There are certain areas in the Sierras that accumulate more snow than other areas at the same elevation. Donner Summit and the Highway 88 and Highway 4 corriders are good examples. In heavy snow years, they have gotten over 600 inches of snow, and even though the snow settles and gets compacted over the winter months, you can still have over 30 ft. of snow on the ground in the heaviest snowfall areas.
The deep snow, early in the video, is around the town of Soda Springs Ca., when I lived there as a child, when the school bus came to pick me up I would stand on the “burm”( the snow next to the road) and my feet were a meter higher than the large yellow school bus.
Donner Pass gets more snow, 20+ feet on average, than anywhere else in the world! I lived nearby and saw, on some hillsides, wooden covers (like tunnels) extending for long distances, protecting the train tracks from deep snow, to prevent freight trains from bogging down or even derailing.
@@dennischampion5635 California is heavily dependent on the snowpack in Sierra for water supplies during the spring and summer months when typically there is no significant rainfall. That's what I said about 6 years ago. I'm still saying it😀 Most of the snow footage was shot around Soda Springs, CA. So far this year we've had about 300" of snow. If you don't like snow, it's definitely not the place you want to be.
California has some wild weather. Most don't expect it or think about it. In a three day span I saw 3' of snow fall, 8-10" of rain and flooding. Huge waves crash over seawalls into towns, chased a tornado warned storm and covered non-thunderstorm wind gusts topple trees all over the capital.
To see this video and all that it contains, is just so incredible!! I know they said that California was hit five years ago I think with a bad storm, but I don’t remember a storm being as severe as this one. where would they be without the internal combustion engine right now
Stuck in the white Tesla.
driving electric cars or hover cars if we where not put back by combustion engine. wireless power wouldn't even need to charge you cell. electric motor and car were invented first but cant make money if we all just get a better life
@@heyby8764 the first hybrid was built in 1929 why do you think it didn't take off?
@@coryament first electric car was 1834. they needed no gas and less repairs.
by 1890 they sold them but more money was put into developing gas engines because of them reasons
@@heyby8764 and 100 years later the electric still cant replace the internal combustion engine
Amazing footage.
🇳🇱🌷🌷Dutchie feeling so sorry for all you Californians stuck in snow or new “rivers”. Take care and hope you’ll be well soon. Suggestion from these wetlands for better drainage: we use more paving stones and less asphalt in communal areas.
California is covered in asphalt! Great suggestion, likely deliver happen!
Very sweet thank you. Everyone is scrambling to run faster on their hamster wheel. While the people on the city boards are always people that show up from out of town and do whatever against the will of the people. There is little community left. Zero control, before they at-least have the allusion.
I live in Canada and we haven't had any snow this year in Nova Scotia
Vos vidéos avec votre drone sont magnifique 👍
Now on my list of places to go. Thx for all your hard work and the variety of places and events you cover.
I am so unprepared to live up in those mountains.
Stay safe and I hope you can get help. 🤗
That's what I said about 6 years ago. I'm still saying it😀 Most of the snow footage was shot around Soda Springs, CA. So far this year we've had about 300" of snow. If you don't like snow, it's definitely not the place you want to be.
Winter Is Coming.
It’s hard to believe that; that winter wonderland has made its home in California of all places
@@mrhyde3029 well I love snow and it’s hard to believe that well that part of California is a winter wonderland of all places
Excellent Video Thank You
Good footage.
In case some didn't know that California is not all sunshine and beaches.
Winter Is Coming.
Water is so powerful I don't believe a seawall is much help (just saying)
Well this is the mountains…
@@WxChasing And it was awesome!!
It's going to take forever for all that snow to melt!!!!
Not long, But once it does, it's going to flood the low grounds all over again.
It usually takes a few months, but it will depend on what happens between now and April. Generally, flooding is not a problem with spring snowmelt.
@@jenniferroberts7581 Thank you!👍. Let's hope no major flooding!
Great montage
I live About 45 Mins Away From Here How Come I Don't Get Any Snow Lol 😅
Lower elevation, maybe ! 😬
cause it al ready filled up with snowflakes
@@paulsupronojr.4976 oh lol 😂 thank for telling me I should of thought of that I’m dumb
Beautiful pictures. We enjoyed 'em.
To see this video and all that it contains, is just so incredible!!
I know they said that California was hit five years ago I think with a bad storm, but I don’t remember a storm being as severe as this one.
Stay safe and let’s hope by Wednesday this storm will dissipate. I know there’s warnings about Monday.
Stay safe, warm and dry. As much as you can.🤗💗
Nah, we have always had storms like this on Donner Summit! It’s great, but you have to be prepared and use common sense.
@@jenniferroberts7581 Yes, I can see those who’ve never spent a winter up there would be in shock. Good thing to know to being prepared. Take care!!
I've lived here in Truckee for 23 years but this is the worst I've ever seen in terms of the snow.
@@just.jude. Seriously? My family has had a cabin at Soda Springs for 60 years, and I've lived in Truckee for the past 6 years - NO WAY is this the "worst". In 2011, we had 18 feet on the ground at Soda Springs - currently we have about 9. Yes, the past two weeks have been a lot all at once, but far from record-setting.
This is not record setting but given the forecast for another 5' in the next few days and it only being January it's got record potential. If not for so much rain and sleet falling the snow pack would be much higher as well. Either way, it's really incredible to see, particularly for those that do not get to see it in person. Plus it is fantastic to put a dent in the drought.
First so many big fore’s, then so much snow. “ fire & ice”. Hope you people there appreciate your water reservoirs are filling up. Better all rain than fires everywhere.
We get a lot of snow here in Utah but nothing like that. ☃️
now you have. congratulations
Keep seeding those clouds... we love it here...
Iam 40. When i was a kid sometimes there was snow like this i my area. (Edit.: okay half of these 🙂) Now nothing at all. I live in eastern Europe.
Same here, I am in Vienna, as a kid we had often snow. Now absolutely nothing, less and less every year. I miss it
I wish we would have this much snow in my town!
Thanks for Video Nice Nice
I don’t even think that we could handle that much rain at one time. Back in 1996 we had a storm come thru the north Willamette Valley that flattened the Willamette River Water Fall in Oregon City. Along the River in many low area we had sever flooding. It hard to prepare for . Especially with all of the fire damage there.
Whitney Webb.
love the drone footage.
Winter Is Coming.
Great perspective of all of these events. Keep it going.
I live in Miami but I don't like snows because I have experienced hard fall of snow and that was terrible for me I can't go to work and I hardly feed that only made me to dislike snow. Greetings from Miami. how are you doing
The levels of snow were similar back in the 70's...wasn't that unusual in winter here in Nor Cal. Sometimes it was like a single tract toboggan ride after the road plows went through up in the Tahoe neighborhoods. Many would have to dig tunnels to get to their front doors...was awesome! The weather has Always cycled throughout the years...sometimes it's dry and sometimes it's wet ..Very Normal.
Ok boomer
Well done! Thx!
This is actually more normal than not.
Winter Is Coming.
Good stuff.
