Reporter: [Rambles about some symbolic and/or metaphorical meaning in the game] Suda: It's game about a degenerate news reporter. I wasn't thinking about that. Art's delicious.
I've got two favorite facts about this game. One, it takes place in Chicago (Illinois), and gets its name from the nearby Lake Michigan. And two, Suda51 had no idea there was an English dub of this game until someone asked him about it in an interview and showed him a copy. Game Informer did a great full playthrough (Super Replay) of this game, and also did a fun interview with Suda as the final episode of a full run of Killer7. Highly recommend both.
Wait... a guy with a greenish jacket and a monotone voice is telling that he needs to go alone now because his special someone with a 4-letter name is alone and waiting for him (in their special place) and remains unfazed by the fact that she might be dead already and he's like "I really don't care"?
New sub here. Your scripts are fucking brilliant, you sure know how to convey information while maintaining a sense of humour that's straight up my alley. Keep on, man!
Joel from Vinesauce played this game a few years ago for October and it is by far the funniest thing I’ve seen and the game stuck with me not only because of him and his commentary but the sheer insanity of it.
I remember X-Play (old G4TV era) actually talked about this game and was so fascinated by how absolutely bizarre it was as I couldn't make heads or tales on what the hell those monsters were, I think Morgan Webb just called the "crotch monsters" but now they mostly look like "The Thing" derivatives only bright read and sticky. This was another one of those concepts which honestly could have worked better in VR, another one of those failed experimental 6th gen games form Japan, the one where you just shout commands to a girl in a space station to help her survive some kind of alien/zombie attack IDK, and X-Play having fun with how the voice recognition doesn't pick up what you're speaking through the mic very well?
@@Mortuary_Gaming Thank you, Lifeline that's what it was called. Miss those days, sure the experiments didn't always work out, but at least there were no live services beyond MMOs.

Definitely feel James being boring and unlikeable but if they were trying to portray James as someone with schizophrenia that had recently had a psychotic break through his detached personality, monotone speech patterns and behavior, along with his delusions they hit the nail on the head.

Report from Hell is _the_ quintessential so bad its good video game alongside Omikron The Nomad Soul. Those two are The Room/Fateful Findings of gaming. Deadly Premonition would be Samurai Cop. lol
Never even heard of this one but this is wild. It brings to mind a few different games both older and newer, and I wonder if it had any contribution or subtle influence it drew from, or gave to. Manhunt, Night Trap, Outlast, and Suppermassive horror games such as Until Dawn all came to mind. There are definitely some cool mechanics they were toying around with here, that in the right hands could really pull off something unquestionably good. That battery life progress meter is damn brilliant, and the play style actually impacting outcomes is bit ahead of its time i think.
Totally wish this game was on modern consoles, because it looks so fun. And not only do I really like Jean-Philippe Bristol acting like a madman (Greg Irwin is amazing and loved learning his background, sweet man), but for a womanizer, seeing him…like that…he definitely looked nice…😏…🤣 Since your playing all of PS2’s survival horror games, I’d love to recommend one of my favorites from that Era ObScure (and including Aftermath). Definitely cut from the same cloth as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, it takes place in a high school (a rarity of not only horror games, but games in general, in my opinion) called Leafmore High. It’s a co-op game with fixed camera angles (while is actually done well) and the controls for the most part are good (minus the way they do the inventory, especially with a controller), and they have a good cast of characters, even if a little lacking in character. The sequel definitely has some better aspects (as in all the characters are used well enough and the inventory is way better), but has downsides, mostly having more sleazy dialogue, the story being quite offensive in places (it came out in 2007, which definitely isn’t a surprise), and not only does it seem like some of the story has been forgotten (the reference one of the characters as a younger brother to his sister, when in the original game it was stated she was his younger sister), but the in game cutscenes have horrible models (thankfully the in game characters look great). I also wanted to point out (mostly in the first game) that the puzzles are actually quite reasonable and aren’t Silent Hill insanely hard and the characters are really well dressed for a video game (there fashion really mirror real life fashion of the time, though there are up skirt shots…). Not the best games out there, but seeing how it’s gotten more respect in modern times, I definitely think the ObScure series is getting is praise like it should (especially with the Steam ports of both being well done). And I wish Capcom could remake it, because I think the RE engine is the perfect engine to recreate the original game at least in (even keeping its time period). I actually have a full playlist of reviews/retrospectives of the games and a couple let’s plays as well. And I also have insight on the original non-Steam game. So there is a part of the game where you go into the library a second time later in the game (you go there early on before, but backtrack there later on) and after a teacher takes your map, your locked in. You head upstairs and in the Steam version, you just start fighting creatures and are able to access each room and use bolt cutters to open a lock door on the second floor of the school. Now I’m my version, I have the original x-box version, when you go upstairs, there is a 3/4 second cutscene from the monster’s view seeing you coming in the hallway and not only that, one door is locked and there is no key to get in. Instead (which in the Steam version, it’s unlocked) you go into an unlocked room and push away a shelf to reveal a door or hole (I can’t recall) in the wall to gain access to the room. I also wanted to point out if you watch the in game title screen video (it’s also basically the trailer for the game), all the cutscenes in it aren’t in the game, which makes me think the story changed partway though (or had cut content) and they kept the cutscenes in to not show the story of the game. I also recommend TotallyPointlessTV’s ObScure video (which only covers the first game), because it points out some other things most people don’t notice. Definitely hope you cover ObScure and it’s squeal, because they are fun if flawed games. Edited: Spike is now Spikechunsoft…who has brought us Danganronpa and Zero Escape…the connections are connecting….no wonder it’s so….sexual…😏
I unironically find Michigan: Report From Hell to be a absurdly dumb, yet funny game to play, especially if you invite friends and have a few drinks. You just can't make some of this shit up, the voice acting literally gets worse the further you get in the game, in fact, it gets so bad that I sometimes wonder if the voice actors were deliberately told to improv as bad as possible. By the way, if you want some more obscure PS2 titles, look no further than Lifeline, Gregory's horror show, and Baroque.
