I saw the title and immediately knew Drakan was going to be here. I played this as a kid, then years later replayed it again and it held up so incredibly well. It's also the only fantasy rpg type game i know that does not respawn enemies. On one hand that's unfortunate because i love stuff like rare weapon drops and grinding, but also it means every optional area is alluring, you can get just a little more exp and money, which are essentially limited resources. It also is very non-linear, so replays can also be exciting since much like dark souls, you can access some optional mid/end game areas early if you know where to look and don't die. Also yiu can save wherever you want, the save system is functionally a slow save state, it's an insane game in so many ways
DUDE! THANK YOU! For years ive been searching for the name of Maximo. I rented it from block buster for a weekend and all Icould remember is being 6 years old; scared shitless of the first area, dying so much the dude was stripped to his underwear. You've ended my decade long search and have earned my sub. Thank you.
Maximo's similar to Dark souls in the fact that it's actually part of a different game series entirely, a game that probably had a hand in inspiring the Soulsborne series in general. Ghosts n Goblins
From Software its Old Company its present can be found since PS1 and PS2 they Make Kings Field 4: The Ancient this guy list any other game and Japan only game and Forgot KF4 that Released World Wide
Finally!!!!!! Someone who loves Drakan as much as I do, only difference is I played it when it first released. I loved this game so much that I named my only daughter after the main character, Rynn! She wasn't born till 5 years after I played the game but thats how much of an impact the game made on me. Great video, gave a thumbs up and subbed.
Yoooo. I was a professional game reviewer the entire PS2 gen and I never played Drakan! I do love Tenchu, Suffering, and Blood Will Tell, though. And of course Souls.
@@hesiolite That's not too surprising - Fromsofts mantra seems to be 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. I think this is the first time they did it from a third person perspective though that would be recognizable as 'soulslike' today.
Cool list man. I missed most of these because when the ps2 was popular. i was 14 and obsessed with tony hawk i got into souls games a few years back so i appreciate this list dude. Oh and eff the haters in your comments they probably just need a happy meal😂 great video
While I definitely think all of these games deserve the spotlight more, in some ways I don't think Monster Hunter should be just an honorable mention considering its a direct precursor, with Fromsoft using it as a gold standard of a good combat system that they wanted to replicate the merits of.
I have to suggest you to play shinubidu. Has the ancient Japan vibes (because you're an eastern mercenary, AKA ninja) where you have to backstab f√¢king bears!!! Has fast, hard, nimble combats wich every dark souls dexterity players could wish for and quite a good story.
To me none of the elements you listed at the beginning encapsulates what makes a game a soulslike. None of those are unique to souls games or soulslikes. To me the only really unique things to the souls and soulslike games are the control scheme (how its implemented and the animations are calibrated), this particular version of the stamina system, and the weight of movements and connecting hits. I can't think of anything else that makes me think of a game as a soulslike. The things you're focusing on are just generic videogame elements that can be found in all kinds of games.
I said 😮 when I saw Maximo. It's the first game I can remember playing and literally my favorite game of all time. It shines with the unique worlds and enemy rosters that come after each boss. I like Army of Zin too but it's more Devil May Cry than Dark Souls.
I've been thinking of doing a series of videos on old games that have a similar...Intangible something that might appeal to fans for some feature that's similar. I'm not saying Ecco the Dolphin or Hexen are Soulslikes...but there might be a similar appeal.
FromSoft its Old Game Developer before Dark Souls and Demon Souls its All Started as Kings Field PS1 and PS2, kings Field its a Reason I love So Much Dark Souls 2 because it has many kings Field Mechanic in there and Shadow Tower, DS2 its Bad from DS1 and DS3, But its Kings Field 5 : The Second Dark Soul, Same Director that Work with Kings Field
What a joke. This guy's definition of a Souls like is it has sword combat, and there are demons. That's literally every medieval action game on the PS2.
oh i’m really aware of Ico, it’s a masterpiece but it doesn’t make me feel like i’m playing a game reminiscent of souls games, even though it is in spirit. Although it inspired Miyazaki to change paths and became a game dev, you’d have to know that to draw a parallel off feel alone, and the point of the video wasn’t a history lesson, but like, “here’s some vibes that feel kinda like souls.”
oh i love DS2, did i shit on DS2? I used the clip from the burned ivory king to illustrate “plunging into the depths” or whatever but i love DS2 lol warts and all.
What a boring video. So u watched all the popular souls like takes on UA-cam and said yea the algorithm will lead those same viewers to my video and I'll just rehash the same ideas they do. And another crabs is about as much as a souls like as zelda. It's a decent game minus the dumb environmentalism crap but not a souls like. And lords of the fallen 2023 feeds crab game its own ass
Soulslike: A game that follows the genre of dark souls; such as challenging gameplay, puzzles, lack of direction or hints. Soulsborne: Anything made by the daddy of Dark Souls; all fromsoft games.
Drakengard fans (me) are livid that it wasn't included in this video
More like Darken gay lol
It's more akin to Dynasty Warriors iirc
Me I like drakengard
Definitely the second worst game ever person should play.
Drag on Dragoon is most definitely a hack and slash Warriors like.

A PS2 game that really feels like a “Souls-like” and was very challenging to beat was Star Wars Bounty Hunter. It’s basically Jango Souls lol.
Primal also seems to be a game resembling Soulslike, with elements of Dark Souls and Soul Reaver.

That's true, the GnG series was definitely one of the inspirations. As it was Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Iirc the developers said it takes place in the same universe.
They just need to bring back Maximo.
souls is a dungeon crawler genre, where the souls like confusion comes from is many people mistake it for an action game.
From Software its Old Company its present can be found since PS1 and PS2 they Make Kings Field 4: The Ancient this guy list any other game and Japan only game and Forgot KF4 that Released World Wide

400 BABIES! I hadn't thought of Powerthirst in years lol
Eternal Ring is the only nr1 PS2 SOULS LIKE.
I've played Drakan Order Of The Flame on PC many eons ago, but never heard of Drakan The Ancient's Gate, this is gold! PCSX2 time!
Dude I have no idea how I got Dragan order of the flame but I was the only person I knew with it
I played Drakan the Ancients Gates to death growing up and I never met another person who had heard of it
Yoooo. I was a professional game reviewer the entire PS2 gen and I never played Drakan! I do love Tenchu, Suffering, and Blood Will Tell, though. And of course Souls.
I actually bought drakan half a year ago at a thrift store bc the cover art was cool. now im excited to play it.
this videos a sleeper hit, needs more views
That's really sweet of you to say! I'm still a really new channel so I'm blessed ya'll are here at all :)
You get a sub for that Powerthirst clip alone *chefs kiss*
How is Evergrace just an honourable mention? It's literally FromSofts first attempt at the genre.
>king's field
@@hesiolite That was first person though, and didn't have the same kind of level design or story beats.
@@Christian-rn1ur honnestly having played them kf2 and 4 come close level design wise as well as story wise

never heard of drakan either and it looks awesome for the time . might actually get a copy myself .

How is legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 isnt on here ?
Was that a Powerthirst reference? Holy crap

Onimusha would be a much better comparison than Blood will Tell
That first game looked badass tbh.
Hilarious editing btw. Literally made me laugh out loud.
I’ll subscribe
u didnt try phantasy star universe ambition of the illuminous. huge worlds and huge bosses

He said, "A largeness you can feel!"
Hehehe
I grew up with Drakan, both the games were amazing
This was a dope watch and I don't even like Dark Souls.

The Lords Of The Fallen remake was genuinely a great game, there's no reason to hate on it lol
I still like even the first game, with all its flash.
Omfg I got played dororo on a nodded Ps2 and because of the nod chip the whole game was in black and white lmao
