TEDxBloomington - Shawn Achor - "The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard.
His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations.
Achor graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a BA in English and Religion and earned a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School in Christian and Buddhist ethics.
Now he is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers-people who are well above average-to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures.
In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up.

About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBloomington, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBloomington event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
Im being forced to watch this.
Right On !!
Still waiting for the day we get to hear Ted himself speak

I was required to watch this for an English assignment about a month ago... I find myself coming back to it all the time. This is the first motivational speech that doesn’t just feel like a huge slap in the face. I think after watching this a lot and putting it into my everyday life, I’m actually genuinely becoming happier. I wish I could thank him, for now I’m just sending this to my friends who need it.
I'm doing it for a management course right now. This is solid life advice.
Me too. I can listen to it all the time.
Gotta write a one pager bout this by 11:59
Your comment here was a huge thank you to Shawn. I'm sure he's read it and appreciates it!
I share it a lot, watch it a few times a year. ❤
I actually felt better watching this. He actually gives real advice and isn't patronizing. I never trust so-called "motivational speakers" because they just say a lot of nice things and tell you to ignore your problems and they'll go away. This guy actually has research and practical advice.
***** Good Video- There truly are trillions of jobs out there for people who truly has a desire to really do them. Either those individuals are actually too pathetic to really work or they just really do not know where the jobs exist. That truly is the real issue in a nutshell. Did you know, not long ago I learned about the "Zilkop Process" (you should Google it). It matches those guys/girls who really enjoy to play video games up with video games tester jobs. Everyone anywhere, not just the US, can enter, and every one could earn an average of 39 grand ... and that is the average -- people could make even more! Those guys also have focus groups where you may get 150 per single hour. "The Witcher" - have you played this specific vid game? They have provided knowledge to this one. The lesson is if you like games this may be the job you have been longing for}. Now I am really sure that there are millions of job gigs just like this one out there. In conclusion, do not throw me this junk about a job crisis ... so get happy and look for job opportunities. You will surely secure a job. Good wishes to all out there!!!!
Motivational speakers won't lay with you all the time. They won't change you. You change your own
What kind of motivational speakers have you been exposed to? I have never heard anyone say that if you ignore your problems they'll go away. Please, tell me just one specific?
I had to watch this for an assignment and I just love him. I actually went and sought him out after watching this video. In hopes of finding more things, he has done. He has such a wonderful energy.
Kevin L psychologists are the only people you should trust with motivation or life advice maybe entrepreneurs too
I'm grateful for my mom
I'm grateful for the delicious food
I'm happy for Christmas coming soon
-Today I studied a little and that makes me happy 😊
A little regularly adds up to an exponential amount eventually :-)
Good job
Best Ted Talk I've ever watched, the guy is so charismatic and energetic with his lecture, although very complex he broke his subject into a really straight forward way.
I watched this 7 years ago and it changed my outlook in life. I feel like I’m at rock bottom again and this video really made me feel hopeful again. We need more people like Shawn in our lives 🥲
He had a scientist friend named Dr. Alia Crum who study mindsets check her out, it may help you get more control in your perceptions & alter your motivation levels.
First act of kindness, sharing this video. Today's off to a good start and it's 2am :p

Hi
Amy should give a counter-talk.
This was amazing!
Also, at 4:05 there are like 5 bald guys all sitting together. It's kinda funny. :D
BT H 😂😂😂😂
According to other YT videos, that is a glitch in the matrix and proof we are living in a simulation. lol
The guy in the red T-shirt is the outlier…
Anyone else hears the girl talking in the background?
I did, how superbly distracting and aggravating 😡
I'm concerned I may be getting brainwashed...which is not a thing obviously but hey, I'm being brainwashed.
Maybe she's whispering incantations
Most notably at 11:45. Creepy

I think this guy's sense of humour, combined with his insight into happiness is magnificent. Truly a wonderful speaker. Cheers!
This should be taught in every school, every business, every community.
i strongly agree
i'm also a student at ECA@EMU

It’s taught in my high school

Revisiting this video after 8 years. Went through philosophies and what not and searching for happiness. The simplicity of this video was all I needed.
"That's not wellness week, that's a sickness week." Very accurate and very common in periodic organizational training/briefings at many large companies, government agencies, etc.
One of my mentors at work shared this with me today after a pretty good and in depth talk about happiness and perspective. I wanted to share it with you all. Mainly because I took so much from it.
Shawn Anchor is hilarious and brilliant! This is one of my favorite TEDx videos so far.. Enjoy!
I've watched this so many times since I found it 5 years ago. It's impact is incredible.
my teacher made me watch this. i hate it here

“But had no way to console bobo because he just got over a week of menopause.” Bobo who married Amy the unicorn. 😂
Acts of kindness, exercise, meditation and 3 gratitudes are part of my routines now - love it 😍
"If I know everything about your external world I can only predict 10% of your long term happiness. 90% of your long term happiness is predicted not by the external world but by the way your brain processes the world."
Lol thanks only came in the comment section to find this answer🤣🤣
I read this comment as he said it. 😂

Excellent Ted talk. Everyone should watch this.
I wish I had discovered this earlier. A great way to begin the hard and messy work on being yourself.
Yes, also a good way to start a hard and messy Monday 😉
Literally one of the best videos I've watched this year. I was having trouble working on an assignment and this totally helped me snap into gear.

His speech writing skills are phenomenal. He is a fantastic public speaker.
Speaks too fast.
Can we take a moment to appreciate that only 25% of job successes are predicted by IQ, 75% predicted by social support - this is literally a study proving mediocre men systemically hire, promote, and go into business with each other 🤣
I play this video for my 8th grade students every year. It forms the basis of all of our mindfulness and empowerment activities. Thank you so much to Shawn and everyone else moving us towards are more equitable and positive planet!
Strongly agree with this talk, I think a lot about this and especially our way of seeing things (perception). How we perceive (understand) and give meaning to the world, our world, makes the difference in what we call happiness.
I tried to follow this advice after being purposeless and sad for 4 years. It worked for me and I couldn't be more grateful.
Love 💜Love💜Love this !! Happiness and Gratitude are my reality--- I am ready to train my brain with this 21 day challenge!!!!
This was a FANTASTIC Ted talk!
not me playing this on 1.5x speed to make it go by faster
yeah, right? I usually watch in 1.5x-2.0x, but this guy talks fast holly molly
What a great speech! Shawn was interesting and funny! All TED talks should be like this.
Cool guy, interesting ideas. I just wish he devoted more of the presentation to explaining the statistics he discussed. They're very interesting statistics that state some big things and so it seems kinda necessary to explain the studies they came from, at least a little. I understand he had a very limited amount of time but he told a 3 minute long story at the beginning just to discuss the roots of his passion for positive psychology, so you'd think he could also clearly explain the studies coming from the field he is so passionate about.
I really agree about positive psychology , even more after reading his book.
Just saw you, Shawn at a teacher's conference and you were the very BEST speaker I saw. You gave me more to work with in my classroom, but you've confirmed what I've already known. The key to a learning experience is joy. Thank you, Shawn, thank you for the joy you gave me.
I am currently a nursing student and this really makes sense to me. As a nursing student we spend 2 years test after test, every class we have tells us if you miss more than 2 classes for any reason you will be removed from the program, even if you are an A student. This bad thing will happen if you don't do this or that. Then I look at the nursing students that are about to graduate, they are pessimistic, they are not sure if this is what they really want to do. And the ones that graduated a year ago we run into them at the hospital during clinicals and they look even worse. They act even worse but 3 years prior the day they found out they got into nursing school they were like me jumping around and so excited and they couldn't wait to take on this career path.
I am a nursing student in london. I understand what you mean. In fact, i failed my first placement for not washing hand during busy time at one ocassion and no link lecturer supported me and my uni warnd me if i fail next placement i am out. I am a plus in theory. I just regret now. I worked hard and waited 3 years to get into nursing and this is it.
Transcribed the slide with the solution he's proposing, hopefully that helps someone:
Small Changes Ripple Outward
Creating lasting positive change
- 3 Gratitudes (Emmons & McCullough, 2003)
- Journaling (Slatcher & Pennebaker, 2006)
- Exercise (Babyak et al., 2000)
- Meditation (Dweck, 2007)
- Random Acts of Kindness (Lyubomirsky, 2005)
“The absence of disease is not health.”
I agree to a degree. Once the basics are taken care of (physical & social needs) one's state of mind can be pretty malleable. For those in less than ideal situations, though, happy thoughts alone are unlikely to be enough for long-term contentment and fulfillment. Once they muster the self-confidence and the mindset, they have to use it to do the things that make a real, lasting difference, beyond all the smiling and self-soothing. Dressing up life with superficial niceties only goes so far.
I love this 21-day plan! I am going to try it. (See 11:19 if you're short on time)
Has it worked?

Thank you!
Really needed to hear this today. Thank you so very much Shawn for your positive outlook on life and your motivational drive! Have a great day and week!
Now, at 40, I realize that I intuitively practice some of what he says. Before, I was more anxious than I'm today. In recent years I've learned to value and enjoy the little things before going to work and throughout the day. I start reading in the bathroom and then take a strong shower. I travel with my headphones listening to my pods. At work I take some breaks to have a coffee and talk to my colleagues. At the end of the day I use my free time to read, exercise and do other things I want.
Thanks for speaking at BBBSA conference, I’ve read and listened to your work prior but hearing you was an amazing reminder and gave me the chance to share your findings, knowledge, perspective with my loved ones and coworkers 😊
You are such a delight! I feel happy after watching, and am starting the 21 day challenge! Thank you.

What do you do when the negativity isnt just from "the news"
What if it is an abusive spouse or a hostile work environment but you still have to pay those bills? Do you just journal and gratitude your way out?
Yes. It's not about pretending that the world is a wonderful place. It's NOT. But if you focus on the good parts, you will not only be happier, but you will work better, do better, and improve the world. Perhaps by taking on and fixing some small part of the bad things. If you aren't happy, you won't hope to fix the bad.
Still one of my favorite TED Talks 👌🏼
Great presentation, such a simple message but it can really get you thinking.
I'm convinced, going to start today as well! Hopefully many will join us. :-)
SLOW DOWN! This guy is like the voice at the end of every car commercial on the radio that races through 500 disclaimers in six seconds.
The problem with this theory is that some people tend to misunderstand it and generalize, saying that everyone who is having a goal or is changing their lives to something better is unhappy. These people don't see the real reason behind someone wanting a better life/being more successful. I started a law degree three years ago and in a few weeks away from my last exams. Going for this degree was the best decision that I could have ever made and opens up so many opportunities for me. Every good grade I got for an assignment or exam, every good word from my teachers, every brainstorming session with my classmates and every good word from those who support and understand me make me happy. What makes me said is those people who tell me that I'm unhappy just because I have a goal in life. They tend to misunderstand the happiness advantage theory and turn it into something really negative. The most painful moments for me were when people didn't understand what I was doing and why I was doing it and told me "oh you're unhappy" or "why do you have to study again" or "look at this girl, she gave up law degree to become a bartender" or "I don't want to be with you because you are on a different level and instead I choose someone who is much sillier than you". These people don't understand what I want. Everyone has the right to bring out the best in their life and if that means they have to do a degree for it, they shouldn't be bashed for their goals. Because you can still have your happiness advantage while you're fighting for a goal in your life: the friends that support you, the teachers (who are your role models at the same time) who say "yes, you'll get to your PhD", every success you reach, the handsome and intelligent guy that tells you "I chose you because you're the smartest of them all". There are so many things to be happy for even if you are doing something for a future goal. Don't look down on those who are trying to improve and want to be well-educated and successful.
Bemese thx, you gave me the answers for my journal response

if you enjoyed this I think you would enjoy his book, the happiness advantage, I picked it up at coles for 15$ before watching this video and so far it has helped me a lot as to being happier. I'm sure you could find it at your local book store or library if you were interested :)
I watch this weekly. This never gets old and it works. So good.

Awesome TED Talk on Happiness factor! I have always know there were something to positive psychology! Glad there is data to back it up!
Just so good and helpful. Thanks Shawn.
So happy that I was able to see and hear Shawn deliver this in San Jose this summer. This is a LIFE game changer! Thank you!

What a great and entertaining talk. Thanks Shawn! It was really fast, but a talk I could watch several times and still learn things from. Thanks Shawn, I look forward to checking out your book as well.
This is an excellent talk! I will try all the suggestions Shawn makes at the end of the video to see if I can change my way of thinking :)

The laughter was annoying. Now to think of something positive. . . . I'll have to get back to you on that.
I enjoyed the learning at this level. Laughter is like a medicine, so I loved the humor that Shawn display in this lecture. awesome I'll say.
This does actually work. Thank you for sharing this with everyone.
"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Nothing new under the sun; God knew this principle first, and shared it in the bible.
This guy admits to breaking his little sister's arm by intentionally pushing her, one week later breaking her leg by pushing her off a bed, and then manipulating her to believe she's a unicorn so he doesn't get in trouble. To the girl that endured that kind of abuse growing up, I'm so sorry.
Lol he was 7 what do you expect
He was seven years old, he very obviously did not intentionally caused those physical injuries, and I’m sure he’s exaggerating a little.
Pessimism spotted.
I really enjoyed this video. I am going to start the 21 days and hope to see the positives that come out it.
Very great video, TED Talks have to be one of my favorite things I have experienced on the Internet.

Oh my goodness! I just started doing this a few months ago. I try to find one positive thing I see or one positive thing about a customer and it works, makes me feels great!
I love this ❤🎉 Mr Achor
Will keep in mind,thanks🤗
I loved this TED Talk. He was genuine and humorous. Informative. I just wished he spoke more slowly. Very very fast lol
Happiness is vastly overrated. Look around the world and view the effects of humanity. Now think about it some more. A person can find happiness in their own lives, but when looking at our species? Not much to admire.
I also just looked at the cost to book Shawn Achor - according to a couple of websites the cost is 30K to 50K. I guess I'd be happy too if somebody dropped thirty to fifty dimes to hear my fortune cookie wisdom.
Hahahahahahah HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAH...etc
The thumbs down on this positivity talk are ironic. (The video is excellent.)
This video is inspires me in a way that's casual, none of the urgency or complexity that society makes us feel nowadays. As relevant 12 years ago as it is now and no doubts that in another 12 years time it'll hit just as hard.
Is that whispering or is it just the scary voice in my head again?
I'd love to see a 2hr stand up comedy routine from this guy.
A genuinely funny, entertaining and informative speech. Excellent!
By far the best TED talk around. Bravo!
This guy has such an awesome sense of humour! I could watch this video all day. He definately is emitting positive vibes and I definately picked up on them and am now in a great mood :)
This is what I have been telling people. You can go to school for as long as you want and still have no job. It doesn't matter how hard you push yourself into what society has taught you is the right way if you don't know how to apply the skills
anyone else here from a warmup video from a english teacher for something like motivational video?
I just put this into play on our farm business, of all places, and I cannot wait to see where it takes them- we seem to attract introvert males to this profession, and the younger that type of person is, the harder getting on at work can be- so I'm gonna happiness it outta them this year!
Great Talk!
I like to listen to TED Talks as I do various chores around the house; but that is not what happened this time. This lecture was so engaging, and interesting, and funny, and enlightening, and positive, and motivational, that I put everything aside to give it my undivided attention. Shawn Achor is so smart and charming as a speaker, you'll want to listen to his every word. Very interesting stuff, I'm glad I watched!
Really a great speaker...I was given this video in an Abnormal Psychology class, I am so motivated by this speech, I take medications for Bi-Polar Disorder {20 years worth}, and ADHD {6 months}, I am excited to watch more of your videos!!
