  • An-shu Stephen Kinryu-Jien Hayes, founder of To-Shin Do Kasumi-An Ninja Martial Arts has spent his entire adult life in the pursuit of perfection through the study of the Asian martial arts and spiritual traditions, living and traveling throughout North America, Japan, Europe, the Arctic, China, Tibet, Nepal, and India.
Stephen has been described as one of the five brightest stars in the martial arts; a legend, by Black Belt Magazine Yearbook 1998, one of the ten most influential living martial artists in the world, by Black Belt Magazine March 2006, and a legend in the martial arts, by Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee, father of Taekwondo in America. He has demonstrated self-protection combat skills to military and law-enforcement groups including the U.S. Air Force Academy, the FBI Academy, the American Society for Law Enforcement Training, and members of Britain's elite SAS. He has worked on special assignments with the United States Department of State Dignitary Security Services, and under contract with the United States Defense Intelligence Agency.
Dedicated to promoting the benefits of Life Mastery Through Martial Arts, he travels the world as teacher, seminar leader, and lecturer, inspiring others by translating his extensive background in martial arts and meditation into practical lessons for handling the pressures, uncertainties, and stresses of life. Many students, readers, and seminar participants have reported that his teachings have brought them deep encouragement and empowerment, and inspired them to achieve new levels of success in their personal and professional lives.
His presentation at TEDxBloomington started our conference day with a provocative explanation of what "ninja" really means, followed by a cautionary tale of what might happen when you read fiction in junior high study hall. His experiences as bodyguard for the Dalai Lama resonated strongly with the Bloomington audience.

About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBloomington, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBloomington event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Mr. Hayes is one of the highest caliber martial artists I have ever known, and indeed one of the highest caliber human beings I have ever known as well. As a master martial artist with the ability to transmit and teach esoteric and long-hidden combat and mind science methods to a Western audience, he is peerless. I have personally felt his martial techniques. Many times. Lets be very frank- you don't get into Blackbelt Magazine's Hall of Fame, then years later have the same authorities in the field name you "One of the 10 most influential living martial artists in the world" , and also become the security director for Nobel Peace Prize winner H.H. the Dalai Lama for many years by being incompetent, "bad" or unable to deliver. For example, In a Discovery Channel documentary on ninja a few years ago, Mr. Hayes defeated 2 highly trained, armed and very experienced L.A. PD officers protecting an individual. Stephen Hayes was able to circumvent their security, totally unarmed by merely "getting in their heads" and using the very methods he teaches. He single-handedly accomplished what others could only accomplish using a fully armed, 6 member authentic Navy SEAL team. His skill level and expertise speak for themselves.

Professor Ronald Duncan is a great man and I would certainly consider him legendary and have grown a lot as a result of my acquaintance with him. This video, however, isn't about Duncan. It's about another great and legendary man, who has done harm to none and helped so many. I would respectfully suggest that Duncan followers should take advantage of the lesson in this video and grow. We all need all the help we can get to achieve enlightenment. It's not all about killing, you know.

I used to read his books in the 1980"s. Him and his instructor. Masaaki Hatsumi. Ninja (or Shinobi) were simply Black Ops of feudal Japan. Highly skilled. But special forces of a feudal age just the same. This man has been studying with what is left of them for over forty years. One should not scoff at what he knows or "doesn't know." Illusion and deception are the trademarks of his craft. One should not quickly judge by shooting off an overactive mouth without first knowing the facts. This is a trademark of ignorance and juvenile maturity. And we have way too much of both in the USA.

  • @pz3j

That's pretty cold man. I'm sure Duncan wouldn't approve. Good is as good does. Love the Professor by all means. He is to be honored greatly! Hayes certainly deserves top respect. To denegrate him using Duncan's name is to dishonor the professor as well. You need to grow brother.

I was under the impression that the anger of the past was over and that the parties to the anger had grown beyond it and had learned to focus on themselves instead of on jealousy or petty envy. Shouldn't we accord respect to each in his measure? Focusing on growth and honor is much preferable to keeping the hate going, wouldn't you agree? So much suffering has come from thoughtless anger, juvenile selfishness and a general lack of compassion. Most advanced practitioners realize this.

"we're not here to educate people, we're here to entertain them" ... perfect, just brilliant, couldn't have said it better myself: this right here, that's MMA/BJJ/Grappling/Wrestling/MuayThai/Boxing/Combat Sports in a nutshell ... you can't educate willingly delusional people like Joe Rogan or Jocko Willink or Royce Gracie etc. ... all they see is what they want to see and what they want to see is money, fame, hype ... that's all they're after ... YOU EF SEE, BEE JAY JAY, EM EM MAY!!!

Albeit you would likely need proof, I can say just by my word that his schooling taught me self control, how to control a situation before it becomes violent, and obviously how to protect myself and others. I am just going to end this by saying I am pretty sure he has been in some form of fight before, albeit I can not say for certain. Take care man!
