Cytotoxin - Antigenesis (Cover)

- Here's the other song the guys of Cytotoxin sent me called "Antigenesis". This one was a real pain in the a. Don't get me wrong, it's a great song but this is the kind that I dislike practicing these days because I feel like I could seriously damage my hands or brain playing/practicing it (not kidding). Their guitar player got that "Focal Dystonia" that Christian Münzner also got, and since I noticed I get some problems if I overpractice I'm a bit more careful what and how I play these days.
I noticed it the first time when I practiced a bit too much Origin a few years back. (Hands cramping/hurting in a not good way/muscle memory and concentration problems). The neck profile of that Ibanez is also not really helping with it. It's a bit uncomfortable for that kind of music.
But yeah, since I'm a fan of a good challenge I still decided to record it. It's a bit more sloppy than my usual stuff but it's not an easy song and it's still in the realm of "good enough" hehe.
By the way, a question to my viewers: What camera angle do you prefer? This one, that's a bit higher and closer or the one from my latest videos?
Nevertheless, enjoy this video ;-)
I admire your humble and honest approach. Not only are you an amazing musician, but you're also very honest and personable. About how many hours a day do you practice? What's a good method of yours that keeps you inspired?
Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm just your regular guy playing the guitar that still has a day job/apprenticeship, so there's no reason to get hung up on ego haha. Most people don't even know about my playing.
To your questions: I don't really practice anymore. I do work on the songs that I'm recording but that's not really practicing. Just playing along until it's clean enough for a video. In the first 10 years of my guitar playing journey I practiced at least 5 hours up to 10 hours a day. What's keeping me inspired? Funny thing, I stopped playing almost completely for the last 3 years, so there was no inspiration. My motivation for practicing was actually to get really good at something (hello ego) , it was not necessarily because of the music. Sometimes I think I'm not really suited to be a musician and that my creativity could be spend somewhere else.
But I took a step back the last years and now I'm in again for the right reasons: writing/making music. That's why I don't practice anymore. I want to write more and that's what I do now and the only reason you should be practicing is to be able to play the music you want to write. Nothing more. The goal is music, not how fast one can play (even if my videos go in that direction haha)
this camera angle is where it's at 👌
Yes, its more exciting to have different camera angles
Can’t believe you learned this so quick. Insane!!!
I learned them at the same time and just focused on Chaos Cascade first. I planned more cover songs than I originally wanted so I got a few more songs that I already learned, but just need to record :)
I like this angle because I can clearly see whats going on with both hands and can slow it down and learn it as well.
Ok noted and thanks for your feedback. The next videos will be recorded at this angle ;-)
Awsome! I love Cytotoxin!
YESSSSS!!!!!!
you nailed this cover man. Awesome work. Subbed with much respect.
Amazing cover man!
I learnt my first tech death solo which is Fermented Offal Discharge, all that's left is getting it clean, but that's the hardest part. I really want to start learning more tech death songs and I watch your videos and get inspired. None of my friends or anyone I know personally gives a rats ass about death metal in general, forget tech death, so basically motivation is hard to find. I've to learn it all myself and admire it myself, but that's more than enough. The joy in learning complex songs and mastering it is a fun of its own and people like you keep me inspired. Thanks again for that.
Anyway, about this focal dystonia you're talking about, is it too risky to practice a whole lot on these complex songs? And also it would be a good band name tbh xD
I like this camera angle better btw, it could help me in learning a few notes or focusing on your technique if the video is slowed down.
Jaw dropping man.
Great cover!!!! Is Ionosphere from the Radiophobia album on deck yet?? It also rules!!!!!
My idol nailed it again
Oh my god, I'm someones idol....how's that? :D
@@KevinHeiderich yes, my friend told me that u covered some defeated sanity and they want me to add u as my influence. So i did. Keep shredding my idol, im always looking forward on your videos.
So good.

Love this album... I've failed at getting Radiatus Generis up to speed.
For stuff of this speed/difficulty do you spend more time playing along to the full song or just metronome to make sure it's still clean? I feel like sometimes playing along to the full mix I lose cleanliness...but hey I'm just a guy having fun in my bedroom. How about speed? Do you slow it way down to get it really clean first or just go for it at higher tempos?
Maan I do the same! Haha, I mostly practice on metronome to be as clean as this guy, gus Drax and many other amazingly clean players. Personally I think that if we keep increasing our cleanliness in higher speeds, evantually, the songs will become easier for us and we will be able to put more feel in our playing. Buut that's just my opinion hehe..
no shit...i'm still struggling with fallout progeny. even their easier songs are really hard :/
to be fair radiatus generis is a pretty tough one too, good luck with it dude!
I just play along to the song. Section by section until each one is clean enough for a full playthrough and then I play the full song until it's good enough. If I notice any issues while playing I go back to the section that needs cleaning up. Normally I can just learn a riff and play it at full speed with some sloppiness. If that's not possible, then I just slow the song/riff down 10-20% and practice it until I'm at full speed. I actually had to do it that way with the intro of this song. It's just a fingerbreaker, that lick, so I had to work on it.
Btw, most of the time, when I'm working on a riff I'm just playing it without a click or the song until I feel comfortable enough and just then I'll play along to the song. But the method of slowing it down and then gradually adding speed to it is great for improving. Even though I barely do it I can also recommend playing to a click. I only do it when practicing/recording my own stuff. Also recording yourself helps a lot. You can hear if it's good enough and you can even see how good your timing is. Recording myself improved my playing the most the last years, since I barely practice anymore.
I gotta say Kevin, you're my favorite guitar player as of right now. I put you in the same category as Kris Norris and Ryan Knight. Simply amazing
Stop it, I'm blushing :D
I think I now have to grant you a wish or something....do you have any song you want me to cover? (Please don't say Archspire, I get way too many requests for them)
Btw, I'm currently working on various songs with various drummers, so next year it's gonna be time for some Kevin Heiderich Originals ;)
Kevin thanks for the awesome response! I would love to suggest you a song or 2 ;)
Definitely Overthrown by Arsis orrrrr idk I will Return by Black Dahlia Murder. Those would be sick to hear ^_^
You're awesome man. Cant wait to see what else you post in the future! The Obscura and Alkaloid stuff is great. Man, maybe you should try Gula or Le Sermont de Tsion by First fragment. Hopefully you choose one of my suggestions n_n (>.
@@jessebowles5632 Hehe, 2 Ryan Knight songs. Back then when his style of tapping, and the Christian Münzner style tapping, was completely new to me I learned the intro of Overthrown. Maybe I should revisit it.....from the Deflorate album I'd rather do Black Valor or Necropolis. I transcribed the first half of Black Valor a few years ago, but I'll look into I Will Return as well ;-)
@@KevinHeiderich Ryan Knight is an all time favorite for sure! I would enjoy any new video you post anyways. Thanks for the response :) Always looking forward to your new videos man
@@jessebowles5632 I'm transcribing overthrown right now. Video should be done by tomorrow ;-)
Radiatus generis please!! Btw, are you playing live for them or why do they send u the song? And yes, this camera angle is pretty good. We can see perfectly your right and left hand techniques, which are clean AF. You really must be one of the cleanest guitarists on youtube, that plays this level of music this clean. Props man.
Sorry, I'm done with Cytotoxin songs for now. They sent me those 2 to cover and that's it. I also have to get that Blotted Science video done hehe. And thanks man
Are you using a 7string guitar?
I love how upfront about the possibility of injury you are. A lot of people believe guitarists can simply enter a zen-state and play highly technical works effortlessly with zero physical strain. Spoiler alert: they can't. Very technical metal is obviously physically demanding and humans need to warm-up, take-breaks, and troubleshoot appropriately to take care of their hands.
Also, it should go without saying you're an absolute animal at guitar.
Great playing man what ibanez are you using?
That was an Ibanez RGIX7FDLB. I think it was only sold for like a year. Could only get it at Musicstore Köln and nowhere else. I don't have it anymore though
Auf der "Of What's To Come" von Deeds Of Flesh findest du bestimmt auch ein paar "cover-würdige" Songs.
Kamera is gut so 👍
Hehe, Reduced To Ashes vom gleichnamigen Album ist auf meiner Liste von Songs, die ich mal aufnehmen könnte, eben weils was schönes für die Schlaghand ist haha.
Ok, dann Kamera immer so ;-)
@@KevinHeiderich Of What's To Come ist das vorletzte Album und seeehr viel technischer als Reduced to Ashes. Sicher eher was für dein spielerisches Niveau 😁 Spielst du eigentlich auch Bass? Den spielt auf dem Album nämlich der Ex-Bassist von Spawn of Possession. Richtig geil! 👍
Hell yeah man sick playing!
What band are you in? Been wanting to know that and check out your original work.
Are the tabs available anywhere? Can't seem to find them on ultimate-guitar
Jason, their guitar player sent them to me. He might send you tabs if you ask him
@@KevinHeiderich Sure thing, thank you!! Where did you contact Jason?
Any original stuff of yours I can listen?
What ibanez model is this. So beautiful.
One of the newer Iron Labels called "RGIX7FDLB"
I always have so much string noise when I'm sweeping and tapping, I can't hear any when you do it. I'd love to know how you're muting the strings.
Use metronome and build speed. His sweep is not 100% perfect and he is using a string muter (fretwrap) which i consider gay.
EADPE that fret wrap is above the nut. He’s not using it to mute his sweeps.
@@EADPE I know how to practice sweeping and my speed is fine, I've just got a bit of extra string noise that I'm not sure how to mute. I know some guys use their thumb but I find that uncomfortable as my thumb isn't against the strings normally. Also that fretwrap is for muting the noise behind the nut, it can come in during recording and the overtones sound quite shit once you notice them.
I find them "gay" too, but this one is for resonant headstock noise. Never had a guitar with this much resonances from the headstock. If I play a B and immediately stop the note then it will still ring from the headstock. This wrap helps. I will probably put some foam or something under the strings behind the nut.
@@KevinHeiderich then your guitar needs to be recalibrated or the bridge action is not on point. When you did your necrophagist cover, it was clean.
when can we expect some original material?
I wouldn't count on anything finished or properly recorded music anytime soon. Maybe some riffs/licks and demos, though youtube is not really the platform for short clips (in my opinion). I do have some jam tracks that I usually write while jamming to toontrack midi pack drum beats. Those are songs I could record while working on more serious stuff :)
(Sorry, I really take my time with original music haha)
what model Ibanez is that?
RGIX7FDLB
@@KevinHeiderich Have you tried the RGD2127Z? it is the 7 string that Chris uses

your hands are extremely important, and you know this
they are the "tool of tools"
as in, a "tool" is a device that _you use_ to solve a problem. A screwdriver is a tool. A plectrum is a tool.
Your _hands_ are the tools _you use_ to _operate_ the above tools.
Anyway. If you feel your hands are too stressed, you either change your technique or stop playing. There is no other choice, if you want to remain able to play.
