I'm an eBay seller myself and on most broken items I make no effort to find out what's wrong, not worth the time, if it doesn't work it's listed for parts. I would assume that the seller just plugged it in, concluded it didn't work, and thus listed it for parts, nothing wrong with that

In situations like those of the PS5 I usually don't request a refund even when I feel like I've been "eBayed" (LOL), I do it as a sort of "self-punishment" in the hope of learning to buy only when I'm reasonably sure I know what actually I'm buying...

Hi there Joey, I wanted to mention that in a Video Card Repair channel called NorthWestRepair. He demonstrated using a clear UV mask which cures really fast and hard and also has the added benefit of seeing how it has been repaired and how. The UV light can get under a connector (or whatever) and cure it completely. It doesn't look as pretty as the Mechanic Green, Red, Black and Blue. But the clear UV Mask works so much better. It may be worth looking into. You could always put a thin coat of green on top of the clear after to make it look better, but that is entirely up to you. Cheers!

I dont understand why people pay so much for a BROKEN console. Even if it can be fixed, its still not worth more than $30-40 in a broken state. You can buy a brand new ps5 for $300....a broken one is NOT worth half that.

As an Ebay business seller myself selling consoles I don't open them up and diagnose issues. I sell as is with basic tests. I buy 30+ Consoles a week amongst 200 other items and don't have the time to test faulty stuff so sell as is.
Alot of time ebay business sellers get absolutely destroyed from returns as we get so many returns based on selling items Spares or Repairs when a buyer assumes we've tested or know issues with our broken stuff we sell.
Love the channel but like u said the business seller has 2k+ reviews. They probably in same boat as me. Buying joblots at auction cheap and sell on with basic testing

You need a set of Bondhus torx screwdrivers. iFixit is good, but Bondhus has an amazing set of torx screwdrivers that I have personally used a t10 or t20 (I forget the exact size) on a rusted on set screw. Pounded the screwdriver into the hex head fastener, then had to use a 200mm plier set to turn it and get it off. The screwdriver handle didn't slip or spin, the shaft of the driver twisted at least 60 or 90⁰, but once the screw popped out, it sprung right back to normal.
The set is like $30 and well worth it.

Good Job, Started Electronics in The 70's, Went to a Pawn Shop in Vegas, Bought a Fender Twin Reverb, Broken, They said I Couldn't Bring Back, Agreed, As Is, Pulled the Tubes to Test, But Noticed One of the Tube Sockes Had Been Replaced, Also Noticed it Was Installed 180 ° Out. Desoldered The Wires, Rotated the Socket, Soldered Wires Back as They Laid. Tubes in, Worked Like A Charm, Been Doing Ever Since, People Throw Away Anything and Everything. Usually 1 Part, You Get to Work On Everything.
Is Broken, Can't Hurt it any more(actually can Make Worse), End Up With Some Cool Stuff.

I've cooked some ICs (usually a PCH) with temperatures that high when reflowing after reball. Recommend heating from the bottom until the board reaches 150C then come from the top with temperatures until the IC reflows keeping the top air under 260C (leaded balls melt and flow around 190-200c). maximizes succcess by minimize possible damage due to heat. a good cheap preheater helps with this job. ( I use the T8280, can be somewhat slow, but solid, the new quick 861 pro has awesome/accurate temperature control now too)

I felt so bad I went back to try to give it back to the people but they just laughed and said they didn't want it either way, their son was addicted to WoW and they wanted to get rid of the PC one way or another.

I mean... It was quite an accomplishment to fix that ps5 but... 49.30 profits for that amount of work don't look like worthy as a business if you count how many hours you put on fixing it and the monetary risk you had on attempting to fix it. :/ I feel the broken down items market is over inflated. You should have paid like the 49.30 instead of getting 49.30 for fixing it. :/

Its for parts, the seller said exactly what the overall function would be. Anyone who argued otherwise is insane unless they're talking about the low effort they made to test. However, they said it was from a bulk lot, which means they're looking for easy repairs and wont spend time on diagnostics.
The target audience for this sale is repair shops for parts or someone who wants to roll the dice. Applying consumer expectations based on a functioning device is asinine.

Ebay automatically removes negative feedback for top rated sellers after buyer is refunded. 100% positive feedback often isn't really 100%.

“Bought from a larger joblot unsure if working” is universal for “someone fucked up and couldn’t fix it so know I’m hoping to make get some money back.”
Did you check serial numbers match in photo to actual console received? Sorry if this has been mentioned, couldn’t see it in comments.

At 5:15 If I wasn't a youtuber, I'd have sent it back, if I wanted to just fix the issue it had. As a youtuber I'd keep it, record fixing it, and post it lol, 'cause this is going to be good content, even if the repair is a fail

Love the channel but I get irked when you interchangeably use the terms soldermask and conformal coating when reworking boards.
The green stuff is soldermask and is meant to protect the PCB copper areas from being tinned by aolder.
Conformal costing is transparent and is used to cover the PCB and soldered components from the environment (salt spray, moisture) or for isolation of high voltages.
I have almost a quarter-century experience in R&D and electronics manufacturing. I am allowed to be irked.

As a seller, I think it’s not right to issue a refund if an item is listed as “spares or repairs” (unless the description is incorrect or the pictures don’t match). Buyers could abuse the system by ordering items, doing quick tests or repairs to get them working, and if they can’t, asking for a refund at the seller’s expense. Personally, I buy and sell a wide variety of electronics that I’m unfamiliar with (often from repair shops). I don’t even open them up, and oftentimes the item actually works. I just don’t have the time to test all of them, so I sell them as faulty at a lower price.
I think the buyer should ask about the item before purchasing if it’s not clear. That’s what I do. Assume “faulty” means broken or missing parts unless the seller specifies the known fault.

I have so much respect for this man, he is a genius! I will definitely subscribe to him although I don't understand anything he did, but its so satisfying and I hope to learn a lot from him! and a big shoutout to the gentleman who helped him in the discord server!

If you can only sell a working one for £230, why on earth did you pay £160 for a spares and repair?
(Didn't the don't parts also cost money? Sure they're left over bits from other repairs but you still paid for them or at least I presume you did.)

Was the original fan actually bad or just missing its connector? Also, you should give your salvaged parts some value (you did buy those machines in the first place). Great job fixing it!!

When I was younger I tried to buy used parts from ebay saying that they're "working" to upgrade my computer. I still remember from all the parts I bought only the cpu cooler worked, from that point on I never even looked at ebay again.
Because even if you were a person who knew how to repair tech the CPU was missing pins, the GPU was missing caps and memory, hard drive was dead, and the PSU almost caused a fire good thing I was doing it in front of my house and not inside.
Good sellers from ebay are like unicorns, because even people with good reviews start to just lie and hope the buyer doesn't contact them again.

Joey you should make the new wire-pads more longer and then put uv resin in both sides. I think it could be more easier to solder and more stronger.
    Gg Joey!!!! 🎉

Your work is exceptional, and as a fellow repairer it is great to see the end result of less e-waste. To say that it was profitable however, is a stretch, if you take your time into account and taxes (like VAT, which is worse if the seller isnt VAT registered) then this is not a profiable and sustainable way to run a business. Obviously you get external revenues which will subsidise the repairs which will help.

I like repairing musical instruments from ebay, too bad people think a non-working keyboard or guitar is worth the same as fully functioning one. Needless to say, thanks to idiots overpricing everything I've had a hard time finding items to repair.

This is the first time I've seen one of your videos. And you've made a profit of basically 50£. But what you don't talk about is how many hours you spent doing this and you need to consider the the donor boards cost because that's a sunk cost already.
From a business sense you haven't made enough to make a living or even pay a month of rent compared to what you could be making doing any other job for the same amount of time. I'm not saying fixing things isn't worthwhile, but this is far from profitable.
You should be buying these broken units for no more than 50£. The sellars argument that there are valuable parts inside is pointless if they are not willing to fix them themselves. You also need to consider the fees that you've lost in purchasing it and the fees that you will lose selling it.

28:01 for something like that, personally, i would've done it old school (from the 90's) IE, you take a bit of copper faced board, cut a little square, cut your vias in it, glue it down to the mobo, and then put bodge wires to that. Strong mechanical connection and a reliable path to the connector.

15:04 why not use a bit of quick cure, high temp resistant epoxy to permanently fix those bits of braid to the board? I use "pegatanke transparent" on my fixes like this, a simple 1:1 two part epoxy that is resistant to temperatures of 500ºC, can handle 700kg of dead weight and is resistant to solvents. and might as well use those replacement pads that is sold in sheets.
