    I got a new BP 5 weeks ago & couldn't get him eat anything saw this video on ASF rats found someone with ASF got one from him put it in the enclosure and about an hour later my new boy had it coiled up & ate it. Big Thank You to Balls2U & to Mutation Creation for pointing this video out in one of there videos.

    Just had my first litter this year. Only have 9 snakes but it still cost me $60 or so if they all eat. So I'm getting out ahead of it and can sell or freeze. I do have an enormous deep freeze in the room. Also give them treats or granola bars and other veggies

    I feel like seller/ breeders need to diverse or make clear at very least that snakes only ever ate -- . Nothing worse than getting snake spoiled to ASF. Just hard to get alot of areas normally not impossible but definitely rarer. Of course buyer should be asking anyway but a lot get excited and never think about it untill they have a spoiled snake on hands lol. Great video man!

    i feed asf aswell. i find you take a 100gr asf compare to a 175gr rat to the same snake... the poo from the asf is roughly 10gr and the rat poo is 100 gr. so the rat is a lot of waste.. be like us paying for a big plate of food but throwing half out.

    This is something I've been thinking about recently breeding rats. I have a small collection, hand full of boas, a pair of white lipped pythons. And with it getting a hassle to get hold of might be an empty market in my area. Multi I've not tried feeding because of the size however I am surprised how far a 50g multi can go. Very tempting for the dumerils that are fussy and usually need chick or quail.

  • @StanWatt.
    @StanWatt. 4 роки тому +2

    I agree with you to a point. ASF's are the most desirable food, imo, however, breeders like Justin Kobylka has nothing but the humble rat because, as far as I know, it's illegal to keep them in his state. As for colour, we part ways there because genes play a bigger part. When I did breed them they got sow rolls but they always got mixed seeds, fruit and veg daily, not just as treats.
    I really need a proper rat breeding stand but I'm utterly hopeless with my hands. How many breeding pairs of multis do you have for how many snakes?
    Great video, Gavin. Interesting as always.

    • @Balls2U
      @Balls2U  4 роки тому +2

      I did a split clutch with a friend of mine a few years back, he had 3 snakes from the clutch and feed them on rats on the same day with the same size rodent and I did the same with my 3 but on Multis..... The results convinced me that Multis work better..... Growth rate, colours feeding response etc..... All snakes involved in the test was normal double het for albino/pied so no visible morph involved......
      If your breeding normal rats then it's 1 breeding female for every snake.... If it's Multis then it's 2 breeder females per snake as Multis take longer to grow up. Thanks for tuning in Stan 👍🏼

    • @StanWatt.
      @StanWatt. 4 роки тому

      @@Balls2U Just wondering what it is about the multis that improves the colour. I know quality food is better for everything, there is absolutely no doubt about that. If I can even get someone to make me a few racks for breeding multis then that is definitely the way to go. As I said I did breed multis but the little fekkers always escaped and cost me a fortune in replacing cables to my phone, heaters, thermostats, routers ....god, man, they were costing me a fortune LOL.
      Hoping to get your Pastel Vanilla het clown male breeding to some females next year. He's turned into a beauty, no doubt about that and the sweetest thing you can pick up. My only issue with asf is that they grow slow. It's hard for me to breed them consistently to an adult weight to feed my larger snakes. I try to only feed my holdback males, some females asf. I transition them at a certain weight to normal rats because it's cheaper to buy and feed over their entire growth span.

    Hi Balls2u. Can I ask your opinion please.
    I have a male BP 3.5 years old brought him from a baby. He lives in a 3.10 × 2 ft vivarium with two main hides one at each end of vivarium with one end being the hot end. His also has various little bits to hide in throughout vivarium. Now for the question hehe.
    In the last year or so I have selected to wait until I can see his predator instinct (me and my wife call it pouncy, like he is ready for a prey to walk bye) before I feed him. This could be anything from 4 - 8 weeks sometimes more. I also like for him to pass his last meal before I will feed him again.
    Looking at your video above I would say his a good weight, looks healthy to my inexperienced knowledge 🤦‍♂️
    But I'm I doing the right thing? Should I in fact offer him more regularly?
    The current way I feed him, he always takes the medium size rat.
    However after 1-3 days after first meal he is pouncy again & basically takes two medium size rats per meal
    And then like I mentioned I wait for the next pouncy look which can be as long as 8 weeks or more.
    Thanks, love your content FYI

    ASF rats are not the natural food source of the Ball Python. Their native ranges don't overlap, ASFs are native to Southern Africa, Balls Western and Central. They may be closer to their natural food source, but a Ball Python would almost never encounter the ASFs we feed in captivity in the wild.

      @Balls2U  2 роки тому +1

      Six different genetic groups can be distinguished in different regions: one in western Africa, one in central Africa, one in southern Africa and three in eastern Africa.... the ASF we have in Captivity is a mixture of 2 of the groups found in the wild including the central ASF..... making them a 'natural food source'
