I had an old Dell CRT for my second monitor on my Windows 10 machine for awhile. Worked just fine. It was fun to use with emulators/older games and PCEm

I’d assume anything with a VGA port would work on any monitor supporting it, cool video either way!!

    The short answer is Yes.
You just need an appropriate adapter to use a retro monitor with a modern PC.

I love how the Award BIOS boot screen pretty much matches the old monitor lmao, because the Award BIOS boot and setup screen on a pentium or 486 era board looks pretty much the same. When boards started using UEFI around ~2011 that changed sadly enough

And not for the better. Either UEFI setups are completely white and sterile or have an ugly background, and all have bad fonts with pixilated rendering. It's not easy to read at all. Mouse support is often lagging and completely redundant. In summary, there is no advantage over AMI WinBIOS, and people hated that already.

i'm using an AOC 7vlr as a daily monitor, I'm really loving the high refresh rates I could get on it for rhythm and action games lol

No reason why it wouldn't work I would have thought, but it still is really interesting to see and an inspiration to set it up for myself 😅

that intel gma igpu isnt great..
also that flicker you see can be improved by improving the refresh rate, but that can only be done by lowering the resolution or setting it interlaced (120 hz effective) via the tool custom resolution utility (cru)
those crts, even the low end ones are still pretty decent for gaming if you get them up to like 120 hz at 640x480. the resolution at that point sucks but the motion resolution is overkill with the crt strobe effect.

I was surprised that an old monitor that came with an 800x600 video mode in the computer worked in the 1000 line mode. Geometry is off with the 4x3 screen!

not familiar with CRT computer monitors, but you were seeing flickering off camera? i didn’t know that could happen, is there a technical explanation behind that?

The screen is constantly drawn on, and can be seen demonstrated in this video ua-cam.com/video/dlT-seESkj0/v-deo.htmlsi=eXXFgUgckAuZRb6S

Don't have time to watch right now, but I'll leave a comment for the algorithm:
    Short answer - Yes
Long answer - Yes and it's incredible. I had an Apple Studio Display CRT set up as a 3rd monitor before the flyback started arcing, and it was incredible to play games and watch videos on

Try a more modern Viewsonic monitor.

I've no idea of the fate of my CRTs, but I'll bet that it wasn't pretty.

Hmm should not have worked you would have gotten an "out of range" error message - did you set the Windows res to 680 x 340 brfore you re-started the PC? Dont forget degauss!!

      @joshwa1234  Місяць тому +1

@@ratcat7668 no, it just worked, the PC is an Intel Q6600 system, so quite old by today's standards, but still capable of running Windows 10.
