Another problem you forgot was the actuator that controls the vents the defrost distribution. It's located under the dash in a crazy bad spot. You can change them by going underneath and around the steering colum, but the book states taking the dash out to replace a 25 dollar part plus 12 to 1500 dollars. Very common problems for explorers have sticking on vent and defrost not working. I bet I've repaired 10 of these things from year 2012 to 2018 or so. Insane!
Own a 2014 XLT with 60K. Just got it back from the Ford dealer where they did like $5000 worth of transmission work. Almost a full rebuild. Some items replaced are 2 and 3 forward gears and torque converter and many more. Luckily still had the powertrain warranty So only paid like $100. Car is running like new again, thank God.
That's truly frightening. I was considering buying a used Explorer 4x4 until reading these comments. No thanks. (And of course the new ones under warranty are priced way out of anyone but the Rothschild's and Rockefellers means to purchase comfortably). This entire system is rigged to keep us enslaved to those same aforementioned hooknosed banksters.
I have a 2013 Limited with 145,000 miles and two problems I have with this car is, one, the hood paint peeling off and the second is the head lights. They are HID lights and to replace them you have to take the whole front of the car off to get to the light assembly. I am replacing them with LED lights instead. This is my fourth explorer and on the other three I traded them in after 300,000 miles. Good rigs but, like any vehicle there will be repairs. As far as the paint on the hood I feel Ford should take care of that problem seeing how there are so many explorers on the road with this problem.
My wife owns a 2014 limited, 219k miles, had the toe links and rear lid seal done on a recall, replaced the battery twice, brakes and rotors 3 times, accessory belt, ccv, and spark plugs 3 times, and that's it. Most reliable vehicle I've owned except for our standby car that sits and we drive only if needed, 1991 Honda civic 4 door with 532k miles. Like all vehicles it's luck of the draw. Hopefully we will get another 100k from our explorer, freaking car prices are stupid and anyone who buys one right now either has money to burn or needs their head checked!

Thank you, I just bought a 2016 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility with 138k miles. No issues yet as it had a great maintenance service record throughout it's use with the police department and will keep an eye on those issues. Thank you.
I maintain a fleet of these,100+ units, they are car, they all have problems, vics were easier to fix, it those have been out of production for almost 10 years, this is what we have for a replacement, may as well embrace it, because all of them have issues.
All cars come with there own problems my family runs a used car lot and every vehicle is know for there problems. Parts age and have to be replaced regardless of the vehicle, I have a 2013 ford explorer and I love it was less problems then my previous suv a gmc acadia i had a two page list of issues, I only had 2 issues with my explorer my husband is a mechanic and fixed it in a day
2018 I just reached 100.000 today, - Water pump had a very small leak - the Infotainment processor went bad - rear wheel hub started making noise I still got warranty on the vehicle so I got everything changed fast, tbh the infotainment processor was a little pricey aside from that I didn’t had any major problems with the vehicle, I’d definitely recommend it, amazing vehicle for the money.
I had a 2012 Explorer XLT with the 3.5L V6 engine. At about 200k miles the water pump started leaking. This is internally in the engine and runs off of the timing chain. A very expensive fix to say the least. Luckily no coolant had gotten into the oil.
Thanks for the video. A couple of days ago on 2017 Explorer Sport checked the hood on mine and it is starting to bubble. Searched more on the web and, yeh, it's a thing with these vehicles. I was prepared to do verbal battle with the dealership when I met with them the day after finding this issue. They stepped up right away for a warranty. Not a cover up paint job, which I would not have accepted anyway, but a factory replacement hood, paint and install. So that's a plus for Ford and a dealership that backed me up. I've owned many vehicles in 55+ years of driving. This is encouraging for me to continue being a customer. I did spend a day looking at replacement options, but having totally dismissed Chrysler after a warranty fight years ago, and Chevy issues too, I'm running out of manufacturers. ;-)
I’m 19 years old I have had my explorer for about 7-8 months, 2018 XLT, it’s bubbling as well on my hood I’m pissed I’m getting a new hood for free!!!!!
Wait til you water pump goes bad and it’s not if it will it’s when it will.. your bill will be $1300-1700 in shops like firestone more if you take it to ford lol
I have a 2018 Explorer with the hood problem, I originally thought it to be a chip from a stone, but then I noticed that the paint was blistering up across the whole hood in the front, and on the underside too. This problem developed when I had less than 5K on it, I now have 9K on it and I'm still waiting on Ford to fix it... P.S. - Great video, thank you very much for the information. 👍👍
Just purchased this vehicle (2013 model) & had the p1450 code & had to replace the purge control valve for $130 bucks that wasnt even covered by the warranty. Good video!! Now i know what to look forward to if it happens at all...great info!!
I have a 2011 Explorer XLT. only 78k miles on it now all hell is breaking loose. Thanks Ford!! Have to replace the sync system APIM. and the fuel sensor. Both big $$$$ fixes. Get into those.
I don't understand why Ford couldn't design a new motor mount to allow the use of the 3.5 with the external water pump like the one in the f150. I looked into trying to retrofit those pieces onto the 3.5 in my Taurus but the water passages are cast differently in the front of the block :(
2019 Explorer 78,000 miles. The hood flaking issue. Hi I took mine in last year 2023 to ford. They told me I was out of warranty at 36,000 miles. I pressed the issue that the paint is /was only 3.5-4 years old and if they wouldn’t stand behind this problem they have a bigger issue than paint. The adjuster took pictures and told me that he would forward them to ford headquarters and get back with me to let me know what they said. 4 days later he told me ford was going to honor the paint issue. Within a week they ordered a new hood. Pained it and called me in to the dealership to swap it out. I was happy that they did the honorable thing and stood by it. On another note. While I had it in for the hood, I asked them to replace the A-pillar windshield gaskets that were all cracked up and gooey (nasty) while they had it in their sights. In which they told me they wouldn’t do anything for that. I then ordered left and right replacements, swapped them out and now they are exactly the same mess. Also just got a letter from ford saying the a pillar covers are recalled for flying off while driving. Which could cause injuries or car crashes. So… I’ll see what comes of the gooey gaskets when my number comes up. Good luck all! Good video as usual sir!
Rear brakes are a constant issue on these. Had a 2013 & 2018 and both needed rear pads within the first 20k. If you live in the rust belt you need to clean and adjust all the brakes every 6 months or so due to the design of the calipers as well.
I'm at 74,200 on my 2015 with all original brakes. The dealership said it's time to start watching them at the last service because they're starting to get close. Actually getting ready to replace the vehicle, so may never have to do it.
I recently wreaked my 09 Escape probably tired. I seen a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT Sport mix with many blackouts and a 2.Echo boost with 34k miles. It still had the previous owners address age about 75 which should’ve been removed. The Chevy dealer offered me a powertrain warranty as long as I own this. After applying for my loan so they would hold it I had to wait for my AAA check about a week. Now this is where it goes south. Being an auto mechanic for 15 years and still do my own vehicles I noticed the rotors and ceramic pads. This happens in Michigan when the car sits to long and the rotors rust. My wife was given her late mom’s 06 Chevy Impala with 12k miles. Here rotors and hardware had to be replaced. I had the Explorer a week and the battery failed they fixed it. A couple days later my shifter wouldn’t go out of park so I opened the side console and extended the lever pushed the brake and put it in neutral called my salesman they picked it up cost 1,000. After they returned it I was leaving for work at 4am being to dark to see what I’m doing I drove her car in and left a note. If I have one more shifter problem that’s a lemon law and get my money back. Other than those problems it’s a tight smooth and peppy SUV so far.
The door panel fabric tends to delaminate from the substrate as well. Not a very hard fix, but a very unnecessary problem to have. Ours started to delaminate at about 60,000 miles.
2-of-2 messages. The Explorer 2012 Limited is from only 1 owner, the same lady, most of the 103,330 mileage is from home to the hospital and back, she is a doctor and the Explorer is in good standing and well treated by her, let me know your opinnion please, is important for me, Peter.. 9-27-2022 Thanks a lot..
I wish you would have mentioned the water pump issue possibly causing a total engine failure or the PTU unit for the vehicles equipped with AWD! Those are the 2 that should ALWAYS be mentioned!
Ray McIntire frequently change PTU fluid as it bakes in heat behind the exhaust tucked up in the engine, I change mine on both my explorers every 30k miles it’s only about a quart of fluid in there. If you do that you’re fine. I’ve had no issues
Also keep up on oil changes and don’t let you’re coolant age too much and flush that out you’re fine, a lot of vehicle problems are caused by the owners not properly caring for their cars. Just changing the oil and putting gas in it is not enough if you plan on keeping it for over 100k miles
This might be true with some of these things but my kids wife has a explorer ST and I can tell you when you step on it you leave whatever is next to you in the dust actually this SUV has had zero problems
My spouse has an 18 Sport and it’s had replacements of times that concern me. 1. Both turbos replaced at 29K miles. (I had to drive behind the explorer with a mechanic to show him the smoke coming out) 2. Transmission was clunking at low speed. It was the transmission mount. 3. Rough idle at times, Dealer cannot duplicate this. Overall worried about long term ownership. We shall see
Does anyone else love the way this guy says Vehicle?!?! Adds an exotic "r" sound! All kidding aside, 1AAuto makes great parts and videos, please keep them coming! Also have this guy do all the videos, he's fu$king GOLD!
Did the steering feel very loose and wobbly and like he said, start going a different direction? Is there any other way to know if they need to be replaced?
i own 2013 with 279k miles, the only thing i changed in the engine bay was the water pump and that was a long time ago, never had troubles withe engine or transmission till now...
Yes me too Ihave 2012 it's milge about 433 km it is very very relible i just replaced water pump and this problrm was also in all ford engins v6 3.5L it is great car
You forgot about the PTU (AKA Transfer Case). They grenade around 100k the fluid needs to be changed early on and regularly. I put a NPT drain plug in mine. Did it at 85k and the fluid was black and sludge. I only got about 1/4qt out of it. After flushing it about 5 times I finally started to get the full 1/2qt out of it. Drove it 500 miles and did it again. Finally got it coming out clean after 3 more flushes. And don't forget about the water pump that can fail and take out the motor. Change that coolant earlier than recommended too!
Your videos are very helpful I thank you for helping me keep my vehicle safe. I trust your knowledge you are very professional I am a 2014 Ford Explorer police interceptor owner.
You missed quite a few. PTU, the transfer case bricks itself after the fluid leaks out or turns into mud. Electric power steering, yeah its very expensive for a new rack. VVT solenoids, they stick causing cam/crank correlation codes. Front lower rear control arm bushings. They get all sloppy and the car is all over the road. Cat converters, throw a P0420/p0430 and are garbage. Police models have an extended warranty on this. Rear wheel bearings, they get noisy and fuse themselves to the spindle due to aluminum to steel dissimilar metal corrosion. Front Upper strut bearings, get all creeky.
Also the high pitched sound that can be heard in 2018 5th gens equipped with the home power outlet. That was so annoying to deal with, pulled the fuse until I was able to get to the dealer. Also had the hood and panel near the gas tank paint bubble, 1 month in a 2020 loaner for them to order hood and repaint nigh the hood and that panel. Ended up trading it in for the 2020 after falling in love with it over the 30 days.
I loved the article. I have a 2012 explorer only problem I have had with my explorer was the steering rack going out on me and the alternator go bad. My explorer over 215k miles on it
We had a 2011 XLT 4WD, 94k miles, from upstate NY and although it did its job for 6 years. We had to part from it because of that water pump. I'm mechanically inclined and I did not want to suffer through that job by myself. I could have done it eventually but to be honest, I didn't want to. Also, one major thing that happened to us was that the rear frame of the body's weld started to go out and we got rain water into the spare tire area. I legit fixed it with flex seal liquid rubber sealant by detaching the rear hatch and coating it along the frame. Did the same with the sunroof/moonroof gaskets too because rain leaked into it and shorted out the hazard light switch that never turned off until you replaced the whole center console. Will never go ford again.
Had the same issue with water leaking in through the rear hatch. Seams were cracked on both sides at the top. Fairly common issue unfortunately. I have a 2p12 with 145k and no major issues other than the leak. I will be getting rid of it within the year though
I'm speechless! I've been having the issue with the wrench. So irritating. I'm putting my shoes on right now to go inspect the throttle bottle. Great great tip. 🙏
I have a 13 xlt awd with the 3.5. Issues to date were toe links, rear caliper, broken seat back in the rear, tie rod end, sway bar end links. The biggest one was where the roof and side body panel were glued together over the 3rd row glass had a leak that took the dealer 4 trips and 6 months to find. Its a nice car. Comfortable roomy rides well and has good power.
My 2015 police receptor utility had the links break by driving over train tracks at about 14 miles an hour they're made out of zinc alloy and it's part of its 75 mile an hour crash test safety feature those are meant to break to absorb energy if you're rear-ended I replaced mine was steel haven't had an issue in two years
I have 118K on my 2017. I have not had any of these problems. It has honestly been a great car. Only recently I am hearing a clunking somewhere on the passenger front. My son took the tire off and sees nothing obviously wrong and it doesn’t make the noise when jacked up. It is mostly when turning right. Any ideas? It drives and handles great. No vibration, etc.
Very informative video. I've been shopping around for this vehicle. You helped a lot to know what to look for. I encountered the hood issue on a pre-owned model that I test drove recently.
There’s now a recall in some states over the timing belt. There is also a pump issue. My sister just had to pay for both to be replaced. Not a cheap fix. She has a 2017.

2015 Ford Explorer Sport sunroof leaking. Apparently its common in this generation of Explorers & even models without a sunroof still have water leaking
Many thinks for the clear demonstration, i just sold a g37 due to exhaust leaks and CO in the cabin, it is my nightmare, and i will definitely avoid buying this model if 1.4 million complained about CO issues
Ha, evap purge solenoid. The hardest part is getting the hose off with that green connector. You completely skipped that part. Don't need a vacuum gauge either, just disconnect wiring connector and hose. Start the car and see if you can feel vacuum from the port. If so, the purge valve is bad.
@4:07 - complains door is ajar leaving the dome light on, doesn't notice that the Explorer he's looking at is the police model - and those dome lights are NOT wired into switched power. Also doesn't mention about the PTU grenading due to its location above the exhaust manifold (less of an issue on turbo models due to forced circulation cooling), or the cat-headers cracking due to garbage design work by Ford.
If you have a aftermarket performance tune. Pay attention to the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. The factory is a 2 BAR. Most aftermarket tuning uses a 3 bar. If you remove the time make sure you re install the OEM MAP (2 bar) until the tune is re installed..........(AMHIK...lol!!

As a mechanic, this list is a fail. The only things on this list I've personally dealt with on these vehicles are the purge valve and toe links. Far more common than either of those things are wheel bearings, inner rearward bushings on the rear upper control arms, inner rearward bushings on the front lower control arms, and front lower ball joints.
Very clear. Informative. My vehicle have no. 1 issue. Noisy and slow while accelerating..It’s increasing over weeks. . Not sure on repair cost..¡ Need to check with garage.
Hello i liked very much this video. I bought a 2013 ford explorer last year. I being having a transmission problem sometimes i put it on d to go and seams that doesn't get in gear took it to the mecanic they replace something on the shifting but did not fix the problem. Any ideas. Thanks
Have a 2013 sport, Bought in 14 with 8k miles on it. From the second week i had it, it wouldnt start when it was hot out (75 degrees or hotter). Put key in, turn it on, all accessory lights came on, go to run...nothing. ford shrugged, said sorry not sorry.. dealership could never duplicate the problem. Several stranded hours and a lot of swear words later (on top of many, many videos of the issue) and it would magically work. I replaced batteries in my fobs, unhooked the battery, let it "cool off" and still continued to have the problem. I installed an aftermarket remote start, been happening less. *Timing chain stretches *Hood issues *Toe links addressed, drives worse after getting replaced *Rear liftgate rusting through, and above the windshield, same problem. *Door handles break (I live in MN, guess it shouldn't be surprising) *Sync system doesnt turn on *Clear coat peeled off wheels less than a year after I bought it *Consistent battery drain- go through a battery a year, even on a trickle charger..since i bought it. I love that thing, but man, if i could get a new one with a key and no issues i might just let it go.
Wow. The carbon monoxide poisoning issue has officially put me off from considering a ford suv. I have a ford fiesta and it's given me it's fair share of issues I've been able to resolve. Got 3 kids now and needed an SUV. It won't be a 5th gen ford or a ford at all. Looking at Toyota Highlanders now.
Great video! My 2015 Ford Explorer Sport is peeling all around the vehicle. Is there a recall for the peeling paint? I could post pictures of the peeling paint all around the edges of the vehicle and the white aluminum is exposed. I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited, owned it since 2005 that has the throttle body issue. I remove it and clean it frequently. I had a 1994 Ford Explorer (totaled) that the body rusted away and it has the dreaded clunk when is placed in gear but those are my only issues with the 2004. I keep them cleaned and serviced. 1984, 2004 and 2015 engines runs great with no issues. Your thoughts on the paint peeling and what I can do? Contact ford?
I got a 03. Runs great, suspension bushings and transmission are my only downfalls so far. Other then that, the 03's run great, esp if they're 4.6 (if they're V6. You're kinda screwed when it comes time for the timing chain). My grandma went and bought a 2017 Explorer and the result was the same. The paint they put on that car is THIN.

I maintain a fleet of these,100+ units, they are car, they all have problems, vics were easier to fix, it those have been out of production for almost 10 years, this is what we have for a replacement, may as well embrace it, because all of them have issues.
@@merlin0152 i was planning to get a sport one of the same year as yours. Whats your thoughts on it?
All cars come with there own problems my family runs a used car lot and every vehicle is know for there problems. Parts age and have to be replaced regardless of the vehicle, I have a 2013 ford explorer and I love it was less problems then my previous suv a gmc acadia i had a two page list of issues, I only had 2 issues with my explorer my husband is a mechanic and fixed it in a day
@@merlin0152 what issues do they have I almost am going to buy one?
2018 I just reached 100.000 today,
- Water pump had a very small leak
- the Infotainment processor went bad
- rear wheel hub started making noise
I still got warranty on the vehicle so I got everything changed fast, tbh the infotainment processor was a little pricey aside from that I didn’t had any major problems with the vehicle, I’d definitely recommend it, amazing vehicle for the money.
I had a 2012 Explorer XLT with the 3.5L V6 engine. At about 200k miles the water pump started leaking. This is internally in the engine and runs off of the timing chain. A very expensive fix to say the least. Luckily no coolant had gotten into the oil.
Would you buy the same vehicle if it had 90k miles on it!
Michael, my explore needed a water pump at 90k. 2k job
I did spend a day looking at replacement options, but having totally dismissed Chrysler after a warranty fight years ago, and Chevy issues too, I'm running out of manufacturers. ;-)
What dealership ?
I’m 19 years old I have had my explorer for about 7-8 months, 2018 XLT, it’s bubbling as well on my hood I’m pissed I’m getting a new hood for free!!!!!
This was super informative and interesting... however I’ve never had a SINGLE one of these problems, nor any problem with my 2011 Explorer. :)
What model do you have
Wait til you water pump goes bad and it’s not if it will it’s when it will.. your bill will be $1300-1700 in shops like firestone more if you take it to ford lol
neither have i! only issue is with the ac. i have the 2011 ford explorer limited.
How many miles are you running on currently
The majority of people probably don't have these problems. It's the other hundreds of thousands of them...

I have a 2011 Explorer XLT. only 78k miles on it now all hell is breaking loose. Thanks Ford!! Have to replace the sync system APIM. and the fuel sensor. Both big $$$$ fixes. Get into those.
Forgets the water pump bricking the motor when it fails.
Came to comment the same thing. Can't believe they didn't mention that. Such a pain in the butt to change it also.

I don't understand why Ford couldn't design a new motor mount to allow the use of the 3.5 with the external water pump like the one in the f150. I looked into trying to retrofit those pieces onto the 3.5 in my Taurus but the water passages are cast differently in the front of the block :(
and the locked up electric steering that leaves you stranded on the side of the highway
That was a problem was fixed in 2011.
I appreciate this video! The explanation of the potential causes of carbon monoxide leaking into the cab were extremely helpful!

+Jeffery Wattie Thanks for the feedback!
+JD JD Thanks for the feedback!
I have a 2015. Changed front brakes at 100k, rear brakes at 120k.
I’m on 80,000 on Original Brakes 2018
This might be true with some of these things but my kids wife has a explorer ST and I can tell you when you step on it you leave whatever is next to you in the dust actually this SUV has had zero problems
my carbon monoxide and hood was done under recall. its a 2016 xlt with a V6 NA and I owned it since new and its still running strong. love it!

1. Both turbos replaced at 29K miles. (I had to drive behind the explorer with a mechanic to show him the smoke coming out)
2. Transmission was clunking at low speed. It was the transmission mount.
3. Rough idle at times, Dealer cannot duplicate this.

Did the steering feel very loose and wobbly and like he said, start going a different direction? Is there any other way to know if they need to be replaced?
I own a 2014 explorer xlt fwd 3.5L with 129k miles nothing i had to do us replace the fuel pump. I haven't had any of those issues with mine.
Agreed these vehicles are pretty reliable.
i own 2013 with 279k miles, the only thing i changed in the engine bay was the water pump and that was a long time ago, never had troubles withe engine or transmission till now...
+dodgeguyz Thanks for the feedback!
Ha my PTU just cracked itself in half
You are correct ,This all stuff I’ve seen working in a shop for 15 years.
My PTU just crapped after 118K ... nice bill....
My explorer over 215k miles on it
How much did you end up paying for the steering rack repair?
I have a 2012 also. Well maintained, and I have 205,000 miles on it. Love it!
You hit the nail with this video. my 2012 explorer does exactly what you described on problem #1. I guess I need to order the throttle body.

My 2015 police receptor utility had the links break by driving over train tracks at about 14 miles an hour they're made out of zinc alloy and it's part of its 75 mile an hour crash test safety feature those are meant to break to absorb energy if you're rear-ended I replaced mine was steel haven't had an issue in two years
Do you have a brand recommendation? I got a 13 FPIU
I used a bug deflector from Amazon for about $80 for the chipping hood paint. Covered it right up.
Right on target ! So far my entire 2014 Explorer was ripped apart due to CO. The purge valve went and I did myself.

Damn so I shouldn’t buy one huh

Are those expensive repairs?

*Timing chain stretches
*Hood issues
*Toe links addressed, drives worse after getting replaced
*Rear liftgate rusting through, and above the windshield, same problem.
*Door handles break (I live in MN, guess it shouldn't be surprising)
*Sync system doesnt turn on
*Clear coat peeled off wheels less than a year after I bought it
*Consistent battery drain- go through a battery a year, even on a trickle charger..since i bought it.
I love that thing, but man, if i could get a new one with a key and no issues i might just let it go.

2 problems i have had with a 2015 ford explorer is problems cranking and corrosion, hidden under the battery connectors. Also vent actuators.
