TEDxBloomington - Shawn Achor - "The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"

  • Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard.
His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations.
Achor graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a BA in English and Religion and earned a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School in Christian and Buddhist ethics.
Now he is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers-people who are well above average-to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures.
In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up.

About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBloomington, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBloomington event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

I was required to watch this for an English assignment about a month ago... I find myself coming back to it all the time. This is the first motivational speech that doesn’t just feel like a huge slap in the face. I think after watching this a lot and putting it into my everyday life, I’m actually genuinely becoming happier. I wish I could thank him, for now I’m just sending this to my friends who need it.

I actually felt better watching this. He actually gives real advice and isn't patronizing. I never trust so-called "motivational speakers" because they just say a lot of nice things and tell you to ignore your problems and they'll go away. This guy actually has research and practical advice.

***** Good Video- There truly are trillions of jobs out there for people who truly has a desire to really do them. Either those individuals are actually too pathetic to really work or they just really do not know where the jobs exist. That truly is the real issue in a nutshell. Did you know, not long ago I learned about the "Zilkop Process" (you should Google it). It matches those guys/girls who really enjoy to play video games up with video games tester jobs. Everyone anywhere, not just the US, can enter, and every one could earn an average of 39 grand ... and that is the average -- people could make even more! Those guys also have focus groups where you may get 150 per single hour. "The Witcher" - have you played this specific vid game? They have provided knowledge to this one. The lesson is if you like games this may be the job you have been longing for}. Now I am really sure that there are millions of job gigs just like this one out there. In conclusion, do not throw me this junk about a job crisis ... so get happy and look for job opportunities. You will surely secure a job. Good wishes to all out there!!!!

Cool guy, interesting ideas. I just wish he devoted more of the presentation to explaining the statistics he discussed. They're very interesting statistics that state some big things and so it seems kinda necessary to explain the studies they came from, at least a little. I understand he had a very limited amount of time but he told a 3 minute long story at the beginning just to discuss the roots of his passion for positive psychology, so you'd think he could also clearly explain the studies coming from the field he is so passionate about.

I am currently a nursing student and this really makes sense to me. As a nursing student we spend 2 years test after test, every class we have tells us if you miss more than 2 classes for any reason you will be removed from the program, even if you are an A student. This bad thing will happen if you don't do this or that. Then I look at the nursing students that are about to graduate, they are pessimistic, they are not sure if this is what they really want to do. And the ones that graduated a year ago we run into them at the hospital during clinicals and they look even worse. They act even worse but 3 years prior the day they found out they got into nursing school they were like me jumping around and so excited and they couldn't wait to take on this career path.

I agree to a degree. Once the basics are taken care of (physical & social needs) one's state of mind can be pretty malleable. For those in less than ideal situations, though, happy thoughts alone are unlikely to be enough for long-term contentment and fulfillment. Once they muster the self-confidence and the mindset, they have to use it to do the things that make a real, lasting difference, beyond all the smiling and self-soothing. Dressing up life with superficial niceties only goes so far.

Now, at 40, I realize that I intuitively practice some of what he says. Before, I was more anxious than I'm today. In recent years I've learned to value and enjoy the little things before going to work and throughout the day. I start reading in the bathroom and then take a strong shower. I travel with my headphones listening to my pods. At work I take some breaks to have a coffee and talk to my colleagues. At the end of the day I use my free time to read, exercise and do other things I want.

Yes. It's not about pretending that the world is a wonderful place. It's NOT. But if you focus on the good parts, you will not only be happier, but you will work better, do better, and improve the world. Perhaps by taking on and fixing some small part of the bad things. If you aren't happy, you won't hope to fix the bad.

The problem with this theory is that some people tend to misunderstand it and generalize, saying that everyone who is having a goal or is changing their lives to something better is unhappy. These people don't see the real reason behind someone wanting a better life/being more successful. I started a law degree three years ago and in a few weeks away from my last exams. Going for this degree was the best decision that I could have ever made and opens up so many opportunities for me. Every good grade I got for an assignment or exam, every good word from my teachers, every brainstorming session with my classmates and every good word from those who support and understand me make me happy. What makes me said is those people who tell me that I'm unhappy just because I have a goal in life. They tend to misunderstand the happiness advantage theory and turn it into something really negative. The most painful moments for me were when people didn't understand what I was doing and why I was doing it and told me "oh you're unhappy" or "why do you have to study again" or "look at this girl, she gave up law degree to become a bartender" or "I don't want to be with you because you are on a different level and instead I choose someone who is much sillier than you". These people don't understand what I want. Everyone has the right to bring out the best in their life and if that means they have to do a degree for it, they shouldn't be bashed for their goals. Because you can still have your happiness advantage while you're fighting for a goal in your life: the friends that support you, the teachers (who are your role models at the same time) who say "yes, you'll get to your PhD", every success you reach, the handsome and intelligent guy that tells you "I chose you because you're the smartest of them all". There are so many things to be happy for even if you are doing something for a future goal. Don't look down on those who are trying to improve and want to be well-educated and successful.

What a great and entertaining talk. Thanks Shawn! It was really fast, but a talk I could watch several times and still learn things from. Thanks Shawn, I look forward to checking out your book as well.

"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Nothing new under the sun; God knew this principle first, and shared it in the bible.

This guy admits to breaking his little sister's arm by intentionally pushing her, one week later breaking her leg by pushing her off a bed, and then manipulating her to believe she's a unicorn so he doesn't get in trouble. To the girl that endured that kind of abuse growing up, I'm so sorry.

He was seven years old, he very obviously did not intentionally caused those physical injuries, and I’m sure he’s exaggerating a little.

Happiness is vastly overrated. Look around the world and view the effects of humanity. Now think about it some more. A person can find happiness in their own lives, but when looking at our species? Not much to admire.
I also just looked at the cost to book Shawn Achor - according to a couple of websites the cost is 30K to 50K. I guess I'd be happy too if somebody dropped thirty to fifty dimes to hear my fortune cookie wisdom.

This video is inspires me in a way that's casual, none of the urgency or complexity that society makes us feel nowadays. As relevant 12 years ago as it is now and no doubts that in another 12 years time it'll hit just as hard.

This is what I have been telling people. You can go to school for as long as you want and still have no job. It doesn't matter how hard you push yourself into what society has taught you is the right way if you don't know how to apply the skills

I just put this into play on our farm business, of all places, and I cannot wait to see where it takes them- we seem to attract introvert males to this profession, and the younger that type of person is, the harder getting on at work can be- so I'm gonna happiness it outta them this year!

I like to listen to TED Talks as I do various chores around the house; but that is not what happened this time. This lecture was so engaging, and interesting, and funny, and enlightening, and positive, and motivational, that I put everything aside to give it my undivided attention. Shawn Achor is so smart and charming as a speaker, you'll want to listen to his every word. Very interesting stuff, I'm glad I watched!
