I use the paper bedding by Care fresh. I know it can be a little more expensive if you are a big breeder of these guys, but I breed them for my corn snake so I just have one colony right now. They could be allergic to the oils and stuff that is in the wood chip bedding, and it causes a lot of respiratory and skin issues.

I found some dietary additions helped with thin fur. IME ASFR need higher protein than rats and mice, especially when growing. I added some good quality dog kibble, freeze dried insects (bought in bulk online, marketed to chickens), and a bit of wild bird seed, and it increased both production (average 10 pups to average 14 pups) and coat condition. I also really like Sani-Chip bedding, or alternately chopped straw. Both have very minimal dust (Sani-Chip was developed for research rats who have delicate immune systems), and the chopped straw allows for chewing and shredding, though it's less absorbent than the Sani-Chip.

Coconut husk mixed with peat moss, cypress mulch, organic topsoil, crushed wood charcoal (not briquettes) mix well. Sprinkle with microgreen seeds, let grow. Add rats after the sprouts have grown up a bit. Or take dead leaves/let sit in a tub filled with hot water for 10 minutes, add leaves to top of the substrate They like this set up a lot, you can take the tainted bedding and drop in a large tub or can and compost, reuse in a few months. Get clean tubs started before rats need to be changed, some tubs will grow out with vegitation but the rats will take it out quickly. Otherwise you can add it to your snake enclosures to feed your springtails and isopods. With this set up, order mealworms in bulk, add a large handful to enclosure. The rats will go nuts eating them and whatever they do not catch will eat rat waste. This is a good subtrate for rats and will eventually be 100% recycled material, no longer having to buy bedding. Seeds can be harvested yourself as well. You may occasionally need to replace the decomposed wood but it takes a very long time and only $4 for like 4 cu ft.

Hey, I'm glad I found your channel, nice rats! I also raise Asf's (since July 2018) and I find the Aspen bedding from kaytee works well. The way it's cut makes it feel softer. I get it at a local store in Pleasant Valley NY in a 4 cubic foot bag. I can only assume it's cut the same for all size bags. Also in reference to pink feet issues, I've heard that pine is somewhat toxic to all or most rodents so I have changed strictly to aspen and don't experience this. The thin fur on the babies might not be the substrate. I have experienced this numerous times with the same mothers. The babies appear pink because the fur is so thin but then it fills in and they appear normal. I separated and bread these together and they developed a strange morph. Thin only on top like a stripe from head to tail and then grew into two different types of fur. Short brown fur where it was thin, and longer, thicker fur on the sides in grey. I'm not on UA-cam yet. Hope this helps. I love that you brought this topic up for people to learn about!

Thank you for all the excellent info on these cuties. After watching your videos, I found a pet shop near me that sells them. I got 5 young ones for pets. They are so cute and fun to watch. Only one bit me when moving it into their habitat. I think it will not be too hard to semi tame them as they seem food motivated and curious. Really enjoying them so far. I have a feeling they will make into the pet trade eventually as more people discover them.

I have had three ASF (two female and one male) for months now. I think they are 5+ months old. One female looks big! But no babies. It has been weeks and weeks that I check the cage two times a day and still no babies. Is there anything I am missing here? Feeding them a ton. They have a little hide in their cage. Two females and not sure why I am not getting babies.

It looks like some of the smaller rats that have hair loss could be due to barbering. Usually it's the bigger guys that barber the little ones, that's why the bigger guys have more hair. This is what I've seen anyway.

I had ONE issue with a larger bag that I bought from a Bulk Barn, but all the smaller ones I've gotten from Walmart have been awesome. Most beddings make me sneezy too, but Boxo doesn't. Natural paper bedding is the best bedding for rats and a little bit goes a long way and it keeps the odor down that's why I use I have eight rats in my room and I have no odor two of them I adopted from the Humane Society and the other six I bought from a reptile place that sells them as feeder rats mine are Dumbo eared rats and fancy rats but they're pets and no I don't breed them they're my babies

your rats looks good and sorry that i don't have time to read all the comments but i got so fed up of my rats getting eye infections and i've been breeding rats for a long 29years. The best thing i found looks a lot like your pine pellets that you first put in the tub but here i get hard wood pellets. It's cheap at 5 to 6 dollars per 40lb bags. It's the same thing they use to heat homes in pellet stove. I've tried different brand and they all do good, no problem and no smell and in my pet store people don't smell my rodents like they do in other per stores. So yea if you can try the hard wood pellet maybe you'll get better luck. Even my hairless mice, rats and even skinny pigs all so well on the pellets. Good luck

Some inexperienced mother AFS or other rodent's for that matter sometimes abandon the runts or even entire litters at times... If you have an experienced mother rodent she may or may not decide too take care of the babies! Worst case scenario she becomes overwhelmed and or eats or abandons it! That being said I've had experienced mother Hamsters or AFS mothers take care of runts before! Keep those mothers alive and well as their valuable!!!

Paper bedding. Not shredded paper. There's a difference. paper bedding absorbs more moister and odor than wood shavings. Also wood shavings isn't good for small rodents due to the dust and some woods are toxic to them

U can try some paper pellets instead of wood, something like yesterdays news cat litter. I personally dont like the paper pellets as cat litter cuz it cant be sifted out like the wood pellets (i use wood pellets as cat litter), but they might work for u for the ASFs.
Rn i breed all albino fancy rats for my snakes and cats (my cats eat whole prey), but ive been having problems with the babies not getting big enough fast enough, and my females haven't been having big enough litters or dont produce enough milk. I feed them cat or dog kibble cuz its cheap but they also get table scraps, so i dont think diet is the issue. I also can never keep more than 1 female with babies at a time cuz they fight over the babies and end up killing them. Ive been breeding rats for 6+yrs and ive always had this problem. Looking into breeding ASFs instead but was wondering how long it takes them to get full grown size to feed off (i have a male ball python and the full sizes ASF would be perfect size for him), how bad do they stink, and how well do they breed?

    • @MYANIMALHOUSE
      @MYANIMALHOUSE  4 роки тому +2

They have lil to no smell ...But they do take longer to get to full size ...But with ASF RATS you can't just separate a female it doesn't work that way like other RATS once you have a colony going you have to leave them together..and ASF RATS are amazing for any size ball python ....And I would feed your RATS F6 rodent diet ...Diet is big in breeding RATS And try giving the moms some milk biscuits they are great for lactating moms

    Let me ask you this.
    I started breeding ASFs,
I have a 1.4 ratio in a 20 gallon long aquarium. 3 females have dropped and 1 is close. I have about 25 babies ranging from 3 weeks to new born.
What is the best way to separate the babies from the moms.
I was thinking about 3 more containers.
One for males, one for females and one to start another breeding group.
Is there an issue if I move new weaned into the Male and female tubs if I keep them separated by sex?.
