ASF's - How and why I breed ASF's for my Ball Pythons - African Soft Fur Rats

  • Alrighty then, this one is lengthy. I cover ASF's and how I breed them. Hopefully it is thorough and not rambling. I feel like I hit on all the points needed for success but likely didn't empathize that setting up a colony will be a challenge at first.
    ASF's are one of those things that don't work, until they do. Then it ain't rocket surgery.
    Main points:
    First time mommas will only have a couple babies and will likely eat them
    Nursing mommas need higher protien or they will eat their babies
    Fresh water supply is necessary 100% of the time or you will have issues
    ASF's like to be clean, don't skip your maintenance
    A well established ASF's colony isn't mean or evil

    Awesome Video, have watched it a few times already! I have a few ASF’s I was running 3 to 1 and my problem was I couldn’t get them to breed and when they did they would eat there young! I got a few new colonies and giving it a second shot. Thanks for the info.

    Great video man. Ive been breeding them for about 6 months and the bit regarding the cannibal moms was really helpful. Until now i just tried to cull the ones displaying the behavior. Looking forward to trying the dietary adjustment.

    Hello! Thank your for sharing your experience. I have two colonies at the moment. I also feed them all kind of insects. They all eat meal worms and superworms. But females love to eat even big dubia roaches. My question is, are 8 formales to many for only one male ? I see them maitig, but he is getting beat up lately.

    How many asfs do you think you produce weekly? Or stated differently with the one fb10 rack and your fb70 grow out rack how many ball pythons do you feel you cam feed?

    • @BriansReef
      @BriansReef  2 роки тому +1

      Hey, If you run a 1:4 and clean weekly then you should easily produce more than 1000 per month. Maybe even double that if you start to cull females that only have 8-10 babies and only breed those females who drop 15-18 at a time. Depends on how much time you put into the colony to be honest.

    Great informational video. I live in North Central Texas. Do you know where I can purchase ASFs to start a colony?

    So I have a ton of ASFs I've been breeding for my balls and I found out you should only give them to animals that you plan to keep and should never feed them asfs unless you have a readily accessible source because they are addictive and trying to switch a BP back to regular American lab rats has been proven to be pretty tough.

    I saw you had a bag of pine shavings. I’m not sure if you knew but pine and cedar shavings are the most toxic for rats. Just a heads up?

      actually kiln dried pine shavings are completely safe, raised rats for years using it

    BALL pythons in the wild also rob bird nests and eat baby chicks. While they may be clumsy climbers they can and still climb and do if given the opportunity!

      My ASF turn into biters when they have babies.
      In my colonies the Cinnamon’s are the most aggressive. The tan & white are gentler while the grey & white are unpredictable.

    Good video, but I have one question, how well do they work for large female ball pythons who would normally take a large fancy rat? Especially when it's time to fatten them up for breeding, do you have to feed them multiple asf's?

    • @royalkreationz
      @royalkreationz 2 роки тому +2

      Just fine. Actually better probably. The females won't be "hungry". I feed every 10 days, and my girls eat like crazy

    • @watercityreptiles
      @watercityreptiles 8 місяців тому

      Agreed. I’ve recently converted to a primary ASF diet for my BPs and have seen great results. The females tend to grow faster and their waste is smaller. My opinion is that the ASF have better nutrition so less goes into their waste. I do throw a regular rat in there from time to time and they take the rat with no issue. I really only have one male that won’t take anything but ASF. The rest of my collection don’t hesitate between ASF or regular rats

    • @watercityreptiles
      @watercityreptiles 8 місяців тому +1

      I also shorten the time between feedings for my breeder females. So instead of one med-large rat every 10-14 days I’ll do a large ASF every 7-10 days.

      ASF rats are regulated. You can’t ship live ones across state lines, only frozen can be shipped across the country. Live can only be shipped within the same state. Your best bet would be to keep searching for someone in your state that breeds and would ship to you

    Mice are intelligent and social creatures, people that breed them into existence to feed to snakes and reptiles who don't want or enjoy being pets are sick and twisted. Mice and rats are more intelligent than dogs. This animal abuse for the sake of imprisoning a snake in a glass box for you to gawk at. Such cruelty.

    • @hammylover4life225

      As i agree its the circle of life if you have a dog or cat you feed them meat that means innocent cows were killed to feed them its no different for snakes they need to eat
