Please react to more Prime Mariah. her voice is so interesting to analyse, she said she has nodules since she was a child and that was primarly the reason she could hit whistles. React to "Vanishing" SNL Rehearsal, considered one of her masterpieces she wrote the song when she was 18 even before having a record deal. Part of why she was always vocally misunderstood for some vocal coaches is because her underrated b-side stuff is MUCH greater vocally than most of her single.

    • @hazelangus
      @hazelangus 5 років тому +6

I agree with this. Unfortunately, what is good for the singer is not always good for the record label. A lot of singers' released singles are definitely not their best work. The label isn't so much into releasing the best music, they want what will sell best, chart well and make them lots of money. Of course, it still has to do well enough that people keep listening to the singer in order to make more money down the road. I imagine that's a pretty difficult tightrope to walk.

I have a LOT of thoughts today so please bear with me as I gather them...
This is easily one of my favorite videos you've ever posted, Sam, and it is FILLED with so much useful information. You and Steve are both so articulate, kind, passionate, and knowledgeable about your craft, it is delightful seeing you share your expertise with one another and with us. Thank you both for that.
As far as the actual analysis is concerned, during the course of this 30m video, things that have confused me for decades suddenly began making sense because the combination of your explanations with examples of what you were talking about helped me understand my own voice better!
For example, I grew up knowing what chest and head voice are, how they feel, what anatomical structures to use to produce each of them, etc. In my teens, I taught myself to transition from chest to head without an audible flip because it sounded like a poor habit to me if used out of necessity instead of deliberation. Later on in my 20s, when I'd gotten comfortable doing this and didn't have to think about it, I started using it as a stylistic choice when singing professionally (well, professionally-ish). And yet, I had no idea until this video that what I've been doing this whole time is mixing. I thought mixed voice was something I never learned how to produce but it turns out I've been doing it for 20+ years! 😀
I was also nodding in agreement with the idea that using descriptive terms for the physical sensations felt when we are singing well can hinder a singer's progress more often than it helps us. In my own past, the best way to understand the physical feelings required to produce a particular sound is to use a mental visualization as a psychological device. It helps me to arrange the anatomical details if I can sort of trick myself by envisioning a non-musical action.
When I was very young, a music teacher trained me to sing while holding a variety of strange and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Laying on the floor, standing on one foot, seated but leaning far back. The point of these was to trick the mind into engaging all the body parts necessary for singing without having to think about it because your brain is focusing on something else, the weird pose that you are holding. Another great one was a voice coach who taught me that if you feel yourself struggling to reach a note, you can tune instantly by picturing your voice sailing up and over the note and landing on it from above rather than trying to get to it from below. It worked the first time I tried it and has never failed since.
And that kind of goes back to the last point about not being so mired in terminology because the important thing is how it feels when your tonal quality is good. It feels COMFORTABLE based on your individual body as a person. And when singing is comfortable, less effort and energy need to be expended, which in turn makes a more consistent, more agile, and overall healthier voice. These things are just so difficult to explain with words though.
I absolutely loved this video. Thank you so much, Sam and Steve! ❤🎶😍
PS - my last voice coach was also named Steve!
PPS - I had a kitchen that had a white, orange, and hot pink color scheme 💟🧡💟
    Arrrright I'm done 🤣

You guys accurately vocalized all of the frustrations I have watching vocal coach responds to videos! I love the shit out of them, don’t get me wrong, but I have all of those same (if waaay less articulated and educated) thoughts, because I feel like these terms can and do mean anything at any given moment! Not only do they change between the youtubers, they change in the same person as well it seems like, so as a beginner it’s SO hard to get a true handle on what you guys mean!
Sam, I think you’re the person to get this shit sorted 😎 you’re thorough and analytical, and I can ABSOLUTELY see you developing a universal vocabulary for singing that like, you know, universally makes sense 🙃and then promoting the shit out of it and teaching it to people.
Dooooo iiiiiit. You can’t teach people nearly as effectively if you don’t have a clear vocabulary with which to impart your wisdom.

Imo all voice teachers use those terms in a very similar way, unless layman channels. The video they react to hear is a layman channel (Fedsax) that relies on the content of other layman channels run by another layman (Matheus Diaz), and their idea of such things as "support" and "resonance" don't make any semse ans are simply wrong and not compatible with the dogmas of vocal pedagogy

It's so nice to see professionals look into these kinds of videos because a lot of them are very misleading and are mostly created by people who give their own definitions based on their own bias. Not saying this video is one of them, but over the years I've seen clips like this made by know-it-alls whose knowledge about vocals are only just as much as any layman. It's really great to watch professionals like yourselves give your opinions about this. Merry Christmas!

Yes! Sam’s positive view point is a major reason I watch all his videos. I cannot sing a note without setting all the neighborhood dogs to howling but I do appreciate those that can!

This is great! Thank you from a bona fide poor, who cannot currently afford voice lessons but wants to learn as much as possible.
There are so many singers to whom I'd love to hear you react. Julie Andrews, Idina Menzel, Ana Carolina, just a few artists who fascinate me, and I'd love to hear you deconstruct the reasons.

A very good video for me to watch just now... have been hearing a lot about how people "should" sing and "should" be trained, and I just get the feeling that nitpicking terminology isn't helpful OR esteem-boosting. It leaves me feeling like "I can't do x and therefore I suck", whereas normally I know I don't suck, but rather could use more training and practice to smooth out the rough edges. I also love the holistic sort of approach you both take with singing, where it's about "one voice" and how it feels, and also about what YOU want to do with your voice, rather than a blanket standard to be applied to x genre of singer.
Also, Steve, you're totally awesome!! (For real.)

You should make this an ongoing series at least once a few weeks. This conversational format between two artist/singers is unique and interesting.

I love your videos Sam! Very helpful and informative. Can you please, please, please do a specific analysis of any solo David Phelps performance of your choosing? They're all good! If you have done one previously, my apologies, I just can't seem to find one on your channel. Phelps. is. amazing.

This was amazing! I wish you could take a second to explain a few of those terms, but I know that can be tricky. I heard so many terms today that I wish I knew what they meant. But yeah, you two rock!

This gives me more insight into technical approaches to singing than a year taking lessons did. It makes me feel happy and sad at the same time because I wasted so much time but I also feel like I am finally understanding how I can treat my voice and myself better while singing

Love this video. One, that living room is fantastic. I don't know who decorated it, but kudos to whoever it was. Second, the way you both described head and chest voice was so relatable to me, a novice. I finally understand what the difference is between the two. Last, I also loved the way you guys described chest mix, heady mix, balanced mix, and masked place head voice. It was a tremendous help to hear the explanations of all these, so that I can understand what is being said by the video. Thank you so much for everything you do.

You should analyze Jose Feliciano’s 1968 National Anthem. He was a major trailblazer for the time period of performing the first personalized National Anthem. This was also during the height of the Vietnam war and he made the National Anthem sound like a balled rather than a fight song. He almost lost his career because of it.

Mitch from PTX/Superfruit just makes it look so easy to hit that note and he does that on pretty much every song. Beyonce, Whitney and Celine. What can you say, they just belt those out like its nothing.
