Rats are probably the most under sourced item when it comes to snake keeping and there never seems to be enough supply. In this video I share some helpful tips and tricks I've learned over my time breeding rodents. So take a moment and see if you know all this or if there is something you can add to your routine to help you maximize your rodent production for your snakes.

You are doing exactly what you are supposed to by treating them as pets, regardless whether they are feeders. They make awesome pets. I commend you for this, and wish more people would see it this way. It is difficult on the emotions too to euthanize them after raising them, so I just kept mine as pets. Oh well, rodentpro it is.. unless you ship.
Working on that aspect now to be able to ship. When we get that set up I’ll definitely let you know
@@JonFealy Sounds good. Keep up the great work..
Thanks for the shout out sir! 😘
Of course y’all put out great information I’ll always support those that are trying to help others on the journey
Damn, they are just to freaking cute. I would like to breed my own feeders, but can't get myself to get over te cuteness of those fluffballs. Sticking to F&T for now. Thanks for the video man!
Cool video, "Let's Rodent" is another great channel for breeding rats, mice, and asfs.
I’ll have to check them out thanks 🙏🏻
You tell them man, love your videos my husband was live with you a few days ago. Old Troy City Reptiles I'm the wife Melany Ramos. Next time you guys go live we all will be there Shawn myself and our son.
I appreciate y’all’s support so much! Thanks for stopping in and watching!
Great video
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
You're my hero!
Hero is a strong word…
Nice video 👏
Thank you
I loved the video
Thank you so much!🙏🏻 what was your favorite part?
Having been there from the beginning of this venture..... I must say how proud I am of your growth in knowledge and product. Loves❤
Thanks momma I appreciate that! It’s all coming together
I am curious about the water bottles. We currently have about 6 aquarium tanks of mice and our biggest issue is the bottles dripping constantly. We have tried cleaning them really well and try to keep them perfectly upright. Do yours leak at an angle like that or are they better that way? I swear we are constantly changing out cages because the substrate gets sopping wet.
So they may drip a bit at first when I put them in but they pressurize eventually, if yours aren’t I would check that the rubber washer inside is placed in correctly, or is not damaged. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions you may have
I run water bottles only as well!!! My reasons are the same as yours plus drowning an entire colony.😊
Yeah I had it fail one time and let me tell you that the smell never seems to leave your nostrils it’s not a experience I wish on anybody.
When you add mealworms, approximately how much do you add to their tubs and how often do you add the mealworms?
I give them mealworms once a week and I throw about 30-50 in with some romaine
I do water buckets and bottles both so more then one nipple and babies have easier time reaching the nipples on the bottles.
That’s a good point as well! Sometime one nipple just ain’t enough
@@JonFealySo THAT'S why we have 2! 🤣

Circling back on something I have been using.. In addition to all of the greens, seeds, etc. I give mine, I use 4health mature formula dog food, and have been getting excellent muscle tone and low fat in my rats. It is rated 20/8 protein and fat, and they bounce off the wall with energy. I have never used mazuri, and probably never will, but just sharing another option that has been working for me. Any update on you being able to ship?
I appreciate you sharing! At this time we’ve decided to close operations for customers and downsize for the time being as we are preparing to move across Texas after we get settled and built back up we will grow it beyond what we have now and do shipping of frozen thawed.
@@JonFealy Sounds good, and best fortune on your new operation. Like I mentioned previously, please keep me informed. Take good care..
@@kumetu thank you we will definitely stay in touch
Are those water bottles being hit in the background?😅
They had just been cleaned and replaced so they all were going crazy for water 😆
Scouring the internet to see if mice and rats are compatible because I want to know if Justin and Mrs. Frisby ever had a chance in the Secret of Nimh?
Hybrids are never the answer, but love can find a way…
Maternity is sooo much work, going back to more colony breeding when the chickens are out this weekend and the rodent barn is redone.
So I’ve heard plus it’s just so much more feed!!
@Jon Fealy I never felt like I went through a ton of feed but the work and making sure I rotate just doesn't work for my schedule lol. Probably turning one freedom breeder rack into fully asf and then still do a little maternity with the other one
@@noblereptiles8353 oooh that’s would be awesome!
@@JonFealy How is it more feed? The pregnant and or working mother will eat the same amount of feed whether it's in its own bin or if it stays and has the litter in the colony bin.
@@GOCUTUBER in my head it’s because you would switch out the females so there would still be the same number of rats eating in the colony plus the maternity rack I just prefer colony and have great production from it
Great video, Jon. How do you keep track of your adults as far as age goes? I'm all over the place with mine, if one dies I toss a new young one in the bin to replace it. I've been fighting with all sorts of issues.
I do a strict 8 month breeding rotation they can usually do around 12 but the last four months don’t produce as much. I’ll be doing a whole series over the rat operations soon to help in each aspect.
Where's the link to the podcast you mentioned? Am I missing it?
It’s on my channel under the playlists.
the one that you mention the 2 womens names?@@JonFealy
@@CraigChapman-wu5rq oh it was Kathi and her husband Val (Valentino) from White Feather in Oklahoma. They have their own episode in there somewhere I wanna say episode 35-40
Thanks Bro, I'll look again!

What did you do for the ear infection??? Just curious what's safe to use that won't harm my snakes
There unfortunately is only two options from what I have learned keep it extra clean and the infection will clear up itself or you have to cull the animal as any antibiotic or mite drops make it unsafe for a snake to eat.
@JonFealy okay thank I just got a few rats to add to my collection and they started sneezing really bad trying to figure out what to do I just started breeding rats and learning
@@andrewwhitson8664 if they are sneezing a lot like a cold you can try a vet and antibiotics (but honestly it’s probably safer to cull) and get another group so you can continue to feed your collection. Also be aware hairless rats are more prone to Illness.
@JonFealy I got them yesterday and they were on aspin and i put them on kiln dryed pine how long should I wait before I make the decision to treat or cull ??

I would like to say that there's dogfood that contains the exact same nutrient profile that's similar to masuri 6F, I matched it. Here in Canada there is no supplier and a 50lb bag costs 90 at the stores around. I have successfully breed 1000s of rats without any health issue with a specific bag of dogfood at Costco for diet maintenence 18kgs for 46$. I did also notice they chose the dogfood > masuri. :) I also run 1 big black male with 6 or more females.
I e used lots of dog foods as well and I agree it is cheaper and also it is the same nutrient profile in most cases but I found they had an oily coat and sweat more in the heat that I live in. I’ve tried most foods for a while and they are all mostly the same the issue is that food alone is not enough supplementation is key to healthy animals much like us as humans with our vitamins to get everything we are supposed to get into our bodies due to our lack of diets
Lol those rats get cleaner water than I do.
Only the best in my house lol jk but where I live it was needed the water here is so horrible.
@Jon Fealy I get it!
My tap is bad here in TX
I was having a hard time getting them to breed well and experienced many deaths.
I'm not well off enough to afford filtering, but I treat my water with a measured betadine solution and it kills off the bacteria.
@@effobama1992 I’m also in TX I completely get it as long as we make it work and keep moving forward is all that matters glad you found a way
@@JonFealyI've noticed that my tap water has smelled very strongly of chlorine lately. Our water quality has been horrible since we moved here 5 years ago, though. It caused my dogs to vomit so we use bottled spring water for humans and animals.
@@kerseykrewzoo that’s a smart move I know plenty of people that do luckily with our systems we get pretty nice water now
Try kalmbach 23% rodent it's great and cheaper then f6 and less dusty
Thanks I’ve used it before it’s a good product but I get better overall production with 6F and my supplementation
I feel bad whenever I have to sacrifice my old males and females to prevent over inbreeding and to make room for the new males/females
That’s one of the hardest parts for me as well
You got so many rats you should think about investing in a professional rat rack
We’re looking into it but my priority is to get into a breeding building then to change out the racks. I agree though we could do more in a smaller place!
Too expensive for very little upside at all other than esthetics.
ASF?
I breed both we will be doing a series of how I set up and care for all of them I’m currently shooting the series.
ASFs are African Soft Furred Rats. They are ball pythons natural prey in the wild and can help get a snake eating again if they've been refusing.
lots of good stuff but also many mistakes
Care to elaborate on the mistakes?
Do you need a license to do that?
Where I live no
@@JonFealy not even to euthanize them?
@@Parttimehuman.official nope anyone can buy the material needed to euthanize
Sweet potatoes are toxic to rats
Good catch and I should have specified I give my asf sweet potatoes not the Norwegians thanks for keeping me honest. The food supplementation will be one of the first add ons to this video. It is also only toxic in the raw form
@@JonFealy Potatoes are mainly just starch (carbs) and adds no value to any small mammal's diet. The peels are the toxic part. They contain oxalates and solanine. Not good for any supplement that's for sure.
Dude you're background is noisy
Your right but they need the air movement to stay healthy and cool
@@JonFealy bro I understand, but for video purpose turn it off for five minutes I'm only trying to assist you ,I love what you do and can see you take pride and make a great effort to educate others but I'm only bringing that to your attention to help you improve otherwise 👍well done and thank you
It's not bothering me
it's YOU'RE breeding ... NOT "YOUR breeding". Jesus Christ....
