explorer is No.1 in its segment despite it being the oldest. So doing poor in crash test doesn’t support the car is junk.
The only exploring you will do in this is a close inspection of the windscreen
Ford makes the best trucks but lacks in other areas. They need to redesign the Explorer
The car clearly says 2018 on the side, plus the car is not the 2020 model, the title of the video is incorrect.
Have you guys noticed Ford changed their motto from “built Ford tough” to “built ford proud”

بصراحة لم أتوقع أن سيارة من فورد خصوصا (أس يو في) تفشل في اختبار التصادم إلى هذه الدرجة
The edge it's being driven into is a shear edge. Interesting. Wonder how many other vehicles are shown hitting this?
This crash testing is almost out of date they should do more car to car crashes. Makes for better results
So the airbags completely protect occupant and no structure touched test dummy and it is considered a fail ¿ any vehicle in this condition would be destroyed beyond use so the lvl of dmg is irrelevant as long as occupant is protected.
Really what they are testing in this video is the ford explorer 2015 is noted by the radio that is inside and the front part of the bumper was placed for the explorer 2017 horseshoe that is a hypothesis of why the title and description is wrong of the video
Then they discovered that fluids in the drivetrain and not putting screws through the roof made the vehicle stronger. LOL
Maybe car manufacturers should stop worrying about all the technology and gadgets they're putting into the cars that are causing distractions and accidents and start worrying about safety of the driver compartment in an accident
I remember the defective tyres on older versions of the ford explorer....now this. Really disappointed ford motor company.
It all comes down to cost and average.when you make a lot of cars you run alot of cost, most other brands don't have as many production numbers.
Geez. I have the Explorer. I had the Edge. So what's the big safe SUV for the same money?
You think a car brand that's been in the business for literally over a hundred years would get it right by now
Ford really isn’t focusing on the small overlap for the *focus* and the explorer too.
